I have been going to Ban Thai since I was a little girl. My mom and dad read about it in the newspaper and decided to try it. My sisters and I would always get their garlic chicken or sweet and sour chicken entrées (which are both delicious). My dad usually got seafood delight, and mom liked the duck choo chee. We would go so often the servers knew is by name. :) I still stop in pretty regularly for carry out. My typical order is spring rolls, hot and sour soup, and duck choo chee ( medium spicy). As far as the ambience, it may be a little kitschy, but I love it! They have made some improvements in the last 20 years... But I still love the jeweled elephants. I remember as a kid thinking they were so pretty. I personally would definitely recommend Ban Thai to anyone. The prices are decent and you get huge portions, so you will definitely have enough for lunch the next day! read more

Meal- Crispy Pad Thai Verdict- I will definitely try this restaurant again, but definitely will order something else. Their curry meals sounded absolutely delicious. The lower rating was from the disappointment I experienced from their Crispy Pad Thai. This restaurant is a little hard to find, tucked in the corner of a somewhat hard to find strip mall. Restaurant and Staff- The staff, although a little awkward, was courteous and greeted me as soon as I walked in the door. The restaurant was dressed in the usual for what you would expect from a Thai restaurant. They did have a sushi chef behind the sushi/ bar area, but they also had a large pile of herbs that were being chopped sitting on a random table in the middle of the restaurant. Food- This is where my review dropped from 4 to 3 stars. I believe I honestly just ordered the wrong thing. I've had Pad Thai before, I frequent Thai restaurants often. So when I saw Crispy Pad Thai on the menu, I thought of delicious Pad Thai noodles with a hint of fried goodness. The dish itself was Pad Thai noodles that seemed to be uncooked or about 20% cooked. They reminded me of a crunchy topper that I have seen on a Thai dish before, but it was THE ENTIRE DISH. Aside from the crunchy, choppy texture, this dish was SWEET. I ordered it with Medium heat, and it was as if the sauce was just sweet and sour sauce. If I hadn't been so hungry, I would've just chalked this up to a loss. By halfway through the meal, I had picked out the chicken, the shrimp, and had eaten my Thai roll included with the meal. Price- admittedly, Thai food tends to be a bit on the expensive side, which is a price I gladly pay for a great, somewhat healthier meal. Come here at least once or twice a month. Always happy with the carryout and have had good experiences with the wait staff as well. Thai string bean is my favorite and the pad Thai is excellent as well. The only reason I disnt give 5 stars is the fact I've been disappointed with the sushi and the decor could use an update. read more

This place has gone down hill FAST. The tables are disgusting - they don't wash these seeing as dried grease and food are on there. The walls are COVERED in grease, food, dirt, dust. Who knows what else. The food is lacking anymore. The chicken tasted on the verge of purtid and the broccoli was obviously old - not even crispy and was rather moldy tasting. I was really disappointed today. The owner needs to invest in a cleaning crew and pay a little more attention to expiration of food! read more

I will never eat here again! In the area for a work conference and wanted thai. Such horrible service, I walked in 11:55, am seated at a table, given a menu. I order a few minutes later, luckily I brought some work so I was sitting there busy, but at 12:34 I got up and asked where my meal was, everyone around me who had come in after me had been served. They said it wasn't ready yet. I asked if it had even been put in, they said yes it will be ready in 10 minutes... Rule #1 Don't try a new restaurant if it is empty. Why didn't I listen to myself?! This would be a perfect place for Gordon Ramsey to visit. I'm certain the owners either think it's good (less likely) or have no shame putting out awful food. The chicken in my chicken Penang was so rubbery, I didn't eat more than one piece. It was like microwaved frozen chicken. I'm sure the vegetables were the same frozen stuff from a bad but I was hungry/brave enough to eat them. The best part was my ice tea and the white rice. Thank goodness you haven't found a way to mess that up. I told my waitress the pile of chicken wasn't eaten because it was bad and rubbery. She said she would tell the kitchen. No discount offered. I mean its not like I ate it and was trying to get a deal. Then again I'm sure being the only customers they can't afford to not get all the money possible. Someone has to pay for that white Audi sitting outside. My friend used to own a Thai restaurant in Washington DC. Im embarrassed for Thailand and all the people that think this place is good. Street food for $1 in Thailand is better than this. Just buy your own Thai sauce at the grocery store and dice up some of your own chicken. It will be 1/3 the price and a million times better. Whenever I have to travel as far to the east as eastgate or further, I usually stop at Ban Thai. Their sushi is decent for the price. Their lunch buffet is above average. My favorite dish is their seafood combo. I often even get a second order to go as this and everything they have us reasonably priced. So if you're in the area, this is the best Thai place around. read more

