Hidden gem in this food truck area. This one is located towards the end of the parking lot with authentic Asian food. They have Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. Food was fresh and delicious. Service was good and there might be a wait depending on how many people are there since they make it fresh. They have seating area under cover as well. They take credit cards too. You can learn a lot about Vietnamese food by NOT eating in an air-conditioned Western restaurant. * * * Com Tam Pa Phi is in a fascinating food truck park at the corner of Parmer and Dessau. The clientele here is downscale. The food is downscale. If you are looking for the Elizabeth Street Cafe, it is not here. A lot of the places are fine for what they are. But you have to get yourself into a downscale mentality. * * * Virtually every single truck has built a shack to eat the food in. You are out of the sun. You are in the shade. There is some kind of a breeze - either from an electric fan or cracks in the wall or ceiling. Housing is crude. This is rough eating. More importantly, there is no air conditioning. So it is going to get hot, shade or no shade, fan or no fan. * * * Most of the patrons are Mexican or Central Americans. They are also much much smarter than me. They would show up in their trucks - often a giant pick up truck. Someone would jump down from the passenger side ... Go into a shack ... Get their bag of food ... And take it Home. They were eating in air conditioned comfort. I was the only idiot actually eating in the shacks. I was roasting like a horned frog on a rock That said, I ate like a king I also got a huge lesson in what Vietnamese food is all about. * * * A lot of Vietnamese places are like the food trucks at Parmer and Dessau. Vietnam is hot. Vietnam is humid. Lots of street food is served outside. You eat on a folding chair. Or you eat in a shack similar to what I was eating in. In 105 degrees, things change. * * * a) In air conditioned restaurants, you get raw carrot and raw daikon and raw cucumber on the side. You ignore those and eat your main dish. Out in the shack in 105 degrees, the raw carrots, raw daikon and raw cucumbers were life savers. They were a major contrast with the hot food straight out of the fryer. Never have I enjoyed a raw cucumber so much. b) In an air conditioned restaurant, you ignore the condiments that are served at your table. You leave the Rooster Sauce and the Rice Vinegar alone. Condiments become king in 105 degrees in a shack. I was dipping my raw veggies in rice vinegar or alternatively in chili paste. They were the absolute best part of the meal. c) I will describe the two dishes I had next. Keep in mind this is downscale Vietnamese cooking. Lots of the ingredients are going to come straight out of the freezer. In a brick and mortar air conditioned place, I would be unhappy if I was served food straight from the freezer. In the shack, my meal actually worked. d) One of my two dishes was a lemon salt and pepper fried shrimp. This was straight out of the freezer and almost tasteless by itself. But dipped in chili paste, it was just divine. I chowed down my shrimp quite happily. I was starting to get addicted to that chili paste. e) The other dish was vermicelli with egg roll and grilled pork. Once again, the egg roll was out of the freezer. Once again, rice vinegar and chili paste would be the stars of the show. The pork was what you would expect from an honest but downscale lower class place. The pork was decent enough to eat. (No health violations here.) But it was definitely gristly and fatty. The pork was just acceptable all by itself. It got better - but not amazing - if it was dipped in sauce. f) In 105 degrees, iced Vietnamese coffee is GOD. They serve theirs the old fashioned way where it brews in your tin cup before you pour it over ice. The iced Vietnamese coffee extended by two hours the amount of time I could have sat comfortably in that shack. I wish I had some of that iced Vietnamese coffee right now. * * * If you ate only one Vietnamese meal in Austin, would you want it to be Com Tam Pa Phi? Probably not. Do you want to replicate the experience of eating out on a road somewhere in rural central Vietnam? Com Tam Pa Phi will do you for sure. Can you eat well at Com Tam Pa Phi? I had a great time. But frankly, the Mexicans were more on top of things than I was. If you live anywhere near the corner of Parmer and Dessau, Picking your food up from the food court and eating it in your apartment makes a lot of sense. And in your apartment, you can dip your veggies in anything you want that HEB sells. read more

THEY SELL COM TAM AGAIN!! We've been here several times over the year and menu definitely has changed to a point they were only selling friend rice. But I'm happy to say THEY SELL COM TAM AGAIN!! We had com thit nuong (rice with grilled pork), bun thit nuong (vermicelli with grilled pork) , egg rolls, and coffee. The rice dish came with bare minimum. I wish they didn't charge for steamed egg or Chinese sausage for an additional $4 each add on. Parking is shred with the rest of the food park. Very authentic bun thit nuong cha gio. My only complaint is somehow, the noodles are a bit oily. The fish sauce isn't as sweet as others. The pork was seasoned very well, like your normal Vietnamese grilled pork. Service was quick. We waited about 10 minutes to get our order after paying. read more

