I run by Ruthai's at least twice a week and love Thai food, so not sure how it has taken me years to make it inside. My husband and I used it as date night and got one of the prime spots where you sit on the floor. I love when Thai restaurants have the low tables - it reminds me of eating in Bangkok (though there are clearly a lot of places in BK that use chairs, but still...) Our dishes were both delicious, with a healthy amount of spice and flavor. There's a variety of noodle dishes and hot/cold appetizers. The whole Asian fusion thing in Cincinnati always throws me off... how one place can serve sushi, Chinese food and Thai food well is improbable, if not impossible, yet every place here seems to try. Just focus on Thai food and do it well! This was better than Blue Elephant or Green Papaya or any of the Asian-fusion-maybe-Thai places we've tried in Cincinnati so far, so we'll be back. read more

First time trying this place today. I came with a friend for a quick lunch and was delighted with the food. The ambiance is that of a typical thai restaurant. They have a handful of sitting tables with cushions seen at some places but the majority of the restaurant consists of regular tables. It was fairly light on customers at our late lunch but service was great and we were greeted and fed promptly. They have a number of curry and noodle/rice options for lunch for which you pick your protein of choice. Prices ranged from $8-$12 for a lunch dish. They included all of your typical thai dishes (pad thai, red/green curry, etc) with a handful of house specialities. I had the panang curry with veggies & tofu and my friend enjoyed the pad thai with chicken. The food was warm and delicious, flavors authentic and ingredients fresh. The dish was slightly smaller than I would have hoped for the price. Spice levels were true to what you order; they have their own hot level above hot for those of you feeling adventurous. Ahh Ruthai's. This little hole in the wall has The Best Thai Curry in the whole world. I may be ruined for curry forever. When I go to Ruthai's, which sadly doesn't happen as much since they took out lunch service, I always get the yellow curry. They have a dinner special that is yellow curry with chicken, shrimp, and mango which is very yummy. Every curry dish also has lots of veggies too--carrots, peppers, onions, etc. The yellow curry has the perfect consistency for a coconut-based curry. It's thin and delicate, not syrupy. It is flecked with bright spices a that add wonderful dimension to all the components of the dish, but is perfect on its own. So good, I ask for extra rice to sop up every drop of sauce on my plate. Get it as spicy as you like. My husband is picky about rice. He loves it, but wants it to be perfect. Ruthai's has the best rice of anywhere we've tried, be it sushi rice or just the rice they serve with meals. The fried rice is also very good. I think the Pad Thai is still better at Bangkok Bistro, but you can get Pad Thai anywhere. Where else are you going to find curry-flavored heaven on a plate? Do yourself a favor. Awesome thai food! Some of the best in the city!! I get the pad thai with tofu or the thai fried rice almost every time I go. The lemon grass soup is the best in the city--hot, sweet, & savory! My husband loves their massaman curry-- it has peanuts, pineapple, & potatoes! The sushi is pretty good too! They are also a BYOB restaurant! My only complaint is that the portions have gotten small over the years! Very small restaurant, so go for an early dinner. They are closed on Mondays & the service can be slow. Hands down my current favorite place to eat. Value, service, quality of food, friendliness of staff, BYOB, atmosphere, and ambiance come together nicely at this hole in the wall Mt. Lookout gem. I have dined here over 20 times since moving to Cincinnati in 2007 and have had a wonderful experience each time. I have taken family, friends, and my girlfriend and all have requested to return here each time they come back to visit. First off, if you are expecting something like a RA sushi in Chicago or a Teak in Mt. Adams you'll need to check that attitude at the door. This is the type of place that you and your date show up in the mid evening with a bottle of wine, a 6 pack of your favorite beer, a great attitude and settle into a wonderful night of food, conversation, and people watching. Ruthai's is low key and as authentic as it gets for a local eatery serving Thai food. The sushi they serve is high quality and an added bonus to the wonderful offerings they have on their menu ranging from noodles to different types of curries that range in levels of spice. Massaman curry has always been my favorite and when you add crushed peanuts to the top with brown