    Salad primavera
    Mary D.

Okay I'm going to keep it real. I was looking forward to this because the aesthetic and dining experience looks beautiful. Made reservations and was quickly seated. Off top, love the interior decor and bright ambiance. The server welcomed us and offered two cup options and homemade kombucha which was a nice touch. However, the food was mid and over priced, here's what we ordered: - salad primavera $18 - strawberry, pistachio, fontina, rhubarb. It was okay, nothing to rave about. We originally wanted the garlic knot monkey bread but it was not available - girelle lemon $26 - lemon, lemon, capers, basil. disappointed there was no protein for such a high priced pasta dish. Of the two pasta dishes we ordered this was the best - gemelli $28 - Domenico's Sunday sauce & meat cubes. It was okay but not something I'd order again - dessert: Nagami kumquats $14 - cinnamon-almond, moscato zabaglione. This was some kind of pudding, it was weird but looked pretty? - it was my birthday so they served a cute birthday candle on top of a Twinkie look-a-like bread which was thoughtful - tldr; food is mid, slightly overpriced. Exceptional service though and fun colorful dining experience for the gram.

Food was so unique I've never had anything like it anywhere. The service was great and I really enjoyed the ambiance. The welcome drinks were a nice touch. I liked the different types of Negronis they have. The gel olives were really hard to eat I found them so boozy and just too weird. The monkey bread was garlicky and had just enough butter. The mackerel was my favorite dish. The fish with the olives actually worked really well. The lemon pasta was made super well and I loved how much lemon was in it. The beef was sliced so thin and I liked how fatty it was but wasn't too much. The vegetables were fresh and also delicious. The bab yaki dessert was super unique and wasn't too sweet.

One of a Kind Pasta Drove to Gowanus, Brooklyn for a Michelin recommended unusual Italian restaurant. The highlight of the meal for me is the pasta, made by the restaurant in a unique shape they called "wave". The pasta was prepared firm, and paired with a heavily herbed calabrian chili-based sauce that was deliciously scooped within the grooves of the wavy pasta shell. The sauce was so delicious I took a spoon and cleaned out the plate after the pasta was gone. The interior design was a labor of love among friends and collaborators, where every single item from ceramics, barware, paintings, graffitis, furniture to interior design was designed specifically for the space. Easily made a reservation for 4 people a few weeks ahead. Very fun spot, though it was definitely hit or miss. I tried: + Sonic Rickey cocktail + Garlic knot monkey bread + Parmesan-cured fluke crudo + Chicken liver mousse + Grilled octopus + Triangle penne + Girelle + Smoked pork ribs parm + Olive marble cake The hits: monkey bread, octopus and girelle were all excellent. I also really enjoyed the Sonic cocktail, which tasted like blue raspberry. The misses: the smoked pork ribs parm was wayyy too salty, and the olive marble cake was super dry. If you're looking for "fun" Italian, I do think the food is better at Bad Roman, though the prices are more reasonable here. Prob won't return, but glad I gave it a shot.

A culinary incubator & the most fun, quirky, cool & ingenious dining experiences. Caffe Mars with its futuristic Jetson like design & modern colored booths. Silverware is in a draw attached to the table. I love this so much as I'm usually hunting waitstaff for a spoon.. You are offered complementary Prosecco or fizzy apple non alcoholic drink. Fab The garlic monkey bread is a must- really garlicky and my opinion better than the Bad Roman babka. Ate: Lots of lettuces ricotta Salata on the side Pasta special Bluefish Marble cake Strawberries & zabaglione Total: $113 before tip The basil pasta with zucchini flowers was delicious & bluefish generous & tasty. I loved that the marble cake with amaro cherries wasn't too sweet but although the zabaglione was scrumptious not sure how they prepared the fresh strawberries for the zabaglione . Candy is offered at the end and this is fun!!!!

Really great concept but kind of misses the mark. Overall really nice and helpful staff especially the guy at the bar but otherwise the food was mediocre and overpriced for the tiny portions. I made a reservation for 2 and a friend asked to join so I tried to call to see if I can make it for 3 people but no one picks up the number listed on the website. I called maybe 10 times in a 3 hour span... nothing. We sat at the bar and for 3 people I strongly recommend not doing this because it was very difficult to have a conversation. We order 2 different drinks, my friend hated hers and I thought my mine was way too sweet. We ordered the music crackers and the amount of food we received was almost laughable. 4 crackers in total but not enough mousse to accommodate them all. We ordered the garlic knot monkey bread which was good but very small and fairly dry. We ordered the bucatini which was fairly portioned but can only be described as lemon flavored dry pasta. The waves pasta was good but came out cold, and a tiny portion, not worth $27. The baked potato gnocchi was my favorite dish of the night but also tiny for the $26 price point. It's a really fun vibe but was almost difficult to find things we all agreed on and still left pretty hungry. Wouldn't recommend and wouldn't come back.

