Dog sitting in East Pasadena and really wanted to get out and get something delicious to eat. Checked Yelp and sure enough, 1 mile away is Miya. A tiny Thai place in Altadena, at the edge of where the fires were, we were happy to support the business. Turned out to be an excellent choice. You walk in, order and pay at the counter and server brings food to your table. The decor is very nice. It can get quite crowded during peak meal times, so I recommend going after the rush. We had: *Pork and shrimp egg rolls that were fried perfectly and not greasy. *Pad Kee Mow with chicken, which was delicious but next time I'd get tofu instead of chicken. They use white meat and I prefer dark meat. *Spicy crispy pork belly, which had delicious favor but we did find the meat to be a bit over-cooked and therefore tough. Still it was delicious and took home the leftovers, which we steamed to warm up water and the meat was nice and tender minus the skin. Staff is super nice and helpful. Cannot wait to back! I got their Spicy Shrimp Pad Thai and omg... it was lowkey one of the best pad thai I've had in a WHILE. And I don't say that lightly because I'm picky picky when it comes to pad thai. It's literally the one dish I always order at any Thai restaurant, so my standards is kinda up there. But also... this was in the middle of the desert at a music festival so ngl I didn't have high hopes lol. But their Spicy Shrimp Pad Thai was so good!! The flavor was super authentic, spicy, tangy, just hitting all the right notes. The noodles had that perfect chewiness, not clumped together so they know exactly what they doing with their food! The shrimp were big and tasted fresh and all the toppings: bean sprouts, grounded peanuts, and lime, just brought everything together so nicely. Also the staff were super sweet and friendly, and I got my food in likes 5 minutes, gave me more enough time to sit down and enjoy my pad thai while waiting for Sabrina Carpenter's stage setup. Thai Fried Chicken - so good but their sticky rice is really dry and hard. I'd go for the Fried Chicken and the Papaya Salad separately without the sticky rice. Probably the only downside to meal, we barely touched the sticky rice. Tom Kha with Chicken - i'm in awe with how they get their chicken so tender and moist. Super adorable Thai food shop in Altadena. The vibe and decor inside is extremely cozy and homey. They have retro posters and arcade games and old vintage toys decorating the store, which is super cute. We waited around 30 minutes to order and get our food and there were quite a few people in the store when we went on a weekend around 7 PM. We ordered the fried rice with chicken and pad Thai. The portions looked relatively small, but filled us up perfectly. We were a party of three but only ordered two entrée since we weren't that hungry. The fried rice was not too salty and was very well balanced, and the cucumbers added an amazing freshness. The pad Thai had a strong acidity to it, but we enjoyed the crispy pork belly it came with. Both of the entrées were not too oily or greasy. The rest of their menu looked amazing and I hope to be back to try it soon. This place has been on my LIST for some quite time and so glad we got to try it today. I got there right when it opened, because I've always known it to have a wait. (Great trick!). I am not Thai, BUT, if I had to describe the food as "it tastes like home" that's how I would describe it. There was a comfort in the flavors: strong but not overpowering, tasty, and just comforting. The staff was friendly with everyone. We sat in the area where the register and kitchen are at, by the window. And it was really cool to see the comings and goings. Got here around 630pm on a Friday night. We were told the wait time is upwards of 20 minutes to get a table and 30 minutes for food. We lucked out and only waited outside in the cold for 10 minutes tops. We were seated and food arrived in about 10-15 min. When you check in for a table, you can place the order for your food first. This reduced the wait time significantly. Pad thai with shrimp - so much flavor, not your ordinary pad thai. It had small dried shrimp, a kick with some red pepper and a strong tamarind sauce. Khao soi soup - the flat egg noodles soak up all the flavors of the curry. It's a bit spicy for me but I love the contrasting textures, the softness of the egg noodles with the crispy noodles. Thai fried chicken - different than other fried chicken I've had. My husband loved it. It was covered in crispy fried shallots and you dip it in a sweet and sour sauce. A bit different because there's sticky rice included as well as a papaya salad with the fried chicken. The Papaya salad is kinda cooling after eating the fried chicken so I feel it balanced it out. Tom kha soup - probably one of my top dishes this time, maybe because it was one of the non spicy dishes so I got to enjoy it much more haha. It's savory, a little tart from the lime and the mushrooms were tender (also soaked up the soup so flavorful). There are multiple small tables all around with 2 larger tables. Every single dish at Miya is just absolutely delicious: flavors, spices, spiciness, freshness, mix of