rice on the side, you can't go wrong! As far as sushi, they have all the standards, plus some special rolls if you want go crazy. The seating here is limited to about 35 people. I would recommend sitting at a table instead of the traditional floor seating due to having long legs. The ambiance is some thai music in the backgournd, one LCD TV above the sushi bar, some authentic wall hangings and art, and just wonderful hole in the wall decor. Sitting at the sushi bar is wonderful and the staff will chat you up about the Reds, Tiger Woods, Taylor Made golf clubs, or any current events going on in the area. As mentioned above this is a BYOB location which does NOT charge a corking fee and they are happy to accommodate you with wine bottle openers, glasses, and on occasion shot glasses. You can pick up cold beer and wine next door at UDF if you forget it on the way. The type of crowd is usually Adult low key ranging from college students, recent grads, young professionals, and the 40s-50s crowd. Large groups are sometimes here and they are always having a good time. Have not seen too many kids, but I wouldn't be surprised if spicy and raw food doesn't suit their palette. Ruthai's is hands down my favorite Thai restaurant in Cincy, and I'm having a hard time finding restaurants in the NY/NJ area that even come close to comparing. Visiting the queen city always, ALWAYS, requires at least one meal at this restaurant that I miss so much! Their phad thai is great but my preferred dish is the massaman curry. Dude and I went here for dinner last night. After recently moving back to Cincinnati from an area with slim pickings in the Thai category, it was awesome to have a great Thai curry for the first time in ages. Dude got a chili sauce tofu dish which I tried and liked. I got the panang curry with tofu which was incredible (and made even better lunch leftovers the next day). I think their mild was a bit on the spicy side, so keep that in mind. Only complaint is that if you sit in the room where the entrance is, it can be a bit drafty and chilly. This is a simple storefront restaurant that offers the best Thai food in the city. The spring rolls are outstanding--hot, crisp, and generally perfect. There aren't that many places where you're generally safe ordering anything off the menu, but this is one of them. That said, the sushi here is just OK--you can get better at Ichiban, which is less than a block away. Ruthai's has been around for eight years or so, and it's never gotten the liquor license. Be sure to bring alcohol if you want it, since there's no good place to get decent wine in Mt. Lookout if you don't bring it with you. read more

Vegetarians rejoice! You will find a ton of veggie-friendly options here, which is a sigh of relief. Don't worry though, your omnivorous friends have a full menu to choose from as well. The place is cozy, divided into two dining rooms. One one side there are low tables where you take off your shoes and sit on brightly-colored cushions. The other side (separated by a half wall) are standard dining tables. Though space is a premium, they're still able to seat a respectable amount of customers and I never felt like I was infringing upon other diner's personal bubble. The food was great, exactly what I've been hoping for in a Thai place! I had the Tom Yum soup with vegetables to start with and it was, dare I say, yummy. My boyfriend had the Crispy Tofu, served with plum sauce. It was perfectly deep fried, not too greasy or heavy. For entrees, I had the Royal Swimming Tofu (steamed), because I'm a fiend for anything with peanut sauce. I got mine medium hot for the spice level and wound up adding more chiles to it for some extra heat. I was happily surprised when the server asked if I wanted white or brown rice with the meal-- It's nice to see brown rice gaining some popularity! My boyfriend was overwhelmed with options (which I think is always a good thing) but finally decided upon Massman Curry with vegetables. It was good, but we both agreed my peanut sauce stole the show for entrees. For desert we had the Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango. It was my first time having this and holy cow-- So good! The rice was served warm with a sweet almost milky (coconut milk? I'm not sure) glaze topped with ripe mango and white sesame seeds. If you get the chance to try this, do it! Color me happy (and surprised). We have been visiting the Cincinnati area off and on for a couple of years, and have been pretty disappointed with the Thai fare in and around the city. Towards the last couple of visits to town we discovered Ruthai's and have stuck around ever since. We are way less often down in this area, but when we are I am excited to come back and feast on some