Beef Pho - Pho Bo
Amber L.

We've always said Austin has some good pho and Sunflower makes no exception. Located at the end of a shopping area, Sunflower is a bit unassuming. There's good parking outside and the inside is simple and down to Earth. It's a clean place with good service, very ideal for a quick pop in lunch, which is what we did. We only ordered the beef pho but they have a wide array of things on the menu like stir fried noodles and fried rice. The beef pho was delicious with the signature clean tasting broth. Their broth here isn't as anise forward as many other places, which is actually nice because it feels clean and doesn't give the after taste that star anise can sometimes leave. The beef was tender and flavorful and the noodles had the perfect texture to them. This is probably in the top 3 of pho places we've had in Austin so far and we're pretty confident you'll feel the same way when you go and give them a shot!

I rarely leave negative reviews and I'm usually very forgiving with food, but this experience was disappointing enough that I felt I had to say something. One of our dishes was supposed to come with rice paper, but it didn't arrive until about 15 minutes after the meal -- by then we had already eaten it without making spring rolls because we didn't know. The tomato broth was extremely bland, the noodle dish had only one flat flavor profile, and the grilled meat was similarly boring. The catfish had almost no taste at all, and even the sauce meant to accompany it lacked flavor. Service made the experience worse. The woman who brought out my soup treated us like we were a nuisance rather than customers. Staff also started cleaning around us while we were still seated and chatting, even though there was no line and they weren't close to closing. It felt rushed and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, between the bland food and poor service, this isn't a place I'd return to.

Bo Ne - steak and eggs

I ordered the steak and eggs (Bo Ne) and shrimp spring rolls. I'm not really sure of where else in Austin that I can get it at. Love the sizzling plate of steak/eggs being placed in front of me, and a plate of baguette with veggies. I love how they include the pate with my dish, so staying authentic. Fast service, and ample seating in the restaurant. No fuss and great place for Vietnamese food!

Great Vietnamese restaurant with a variety of authentic Vietnamese food! Sunflower Cuisine is regularly packed with customers. They have an array of authentic Vietnamese food to choose from and never disappoints. I've had the Bo Ne (Steak and Eggs), Lemongrass Beef, and Five Spice Grilled Chicken Lunch Special here. All delicious! Friendly staff and great customer service. Definitely recommend!

We love to have Vietnamese food and especially pho during the cold weather. The lemongrass and other spices really does wonders for your sinuses. This restaurant is very beautifully decorated with lots of natural plants and sunflower wall art that create a welcoming and serene environment for dining here. The tofu vermicelli bowl was deliciously spicy with the tofu fried in chilli garlic oil and chicken pho broth was flavorful. The staff and our server were all friendly and attentive.

Enjoyed our memorable visit on the other side of town on the corner of McNeil Drive and Parmer. It's a little out of our way but good news is that we've been there two or three times. Their food is consistent and still very delicious. The staff is very friendly and hospitable. It's pretty cool when my wife is Vietnamese and she can order in a way that the staff understands her completely. Not just ordering the menu items, but her distinction of how the food differs from her expectations. Sometimes I feel it. It's a game to see if they understand how the food is prepared. I enjoy sitting down here at the restaurant because it's very clean and it doesn't smell like a wet mop. Some restaurants have that unpleasant odor. This one smells of good clean food. This is our usual spot when we're on this side of AUSTIN. I recommend coming out and giving it a try. Another thing to note is when you've seen restaurants filled with Asians. It usually means it's good with them, it's good for you.

We came here on a Sunday afternoon and they had a full house. It's tucked away in a corner on the opposite side of the H-E-B. When you walk in, it's a pleasant atmosphere with tons of natural light. Someone greeted us quickly and had us sat. I got a lychee jasmine iced tea and it was barely sweet at all. It had three big lychees at the bottom and was refreshing but I was hoping for a bit more lychee flavor. We also got a Vietnamese coffee which was delicious!! For the food, we started with the wonton bombs which were tasty. Next, I ordered the Sunflower crepe because they were out of the pate they use for the Saigon steak & eggs. But, the sunflower crepe turned out to be a great option. It was nice and crispy and the vegetables were fresh. I make little lettuce wraps with bits of the crepe. My boyfriend got the shaken beef which was a bit disappointing. The presentation was beautiful but there was a big pool of sauce at the bottom which masked the flavor of everything including the rice, egg, and veggies. It was overwhelming and also too salty.

