I want here a good while ago to this popular Italian spot which has a unique fun name which is no way related to kugel. They've been open for quite a long time and for good reason as it was overall very tasty. It's cash only and the closest ATM is a good two blocks away so make sure to bring $. The staff was nice and the inside is rustic and charming and quite large. I don't believe I had anything to drink as I was a bit low on cash. My appetizer was a soup which was either the soup of the day or what was on the menu back then which was quite tasty and I think it was around $8 or $10. The soup was vegetarian with a grain inside and some spinach and another vegetable. The spinach were cooked well and the bread on top was crispy with a strong garlic flavor. It was overall tasty though next time I likely would just get the bruschetta as the roasted tomatoes and anchovy one sounds outstanding and the bread itself was the highlight of the soup. My main dish was the Calf's Liver Alla Veneziana for $28 with caramelized cipollini onion & balsamic vinegar with potatoes contadina. I am a big fan of liver and these were cooked a bit more than I would usually like but they had a good texture so who am I to complain? The caramelized onions along with the cooked down vinegar added a good sweetness to the dish with the onions in particular being a highlight. This all paired nicely with the cooked down potatoes which had a nice firm texture and a bit of spice. It was overall very tasty and I would get it again. There isn't much to complain about here. In a sea of Italian places dotting Brooklyn Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods, this is one of the better ones and there's a reason why there's always a line here even though it's cash only. Just good quality Italian food with reasonable prices for the portion sizes. read more

Noodle Pudding continues to kill it! I love that their menu changes ever so often to reflect on whatever they have on hand. It guarantees you're eating the freshest possible ingredients, and it makes you feel cool when you order something off-menu. I made good on my promise to return for the osso buco earlier this time, and was able to snag a seat early at 5:30pm. Even at this hour, the restaurant was nearing capacity. We ordered the calamari and Caesar again as they were standout favorites from last time, as well as the osso buco ($48), chicken alla Milanese ($29), tagliatelle with chanterelles ($34), and spaghetti squash ($10). The osso buco was fall apart tender, garnished with a zesty gremolata that helped cut through the richness of the veal. The Milanese risotto was perfumed with saffron and deliciously creamy as well. The chicken Milanese was pounded thin and fried to crispy perfection and I especially enjoyed the house made giardiniera which was bold and loud. The pickled radicchio was an excellent choice, sour, sweet, and bitter all at once. I also really enjoyed the tagliatelle with chanterelles, except the chanterelles weren't properly cleaned so there was a bit of grit in an otherwise creamy, earthy, delicious plate of pasta. read more

Noodle Pudding is the restaurant we all wish we had on the corner. They don't take reservations, but you usually have a decent chance of sitting down, especially if you roll in early. The staff is friendly. The martinis are filled to the absolute brim (you have to sip before you pick it up). They have glasses of house wine for $5, and it actually tastes decent. Think about that for a second. Can you get a glass of wine anywhere in Brooklyn for $5 right now? That isn't absolute swill? This is something that only happens in Europe now. They are adorably decorated for the holidays. They wrap their vegetables in cheese (see the excellent frico d'asparagi). They sell their excellent calabrian chili oil by the jar. Their lasagna never disappoints. In fact, just about everything is excellent, but some items definitely shine more than others. Oddly enough, the noodle pudding that accompanies the braised shortribs (excellent flavor) is one of my least favorite things I've eaten here, despite it being the namesake. It was fine, just underseasoned, and too close to noodle kugel for my liking. Basically, I like it here, and wish I lived closer. read more

Pretty good! Very four stars. Longtime rustic Italian spot that's been in BK Heights for decades. Always busy after 6pm on. Outdoor seating. But the pastas themselves needed far more salt for them to be very flavorful. The zucchini pasta was incredible once it was salted more, deliciously fresh. The perfect Italian restaurant where everything is superbly done. Top notch service that's efficient and friendly. The room has a warm and inviting feel; I'd describe it as old school vibe without it being outdated. We got the mussels in spicy tomato sauce, the mazzi rigatoni alla norma, the chicken alla milanese, and some kind of spaghetti for the kiddo. All the pasta was cooked to perfection and if I could come back here again, without a doubt I would 100% get that chicken. The tiramisu slaps and so does their chocolate cake. The octopus was savory and topped with chopped pistachio. I ordered the pappardelle with mushroom, spinach and a generous amount of parmesan for my entree. This is an old school, cash only establishment with a menu that changes every day (they post it daily on Instagram.) They have a house red that is pretty tasty for $17 a bottle. Everything on the menu is classic and delicious from the octopus and potatoes to chicken Milanese. Make sure to order what they have on special, like the gnocchi or porcini mushroom pappardelle. Great pasta spot that makes you feel like you're in Italy. Lots of options here, including rotating specials so there's something for everyone! Food: We ordered family style and split the garlic bread, calamari, bucatini and linguine. I highly recommend the garlic bread -- it was a great starter and convinced me to purchase their in-house Calabrian chili oil. The calamari was also lightly fried and not too oily, so it doesn't sit heavily. Service: the hostess was incredibly sweet and sat everyone as quickly as possible. We went on a warm Saturday evening so the place was crowded, but she did a great job of seating everyone according to their preferences. Our waiter was also very engaging and checked in on us often. Insider tips: cash only! So be prepared for that. They also sell their Calabrian chili oil you can take home for $20. Good for: date nights, impressing out of towners. One of the best Italian restaurants in the city. What appears to be a hole in the wall at first, transforms into a cozy, homey, feel good spot sprinkled with fairy lights. The waiters - who have all worked here for years - warmly greet regular patrons and get you seated. A few important notes before we get to the food: this place is strictly cash only, and t's only open from 5 pm onward. Try to get here earlier as there's usually a 45 min wait. On to the food: everything you get here is a win. Portions are large and sing in your mouth. For appetizers, would recommend the ciabatta with balsamic olive oil. Yum. My favorite entree is the Fettuccine Ragu with Shellfish. The shellfish was a tad sandy this time but was fine the last time I was here. Can't say I was a huge fan of the cannoli (too sweet for my taste), but my boyfriend quite enjoyed it. Absolutely fave dessert here: Panna Cotta. This is a really intimate and cozy restaurant in Brooklyn for home style Italian food. This was our first time here and we were lucky enough to be seated next to the windows where we could watch everyone passing by on the sidewalk and had a good view of the restaurant. Service is a little slow so don't come here with the intention of leaving under an hour. Its a spot for good friends and conversation, definitely not for a quick bite or business meal. Please note that this restaurant is cash only. There is an ATM down the street at the convenience store if you forget on your way over (We may or may not know that fact because we forgot until we were a block away). Everything we had was fantastic and their wine selection was pretty good. Our favorite parts of the meal were definitely the main course. We highly recommend the tagliatelle. I had dinner here on a summer night. It was my first time, and I was glad that I came on Thursday, when I was lucky to grab a table outside, at this walk-in only gem. I was so impressed with the ever-changing menu and the passion which the executive chef clearly has. So glad that I picked the focaccia, which was fluffy and wonderfully seasoned. Incredibly underrated old-school spot. Stumbled in here one night and had such an unexpectedly stellar meal. The place feels like it's been in the neighborhood forever. The comically large chairs and long shared wooden tables feel out of another era, and the multicolor Christmas lights strung from the ceiling were a nice touch.
