I received a gift card in December 2021 and finally redeemed it for lunch in July 2023. The place was empty. The staff was rude and seemed annoyed when we came. She stated twice (from a distance) that the gift card was two years old, which I'm not sure why it matters. The place was filthy - walls seats and doors were dirty. The food was not good, perhaps made worse by the negative atmosphere and rude staff. They deducted the entries from the gift card balance and wanted a cash tip. I would not recommend ever buying a gift card from this place. Too much of a hassle. We love Thai food, but not this restaurant. I use to love to go to this place, but after our last experience I wont be back. The server seemed irritable but we brushed off as maybe shes just having a bad day. Tried to make conversation maybe it would pep her up but clearly something was going on with her and a staff member from the kitchen. A small group who sat adjacent to us received the wrong dish and the way that the server snapped at the customer was completely unprofessional. Now the mood or tone of our dining experience completely change to just an awkward ambience. The topping of the night was when my aunt was turning her dish a disgusting grilled bug was just hanging out in her food. Of course, my aunt declined to eat the food and the response we got was a dismayed look from the servers's face, and a reply of I don't think so.... "I don't think so"? What did she mean? Apparently she took it as an insult and told us that if we're not happy, then we need to pay for our food and leave. Seriously can you believe that, she's going to kick us out because they manage to stir fry a bug in someone's plate, but not only that; we need to pay for it and leave! This used to be in my top 3 favorite restaurants and it's really disappointing that it has gone so downhill. I used to come here so often they had my order memorized. I am severely allergic to capsicum (which is in chili powder) so I can't have my curry with spice. 5 years ago I could order my food with no spice no problem, but the past several times I've gone here I have ordered my mango curry with zero spice, telling them that I have a severe allergy and it has come to me filled with chili powder and chili peppers and super spicy. The only reasons I can see for this is that either they are deliberately ignoring my allergy or their food is premade with the spice in and they just heat it up, so they are unable to take the spice out, but they don't want to tell us that their food is all microwaved so they let me eat it like that anyways. Very disappointing that I can no longer eat here without risking going to the Emergency Room in anaphylactic shock. Also, the serving sizes are so much smaller than they used to be. Even the rice we order to-go comes half filled. I'm so sad to lose this restaurant! read more

Ruthai has a vast menu covering a variety of authentic Thai dishes. Personally, I have dedicated my life to trying the Red Curry everywhere I go, and this place did not disappoint! Fair warning though-- it can get a little bit spicy. Thankfully, the servers ask how spicy you want your dish to be on a scale of 1-4. Despite having a medium spice threshold, I decided to try 3 and I was left sweating from the already spicy Red Curry. (It was still worth it!). The ambiance: Limited options for floor seating are available, but they only seat 4 at each table. Luckily, my group of 6 went on a quiet Tuesday so they were nice enough to let us rearrange all the seats. It's a small and quiet place in general-- definitely a hole in the wall! Good Thai food and excellent take away! I called after work, the lady on the phone was very helpful and explained the differences between the curries. I was able to request a specific level of hotness and picked one curry for me, one for my wife. One was mild, with lots of veggies and with distinct peanut taste, I requested chicken in it. The other one was more coconutty, but with a slight chilli kick, so it all balanced out. The rice was packed separately. The food was ready within 20 minutes from my call and nicely packed. Quality and flavorful food with excellent service and a fun atmosphere! I have been here several times in the past, and finally convinced people to go last night! I love the Thai food here. We started with edamame and crab wontons for appetizers. The edamame was a small portion but the wontons were very good (maybe the best in the city!). I got the Emerald Curry with shrimp at medium. I asked the waitress if I should do medium or hot because I love spicy foods. We opted for medium because green curry is made from green chilies. It was a good choice. It's a slow, cumulative spice that builds as you eat it. With brown rice, it was amazing and plenty for leftovers! My company got chicken pad Thai woon Sen (labelled as wood sen on the menu; pad thai with mung bean noodles instead of rice noodles) and mango fried rice. Both were very tasty! My friend ended up adding duck sauce to his fried rice because he wanted it sweeter. The service was great too. They didn't have an issue with us coming in at 9:30 even though they close at 10. (Don't take advantage though people; be nice and you'll get good service) One of the staff's children were there, and their giggles and helping find the bathroom was too cute! This tiny Thai joint is easy to miss in mt lookout but you are missing out if you don't try it! The food is always delicious, and the best in the area. Watch out though because when you go from mild to medium and it is hot! I love the royal swimming tofu, with steamed tofu and we also tried the duck which was so good, especially for carry out. We have visited Ruthai 3 times so far, and this place is growing on me. :) It is a small restaurant, and I love its casual and pleasant atmosphere. It is not corporate and is nicely decorated with some local Thai art. Since its dining area is smallish, when it is busy, it might get a little bit crowded. But I kinda like the social ambience the crowd provides. I especially love the elevated "floor" seats with cushions (traditional Thai cushions). We have to take off our shoes in order to sit at these tables, but we love that! (I am a native Taiwanese. Having meals at an