In an effort to expand my palate I thought I try Vietnamese food today not too far from where I work. I was greeted by a welcoming hostess who told me I could sit anywhere I wanted. This was welcomed and appreciated. I chose a window seat so I watch was happening out side.., trees blowing, windchime turning and plants swaying from side to side. Now for the food...I choose a vermicelli bowl (Rice vermicelli noodle bowl topped with fresh herbs, shredded lettuce, cucumber, thinly sliced mint, pickled carrots, imperial rolls and topped with crushed peanuts). So yummy and vegetarian. I try to have a couple of non-meat days a week. Sunflower has a 4 page menu, so lots to select from. My food was served hot and rather quickly. I will definitely return.

If you're craving your Ba Ngoai's cooking, look no further. Going to a typical Vietnamese restaurant in Austin, you'll find the more mainstream dishes such as Pho, Com Thit Nuong, Egg Rolls, and maybe the occasional Bo Luc Lac, if they're feeling bold. However, at Sunflower Vietnamese Cuisine, they dig deep into their Vietnamese roots. You'll find heavy contenders such as Banh Xeo, Ca Kho To, Canh Chua, and dishes you'll only find at your Ba Ngoai's house. Note: Since the menu does lean towards more traditional meals, don't expect dishes such as the Ca Kho To to be clean of bones!

Banh xèo was served with only 3 small green lettuce leaves. We need the large lettuce leaves to wrap and hold the banh xèo to dịp in fish sauce. There wasn't much pork and no yellow mung bean inside the banh xèo. Bún bowl portions were small

Saigon Steak N Eggs - Bo Ne

I have never tried the pho here but that's bc I don't come here for pho. The reason why I love this restaurant is bc they offer so many other traditional viet dishes that most viet restaurants here in Austin don't have. Things I've ordered time and time again: - Bo Ne (steak and eggs) - Banh hoi (fine vermicelli wrap with the minced shrimp on sugar cane) : this is a do it yourself spring roll dish. You can wrap everything with lettuce or rice paper. - Hu tieu dac biet (southern noodle soup): very similar to pho BUT this is PORK broth. Pho is a beef broth. Has quail egg, fish balls, shrimp, & sliced pork - Bun bo hue (kingdom noodle soup) - Bun rieu (crabmeat tomato noodle soup) - Ca kho to (catfish clay pot) : SPICY caramelized catfish in a clay pot served with rice. - Canh chau with fish (hot and sour soup): clear broth soup with catfish, tomato, and pineapple.

Tofu Vegan Crepe - Banh Xeo Chay. Ask for fish sauce cause I don't know what they were serving with this
Valerie Deanna C.

The Banh Xeo was crispy and huge! I got the Banh Xeo Chay chocked full of fried tofu, juicy mushrooms, mung bean, green onions and sprouts. The crepe was super strong and crispy, slightly oily but not overly so, and the filling was plenty. BUT HERE IS MY ISSUE WITH THIS PLACE: 1.) the service is lacking when they are busy. Then it seems they start picking and choosing who deserves top tier attention while others get left by the wayside 2.) they serve non traditional herbs with the Banh Xeo. They only had mint, but they had no fish leaf, no sesame leaf, no CULANTRO, no basil. Most places give you at least four big huge pieces of lettuce for wrapping, and this place only gave two. They were stingy with the pickled daikon and carrots and they lazily used cilantro as an herb instead of more traditional Vietnamese herbs. Proper Vietnamese herbs are icing on the cake for this particular dish, so NOT having them was a disappointment though the crepe was great. 3.) they also provided non traditional sauces for the spring rolls and the Banh Xeo. The spring rolls' peanut sauce had some sort of red Thai chili sauce (?) thing going on, and instead of giving me proper fish sauce with my Banh Xeo, they gave me some sort of dark soy sauce with chili paste? No. I had to flag them down for fish sauce. All in all, the spring rolls were filling with huge slabs of fried tofu inside. I had to ask for the addition of basil to the rolls, though. And the vegan fried tofu and mushroom crepe was PERFECT minus the lack of lettuce and traditional Vietnamese herbs. 3.5 stars, but I'll round it up to 4

