My brother works in Brooklyn and had been meaning to try Popina for a while. The idea of fusing Southern and Italian cuisine intrigued him, and since I was off from work the other day we thought i was a good idea to meet up for dinner. I'm not too familiar with all that Brooklyn has to offer, so I was excited to check this place out. Popina is unassuming from the outside, and the somewhat simple aesthetics continue after entering the restaurant. It's not a large space - there is a banquette to the left with tables set up, and a large bar to the right which has additional seating. I'm assuming there's a backyard area since some people were being led there after we were seated, and several reviews suggest so. There's a mostly grey color scheme with lots of clean lines and minimal decor. The menu isn't large, but there's a good variety of apps, pastas, and mains. But first, drinks; I ordered a mezcal margarita which was smooth and had great flavor. For food, we decided to start with two apps: the arancini and the stracciatella. The rice balls were served traditional style sprinkled with cheese and came with marinara sauce on the side. They were tasty but their marinara was slightly too acidic for my taste. the stracciatella was good too - it was paired with asparagus, peas, and some light greens which complemented the creamy texture of the cheese. I wanted to try their pasta as a main - the orecchiette stood out to me the most so I went with that. The dish was good - the pasta was served al dente and with pesto sauce and also contained fava beans. I admittedly did not get the most Southern dish on the menu, but there was definitely a good representation. My brother got the pappardelle with braised ham hocks which I tried a bite of and really liked. For dessert they only had two choices: cheesecake and panna cotta so we got both. The cheesecake was noting too outstanding IMO, but the panna cotta was great. When I attempted to order a coffee with dessert I was informed that they don't serve it - kinda strange and something to keep in mind if you're dining here. Service was great, everyone was friendly and the food came out at a good pace. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Popina. I wouldn't necessarily hike it out to Brooklyn just to dine here - this is more of a neighborhood spot from my perspective. However, if you are in the area this is a great option with delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere.

I had passed by Popina on the way back from Red Hook a few weeks ago. The cozy environs on an otherwise industrial stretch of Columbia Street appeared inviting enough for me to bookmark the address and suggest dinner here with a friend a few weeks later. Compared to most chic Italian restaurant in the area that claim some garbled Brooklynized "Roman" heritage, Popina offers a seemingly unique Southern influence, with appetizers like a pimento cheese dip and potato rolls, or the arancini made from Carolina gold rice. These were the less tasty but more unique and intriguing constituents of our meal. In contrast, I found both the kale paccheri and Gorgonzola tortellini decently tasty, if a bit uninspired. With a bit more funk in the latter, I think this dish could really be a home run.

Made a reservation for two people on a Wednesday evening for their outdoor area. Not overly decorated but a nice atmosphere nonetheless for a quiet dinner. Concise menu of several Italian dishes, as well as a large drink list. Decided on the Hot Chicken Milanese ($28) and an IPA ($9). The chicken is flattened and thinly breaded - not dry, lending well to a bit of lemon juice. The side salad is overly bitter, not helped by the dressing. Had to order dessert as well, getting a slice of the Chocolate Chess Pie ($10). Incredibly rich, cut by a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Great flavor that's not overbearing in sweetness. Service is good and the ambiance outside is welcoming. Nice spot for a slightly upscale dinner.

Wow, I didn't realize Popina had such an insanely amazing backyard!! If you've eaten here, you know their main dining room is a little petite - so when I came last weekend I was not expecting to see a massive backyard with dozens of tables! They've been taking advantage of the backyard ever since the pandemic - and when I came at 8pm on a Friday night it was packed in the best way. I can't really tell you what to order because everything on the menu is awesome, so just order it all. And if you don't finish with the olive oil cake, you're not living.

This was excellent. First visit, we got olives, ham & melon, pimento cheese with rolls and pickles, and carolina gold arancini to start, then got three pastas: paccheri with tomatos/ham/pecorino, fettuccine with squash/pine nuts/mint, and maltagliati with lamb/olives/chilis/greens. We finished with both desserts: their olive oil cake, and chocolate chess pie. We really liked all the apps, particularly the arancini, and would consider getting any of them again. Among the pastas, we weren't that crazy about the fettuccine, but the other two were absolutely outstanding -- perfect summer pastas. Both desserts were great as well -- my wife was in love with the chocolate pie, but I actually preferred the olive oil cake.

So driving home, trying to avoid the nonsense at the tunnel, I head over the Brooklyn Bridge. Traffic is a bit more than usual, so I snake down Adam Street and turn left on Columbia street. I pass Popina, Yelp it and decide, what the heck looks. Ice let's drop in. A small place, six seats at the bar and 20 table seats. Now this is described as a wine bar and the wine list is quite extensive I order the champagne at $25 a Glass. Pinot noir savant l'ouverture nv. Wow! Delicious. For dinner they have a pork chop on the menu. With peaches, chicory and fennel. It's 16 Oz. And it comes quickly. Really quite good, but has a lot of fat. Which I always avoid. So that's a bit disappointing. I'd say 1/2 the chop is fat. Inedible I also order the filone scape butter. And while cutting the bread, a big piece rolls off and boom hits the floor. Oops!!! My bad My waiter, Zack, ever watchful comes right over and asks if I'd like it replaced? Yes please! Ok so far the food is good except for the fat, which I let my waiter know. (He'll let "them" know). Ha He asks how I like the scape butter, it's new, and yes it's great! I order another glass of that delicious champagne! The champagne is more than making up for the fat! What fat!?? Ha ha Well not sure about dessert. No espresso on the menu!. So ok what can you do? Let's give them the benefit of the doubt! 4 stars. On loan..,, btw the big draw to this place is the stunning back yard which I only discover at the end of my meal. Ok so next time Outback!! But... I end the meal with a delicious chocolate chess pie. It's covered in extra virgin olive oil. Really different and scrumptious. Zach has thrown in a glass of