ingredients, saltiness... everything was PERFECTO! While I always refer this restaurant "in Pasadena", Miya is actually in Altadena -- just north of Pasadena. It is a cozy spot and well known for their homestyle dishes that is just perfectly cooked and seasoned. Once inside, you would order at the cash register before finding a seat. Miya is a hidden gem! I came on a Friday afternoon and service was amazing. If you're vegetarian/vegan there are options for you, but most things have oyster/fish sauce. I went here for a solo dinner on a rainy Friday night. I arrived at 6PM and it was already filled to the brim! The inside of the restaurant felt so cozy and the walls and shelves were filled with wonderful knick knacks. This was instantly a space I wanted to return to. Once you enter, you order at the front and pay before being shown to a seat. A waiter will bring you water and utensils. There are actually 2 dining rooms, so don't panic like I did when you see the first room full. I ended up ordering the famous thai fried chicken. Needless to say, the chicken was DELICIOUS! It was perfectly crispy and juicy. I'm so glad the pieces were already cut as well. The highlight was definitely the papaya salad though. I didn't even touch the sweet and sour sauce haha. This review is post fire and COVID-19. It was so nice to be able to dine inside the restaurant, which was adorned with various ornaments and decorations from Thailand. Service is quick, as they just keep bringing the food to tables until they remove your number. I found the food fairly authentic and the green curry hot enough to make my nose run. Lovely eatery! So thankful we have this amazing restaurant in Altadena. What a way to build back the Altadena community, especially after the fires. My wife told me about this place and said that we HAVE TO GO. Glad we did! We also tried a pumpkin red curry (to kick off the pumpkin spice season) and the fried chicken (with lion's head mushroom). The fried lion's head mushroom plate was our favorite, it tasted like fried chicken, with crispy golden fried batter, when you took the first bite, it almost tasted like chicken! The plate came with a small scoop of steamed rice and some marinated cabbage. The pumpkin red curry was a-ok, the red curry had good flavor, the dish had eggplant, carrots, green beans, and huge chunks of Japanese pumpkin. What a great find here in Altadena. Really authentic Thai food! The place brings you back not that I've ever been to Thailand, but the early street food beginnings in Thailand. The menu is written on craft paper and posted behind the register. Typical offerings are featured and we had the omelette over rice, Buddhas feast, vegetables, and Pad see yu. All amazing and delicious. The ambiance makes it even extra special here. Staff is really on top of it friendly and courteous. Food comes out as it's prepared so don't expect all of your plates to be out at the same time. Prices are on the higher end here. For three dishes and a flavored water with tip was $72. It can get somewhat crowded at dinner time since it's so popular. There's parking out front and along the side streets and in the back. Will be enjoying this place again real soon. read more

An Altadena staple, I've heard amazing stories of Miya and knew I had to swing by. The interior is so cutely decorated with ornate vintage Thai movie posters as if the business owners invited us into their home. As for the menu, it's extensive and offers a unique variety of vegetarian and vegan options. The eggrolls (vegetarian) were delicious! Perfect amount of egg to content ratio and had that signature crunch. As for the entrees, I tried their Chicken Khao Soi Noodles and Pumpkin Curry (comes with rice). The Khao Soi was delicious and drenched in mouthwatering hot soup. The pumpkin curry was creamy and just perfect for this rainy season. (def reccomend) The fried chicken was crispy and juicy, and the papaya salad worked perfectly the fried chicken. Pumpkin curry, comes with rice $17- the curry was very tasty and good. They literally add half a pumpkin. It's soft but not that soft. It'd be better if they blended the curry. Also they placed one entire carrot but I wished it was cooked more done. Fried chicken, comes with papaya salad, coconut sticky rice- fried chicken was combo white and dark meat. Almost thought they were closed for the day because the door was so heavy! I've never been here but wanted to check it out after hearing that they've reopened since the fires. Alot of the surrounding buildings have burned so there isn't much foot traffic in the area but Miya still had a steady flow of customers during lunch on a weekday. They had alot of cute figurines that definitely kept me busy while waiting for our food. We had their curry, crispy thai fried chicken, and pad siew, all of which were delicious. Authentic and delicious Thai food. A rarity outside of Thai town. Had the Khao Soi and Pad Kra Pow Gai. They didn't even ask for the spicy level. It was perfect. You can taste the authenticity of the dishes and not watered down like a lot of other Thai restaurants in the area. Wish they added the egg on top of the rice for the kra pow gai though.
