The first time I came in, it was for clams at the bar (this is not a euphemism). The second, because it's simultaneously just like so many other Italian joints, but also one of a kind. I'd been hearing about Bamonte's for years (and Aziz Ansari blew up their old-school Italian spot even more), but living adjacent to Carroll Gardens I never felt the need to travel to Williamsburg for red sauce. When I finally walked through these doors, it was like stepping back in time. And I regret having waited so long. I love the close proximity to Lilia down the street; despite both being Italian restaurants, they are polar opposites, so don't expect similar meals if you can't score a table over there. This isn't the place for bright white tables and walls, colorful cocktails, and fancy plates full of pasta you've never heard of. Bamonte's is a dimly lit haven for martinis, house wine, and huge portions of dishes that are on menus all over the city, the dishes you've always known: Get the clams casino, shrimp parmigiana (take a chance and pass on the chicken, it's worth it), fried calamari, and pork chops with vinegar peppers. Ravioli, lasagna, and spaghetti will all hit the spot. Get some greens in garlic and olive oil to balance it out, and revel in a place that's been doing it right for a century. read more

You want to talk about "Old School" Italian restaurants? You cannot get more "Old School" than this Brooklyn joint - Bamontes! When was the last time you saw a cigarette machine, or a phone booth, or a phone book, in a restaurant? For me, maybe twenty years ago, and I'm being generous (more like thirty). I absolutely LOVED Bamontes. Everything about this place just knocked me out. The bar in the front of the house, the waiters in tuxedos, the hubbub of dishes clanging, the din of the patrons, this list goes on and on. Sure the food is good, but that's just a side note! As soon as I walked into Bamontes, you needed a chisel to whack the smile off of my face. Speaking of "Whack", if John Gotti was still alive, I would expect to see him sitting next to me last night having a giant bowl of pasta with red sauce. If you want to just have a monolog about classical Brooklyn hang outs, Bamontes would be at the head of the class. Enough about my take on Bamontes; how was the food - it was Good! Will Bamontes ever get a Michlen Star, no. But that's not even close to describing how wonderful and how much fun this place is. My calamari Fritti was good. My veal parmigiano was good. My potato and vegetables were good. My Martini and Borolo wine were also good. The food is just a backdrop on how terrific this place is. I usually do not do reviews but I thought it would be helpful. We really looked forward to eating here for the 1st time. From the outside to walking in, the ambiance had a real nice vibe to see how busy it was with all of the tables occupied. We ordered baked clams and also stuffed mushrooms for appetizers. The mushrooms tasted very rubbery with hardly a taste of breadcrumb and it was as if the sauce was just placed on top. The clams were better but there were only 6 to an order. For dinner we had Tortalini with Bolongnese sauce and Lasagna. The Tortalini was good but the lasagna was drowned in sauce and the sausage was warm. We also had meatballs that were warm at best. We asked for more water and had to wait at least 10 minutes for it. When we thanked the waiter he never said you're welcome numerous times. Also, the waiter never asked if we were done before he took our clam plate. Everyone likes to suck up the juice on bread. The owner, came over a few times and asked if all was ok. That is the way to operate a business. Granted that it was very busy, but protocol should still be followed. We had the experience of going for the 1st time and probably will not return. Ambiance gets a 5, but food and service get a 3 from us. We really wish it would have been what we expected. read more

Came here to celebrate my moms 82nd birthday. What a time capsule, from the decor to the wait staff everything was old school. My mother loved the whole experience. Now let's get to the food, delicious from start to finish. We had baked clams, calamari, chicken parm, chicken cacciatore, eggplant parm, baked ziti. Everything was fresh and delicious. Excellent on all counts! It does get booked in advance because it's quite popular here in Brooklyn and surrounding communities. The ambience is vintage, Italian chic if there is such a style but it's warm and kinda romantic. The food is authentic and family style. A little on the higher price side but well worth it. Leave room for the dessert because they are rather amazing! They also have a decent wine selection. Not good for walk-ins. Depending on the day of the week. Highly recommend that you make reservations in advance or you'll be waiting. Great for family dinners and special occasions. read more