Great outdoor space to hang out in. Came here in the early evening, and it felt like eating on your friend's backyard patio in the best way. The food is also solid, and the pastas are appropriately hearty. Really enjoyed their signature ham hock pappardalle, even if reminded me more of some strange Italian-meets-the-Carolinas fusion. Will be returning!

Came here with a group of friends. First off it's a little hard to get to but once here warm and inviting atmosphere. We started with a variety of cocktails, all of them were very nice. For first course we tried the crispy corona beans, a big hit with everyone. Winter chicories salad, had an excellent anchovy dressing, I would buy a bottle of that. Everyone went nuts for the charred prawns, great flavor and lastly the fish crudo, the sauce was amazing. Second course we had 3 pastas, all delicious, it's hard to choose a favorite between the spaghettini with clams, agnolotti with braised duck leg or bucatini alla gricia. Last course we tried the long island duck, cooked to perfection and excellent sides. Black garlic bavette was also cooked perfectly, we all really enjoyed the sauce and the side potatoes were fantastic. But I think the crowd favorite of the night was the whole branzino fish! We paired our meal with a wonderful red wine the waiter recommended. Then to finish we had cheesecake, rich and moist. The panne cotta was some of the best I've had, it was smooth, creamy and lemony and the currents added a little hit of tart. Great meal experience!

Popina is basically a perfect restaurant, to me - consistently excellent food, hospitality, overall vibes. I've celebrated a friend's birthday and my rehearsal dinner in Popina's lovely private dining space a few doors down and the wonderful experience carried seamlessly for those private events, too. You can't go wrong with any of the pastas; hot chicken, nonnegotiable. My husband mourns the loss of his beloved chocolate chess pie as Popina made chef/menu changes this year - but neither snow nor rain nor heat etc will keep us from dinners here

The tables are not on top of each other and the noise is lively, but manageable. The food came out in a reasonable time, the bread was good. The hostess was disappointing. She acknowledged walk-in parties and later reservations of the same size that came in the door after us, lining up behind us. We had a reservation for 4. We arrived on time. This happened not once, not twice, but four times, the hostess looking past us to talk to people inline behind us or next to us, as if we were invisible. It wasn't until the 5th white couple she attempted to assist told her flat out that we were waiting before them, and the others she helped. I was looking for the owner or manager but thanks to this kind couple, that wasn't needed. Their blunt comments maybe embarrassed the hostess because only then did the hostess look at me rather than past me, and ask "how many..." she was ready to tell us there was no availability when I answered that we were a party of four as she looked around the dining room and gestured as if to say 'no seats'. I added that we had a reservation for 10 minutes ago. She asked my name and checked her tablet, then said "ok" and sat us at the table by the door. Once we were seated and situated, my young daughter looked up from her menu and asked me why was everybody else helped before us? She honestly didn't know. For those not familiar with having these types of conversations, let's just say that they can make even the best tasting pasta and pizza unsavory if you dwell on it. It's bad when a 7 year old notices they were "othered". Your mileage may vary, I'm sure there is more than one hostess working. I don't think I would recommend Barbalu to everybody unless you're getting take out, or you don't mind a "fight" to get service, assuming you insisted on eating here.

To preface, I'm not a big fan of Torrisi (overhyped and too many flavors being mixed), Misi went down the Carbone route and has gone downhill in the past 1-2 years, and Rezdora was really delicious, but they skimp on portions. L'artusi also in my opinion is decent, but doesn't have the wow factor to make me come back. I also tend to lean more toward authentic Italian tastes with less salt and el dente pasta (Alfredo also doesn't exist in Italy...) So, really, Ammazzacafe executed well in regard to portions and being generous. Their sauce with pastas was well seasoned, flavorful, and their pasta perfectly el dente with quality pasta. So far for Italian food, I recommend Don Angie, a Pasta Eater, Piccolo Cucina, a Pasta Bar, Rezdora, Forma Pasta, and Ammazzacaffe. Definitely will return to Ammazzacaffe - there's also a deli/coffee shop/bodega near Frost Street as their sister establishment in East Williamsburg by the way!

