I've dined here for dinner before but today was the first time I came for brunch. We actually did not plan to get brunch here but the wait time at 2 other restaurants were more than 45 minutes so we decided to come here. There was surprisingly no wait when we arrived around 10:30. We were seated right away and since we were kind of in a hurry, we ordered really quickly. The food took a while to come out, but I liked how the servers kept checking on us and refilling our water without us having to ask. We ordered the smoked salmon and avocado benedict and crab with squid ink waffle. The benedict was drenched in sauce and was pretty salty. I kept trying to push the sauce off but it was still very salty. We got spinach and mushroom as a side and this was extremely salty as well. The crab with squid ink waffle was very confusing. It was both sweet and savory and my mouth was very confused eating it. The crab was also very salty. The waffle itself was decent and it was chewy but since lettuce, bacon, and tomatoes were added on top, it made it salty while the waffle itself had condensed milk and some powdered sugar. I ordered the carbonara dish, and unfortunately, the flavor and texture did not sit well with me. Though some things have changed, I love what they're still offering: We weren't particularly hungry when we stopped in, but ordered their: Bone Marrow, Soft Shell Crab, and Bok Choy. Their Lombok Mule drink I ordered was tasty (not terribly spicy). I loved their Bone Marrow, as always, but it is def very rich. I enjoyed the Soft Shell crab (hubs doesn't enjoy vinaigrette-based salads, so this dish wasn't his vibe). This was my second visit. First time sitting outside in the Covid era terrace with our dog. We easily secured a table and servers brought our dog water and a menu. Cute. We came for the famous broth. My friend and I visited Bone Kettle on Sunday around noon and were seated immediately. The interior was very nicely decorated. You can also choose to sit on the outdoor patio. There is a 20% service charge for all dine-in transactions. We ordered a beef rendang omelette with a side of sautéed spinach and mushrooms, and the duck and pandan waffles. We really enjoyed the omelette. The beef rendang, which was a type of Indonesian braised beef, was very tender and flavorful. It blended in very well with the rest of the omelette. The side of spinach and mushrooms was very generous. Would definitely recommend this dish! The duck and pandan waffles seems to be the Asian fusion version of chicken and waffles, but I think the execution could be improved. The waffles had a strong pandan flavor but unfortunately they were very dry. The duck was well-flavored and the skin was crispy, but the meat was also on the drier side. I felt like the pork floss (chà bông) did not add to the dish. Overall the different components of the dish did not seem to mesh well together. Overall, this was a nice place to try out. The restaurant is located in Old Town Pasadena and is within walking distance of many other aesthetically pleasing eateries and boutique shops. I really love the portions, the garlic shrimp was my favorite! reminds me a lot of Hawaiian Garlic shrimp trucks. The dishes have a good amount of spice but not spicy. Really flavorful. Service was great, however during check out we (2 ppl) were surprised by 20% service charge for the tip. There was no room to leave tip no matter what kind of service you receive here. I asked to speak to the manager and he basically told me that due to minimum wage of restaurant staff, they want to make sure that all their staff are compensated fairly and competitively through the use of this permanent 20% tip arrangement. In my opinion this is one of the only restaurants I've been to that charges tips this way. I found Bone Kettle while a searching for a place for Father's Day brunch. The menu looked intriguing and appeared to have items that my family would enjoy. Reservations on Yelp was a plus. We arrived early for our reservation. The host asked that we sit at the bar for a few minutes while they prepared our table. The place was very busy. It was filled to capacity with a constant flow of customers checking in. The staff seemed to be handling it all relatively well, but the overall service did suffer some issues. Cold water was served, and our order taken shortly after being seated. We asked to have the Fried Chicken & Donuts as an appetizer, which was easily accommodated and came out fairly quicky. The rest of our order took longer than expected, with each one coming out several minutes apart. This turned out ok as we decided to share everything. The food is interesting. The Paloma fried chicken wings were nicely seasoned and very crispy. The Chinese donuts were light but were almost tasteless. We didn't care much for the spicy butter. The Steak n' Eggs were ok. The accompanying grilled sourdough was quite good, but the bone marrow butter tasted weird. They did not have bananas for the Nutella Banana French Toast. They were replaced with strawberries. It had nice flavor but was a bit dry. It would have been better with some butter and syrup. Their signature dish, Bone Kettle Bone Broth & Noodles was standout delicious! We chose to have it with the Braised Oxtail which was so flavorful and incredibly tender. We would absolutely return just for that. It took a while to get our check but that was not a big deal. We have found that most restaurants struggle during these types of weekends, so we try to extend some understanding, especially when the staff is noticeably working very hard to keep up.