Stay away. so many better choices for the money. Service is horrible mangers needs to be replaced and the food is mediocre. I was seated at 835 for a 8 pm reservation and it was downhill from there. the waiter was nice he cared and he actually was trying to accommodate but management gave him eight tables and he just couldn't keep up he was literally drowning. The restaurants formula is to entice you to drink so you become numb to the inferior food and service..Dinner was a total disaster and management didn't care nor did they do anything about the multiple mistakes. read more

As claimed by others as one of New York's best authentic Italian restaurants, I truly agree with that statement. Well, just for the food. Why two stars? The service. My friend and I ordered stuffed mushrooms, seafood ravioli and spaghetti and meatballs. They all came out promptly and delicious. The service was all right. Had to hunt down the hostesses twice for our 6:30 pm reservation. Once the food were dropped off we were barely checked upon on. Alcohol was never refilled. Hunt someone down to get our check. Also, we were sat in the back by the kitchen under that less than glamorous fluorescent light. Would I go back? Hard pass. But stuffed mushrooms were dank tho. read more

I like the old school Italian vibes. Love the decor. First disappointment, we were given extremely stale bread, actually could not even bite it. Hard as a rock. Was likely from the day before. Disappointed in portion size of chicken parm. Definitely not a $25 worth entree. Would be nice if it came with a side of pasta included, not string beans and oniony potatoes. No substitutions whatsoever so if you dont like green beans or veg of the day as a side of your entree well fuggetaboutit. Spent $180 for two people (2 entrees, 2 apps, 2 desserts, 2 coffees and a soda) no alcohol. Felt a little ripped off. Appetizer was missing a stuffed mushroom. Cannoli only filled on both ends to make it seem full, inside completely empty. Ice cream was so small it was gone in 4 spoonfuls. Our waiter disappeared the last half of our dinner we sat there waiting forever and had to ask bus boy to clear our table and take over the rest of the dinner. Bigger/thicker portion of chicken would be great too. Also, we can see into the kitchen, I lost my appetite watching a cook shovel food in his mouth and eat chicken off the bone and touch the food with the same fingers he was pulling the chicken bones out of his mouth with his fingers. read more

In Brooklyn for the day so grabbed a table at Bamontes for an early dinner. As soon as we walked in the bartender checked our vax status so they are doing the right thing there. As others have said just a very old school, cool Italian red sauce joint. Service was spectacular, great waitstaff. Cocktails were great and the food was delicious. Chicken, pasta, pork chops all excellent, as was the calamari and mussels appetizers. Seemed like some regulars in and a few characters as expected. Will be back for sure. read more

Visiting our daughter and son-law and they took us here. The inside reminded me of my grandmothers dining room - noise and all. Had a reservation and was seated right at 6:00 and our server showed up at our table dressed as a waiter from the 1960's which fit this place to a T! Food was good but not exceptional and since it was a Saturday night the place was so busy our waiter was running around and forgot to bring us our check so that was a thing. They sat us immediately which was great because my friends and I were HUNGRY! Ordered the baked clams (small portion) came with 6 small ones. Also the stuffed artichoke which was alright. The entree I stuck to the basics: spaghetti with meatballs. Sadly it was disappointing. Meatballs were dry and had weird aftertaste. The pasta was dry too. My rating is for food. The ambiance and neighborhood was great. Felt like I stepped into a tight knit community especially at the bar where you'd see locals chatting it up and enjoying the evening. Would I go back? Nope. It was my work mom's birthday, and she wanted to have her luncheon here for a change since we usually do, well, the usual. So we made reservations for our party of 12, and we were seated on the left just by the bathroom, by the wall. The overall atmosphere was dimly lit, with a very old-school Italian restaurant vibe. The floral wall paper, the chandeliers, and the big family style tables. Expectations were pretty high. We all ordered, and had asked if we could get some hot and cold antipasto for the table so we could all share. We were told it would be 20 minutes until that came out, since a large funeral party came in with about 30+ people before us. Since we were on a tight lunch hour schedule, we declined and ordered our entrees instead. Fast forward about 40 minutes. We were all wondering about our food, but no one had asked, because we understood the kitchen was pumping out food for the huge party. From outta no where, one of the waiters came over to our table, with a nasty look on his face and in a rude tone said, "your food will come out when it's ready." I would hope so! The comment was not called for, and we didn't make a fuss or anything. Yes we were wondering, but don't be rude! If you're having a bad day, keep it to yourself. When the food finally did come out, I was happy with my stuffed veal with mushrooms and cheese. It was a very generous portion, and was worth it in my opinion for the price. Then, the sides came out family style such as green beans and potatoes. The waiter then said that he could get the antipasto order out for us now. We were like, um no - we're good because we waited this long, so we couldn't be bothered with the antipasto now. You could tell he was trying to make up for the slow service and his rude behavior for the sake of his tip. Too little, too late in my opinion. The food was good, but I can get this same kind of quality closer to home and without the nasty treatment. read more