Easily one of the most fun and best new restaurants of the year, the new spot self-described as an "unusual Italian restaurant" is exactly that, and a must try. The decor, people and food are all fun, but more importantly, everything is delicious. Start with the Garlic Knot Monkey Bread, and definitely get the amazing pastas (if for no other reason also then to see them bring out the giant 3 foot long pepper mill). Don't miss the Smoked Ribs Parm too, a show-stopper of an entree.

My foodie friend and I have been on a kick trying out fun new restaunts in NYC and have been trying to find a time to get to Cafe Mars. At last out wait was over when we were able to snag 2 bar-side seats last Sunday evening. Hours say they are open until 6:30PM, but that is the last seating, they are open a little later FYI. We tried a bunch of different cocktails (all delicious) and shared many dishes. Cocktails: Ruby Bloom, Little Dragon, Isola Bella, Tramonto Di Tramonti, The Domenico. Food: Monkey Bread, Cucumbers, Octopus, Gnocci, Pancake Primavera Dessert: Olive Oil Cake, Strawberries Our favorite dish hands down was the pancake primavera aka veggie pancake. It was so fresh, flavorful and unique. The drizzle of vibrant yellow green garlic chive sauce and the drizzle of orange carrot sauce along with all the veggie textures was incredible. It almost had a slight sweetness like a real pancake but was super savory. I couldn't believe how filling this veggie dish was. We also really like the gnocci, octopus, cucumbers and the monkey bread. Everything was delicious and easy to share. Great service, amazing company and great eats. I would recommend making a reservation if you want a table. Awesome place!

i give this place a 2.5/5 stars. i'm surprised at how highly rated this spot is. cafe mars is all over social right now, known for its funky interior and avant-garde dishes. while the vibe is cute, i found the restaurant to be quite kitschy. when you step in, first, the a/c was not working. it was 90+ on a summer night and they just had fans blowing. the boys we were with were sweaatin by the end of the meal. the interior is bright with booths and seats by the bar. you're taken to your seat and greeted with a choice of glasses for a complimentary drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic available). i went with a group of 4 ppl and we started with the jello-olives, pizza anchovies. garlic knot monkey bread, lots of lettuce and the grilled octopus, then got the girelle, waves, triangle penne and smoked ribs. we didn't leave hungry but we definitely not full. we tried to order some more dishes but they closed the kitchen without telling us which was a bit strange/annoying. every dish really is a conversation starter but i wouldn't say the food was so good i'd come back. of the appetizers, the lots of lettuce and monkey bread were good - not great. pizza anchovies legit tasted like just anchovies out of a can. our favorite was the waves and girelle pastas, again funky, but was it really amazing? no. the pork ribs were fine as well. we ended with the olive marble cake which again was fine. drinks were good but they kept forgetting our order. all in all, cafe mars was fun and fine but i would not come back here.

Fantastic! Super creative menu with unexpected combinations that make you wonder why it was the first time you had them together (octopus, celery, roni cups and ranch). Service was attentive and welcoming without being overbearing. The playlist was top notch as well! Can't wait to come back

When it comes to Italian food, you will generally find me at old-school mainstays like Gene's or Isle of Capri--but the New Yorker review of Café Mars persuaded me to check out this calculatingly quirky place in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. First of all, the restaurant is on an avenue that still has a working-class old-school Brooklyn culture--so the upscale neon brightness of Café Mars makes it seem like an haut-bourgeois spaceship has landed on this quiet strip, unleashing an invasion of hipster aliens. To temper this, co-owner Paul D'Avino asserts a narrative about his great-grandfather from Campania having once lived across the street--"a happy coincidence" discovered after he chose the restaurant's location. I give the vibe an A-, for the Memphis Milano-inspired decor (pink squiggly legged chairs at the bar, tables in the back room shaped like puzzle pieces so they can be fitted together for large parties) and the music (every single song, from "Dirty Back Road" by the B-52s to "Bull in the Heather" by Sonic Youth, seemed ransacked from my personal iTunes queue). My friend and I were seated in the back room, which lacks the bright neon WOWness of the main dining area. The noise level is high--too high. I started with the house Gibson garnished with a pickled red onion (pretty much perfect) and my friend and I shared the restaurant's de rigueur starter: Castelvetrano olives suspended in square Negroni jello shots. Yes, they were as gimmicky as they sound, but strangely satisfying, even if the flavor of the Campari overwhelmed everything. (I was encouraged by the waitress to pick one up with my hand and "pop it in my mouth like a regular jello shot." I informed her that "popping jello shots" was the sort of barroom antic I have fortunately never participated in, and opted for a spoon.) We ordered three pasta dishes to share, each with unusually shaped pasta that is made in-house. Even though the food was obviously tailored toward the TikTok/Instagram crowd, I'm willing to accept that the inventive pasta shapes were more in the spirit of Dadaist humor and also Futurism, the early 20th-century Italian art and political movement that even had its own cookbook. The "waves" pasta dish was our favorite (even if it could have arrived at the table a bit warmer). It was tossed with large shrimps and an intense Calabrian chili sauce. The green "vesuvio" pasta were shaped like nipples on a baby bottle, or a human, and had a sensual feel in the mouth. The pea-shoot pesto was subtle but also bright and fresh. The humorously triangular penne ("trenne"), another trick for your mouth, were dressed with an onion and beef cheeks gravy (they don't bother calling it what it is: Genovese La Napoletana) and grated pecorino. It was delicious (but again, not warm enough) but would have been better if there was more sauce, like a Genovese dish I enjoyed in Naples last fall. Like all trendy joints in NYC, our table came with a time limit--90 minutes--a rule that infuriates me to no end. The unasked-for check arrived with a thud, along with a glass chalice filled with hard candies, which was swiftly removed to remind us of the proverbial alarm clock that had gone off. (See my review of Tarallucci e Vino, a NYC restaurant that understands the European tradition of allowing diners to linger.) Finally, if you want to truly understand how out of place Café Mars is on this stretch of Gowanus, you must immediately proceed to Canal Bar next door--a gruff, salty dive that resembles the biker bar from "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." They won't pressure you to leave if you linger and the tattooed denizens will surely put up a good fight once the Martian invasion advances in earnest.