This was high up on my search, and with reviews like what they have, we decided to give them a shot. Its very easy to get to with a decent amount of street parking. Seems a bit out of place next to a deli on a residential block. You can kind of miss it if youre not paying attention. We were a party of 6 and had a 5 PM reservation. You have to pass through this dark curtain and go to the middle of the bar where the host will greet you and bring you to your seats. We were seated promptly with no wait. The restaurant is VERY small. So much so that at our table, all I had to do was reach my hand out and I would have been touching the kitchen counter. It does get a little crammed/crowded, but not in an annoying or unbearable kind of way. The vibe is actually really cozy and rustic. Very dim lighting so either whip out the flashlight on your phone or hold up one of the real candles they have on the table to read the menu. The food menu is straightforward and simple. They have an extensive wine list. I love how on the food menu, next to each dish, they tell you the region of Italy that dish gets its roots from. They have lovely dinnerware here. They brought out a foccacia bread for the table with a tomato dipping sauce. Absolutely delicious foccacia. The sauce was a tad too salty for me. I started off with the mocktail Luisa. It was passion fruit, lemon, agave, ginger beer, and mint. It was $10 and very fresh and mouthwatering! For my appetizer I had the Calamari alla griglia. Grilled calamari with guacamole and carasau bread. I've never had grilled calamari before. Only either marinara or fried. I also thought pairing it with guacamole was an interesting twist. I was so pleasantly surprised by this dish. The calamari were perfectly fork tender grilled. The guacamole went well with it. The carasau bread was more like a tortilla chip. They give you a decent amount for $24.95. That app slid down my throat effortlessly! For my entree I had the Maccheroncini alla Norma. Maccheroni with eggplant in tomato sauce with ricotta cheese. The pasta was so fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce reminded me so much of my Calabrian grandmother's. The ricotta made it rich and creamy. Filling as well. So much so that, even though it wasn't a huge portion, I had to take home half of it because I was verging on being stuffed! My mother had the Cotoletta alla milanese. Keep in mind that if you get this chicken cutlet dish that it serves about four people, even though its for 1! HUGE portion. About 4 enormous cutlets that gave my mom 3 days of leftovers! All of the desserts were $12.95. A nice selection to choose from, but I had the classic Tiramisu. They make it here tableside. He made it with such care. Loved watching him put it all together. Let me tell you, that was the BEST Tiramisu that I've EVER had! Wow, just amazing. Very balanced, quality ingredients. The marscapone was so decadent, creamy and fresh. I could have easily taken down 2 of them! I tried some of my mother's chocolate cake. Delicious and decadent. Service throughout our dinner was above and beyond. Attentive, kind, concise and our waiter was such a cutie! Smooth sailing throughout the entire meal. We barely had to wait for anything. Amazing restaurant and staff. For dinner, I ordered the special for the night which was cacio pepe ravioli, while my husband got the tagliatelle verdi con ragu. Both of our pasta dishes felt extremely fresh. The ravioli was unlike anything Ive had before, with flavorful cacio pepe filling and a butter sauce with pancetta complementing the flavor. The tagliatelle was also delicious in a more ragu centric way, still offering a good balance of flavor. Both dishes were pretty filling and so neither of us could finish it. We ended the night with cannolis, which was a pleasant surprise to find 3 came in 1 order. One side is pistachio while the other had a coco dusting. These were again delicious but pretty filling and sweet so we could only eat one. The staff here was also very friendly and service was quick with food coming out much faster than I expected. Overall I would come back and try even more on their menu.

Known as an Italian red sauce shop that served all walks of life, including possibly the mafia, this place has seen it all. If only the walls can talk, I could imagine all the stories it holds. Our friendly waiter has been there for 20+ years and shared some of his experiences and memories. It was a nice bonus to our meal for four. For appetizers, we had some Clams Oreganata (8/10), Fried Calamari (8/10), and Roasted Peppers w/ Anchovies (8/10). I would say that these three starters were the highlights of the meal. The entrees were not bad, just not as outstanding as their appetizer counterparts. My favorite of the bunch was the Eggplant Parmigiana (8/10), which was delicious and well made. The other three items, Pork Chop alla Bamonte's (6/10), Ravioli w/ Meat Sauce (7/10), and Rigatoni w/ Sausage & Broccoli Rabe (7/10), were all decent, but nothing special. By the end of the meal, four of us all agreed that it was a fun experience. With all the great options for Italian cuisine in NYC, it's not somewhere that stands out enough for regular visits. However, I would stop by if I was in the neighborhood.

I think the only way to really express how great the food here is would be to simply say that you…read moreshould try it for yourself. Make a pact with yourself that before you die you experience culinary paradise. Maybe it's laying it on thick for some of you but my dish of veal scarpariello was the best thing I've ever had at any Italian restaurant ever. Nor do I think that is an exaggeration at all. The veal was thin enough and with an equally thin layer of eggplant and mozzarella covering it and emerssed in a white wine sauce I couldn't decide what part was my favorite. I still can't decide but I will say I must go back and try it again. I thought that the dish looked small but I couldn't even finish half of it pan my own even though it was compelling me to devour the entire thing! Truly, don't even think of going without trying that dish for yourself. The staff was some of the most attentive I've ever come across. We had fresh plates and silverware after every course. We didn't need to look for a waiter at all for they were there seeing to our every need. And the patrons all looked like they were enjoying a special night out because this is truly a special place. Great food, great atmosphere and a wonderful night out!