There's nothing bad to say about Bamonte's except I wish I lived closer so I can frequent Bamonte's weekly. Old school italian food and the portions are huge. Bartenders and waitstaff are amazing. Their lasagna is to die for. My husband had veal parm on the bone and he said it was one of the best he's had. If you are in Brooklyn, do not miss Bamonte's. This was very good. We got baked clams, burrata, fried zucchini, chicken parm, and spaghetti with garlic and oil, then finished with Italian cheesecake and a tartufo. The chicken parm is the staple dish in any red sauce place, and I thought this one was good, but not in the absolute highest tier in NYC. It had some crispy edges which were very good, but was slightly thicker/tougher than the ideal, and I thought the sauce lacked significant flavor. The spaghetti, on the other hand, was significantly better than you'd get at most red sauce restaurants -- my wife and I both loved it. All the rest was good as well. read more

I had the most wonderful, old Brooklyn dining experience last evening at Bamonte's. An old friend surprised me with a dinner invitation to surprise another old friend who was in town. I live here in Williamsburg. Bamonte's took me back fifty-five years to when I was a student at Saint Francis Prep, which was then a nearby single-sex high school. My friend has known the family who has owned the restaurant for over a century, for over forty years. The entire experience was delightful and classy: the food, the ambiance, the owners, and the servers were top-notch. read more

Came here late on a Friday night at 10 PM for dinner we got linguine with clam sauce, the mussels marinara, spaghetti Bolognese, tiramisu and it was all delicious. although my friend said the Bolognese was not amazing but everything else was super good. I must is definitely the mussels marinara they were amazing and the sauce was a must. We use the bread to sop it all up. The decor is super old-school, this restaurant has been here for 120 years and I love that Goodfellas type of Italian restaurant. it's a bit of old New York which is rare to see nowadays. read more

Very classy elegant Old style Italian Restaurant- that is perfect for family gatherings. . We are long time friends of the Bamonte Family. Judy Bamonte, has a youger sister & brother Anthony. We all grew up together in Elmhurst /Maspeth, Queens.. Judy was in my sister's Phyllis' wedding party. The reception at their restaurant has always been outstanding. Whenever my Dad ( both he & my mom have since passed) would let me choose a restaurant for a special ocassion- I always chose Bamonte's. We have been here for Holiday and birthday dinners- the food- the service- the wine. I particularly always ordered the lobster tails , shrimp cocktail, hot and cold antipasto and my favorite prosciutto and melon. There are no words to describe how delicious their Italian pasta, specialty and seafood dishes really are. This place holds lots of memories for me. I can't wait to go back again. read more

Came here with friends for a birthday celebration and had heard about how old fashioned this Italian spot is, like a more casual and cheaper Mulino's. I love that kinda thing! Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to Mulino's. Got the mussels in their marinara sauce and my boyfriend got the seafood pasta. They were out of their stuffed artichoke, sadly. The marinara sauce was, by far, the biggest hit of the night. If I ever came back here, I think I'd get the raviolis with their red sauce, but I likely won't. read more

The hostess was friendly. It felt like a true Italian atmosphere. Thre server was top notch. We got thre seafood antipasto which was delicious. My daughter got the linguini and clam sauce. I got the Chicken Cacciatore. It was delicious but make sure you watch for bones. We also got the veal. I just wish the later 2 dishes had a small side of pasta to go with it instead of potatoes and green beans. Even if you got a small side of pasta with marinara for a small upcharge.
