I had been eyeing this spot ever since I saw their "opening soon" sign, so I popped in the same week they finally had their grand opening. It's a modestly sized, fast-casual spot where you order on a screen, which makes the whole process quick and efficient. The food comes out fast, and their xiao long bao is definitely one of the better ones I've had in the city. I also always get their fresh soy milk, which hits the spot every time. Their noodle dishes are a bit more on the bland side, so I'd recommend sticking with the dumplings, especially if it's your first time visiting. I thought the chive and shrimp one was okay, didn't taste much chive in there but the green color was fun. Cheese & shrimp potstickers were delicious. My favorite was the cute bunny buns for dessert! decent place overall with a casual, relaxed ambiance. the soup dumplings are worth ordering. theyre packed with soup and have a nice thin wrapper that doesn't fall apart. the spicy pork wontons were also great, esp with the combination of peanut sauce and chili oil. we also really enjoyed the scallion beef rolls, which were crispy and filled with tender braised beef shank and onions as cute as they are, id skip the custard and red bean baos next time since they are literally packaged frozen buns. i also found the prices a bit steep for the portion sizes... paying around $8 for just a few pieces of cucumber was a little much. some hit or misses but id come back for the dim sum! read more

I really wanted to like this place a lot. My family is from Shanghai and I loooooove of old heritage breakfast spots, and this place serves a lot of those same dishes (scallion oil noodles, XLB, shengjianbao/pan fried pork buns, wontons in soup, soy milk). Take this review with a grain of salt as I had high hopes I've been now twice and both times left somewhat underwhelmed. XLB: about as solid as any other xlb in Austin. 4/5 Shengjianbao: 2/5. To be fair, I haven't had any other good ones America, not even in Los Angeles (where maybe I hit a 3/5). Flavor is fine, but the breading is too thick and crispy part not crispy enough. Scallion oil noodles: 3/5 the noodles are too flat/thick and it needed a little more... something savoriness. Not sure what exactly felt flat...maybe more scallion oil? read more

Soft Opening review. The location is in a good spot alongside other restaurants and stores, making it convenient. The store is on the smaller side, so if you are coming with a large party, you might want to come a bit early or get it to go. When you come in, you can order at the counter or use their machine. The machine does show pictures, so if you are a visually person, I would say use that. On the menu, they have combo sets that they have designed to make things easier, but you can always order it outside the combo set. Once you order, they give you a number, or you grab a number if you order off the machine and sit down. They will bring you your food and drink when they are ready. The food came out extra hot (the Crispy Noodle with Beef and Pan Fried Pork dumplings). When I say hot, my noodles still had steam coming from them after 30 minutes. For the Crispy Noodle, it was decent, but the sauce lacked flavor, and there were barely any crispy noodles in there due to the amount of sauce poured on top. Pan Fried Pork Dumplings were good; they were juicy and had a nice flavor to them when dipping them in a mixture of soy and chili oil. Warning: be careful as you bite into it. The juices might squirt at someone or yourself. I also got a side of Spicy Peanut sauce wonton; the flavor was good. Glad they didn't come out scorching hot like the others. THE BIG: Apparently NYC's best soup dumplings and now in Austin! Located in the Mueller area. Restaurant is pretty small but ample enough seating. Private parking lot available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here famished and ordered to go. There is a kiosk up front where you can order your food as well as the option to sit down. We ordered the Nan Xiang signature pork dumplings, chicken/shrimp siu mai, shredded beef & pepper noodles, and hot soy milk. We waited for thirty minutes to get our food, which is weird because this is suppose to be a fast food spot. The pork dumplings was pretty good, however the other items were just alright. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall spent around $45 for everything. Pretty pricey for what you get. If you do come, try the soup dumplings for sure. read more

The order took about 20min to get ready so expect a bit of a wait. The restaurant itself is small, but tables move quick. I really liked the soup dumplings. The soy milk was watery in my opinion. Do not expect a traditional dining experience. There's a group gathered around watching tables eat, but no waiting or line system. Confusing. There are both ordering machines and staff at the counter, but no instructions on which to go with. There are also rewards and loyalty programs but it's all unclear. Went back to Nan Xiang Express again today and they definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the Combo Rice Bowl with Crispy Sesame Chicken along with the Hot & Sour Soup. The sesame chicken had the perfect sweet flavor and the bowl itself was very filling. The Hot & Sour Soup had just the right balance of heat and tanginess -- absolutely delicious, and you get a generous portion for just a side item. Of course, I also had to order their famous Crab Meat & Pork Soup Dumplings. They even provide instructions on how to eat them properly: sip the soup out first, then dip the dumpling into the soy sauce/vinegar sauce. The dumplings were amazing -- the crab and pork filling was tender and flavorful. They also provide a small container of chili oil, and both sauces really enhanced the flavor. Honestly though, the dumplings taste great even without any sauce. Definitely another satisfying visit and I'll be back again. read more

They're doing a soft open right now. I'm not much of a foodie, but my co-worker had some for lunch. She let me try one and, well, I knew what was for dinner! We had dumpling combos, your choice (I had crab & pork) and my partner had chive and pork. The combo comes with 2 spring rolls (nothing special, but still yummy) and a drink of your choice with the default being cold soy. The service wasn't particularly noteworthy, but they were friendly as they pointed for you to order. We got in right at a dinner rush, but they still seem to be very quick and efficient. It was cozy and felt like you were stepping out of Austin. We also split some red bean pigs which were delicious. Reasonably priced and good portions. Definitely recommend. read more

It is kind of salty to me because they were saturated with brown sauce. The soy milk was just OK and nothing different than the instant one you can get from grocery store. Brought me back to Asia with this fast service and delicious food. Most of the people there ordered to go so there was plenty of seating inside at around 8 pm. The soup dumpling, pan fried dumplings and beef pepper noodles transported me to a food court in Shanghai. So nostalgic and comforting. Service was great and they played some great EDM when I was there. I was honestly sad when my meal was over. Why can't every fast food place serve this kind of quality and service??? Tried out 3 items, and they were decent albeit pricey for the portion size.: Xiao long bao (pork): Best plate we got; their sourced bite-sized dumplings are good. Soup inside on point and the pork is very round tasting. Always add vinegar. Scallion pancake: Very greasy, reminds me of actual Shanghainese food with the amount of time it probably sat in the oil, and chewy inside. Basically, not laminated enough, but still very tasty. Soy sauce dipping sauce was a nice addition. Pan fried pork bao: My least favorite item as the bread was way too thick and the flavor of the pork filling was off. Not bad, but not great. Not sure what I was eating even though it looked like the right thing. Sesame seeds are always a nice flavor profile booster, however. All in all, expensive for what it is, but tastes pretty good if you're craving actual Chinese food prepared for you. Will we be back? Probably not as the items I like can mostly be found in the grocery store frozen aisle, I mean, I literally saw one of their workers walk in the front door with a bunch of frozen bags over his shoulder. A welcome addition to the developing Austin dumpling scene. Conveniently located in Mueller this place delivers excellent soup dumplings and very good hot and sour soup. I am working my way thru their menu and there are many more hits than misses. I spent a lot of time in China over the last 20 years.
