My husband and I love this restaurant!! We do not eat out often, but every time we come downtown we chose your establishment. I know ppl leave reviews to complain but this review is to compliment your cleanliness, service and taste of food We always order crab ragoon, swt n sour chicken add shrimp fried rice. Very consistent. read more

I grabbed lunch and Shanghai with a friend and tried a few different things. Their hot and sour soup was delicious, not too watery or spicy. I like the crab rangoons and tempura shrimp, the carbs were a treat after spending the say exploring outside. I got the general chicken as my entree with fried rice. It was tasty but I was already do full that I didn't eat much. We also tried some cocktails and they were a hit too. Their staff was small, but mighty and kept everyone's table running smoothly. Give them a visit! read more

I got this food to go and took it to work. Holy moly was it fabulous. I love the spice 5 Szechuan chicken with fried rice. I always end up having two maybe three meals from it. The veggies are wonderful, I have to say my favorite would be the baby corn. They taste wonderful and have a nice bite to them. The servers are always really nice, even though all I do is order take out. If you work near by I highly recommend them, they are always super fast. The inside is always will nice, they have a bar too. read more

Visited on a weekday evening--since it's downtown, we did meter parking across the street. The restaurant has a confusing vibe, lots of flashy traditional Chinese decor but the menu is very fusion with Thai and different Asian cuisines. Staff was friendly and quick. I ordered the Shanghai noodles to be 6/10 spicy and it ended up quite spicy, and I have a pretty high spice tolerance. The flavor was great though, and portion size was pretty big. I expected more from the snow peas, they came just on a plate by themselves covered with bits of garlic, but overall tasted pretty good other than having a bit too much cornstarch. The stir fry was not bad but nothing too special. Prices are good for the portions though. Overall 4 stars because I really liked the Shanghai noodles! Not super authentic Chinese place but not a bad option in a pinch. read more

Perusing the streets for 1 night and 1 night only. I perused, perused, and perused. Wasn't sure what I was craving. BOOM! A nice employee at a dessert shop recommended shanghai on elm, to that young human: thank you! It was pretty empty, but it was a tuesday at like 7:30. In any case, it appeared all of the patrons at the bar were locals--which I love! I got some szechuan wontons and sweet basil chicken--got it a 7 on the spice scale. Everything was great. The sweet basil chicken was savory, a bit sweet, and absolutely wonderful. Super complex and loaded with veggies too. It wasn't too spicy, i honestly was hoping it'd be spicier but the waiter said the spice level gets hot quick so i didnt want to overwhelm myself. The szechuan wontons were great as well. A homey, laid back, chinese diner with great service, great food, and easy going vibes. Definitely a spot id hit again. read more

I was excited to check out this place because they had really good reviews and it opened late since I wasn't able to grab dinner before 10 o'clock, so my options were limited. Unfortunately, this is not authentic Chinese/shanghainese food. I ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup and it basically was sautéed Mongolian beef put on top of the noodles. The dish was extremely salty and it did not taste like Taiwanese beef noodle soup at all. I also order the steamed shrimp dumplings, which tasted pretty much like the same ones I buy at the supermarket to steam at home, definitely not homemade. The service was quick. The space was large. Since it opens late, People come in especially after baseball games. unfortunately I won't be back. read more

First of all, kudos to Shanghai for being open at 10:45pm on a Saturday night. I think they are open until 2am. We were looking for a place to have dinner after having a late lunch. We went to the Aronoff Center for a show and wanted to have a sit down dinner. This place was busy and hopping for late at night. Lots of young kids too! Quite a positive vibe. Now onto the food. My wife had the orange chicken dinner with fried rice. I had the bourbon chicken dinner with fried rice. Honestly, there are other "fast food" Chinese restaurants we frequent that are much tastier than the food here. One of the negatives for me was to get bourbon chicken dinner that was deep-fried chicken. EVERYWHERE else bourbon chicken is a marinated chicken NOT deep-fried. Now I'll know to ask. If I had known, and still wanted bourbon chicken, I would've gotten the bourbon sauce on the side to dip. The egg rolls were just ok. The crab Rangoon was just ok too! So egg rolls and crab Rangoon = deep-fried. The reason I would've liked a marinated chicken. Our server was really good and attentive. Everyone that greeted us was extremely friendly. This was not a bust, but things I wish I'd known before ordering. read more