Viet food truck in a sea of Latin food trucks at the corner of Dessau/Howard. My friend and I shared the bun thit nuong (vermicelli bowl w/ pork) and a chicken banh mi. Everything was good! I really liked the pickles and amount of vegetables in the bowl. Meat was well seasoned with lemongrass. The banh mi was crispy and the chicken was also well seasoned. I wish they had a tofu option for banh mi, but that's just a preference. Pricing was good and a few bucks cheaper than if you went to a brick and mortar. Service was friendly and fast. Came to this food truck for lunch before we departed Austin. They were mopping the floors when we arrived, so that's how early we came lol. There was parking inside of the food truck area, but I know it can get packed, so there is parking outside the area that will require a short walk. Com tam phi had this cute outdoor seating concept. There were 3 picnic tables to dine at. We ordered 2 spring rolls with shredded pork skin, and com tam C6. It took a little over 20 minutes for the food to come out. When I opened the box of com tam to check my order, my dad spotted a fly lying on top of the pickled vegetables, and it wasn't moving or flying much even when he tried to pick it out. My dad showed it to the employee, and honestly, I would've been fine with just replacing the vegetables, but he offered to remake the whole thing. As we were waiting for the new order, my dad and I started to eat the spring rolls. They were okay. Not much filling, and they weren't rolled very well, so everything kept spilling out. The new com tam came out within 5 minutes, but we went to the hotel to eat it. Super flavorful and filling. The toppings complemented each other well. With every bite, I wanted to make sure I got a little bit of everything. I really loved the chili sauce they provided on the side. Gave the dish a nice kick to it and was a nice addition to the sweetness coming from the fish sauce. Overall, I enjoyed checking this place out and appreciated the service that was provided. It's cool to see all the variety of dishes they have, even with the Chinese speciality plates. read more

I preface this review by saying I'm from California and I am used to getting my Com Tam plates from Orange County/ San Jose. This place hits the spot! Plus the owner is a restaurateur from Houston- so he knows what I mean by saying you should be able to drink fish sauce. From the broken rice being cooked correctly, the meat being seasoned, and the chicken wings being perfectly crispy- I found a place to add to my rotation. I was told by the new owners that this place no longer serves Com Tam, and the previous partner moved. Very misleading. Highly recommend yall change the name of the business. I think this place has changed owner recently. The menu doesn't have the broken rice dishes like how I remembered anymore. The menu was replaced mostly with tacos and other Mexican dishes. We ordered Com Chien Duong Chau and the wings, they were good, but just not Vietnamese anymore. I brought my mom here to check out the food truck for our Friday lunch together, and we were both very impressed by the food. We both got traditional Vietnamese dishes to assess how good they were, and they definitely passed our sniff test. As it turns out, they have a restaurant in Houston and are trying to expand into the Austin area. This explains why they were so good, since the best spots in Texas are in Houston and DFW. The food was super fresh and very well seasoned. Their fish sauce is very nice and light, not overly sweet or salty like a lot of them tend to be. It complements rather than overpowers the other flavors. The servings were very ample, and there was a lot of meat. It was a little challenging eating it all in styrofoam boxes, but that's true with pretty much all food trucks. The owners were super nice and friendly guys. We chatted with them while we ate, and they kept checking on us. There was a steady stream of people during lunch. A lot of it was take-out, but we really enjoyed eating there. They're in a food truck park on Dessau Road, and every truck has it's own cabana that serves as it's own private, patio dining area. Super cute. The day was pleasant, and they had a huge chilling fan, so why not eat there. We plan on going back again to try some of their other dishes now that we know they're legit and the quality is excellent! read more

I've driven by this location with all the food trucks on the corner of Dessau and Howard. The parking lot could use some work, but the food is out of this world. Terrific. This is our first time here at the food park. My wife found this Vietnamese food truck and had to come experience it. What a very nice spot to sit and enjoy a good old-fashioned Vietnamese food. Ran into a couple of young men who highly recommended this spot while having lunch. It was a nice interaction. My wife ordered in Vietnamese and the owner recognized and spoke Vietnamese back. Exciting that there was some kind of conversation going on that he gave us his full attention. there were three tables to sit where are you can escape the sun and the usual elements. I really enjoyed the authentic cuisine that they had served. We let the owner know that we would certainly come back. The food was made with love in mind. Since they're open from 11 to 11 PM., I'd like to see a little bit of a foodie nightlife that occurs here. read more
