I think the fried rice is good, the mapo tofu is good too, they are very generous with their meat portion in the mapo tofu. The salt and pepper dishes are too sweet. The reviews on this place got our attention so we decided to stop in. Hubby had the twice cooked pork. It was amazing! delicious ! the flavor was nice and spicy with plenty of veggies and pork, loved the flavor. I had the combination stir fried rice. The serving was enough for three people. It was huge! Really enjoyed all of the protein in the rice. We also had the spring rolls. They were full of pork and shrimp and delicious. Our server was very attentive and very nice. How nostalgic! This was my college go-to spot for me and my friends for Taiwanese food and it honestly still lives up to what I remember. Decently sized portions and delightfully flavored. Beef rolls were as good as I remembered--paired with chili oil is a must. Their mapo tofu is a good introduction to anyone who hasn't had it before. Delicate and flavorful--tons of meat! The salt and pepper chicken was my favorite of the night. The service is crazy fast and efficient. It was as friendly as any Asian-owned restaurant can ever be. The thing that keeps us coming back to the rice bowl is not only the quality of food but it's the quantity. Even the lunch special which I had today, the black bean chicken, is enough food to either share or take home to enjoy as another meal. With the lunch special you also get a fried egg roll and a soup of your choice. My only slight disappointment today was at the egg roll. Seemed a little bit chewier rather than crispier which wasn't as appealing to the palate. The other minor issue was the egg drop soup wasn't its normal goodness. Tasted a little flat. Maybe a little bland even. But still, the deal that you get for the lunch special with the amount of food is hard to beat. read more

Rice Bowl Cafe is my go-to Chinese spot in Austin. My favorites are the 3 cup chicken, fried fish, and mapo tofu. Parking is easy and plentiful, and the service is excellent. There are friendly older ladies make it feel authentic. I usually go at lunchtime, and they even give complimentary crackers with dipping sauces which is nice. The restaurant is quiet, never too busy, with reasonable prices and giant portions. I'll definitely be coming back again and again. read more

This restaurant is located right next-door to St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop on Braker. I decided to grab a bite here for lunch while the wife checked out the thrift store. I decided to dine in and was directed to one of a dozen or so tables. The egg rolls and soup came out in minutes. I ordered the beef rolls which came highly recommended by some of my fellow yelpers. The beef rolls are considered to be an appetizer, but they are more like a full meal unless you split them between four people. The hot and sour soup was decent, but I've had better and the eggrolls were straight out of the fryer and piping hot. You can pretty much expect to pay $20 for lunch here without the tip. There's no tip screen waiting for you if you dine in, but that may not be the case for takeout. They got the formula right here. Fast, friendly service, good food at a good price and plenty of parking. They do not serve alcoholic beverages and there is no public bathroom (unless you dine in). Keep in mind, they are closed on Mondays. Definitely a place I would visit again or get takeout. read more

Located in a strip mall at the corner of Lamar and Braker, they specialize in Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine. When I call and order, they ask for my number and then call me by my first name - a nice touch. Dining in or to go, service is always good and the food relatively fast. I suggest the 3 cup chicken (if you have a picky eater, you can specify white meat only). The meat is slightly crispy but not breaded and the dish is full of stir fried basil. I also love the moo shu chicken/beef/pork/vegetable. I always order extra pancakes and plum sauce to go with it because they are generous with their portions of the main entree. The beef roll is a tasty app that combines green onion pancakes with sliced beef. Stir fried green beans always hit. If I want to eat light, I get the chicken lettuce wraps, hot and sour soup and sauteed snow pea leaves. Parking is easy. The menu offers a lot of variety. I have visited this establishment usually on Sundays after church and have tried a variety of dishes on their menu. The chips and sweet and sour sauce are a free appetizer before the meal and they are light, crispy and a great starter. I have had the crispy crab puffs, combination fried rice, salt and pepper tofu, beef and broccoli and kung pow chicken. My favorite is bean curd home style tofu because it has a variety of fresh vegetables and the tofu is cooked to a nice crisp texture. The portion sizes are very large and easy to share. read more

Large portion with big chunky vegetables that were stir fried just right. The sauce was excellent and not too spicy. It had that fire char taste that I like so much with good stir fry. That char taste is absent in many Chinese restaurants in Dallas for some reason. The steam rice was fluffy and soft- perfect! Egg rolls not so much. Mushy inside and not much taste. I really would rate RBC as top tier for the Austin area. All foods are really fresh and you can tell they use good ingredients. The 3 cup chicken is truly special. This General Tso's chicken is better than all the other generals chicken. The soups are good. The chicken with garlic sauce has Szechuan peppers which will numb your mouth. Came here on a recommendation of a fellow yelper last night! Rice bowl cafe is one of few family-styled Chinese restaurants that is opened on Tuesday. Rice bowl cafe is located at the end of the strip, next to a mass of dumpsters. The smell and landscape was off putting but we were greeted with great energy from the hosts/waitress. Highlights: -They serve wonton strips with dipping sauce as a complimentary snack. -You can only order bottled water, which was a shocker to me being how saucy and spicy their items are. We ordered 2 salt and pepper squid entrees, 1 triple cup chicken, 1 curry tofu. We each got a bowl of rice, which surprisingly was enough. The salt and pepper squid was tasty but they only come as the "tubes" and are a bit hard to stuff into your mouth or cut up using the provided Utensils. Some of my squid pieces were still uncooked batter on the inside. The chicken was so tasty and came in the cast iron pot. It was sweet, spicy, and savory at the same time. Curry tofu was exactly what you'd imagine it to taste like. Every item was quite spicy and of course we didn't get water refills because they are sold per bottle. Our total for the the 4 entrees was $67. (Excluding gratuity) Again, the staff was very nice but I definitely have preferred spots over rice bowl cafe. I've only ordered delivery so I can't speak on the environment and service of dining in.. however every single time I do order, it is delivered super fast and always perfect with no mistakes. The food is delicious! Been ordering here for at least 6 years now. I especially love the Kung Pao Chicken and General Tso's Chicken. The Pepper Steak and Walnut Shrimp are also great. The portions are really big as well. For two people we can usually get 2-3 meals out of ordering just 3 things. Keep in mind that the portion of rice that comes with the togo orders isn't alot, about 1 cup rice per dish. It's not enough for me and my fella's liking, so we do always order a couple extra. They also give crispy wonton strips and a sweet chili sauce with every order. And we also like to request a side of their spicy mustard. If you live in North Austin definitely give it a try. Especially N Lamar area, I know they deliver to at least the surrounding area. I always call and place my delivery order directly on the phone.