I've been ordering the Shanghai noodles here for 20+ years--back to the Shanghai Mama's days on 6th Street, when they stayed open till 3 a.m., and the drum roll ushered in "noodle boy" hand-pulling in the dining room. The point: it still tastes the same. Same comfort, same balance, same satisfaction. When I want a reliable standby for delicious Asian cuisine, this is it. If you're new, start with the Shanghai noodles; if you're chasing the memory, they've preserved it. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE. My favorite dish is the Mongolian beef. Second is Singapore street noodles. Staff is friendly. Love the spring rolls too.

Came with a group of 6... Service was excellent, food was mediocre for me. I got the Szechuan Steamed Wontons and the noodles were nearly disintegrated. There really was not much flavor to them at all either. I did enjoy the cold noodle salad and spring rolls (which I DO NOT believe they were made in house) read more

I was in town on business and got in a wee bit later than I expected. As soon as I got settled into my hotel room, I went straight to ordering some delivery. I noticed Shanghai on Elm had great reviews, even from people I know personally, so I decided to give them a go. I ordered crab rangoon, veggie spring rolls, and shrimp pad Thai. It arrived right within the delivery window and the food was still nice and hot. My appetizers were fried to perfection and made great snacks later on during my trip. You could tell that they didn't come out of a freezer. The pad Thai was downright delicious. The portion size was good and it was super flavorful. It was a bit spicier than I expected and I can be sorta of a wimp when it comes to spice, but I couldn't put it down. I like how they really piled the nuts on top because texture is a big thing for me. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to order from here again. The price point, portion size, and the fact that everything was super tasty did the trick for me. read more

I love this place so much. Go often and get new things. Everything rocks and they're open late!

We were spending a couple of days in downtown Cincinnati and I saw a ton of great Yelp reviews for this place. It did NOT disappoint! In fact, we went again the next night. Shanghai noodles are AMAZING. Loved the egg rolls, vegetable spring rolls, crab Rangoon, and potstickers (fried or steamed)! I could dip everything in the ginger soy sauce that comes with the potstickers. The service was fairly quick, and the place is very clean and well decorated. As someone who doesn't often review anything - I hope this convinces at least one person like us to give it a try. I'm going to be dreaming about those noodles when I'm back home missing them! read more

The service is incredible, the food is authentic and the atmosphere is welcoming and not tacky or gaudy. 5 star for sure

We sat at the bar. Has great service and conversation. I had not been to Shanghai since it was on 6th Street in the 2000's. It was even better than I remember. Crab Rangoon was hot, crispy and tasty. The 5 spice wings were delicious. Main dish for us. Beef Lo Mein. Yes, it was crazy good. We devoured the bowl. I've been missing out but you best believe, I'm back on track. read more

Went 15 minutes before closing on a Wednesday because it was one of the only places open. Looked good at first glance but boy oh boy are looks deceiving. Rice? Absolutely bland. I don't think a drop of lemon juice, seasoning or anything that would add flavor was completely absent. Chicken? majority broccoli, zucchini and asparagus. The mushy chicken(reminded me of microwaved Tyson chicken-DISGUSTING) was layered on top, thus making the portions look generous...but in reality, you've only got a few pieces to go with your what's seems like vegan bowl. The FOH lady was very kind and quick to get my order, the atmosphere seemed good. I liked the aesthetic. Wasn't able to dine in due to closing so soon, but seemed nice. 10/10 would not recommend read more