food. Last time we visited we brought some locals whom had never been, and they very much liked this place also. A sure winner are the tiny springrolls. They may be tiny in size and name, but they are huge on flavor. They have a well balanced chicken filling, which means that sadly I no longer consume these rolls of joy. It doesn't happen often that I enjoy pad thai, but I seriously love this one. It is sweet, but not overly so and has a nice variety of flavors going on to where it is not one dimensional like most others. Truth be told - dinner wise this is all I have ordered here, ever. I just read a review raving about some royal tofu in peanut sauce, which I may have to get next time we visit. The tofu is good, it comes fried in the pad thai but does not taste oily like it sometimes can. My husband gets the beef pad see ew (or like they call it; soy sauce noodles), which he much enjoys. I think the wide noodles are a bit gummy in texture which is offputting in my book. All in all this is a great place to eat, if nothing else for springrolls and pad thai. I am sorry I don't have more variation to speak of. I see that many other Yelpers are claiming this is the best Thai in Cincinnati. I don't claim to be any authority, but I was not overwhelmed. Those who comment on parking difficulties...true. But it's Mt. Lookout, and you just plain will have parking difficulties there. It's better now that the parking lot is open in the square, but still a bit of a pain. The best thing about Ruthai's would have to be the atmosphere. Great storefront Thai, completely unpretentious, warm and bustling without being too loud for conversation. The menu is diverse without being intimidating, and the service staff are friendly and helpful. The food is portioned well--I didn't in any way felt like I'd overpaid for my food. The only reason this is three and not four stars is because I simply wasn't bowled over by the food. I've had the Panang curry, chicken & mushroom coconut milk soup, and a few different sushi rolls. I found the texture of the Cincy roll disappointing--I wish it had more crunch. Overall: nice spot, good dinner. Not the best Thai I've had, but reliable. read more

I had a sushi craving the other night, but Cloud 9 and Ichiban were too busy, so my husband and I meandered over to Ruthai's Thai Kitchen. After a rather unfortunate food poisoning incident with Thai food in Phoenix, we both unfortunately no longer enjoy Thai curries. So sad. But have no fear, Ruthai's has other things to offer! We ordered a tofu Pad Thai-- "medium" spicy is actually not that spicy, but the tofu had amazing texture on the outside and silky soft inside. Since we were already craving sushi, we ordered a couple rolls, which were good as well. We sat at the sushi bar, and the sushi chef was fun, nice, and provided great service. Other than him, though, the service was slow and lacking. In any case, decent Thai food, decent sushi, and I would want to try the pineapple fried rice. This is a bit tricky to find in Mt. Lookout square. It's next to the new location for Ramundo's pizza. Walking in, I was hit with some mixed emotions. They have some really great seating that is just low tables and mats to sit on. That certainly brings a uniqueness to the dining experience, but these tables only really fit about 2 people. The decorations are a bit like a garage sale, but I'm not entirely convinced that's a bad thing. In general the place seems a tiny bit musty if you look around at the walls and ceiling. The bathrooms aren't bad. The staff is nice and attentive. The food that I've had has always been good, if not great. Portion size is generous and pricing is quite reasonable. It's one of the better values in Mt. Lookout square. I will say that I'm a bit particular about good Thai food and haven't found much in Cincinnati that I consider to be especially noteworthy. To be honest, Thai food has never really stood out to me. They're all good in their own way if I'm going to return to a restaurant, but it's really obvious when it's bad. Ruthai is solid for Thai food, but I think what sets it apart is the seating options (uhhh you can sit on a rug/floor and eat at a coffee-table-like table?! and it's BYOB with no corking fee?! Best Feature: AMAZING food!! Worst Feature: Location; parking can be difficult! I'm a huge fan of thai food. Ever since I first tried it many years ago, I found myself drawn to the flavors, spice, and variety Thai cuisine has to offer. On a snowy, cold Sunday night, we headed out rather late to get some dinner. It also happened to be my birthday, so I had specially picked a local Thai restaurant to visit. This was one of the ONLY ones open late - we knew they closed at 9:30 p.m. so we headed out around 8:30 