I'm glad to see that another poster (Tee M.) was disappointed and also said this wasn't the Ban Thai that it once was. We'd often eat at Ban Thai, (in 2006 it was difficult to find any sort of Thai food anywhere). We really enjoyed it and ate there at least five or six times in a month. The food was always good. We moved from the area in 2007. I recently returned to Cincinnati and had forgotten about this restaurant until my boss mentioned that she'd been there for dinner and had (in her words) "the best Pad Thai ever". Based on her comments I stopped by on my way home from work. It was a Friday night around 7 pm. The restaurant interior was pretty dim and outside of one couple, was totally empty. That's pretty ominous sign, especially for a Friday night. I was tired/hungry after a long day so decided to take a chance and I asked to see a carry out menu. The woman that "greeted" me at the front door (well it wasn't a true greeting - she scowled at me and handed me their carry-out menu). The paper menu was very difficult to read, the text from the line above ran over the printing of the next menu item.I quit trying to decipher it and ordered the Pad Thai.. I placed my order and the grouchy woman asked what spice level; I asked what their scale was, she looked annoyed at my question. She said between one to four. I chose level 3 (I'm a fan of spicy food). She swiped my card, no thank you, no mention of how long I'd have to wait. She walked away and that was the last I saw of her until my food appeared about 20 minutes later. Got home, opened the container - for $12.95 I felt the serving size was pretty skimpy. I'm not a big eater, generally when I order Thai/Chinese food I'm able to get a couple of meals from it; not this time. The noodles were very greasy; they tasted like they'd been cooked in old oil. There was very little spice it didn't taste like the chef had used any spice/chilies. If this was what their Level 3 is, they need to consider revising their scale. The pieces of egg were rubbery and cold. I think there might have been a total of five or six very small (salad sized) shrimp. After a couple of bites, I completely lost my appetite and ended up throwing the rest of it out. I'm a bit surprised to see all the four and five stars ratings here. I'm glad these reviewers had a better experience at Ban Thai. Maybe I just came on an off night, but I won't be coming back. I realize that everyone has different tastes but for me, next time I'm jonesing for some good Thai food I'll be heading to Bangkok Bistro. read more

Living in the Eastgate area, Thai choices are limited. This however is a worthy destination for Thai cuisine. My favorite dish is crispy pad thai and provides the same flavorful experience each time I get it. I get carryout so much the owner recognizes my phone number when I call. There are better places in Cincinnati, but if you're in the Eastgate area; it is a worthy selection. read more

For Thai in the Eastgate area- def the best I've had. I tend to eat the same thing every time- Shrimp Pad Thai. Honestly, this pad thai is the best I've had in the city. There is ALWAYS enough to take home for leftovers, and it keeps very well. I recently tried the Prick-Prow and it was delicious, as well. As far as apps go- the sushi is always fresh, and everything is generally well-priced. We did go with some friends this past weekend who ordered the spring roll appetizer- one spring roll came out. With the exception of that, I've always been very happy, both with takeout and dine-in. read more

I was in Cincy recently and had a craving for Thai food. I found this place on Yelp and ordered it for takeout. I got the holy basil chicken, spring roll, and an extra side of rice. I ordered the chicken hot which is exactly what i was looking for, it was quite spicy but not so hot that you had to stop eating it. I'm glad I didn't go medium or thai hot. The flavors were very good and the spring roll was excellent. If i lived in the area I would frequent this place regularly. read more

I know it's not fabulous, but compared to the other Asian restaurants for miles around it's a 5 star place! If you read the other reviews, I have to wonder why they only gave Ban Thai 3 stars. And I'm not even a Thai food fan. I get the Beef with Macadamia nuts and ask them to leave out the fish sauce and to make it 0 spice. The result is terrific (if you like ginger). My husband, who does like Thai food, has eaten many of their dishes and does like them. Portions are neither skimpy or huge. He usually finishes his dinner and I take a small amount home. Obviously this depends on how big an eater you are. read more

I recently developed a severe allergy to avocado, and even after informing the waiting staff, and having to send rolls back to the kitchen (after arguing about the obvious presence of avocado) they cross contaminated my food. I picked up some carry out here today for the first time at lunch. I got the Chicken pad thai lunch, which I felt was average priced ($6.75). The portion size is pretty large for a lunch. I asked for extra spicy, and got it (this is a problem at most places around here, I think they hear an american voice and think you don't really want it that spicy). The dish itself is better than any other thai place IN THIS AREA, and I think that's the key. If you live near downtown, or Hyde park, there's a lot of thai options that beat Ban thai. So I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. BUT, for this area, it really is one of the best (Anderson/eastgate/milford). They were busy for lunch but still had my order done in 15 minutes, and the restaurant was clean and inviting, the staff warm and seemed genuinely concerned about the satisfaction of its customers. I will definitely be back, but the location does help as it is 10 minutes from both my home and work. :) read more

After being seated, it took several minutes for a server to acknowledge me and when he did the only thing the said was "Ready to order?". I had the Panang shrimp curry which was pretty decent, not a whole lot of shrimp. Server only walked by once to check in on me. Food was okay service was lackluster at best.