I saw the menu looked like they had some good authentic Chinese food, but unfortunately I didn't think it tasted that great. The Garlic bok choi wasn't roasted enough, and the leafy part were all cut, it was all stem. The XLBs which I was really excited about, didn't really have any soup inside (the mark of a great soup dumpling). Lastly, the Szechuan scallops, the scallops weren't seared on the outside. I do appreciate that the scallops were good sized though, I've ordered scallops at Chinese joints only to get those mini scallops that taste terrible. The scallops here are at least decent sized, but they weren't executed well, and the sauce was just ok. read more

Shanghai on Elm is a hidden gem in Cincinnati. It is awesome -- fantastic service, casual atmosphere, and absolutely delicious food! I've been here twice now as a visitor to Cincinnati and I can't wait to return. I ordered the veggie egg rolls to start and they are super tasty and perfectly sized and priced for an app. For my dinner, I ordered the tofu noodle soup -- SO good! I ate until I couldn't anymore. If I could replicate this soup I would. Super vegetarian friendly which is what I'm always looking for! And shout out to Amber T for being a super attentive and nice server! read more

Quaint evening in for a restaurant that sets itself apart with late hours in a city that is already sleep. Walking in feels like a typical Asian themed restaurant, but with a mafia movie playing on the big screen. Their many awards are displayed humbly behind the bar. The bar staff welcomed me in and served me some water while I looked over the menu which has a dedicated "Gluten Free" section including the Honey Garlic Chicken. The vegetables were crisp, the chicken was tender, the sauce was flavorful. The spice level 4/10 was perfect for my palette, leaving a nice sting in my throat. I also tried the Yucca fries which were perfectly seasoned, aromatic, and with an interesting, addicting texture. The food was surprisingly served fast, hot, and deliciously. I can't wait to come back to try the Silky Tofu. read more

Number one in Cincinnati thus far!!! Open late, close to the River for dinner and a walk on the banks!!! I have my late nite spot again!!!

I wasn't sure about this one; largely what convinced me to try it was learning that it was the descendant of a family-owned place that closed during the pandemic. This newer location is in a downtown area that's very walkable to most of the stadiums and event venues and notably, they open at 4, which meant that I could eat a real dinner and get to my event on time. They have a vegetarian menu which has some interesting non-standard options and is notable for something they call "cafu", which I was told is house made and gluten-based. The dish I asked for 8/10 spicy and it was, clearing my sinuses without ruining my evening. The cafu came in fried blocks that looked rather like tofu, and had a light, layered texture that was a bit different; it was certainly easier to eat than your typical seitan, which can be tough. I was happy for the choice of rice either brown, white, or fried at no extra charge (brown for me, always). A few light veggie dumplings made it a meal. The house mustard that I asked for never materialized and I wasn't charged for it and was fine without. It's a very hip modern space with clean bathrooms (albeit with some slightly unclean art). The portion sizes were on the smaller side and I'm not saying one should come to Cincinnati for the Chinese food, but it was good enough that I'll probably go back. read more

This place is massively underappreciated. The food is delicious -- I **love** the faux orange ribs!!! The Old Fashioneds have good cherries and one enormous ice cube just like they should. And the wait staff are sweet and attentive. The hubby has dietary restrictions that are pretty severe, and these folks repeatedly go out of their way to find things that he can eat. This implies, of course, that they cook everything fresh to order. The best part for us is the fact that it's quiet: we can hear each other and we can get a table on no notice. But that's also why I'm posting: MORE PEOPLE NEED TO EAT HERE otherwise I'm going to lose a favorite restaurant! read more

Our new favorite takeout Asian cuisine! We have looked all over for a good, basic vegetable fried rice. Most places have rice with bits of vegetables or it's overly greasy. This place is really good - rice with big fat vegetables! We love it so much that it's hard to try anything else. My husband did get the sweet and sour chicken and said it was good. Decent sized portion. My only disappointment was the lack of a fortune cookie! But we will sacrifice that for a good meal! read more