p.m. to try to catch them for some carryout. The drive was perilous, as it was snowing fairly hard and had been all day. So getting there was a bit tricky and when we discovered it was in Mt. Lookout, we hoped to find parking. Busy times in this area can be awful for trying to find parking spaces. Luckily there was one just in front of the restaurant and it's on a side street leading to the main area of Mt. Lookout. We grabbed a spot and hurried in to find a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant was separated into two sections; one near the sushi bar and the other near the register. We were seated by the register. The interior is clean and inviting, so I felt pretty good already when we sat down. We ordered a Vegas roll (approx. $12.00) and two chicken pad thai. My boyfriend ordered his medium spice, while I ordered mine at the spiciest level. They only have three options; mild, medium, and hot. The sushi was AMAZING. The Vegas roll had about 8 pieces or so and each was divine. When they brought out the pad thai, I was pleased to see they gave out large portions which is good since they are priced at $9.99. The pad thai was delicious! I found the chicken very tender and succulent with a lot of flavor and spice. My boyfriend and I compared it to our favorite local restaurant in N. Ky, Mae Ploy. We determined the only reasons we like Mae Ploy better is the pricing and the spice levels. The spiciest level Ruthai's has to offer is what would be about a 6 at Mae Ploy. If you like a lot of spice to yours, keep that in mind. My boyfriend wasn't as thrilled with his medium - he isn't a huge fan of spicy food, but he definitely felt the medium was a bit lacking. I loved mine; the spiciest level was definitely the best choice for me (I love spicy food)! They also have a television available in the section with the sushi bar. If you are looking for a bit of entertainment, that is a plus. It wasn't obnoxiously loud or in my face, either, which I appreciated. Service was great! Our waiter was VERY attentive and gave us fabulous service. The prices for sushi are a bit higher; nothing ridiculous, but definitely on the pricier end. The sushi, however, is delicious and worth it if you're a sushi fan. We will definitely be back! I've come here twice- once to try the Pad Thai after hearing great things about it and recently for curry. The place is simply decorated (looks like a typical thai restaurant) and small. The room is essentially divided in half with floor tables when you walk in and then seated tables on the other side of a dividing half-height wall. I wouldn't recommend this place for groups larger than 5-6 since the set up of the room would make it hard to push tables together. The Pad Thai was good but I don't consider myself well versed enough in the dish to make a strong comment about it. The curry on the other hand is very well done. I ordered the red curry with chicken and extra vegetables. The plate is enough for one large meal, don't expect many leftovers unless you aren't very hungry to begin with. The vegetables were all fresh and they include a good variety of carrots, zucchini, squash, eggplant, cauliflower and broccoli. There was not too much chicken in the dish (think sliced white meat) but there was enough. The flavor was mild and the sauce silky. Definitely hit the spot when it comes to thai curry. read more

Thai is one of my favorite cuisines. I have eaten in different Thai restaurants throughout the country. Do to Ruthai's location and previous reviews we decided to give it a try. First off don't go by the hours of operation here on Yelp. Ruthai's is open at 5:00 pm not 4:00 as listed here, they close at 9:30 except Friday and Saturday. Pretty typical interior, lots of vinyl and cheesy Thai decoration. (made in china lol) They could use a little updating but don't allow this to interfer with your experience. The service was great.. She didn't interact with us much, but my beverage was never empty, and a dirty dish never sat more then two minutes after completion. The appetizer were out in under 5 minutes, and our entrées followed shortly after we finished our appetizers.. The food was true to taste. We order the Vegetable Spring rolls and spicy tofu.(not very spicy but delicious) For our main course I order my favorite Pad See Yew (its under a different name on their menu) Great meal, though once again not spicy enough. She order the Asparagus and was in love with it. Now she gave me a little resistance toward Thai food at first but came around quickly with the deep rich flavors. One of my more preferred thai places in hyde park - less commercialized, more home-grown and authentic. Prices are fair (personally feel that other places invest more in prettying up dishes and lessening the actual food) for the portions. The staff is pleasant & not pushy. Overall, I never feel like I'm just another table getting to get pushed through, which I have felt at other places in the area. I've never tried the sushi, but the thai food is def. my preferred stop in Hyde Park. Con to the place is that the hours are early and do not always match when I get my intense cravings for great thai (usually late at night). OH - and BYOB! read more