elevated floor seats is quite common and reminds me of home!) Now the food. We have tried their papaya salad, house salad (with peanut dressing), hot and sour shrimp soup, curries, pad Thai with shrimp, and chili sauce dish with chicken. They are ALL good--flavor-wise and portion-wise. Their curry entrees are rich in flavor but not too heavy. What I especially like about their curries is that they all contain a variety of vegetables, along with the protein you choose (you can even pay a little bit more to add extra vegetables to any of your entrees, which is nice.) Another great thing about their curry dishes is that they gave you the right amount of rice, which means the rice does not serve simply as a filler, as a lot of Asian restaurants tend to do. You can also choose either jasmine rice or brown rice along with your curry. We always chose brown rice, and I have to say that they know how to cook brown rice well! (I am a very picky rice eater. And I can tell the quality of the rice right away!) I also recommend their papaya salad! It is spicy (you can adjust this), refreshing, and definitely appetizing! Their hot and sour shrimp soup has a balanced flavor of sweetness and sourness. Yum! The house salad is not simply boring iceberg lettuce but contains a variety of other fresh vegetables. Peanut dressing is definitely a key to the salad! Tonight I tried their pad Thai with jumbo shrimp and extra added vegetables. It is definitely one of their signature dishes! What makes their pad Thai shine is the nice sweet and savory sauce they use to stir-fry the rice noodles and the scramble egg in the noodles! The egg adds a nice rich flavor in this noodle dish! Yum! Now the service! The staff are always friendly and attentive. My husband always got extra-spicy dishes at this restaurant, and our servers never hesitated to add more water when needed! I came mid-week for dinner and ordered beef basil noodle and strawberry smoothie, and the bf ordered beef with mushroom & snow peas and thai iced tea. We both enjoyed our meals, and there was an appropriate amount of spice. I enjoyed my noodles very much, with the only complaint being that the noodles were a little over-cooked / over-saturated, and they were rather soggy/mushy in texture. My bf felt like they skimped on rice, but they were happy to give more when we asked. The beverages were delicious! The entrees range in price from $9 for noodles, to $21 for specialty duck. The service was prompt and courteous. Parking is a little bit of a pain in this area, but that's not the restaurant's fault. We'll be back. ----------------------------------- Explanation of my rating system - 5*: Epitome of something, the best I've had, would LOVE to go back 4*: Great food and happy to go back regularly, but not the best of the category 3*: Food is fine. I don't think Ruthai's is necessarily the best Thai food I've ever had but I absolutely cannot give it anything less than 5 stars. My wife and I eat here (mostly takeout) at least once a week and that night is always the best night of our week. We love splitting an order of the tiny spring rolls (always with an extra sauce because it is absolutely too good for one little dipping cup to be enough) and I swear by the basil leaves stir fry with pork. The spice levels can be a little bit erratic but that's not really an issue because they tend to be on the tamer end, when it comes to heat. Between my wife and I, we've probably tried at least half of the available entrees and they've all been great! The service is truly next level as well. After just a few weeks of calling in orders I started to be recognized on the phone and in person and at this point they know me by name. I absolutely cannot recommend Ruthai's strongly enough. read more

A couple of Sunday's ago my wife and I decided we wanted to order in dinner. We quickly decided we didn't want pizza and would rather have some sort of Asian. Eventually we settled on Ruthai's Thai Kitchen, which is just down the hill from our house. We almost decided to go elsewhere once we found out that they didn't offer delivery, but my wife offered to pick up our carry out order while the Bengals game was on the TV. I didn't get to see the inside of the restaurant, but I've walked and driven past enough times to know that it isn't a very big place. She mentioned that they have some traditional tables with seating on the floor. Sounds like it could be a fun experience eating in, so we will have to do that in the future sometime. As we typically do we decided to order a couple of dishes and split them. My choice was the basil noodles with chicken ($9.95), which features stir fried soft wide noodle with tomato, bamboo shoot, green bean, bell peppers and fresh basil. This dish typically comes with egg too, but I had that removed. Every dish gets a choice of mild, medium, hot, or Ruthai hot. I figured that Ruthai hot would be way to much and decided to go with hot. Even this spice level was perhaps a little too much, and this is coming from someone who loves spicy food. Aside from the overpowering spice the ingredients were all fresh and cooked perfectly. My wife selected the Massaman Curry ($10.95) with chicken as well. The meat is simmered in coconut milk with a special curry paste, sweet potato, potato, carrot, snow peas, and ground peanut. This dish was excellent! She ordered medium on the spice scale and I felt that it could have used a little more spice for me. It seems that it may take some time to get used to their spice scale and the effects on various dishes. The serving sizes were large and the prices are fair. My boyfriend and I got a recommendation from friendand had a great dinner! It's BYOB so we grabbed drinks at the UDF right next door, which was super convenient. We asked to sit in the platforms with cushion and got vegetable spring rolls which were fantastic and everything we wanted them to be! The sauce doesn't look like anything special but it is very flavorful and pairs well with the warm, crispy rolls. I got the red curry with tofu at a mild spice level and absolutely loved it! I was worried that it wouldn't be spicy enough but the spice level was perfect for my liking. I finished the whole dish! It was full or flavor without being heavy.
