I agree with others, the décor is terrible. If you consider yourself a "foodie", you may want to consider another restaurant. Even has an ugly aquarium with ugly fish (just kidding). This place is just around the corner from my apartment, and has quite the following. A group of engineers I work with go weekly. I had the Teriyaki Chicken on one occasion recently, and have also had the Lo Mein. I thought my food was decent, but found the weird crunchy chicken texture off-putting. My wife has tried the Broccoli and Chicken and HATED the chicken texture. If I mention it she gets chills. The Spring Roll blew her mind though. Good flavors, good service, terrible interior décor, bizarre chicken texture. I would go back, but that is more of a reflection on the terrible food scene in the Eastgate area. I am quickly becoming a Thai food lover. The What a Feeling plate was very well prepared. I ordered it "Hot" which to my taste it was not. I'll have to try the Thai Hot next time. The wife and son ordered the Beef Macadamia and Ban Thai Steak. The wife who is very spice sensitive enjoyed hers and only commented on the ginger. So... we didn't check the restaurant operation hours (thinking it's like every restaurant operation hours) we got to their door, the "OPEN" sign was not lit, so we stared hard from the car, trying to see the operation hours. Then a lady (who later I met and is the owner of the restaurant) waved from inside. At first it looks like someone waving "not open". We reversed, then she cams closer to the windows and we realized she was waving "in". A hand signal informing us, just some in! It was 3:32pm and they are open at 4pm on Sundays. It was a warm feeling entering the door since we were really hungry and she open 30mins before. That's always a good sign. We ordered Chili Fish & Chili Duck. But I ordered their Sweet & Sour Soup (Tom Yam) as an appetizer. I am Asian, therefore when the soup arrived, I loved it immediately. I will be honest, for some who do not enjoy seafood as much as I do, the soup will not be your go to broth soup. It is a little fishy for most people. I personally loved it. The food came, it is a big dinner portion. Prepared to have some left over. To top it off, it was really delicious. I have always looking for good Asian food because sometimes I just want a Taste of home! This is the closest to home for me! I will definitely return! I'm not sure what everyone is whinging about WRT the decor because the food absolutely makes up for any shortcomings (not sure there were any). If you want BS decor - go to one of the slop serving chains and count the pins on the uniforms. We went here last weekend (Saturday 1900) and the Thai was fantastic: good flavor, vegetables fresh and cooked properly, correct portion sizes and good service. The only down check would be the service was a little too efficient and we kind of felt rushed - especially since the restaurant was not that busy. For our entree we shared the pineapple fried rice,medium spice. It came quickly and was hot and fresh. There was shrimp, chicken and a lot of generous pieces of pineapple, pepper, broccoli,onion and carrots. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because my husband's coke was flat and there were only 3 pieces of shrimp in the dish(even though they were large, would have liked a few more). Have always loved this place. My wife and I have been going since we were teenagers...and I am now 40. So, a long time. If I had written this review any other time in the past, it would easily be 5 stars. However, my thoughts have changed. The last two times we've gone someone has gotten sick. First my wife after eating Gulf of Siam. She said the scallops tasted a bit funny while eating it. And just yesterday my son got sick after eating Beef Pad Thai. He said it tasted funny so I sampled it...the beef had a very gamey taste. He became very sick later that evening. I'm not saying their food made them sick...but I definitely question whether it might have been the cause. Either way, it's a shame. Just told my wife that it may be a very long time before I can go back. Kind of sad since this establishment has always been special to us. read more

It's not a fancy place. Decor feels like it is from a different decade, but could be considered charming for an ethnic restaurant (it's clean and tidy). The sushi bar is nice looking but has only four seats. They seem to have a fairly standard selection of Thai food on the menu, plus specials, and a page of sushi. Ban Thai is tucked away in a strip mall next to a dentist and across the street from McDonald's. Service is efficient, polite and soft-spoken. Beer, wine and liquor selection are modest and keep mainly to the easily recognized standards. I ordered drunken noodle, which I order at least once at each Thai restaurant I eat at in order to form a fair comparison. I told the waiter that I don't eat any animal products. I asked them to substitute tofu and vegetables for the shrimp and chicken that it comes with standard. The food portions are sizable, and yet, I feel expensive for what you get and the establishment. I started eating and realized it was essentially a burnt omelet. There was fried egg coating everything (it was a little difficult to differentiate from tofu initially). I found this extremely unappealing since I don't eat egg, and it just smelled and tasted gross. I doubt I'll make any effort to return. read more

Ban Thai is way the hell out by Eastgate Mall...the guy that is the chef at Orchids said this is his famiily's favorite spot so we decided to try it. Meh - it's fine. This was an idea place for us to come as my son wanted sushi and we wanted Thai. My son was pleased with his salmon, California and avocado rolls. We got hot and it was good choice. The red curry was not so good. The red curry had broccoli. Onions, carrots and green beans in it. The red curry sauce was not good. I prefer a thicker coconut based curry that has hot and coconut flavor but that was missing. The curry sauce was very watery and not a good taste for me. Most red curry dishes have much more bamboo in the dish. The bamboo was not enough for my taste as they used the small bamboo. Definitely Americanized red curry. Broccoli just soaks up the curry sauce and just do not like broccoli in my curry. Taste is very subjective. I would give this restaurant as many Thai people work here and are so nice.