Ruthai's Thai Kitchen is one of the many options for Thai food around the Hyde Park and Mt. Lookout area. What sets them apart is there combination of good food and service along with their good weekend availability. Many of the places around Hyde Park and Mt. Lookout on a Friday or Saturday night will have a long wait longer than should be expected for restaurant in this area however this is not the case with Ruthai's. On a busy Friday night we were able to be seated immediately and our server was attentive and helpful throughout the meal. Both are appetizers main dishes were fresh and flavorful and the spice level was just us we had ordered. I would definitely choose Ruthai's again on a Friday night. They even do takeout too for those weekday nights when you want to get quick, delicious food after work! read more

Went in tonight with my wife after a long day to have dinner and relax. It turned out one the worst evening I had for a long time. The food took 45 minutes to come. The owner son maybe 6yrs old was going bet the tables trying to sell some raffle tickets and speaking very loud!!! You can bring your own drinks for dinner, a table of 12 young people were sitting next to us getting drunk on a case of beer and being very loud I could barely hear my wife. Never going back there. Apparently it's BYOB. That is great. Cause I was without alcohol. (Thanks Yelp!) I have been meaning to go to this place for months. It's like 5 minutes from my house! I'm glad I finally made it. So we sat on the raised platform with little reclining cushions. Love that! Prices were great. $10 for curry (definitely a "for one" size, in my opinion) and average $7-8 per sushi roll, which is what we had. The sushi was warm, which I prefer. Everything was really good- not exceptional. And the service sucked. We spent a lot of time sitting around. They took so long to take our order that we weren't sure if we were supposed order at a counter somewhere! Anyway, cute atmosphere. Again, the BYOB is probably crucial to this equation. I live by Mt. Lookout and decided to try Ruthai's as a change from the more than abundant American fare that Cincinnati never lacks. I did takeout and ordered the shrimp Pad Thai (2/5 spice) and chicken basil fried rice (3/5 spice). The spiciness levels were recommended by the person picking up the phone. Also just for kicks and a bit of nostalgia, I also ordered a Thai iced tea. Before I get into the meat of my review, I will need to say this: Thai food is hard to make. It's not because of what's in the food and it takes a long time to make. It's getting the balance of flavors just right: salty, sweet, sour, spicy. If the flavors are well-balanced, you reach bliss. If it's off, then it's just disappointing. It's an all or none deal. And to spoil things, I've recently had the fortuity of going to southern California, which boasts the standard for good Thai food. The best dish to test this out is Pad Thai -- deceptively simple, but complicated flavors that is the ultimate test for any Thai cook Overall, the dishes were just OK. The Pad Thai was pretty standard with noodles that were fairly dry, lacking much sauce that just didn't haven't that good balance of flavor. The basil fried rice was a little better and had a bit more kick. However, the chicken was quite dry. Flavors were expected for a basil fried rice, but not as strong as I would have liked it to be. The cooking could have used a bit more temperature (natural gas cooking stove?) (or less time on the stove) with regards to cooking to maintain the chicken moistness, and to also add a little char to the Pad Thai and basil fried rice to give it some extra character. The Thai iced tea was pretty good, but perhaps a bit too sweet, and half of the drink was ice (out of a 16oz cup give or take), which was a disappointment. I was expecting a bit more with regards to the flavor of the dishes, and since each dish is about $12 (pretty pricey with the obvious ethnic markup for not that much food, either), my search for good Thai continues. read more