Sunflower Crepes - Banh Leo

The ambience of this place is cozy. The service is friendly, fast and accurate. The food is amazing! The veggies are fresh, the crepe is crunchy and served hot. It has beans sprouts, shrimp and pork. When you dip it in the sauce it gives it another level of flavor explosion.

Julie's Noodles - Lamb Stewed Noodle Soup

I've had this place Julie's Noodles on my must go list for a long time (cause everyone says it is…read morethe best noodles in austin) and i just found myself going to the grand opening of a new Japanese general store called EBISU in the same strip mall. As i left EBISU, Julie's was across the parking lot so i finally went. Only the big table was available so i sat and a nice young couple sat with me and ordered so much stuff that they shared and i got to try the dumplings, scallion pancakes, and the chicken chow mien which i had ordered for myself. The food was was pretty good! I was overwhelmed with options and picked the Stewed Chicken Chow Mein which I enjoyed but next time will get something a bit spicier. Like I said the couple sitting with me shared a pork dumpling and and some scallion pancakes with me and were both really delicious and when I go back again I'll likely get them. The staff is really nice and the woman at the counter was sweet and asked permission to put other customers at the large table I was sitting at. Which I was happy to do especially since I was eating alone.

I ordered hot and sour pork soup. I had never had hot and sour soup with meat. Portions were generous, ingredients fresh, and the food arrived smoking hot. The noodles were soft, smooth and flavorful. The pork inside looked like tiny meatballs. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the restaurant was completely full and customers were continuing to flow in. Because the restaurant is rather small, I had to wait about 20 minutes for my order. Jim, one of the owners, said if I had ordered 3 items it would take about 45 minutes, that's why I went with one. You could easily tell that many folks at the restaurant were regulars, which means the food, service or both were exceptional. Definitely will be returning to Three Gorges...

Family…read morestyle, big portions at a good price point. - Cumin Lamb: A heaping pile of thinly sliced lamb that is tender mixed in with cumin seeds, sichuan peppercorns, fresh cilantro, and red chilis. The cumin seeds give it that signature earthy, aromatic flavor and you get a slight tingly numbing spice sensation from the chilis and peppercorn. The lamb is not overly gamey, but it still does taste like lamb so if you are not really a lamb fan, I'd choose something else. - Jumping Fish: A very popular dish! Tender white fish fillets that is so soft it melts in your mouth. It is in a flavorful oil and broth that is refreshing from the fresh jalapenos. It is a savory dish, yet still relatively mild. It commes with napa cabbage as well! This was my favorite dish and I loved the flavor combined with the white rice. - Mapo Tofu (Vegetarian): They have one with pork as well, but I got the vegetarian version. Silky soft tofu cubes in that signature mapo tofu sauce and numbing peppercorns. Despite the appearance of all the dishes, none of them were very spicy. Overall, a comforting soft, spicy, savory dish with a slight tingle. - Eggplant in garlic sauce: A deliciously sweet and umami garlic sauce. The eggplants could have been a bit more cooked through in my opinion though since it was still quite firm. I loved it still! Note that all the dishes to me were not spicy just had an underlying subtle spice or tingle (like a finishing flavor note if you will). Also, since it is sichuan the dishes are on the oilier side. You order with the cashier at the front and pay up front as well. Food comes out quickly. It is a small space with three rows of tables (maybe around 12-15 tables give or take), so it does fill up fast. I went at around 5:40 PM on a Thursday and there was no wait, but by the time we finished eating at around 7PM, the restaurant was full. House of Three Gorges was hyped up a lot on my social media feed and through word of mouth, so I came in with high expectations. Luckily, they did not disappoint.
