I used to go like this place several years ago, but each time it's gotten a bit worse. Service is quietly efficient, and really more like 4 stars but the food... last time we went we ordered -bento box for dinner: coconut soup broth was tasty and well balanced, but chicken in it tasted old and was so rubbery and weird. Fried elements of spring roll and wonton were decent, but the sushi in it was scary--the yellowtail dry, dirt colored, and smelled strongly of ammonia, and the other nigiri wasn't any better. Young sushi dude also put waaaay too much wasabi (probably to mask old fish smell and taste) on it, and ratio of fish to rice was off. Since I was at a Thai place, I'd had better hopes for the mound of pad thai on my tray but it too was funkified, smelling weird and tasting old. One of the only flavors in it was sugar, and I think there was chicken in it which tasted old and weird too. One of my kids got the fried rice with chicken and thought it was okay (it was curry, which had a weird flavor to me and the chicken was gross and rubbery). My other kid got the unagi roll and didn't like it--she kept saying it was too salty. She always orders this from every sushi restaurant we go to, so she's got a lot against which to compare this. I'll give this place one more chance as we need more good Thai places on the East side but they need to be more consistent with their quality. read more

The part of the shopping district where this restaurant is located is almost empty, so it might be a little off-putting to some. The food is worth it, though. Went with my sister, who is iffy about trying new foods/cuisines without a guide, but I know pretty well how far she can be pushed. :) We split an order of Thai spring rolls (3) - the menu doesn't specify how those differ from the other spring roll on the appetizer list, but I suspect it was because the Thai spring rolls contain meat. The sweet-sour dipping sauce contains fish sauce, so it's got that nice salty, piquant kick to it. Definitely not the usual duck sauce you get so many places. For entrees: my sis had the pad see you, which is thick rice noodles, shrimp and chicken w/ broccoli, carrots, and other veg in a dark sauce. She initially wasn't crazy about the texture of the noodles, but loved the flavor. I had massaman curry with chicken, asked for it medium and it definitely could have used a little more kick, but the flavor was wonderful. Ban Thai is a hidden gem. I have to admit I was not expecting this quality of Thai when my husband and I randomly decided to stop here on a whim. We came at an odd time, so it was not busy at all. We were seated and a waiter came by to check on us right away. The menu has both sushi and Thai options like a lot of local Asian restaurants. We did not try the sushi but opted for the crab rangoons and pad Thai with shrimp/pork. The crab rangoons were delicious! Maybe the best I've had in Cincinnati. Large and golden and the filling was on point. The pad Thai had generous portions and the sauce was just perfect: a good proportion of sweet, spicy and flavorful. Always amazing...I've never had a bad meal here. Service is great for both dine in and take out. I've had Thai food everywhere from Las Vegas to New York...this is some of the best around. Went here twice, once with my boyfriend's family for dinner, and another time with my boyfriend during lunch. Both times we came here, it was during typical lunch and dinner hours and the place was empty. So surprised! People need to give this place more business because the food here is authentic and awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. There's obviously not that much around here, but it's a good stop before going grocery shopping at Jungle Jim's or something. It's not just Thai food--they have japanese style bento boxes during lunch and they sell sushi rolls. Portions are really large, both during dinner and lunch service. You get complimentary soup when you come here, which is pretty much like chicken noodle soup. Lunch special pricings are really cheap. My boyfriend got the #3 bento box special. For $10.95, he received fried rice, 6 roll pieces, a piece of crab rangoon (crab meat and sweet cream cheese filling in a fried dumpling), a spring roll, salad, and watermelon for dessert). The drunken noodle is nowhere to be seen on the lunch menu, but when I asked for it, the lady said sure and it came out deliciously. The medium-hot drunken noodle is super delicious, with the noodles cooked perfectly. It comes with chicken and shrimp, with broccoli, basil, bamboo shoots, baby corn, and onion. Soooooooo good. I got Drunken noodles both times that I came here. During the dinner visit, my boyfriend also got the pad thai. Ban Thai produces some of the best pad thai in town, and it's definitely worth coming here for it. Service was very friendly and speedy. Stopped in today for a quick lunch. It was my first time and the food was served quick, hot and large portions. I got the Pad Thai with chicken. It comes mild, medium or spicy. To this day, I apologize profusely to the waitress I encountered, but I did not want the soup you offered me. I understand it was free, but I wasn't in the mood for soup. In the nicest way possible, I came for sushi. PLEASE STOP GIVING ME RUDE LOOKS. OK, now that I've told you how mad the waitress was at me, let's talk about the food... Eh. I ordered a box lunch with a california roll and a shrimp tempura roll, and the sushi was OK. I've definitely had better (yes Dancing Wasabi, I'm tipping my hat at you). The fried rice was RIDICULOUSLY salty, and this is coming from an Asian-American who enjoys her fair share of soy sauce and salt. I adore this little place, located in a strip mall in Eastgate. The food is great and the staff is attentive and friendly. We've been going here for about three years now, with an average of 2-3 times per month. I usually get the Crispy Pad Thai or Chili Duck. I always have a tough time deciding which to get because they are both great. I've never had anything that I didn't care for. The Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai, Chicken Broccoli, Mongolian Beef were all amazing. The meat they use is a really great quality. I'm not left wondering if the "chicken" I consumed came from the local animal shelter, which is always appreciated. The sushi menu is a bit lacking, but Thai sushi isn't particularly impressive to being with. The simple rolls are fresh and tasty. I recently had a bento box and loved it! It was enormous and I couldn't even come close to finishing it. We love that we are always able to walk right in and get seated immediately. The staff is very friendly and prompt. Went for lunch today, first visit ever. I ordered tofu pad Thai, and pineapple fried rice with chicken, both hot. Hot indeed! The rice was almost too spicy for me, both dishes made my eyes water and my sinuses clear out. Not mad though, I asked for it! But this time, being the good Catholic that I am, I ordered Tofu Pad Thai. Spice level medium on scale of mild, medium, spicy. Lunch portion was decent for the lunch price, but I have had bigger portions for the same price other places. It was flavorful and just the right spice level. Came with a veggie spring roll which wasn't bad. They were pretty busy today compared to the other times I have been here. I usually drink a ton of water, and the only time anyone stopped by the table was to bring my water, then bring my food. Otherwise nothing. I have had spicy tuna roll here before, and it was a little fishy tasting, so I didn't bother to order it this time. Tucked away in a small strip mall, in a large shopping area, Ban Thai would be easily missed without researching it. Fortunately, I found it on Yelp and Google maps, and was glad I did. For an appetizer, I ordered the steamed Goyza, which were a good starting point. These were listed as steamed, but seemed to have been lightly seared as well, so I was a little surprised, but the roscoe was great. I tried the Vegetable Delight, with steamed tofu, and it was excellent, with a delicious sauce, and a little bit of heat. I will say, I ordered it 3 stars on the heat, which was the hottest they listed, and it was pretty low on the heat scale. I am used to really spicy Thai food, so that was certainly less than expected, however, when I asked the server, she brought over some hot oil and another source sauce, which kicked it up a bit. This is a really great Thai restaurant tucked in a strip mall in Eastgate. The service is fast and the food is great. Their Lunch serving is perfect (if not more). Comes with a soup and egg roll. I have had several wonderful Thai restaurant experiences, and I never feel quite as athome as I do at Ban Thai. Mr. See and Nu always take wonderful care of me .The Sushi is always delicious and fresh, and I never have a bad experience with the food. I've been coming here since about 2003, and will continue to come on a regular basis. I recommend it to all my friends and even some of my customers at my work when they ask me where to eat on the east side.