One of our most frequented restaurants in Cincinnati. The food is delicious. We usually go here on nights we want a salad and sushi. The salad is really good for a thai restaurant. I love the dressing and the fact that they put more than just lettuce on the plate. The sushi is fresh and creative and you can bring your own wine with no corkage fee (Always a plus in my book). The staff is very friendly and doesn't try to rush you out when you've finished your dinner... this is the kind of place I'd happily eat at every weekend. read more

BYOB thai restaurant in mt. lookout. What more can you ask for? The food is pretty good, although I've been underwhelmed by most of Cincinnati's thai offerings. Parking is horrendous at mt. lookout square, although that's hardly their fault. Food alone, this place would probably get three stars. They get the fourth one because you can bring your own beer or wine. There aren't many of those around in Cincinnati so I have to give them props for that. The seating is average at best. The traditional sit on the floor thai tables are a bit too small for me... but I'm 6'4", 220 lbs... not 5'7", 150 lbs. So it depends on who you ask. This Thai restaurant is in a corner of the Mt.Lookout square. We wanted to try this place for a long time because of the rating. But most of the weekends when we are thinking of eating out, this restaurant opens only for dinner. This time we chose to go for a later show in the evening, and go for dinner at Ruthai before. Parking can be bit tough on the square. If you are getting there late, you could park in the lot which belongs to the drycleaner on the other side of the road. The place was tightly packed and a little too cozy. I ended up hitting the person on the table behind me! Like many people, me and wifey have fixed items to try when we try a new Thai restaurant. For her, it is the fried rice. For me it's the curries. She has a craving for Crab Rangoon, but this place did not have that. Tiny rolls seemed to be a favorite on yelp, so we ordered that and Shrimp tempura. We were not impressed by the dishes. The sauces and the appetizers did not seem to go well together. For main course we ordered fried rice and green curry. For curry, mild was too mild. For fried rice medium was too hot. Half of what we ordered we could not eat and ended up packing them. None of the dishes had much flavor to it, so we are not sure if we will go back. read more

This charming little Thai and Sushi restaurant in Mt. Lookout is a nice change from some of the more swanky joints in the area. The coolest thing about dining in is you can sit on these little platforms and recline as you eat, if you're into that kind of thing. I'm not, though. Given the choice, I'll take a chair every time. The Thai dishes are a bit better than the sushi. A lot of reviews suggest that it's pretty authentic, but, having never been to Thailand, I'm not a trustworthy judge in that regard. They taste good. I have had one awful experience here, though. Once a couple of the rolls I ordered came out and they had clearly been pre-assembled and refrigerated before being served, which was not good at all. I have to give Ruthai's five stars because it holds a special place in my heart, and from what I can tell I am no the only one who feels this way! My out of town family came to visit and I had planned on taking them to Zips Cafe. Being a small place, they were very crowded and we knew it would be awhile before we got a table. We cautiously proceeded to Ruthai's because we had some very picky, hard to please eaters in our group! My husband and I were raving to them about it and so they were willing to try. Well, that experience left all 6 of us very happy. The pickiest eater I know even found something on the menu and they were willing to make any modifications to make the meal to her likings. I have found this to be true with every person or group we have taken to Ruthai's. Everyone is always raving about their meal. I have been there dozens of times and the food is always fresh, colorful, and hot. My absolutely favorite meal is the Tornado Scallops. I can't order anything else because every time I have gotten this, it's just so darn good! I can tell they give you scallops based on weight over quantity. There have been times I have gotten 2-3 really large scallops and times I've gotten 5-6 smaller ones. I am okay with this because either way they always taste amazing with the right amount of breading. Lastly, the service. Yes. I'll agree with the others, it's slow. For years it was only one woman working as server and maybe an additional food runner. Last time I was there a younger person, pre-teen, was working as a server as well. I find this charming but I know others probably find it annoying. I think it's a cultural experience to dine at Ruthai's and a reminder that we Americans can be too demanding and we just need to chill out, relax and drink some of the beer or wine that we can serve ourselves. :) read more