The tables are not on top of each other and the noise is lively, but manageable. The food came out in a reasonable time, the bread was good. The hostess was disappointing. She acknowledged walk-in parties and later reservations of the same size that came in the door after us, lining up behind us. We had a reservation for 4. We arrived on time. This happened not once, not twice, but four times, the hostess looking past us to talk to people inline behind us or next to us, as if we were invisible. It wasn't until the 5th white couple she attempted to assist told her flat out that we were waiting before them, and the others she helped. I was looking for the owner or manager but thanks to this kind couple, that wasn't needed. Their blunt comments maybe embarrassed the hostess because only then did the hostess look at me rather than past me, and ask "how many..." she was ready to tell us there was no availability when I answered that we were a party of four as she looked around the dining room and gestured as if to say 'no seats'. I added that we had a reservation for 10 minutes ago. She asked my name and checked her tablet, then said "ok" and sat us at the table by the door. Once we were seated and situated, my young daughter looked up from her menu and asked me why was everybody else helped before us? She honestly didn't know. For those not familiar with having these types of conversations, let's just say that they can make even the best tasting pasta and pizza unsavory if you dwell on it. It's bad when a 7 year old notices they were "othered". Your mileage may vary, I'm sure there is more than one hostess working. I don't think I would recommend Barbalu to everybody unless you're getting take out, or you don't mind a "fight" to get service, assuming you insisted on eating here.

To preface, I'm not a big fan of Torrisi (overhyped and too many flavors being mixed), Misi went down the Carbone route and has gone downhill in the past 1-2 years, and Rezdora was really delicious, but they skimp on portions. L'artusi also in my opinion is decent, but doesn't have the wow factor to make me come back. I also tend to lean more toward authentic Italian tastes with less salt and el dente pasta (Alfredo also doesn't exist in Italy...) So, really, Ammazzacafe executed well in regard to portions and being generous. Their sauce with pastas was well seasoned, flavorful, and their pasta perfectly el dente with quality pasta. So far for Italian food, I recommend Don Angie, a Pasta Eater, Piccolo Cucina, a Pasta Bar, Rezdora, Forma Pasta, and Ammazzacaffe. This was high up on my search, and with reviews like what they have, we decided to give them a shot. Its very easy to get to with a decent amount of street parking. Seems a bit out of place next to a deli on a residential block. You can kind of miss it if youre not paying attention. We were a party of 6 and had a 5 PM reservation. You have to pass through this dark curtain and go to the middle of the bar where the host will greet you and bring you to your seats. We were seated promptly with no wait. The restaurant is VERY small. So much so that at our table, all I had to do was reach my hand out and I would have been touching the kitchen counter. It does get a little crammed/crowded, but not in an annoying or unbearable kind of way. The vibe is actually really cozy and rustic. Very dim lighting so either whip out the flashlight on your phone or hold up one of the real candles they have on the table to read the menu. The food menu is straightforward and simple. They have an extensive wine list. I love how on the food menu, next to each dish, they tell you the region of Italy that dish gets its roots from. They have lovely dinnerware here. They brought out a foccacia bread for the table with a tomato dipping sauce. Absolutely delicious foccacia. The sauce was a tad too salty for me. I started off with the mocktail Luisa. It was passion fruit, lemon, agave, ginger beer, and mint. It was $10 and very fresh and mouthwatering! For my appetizer I had the Calamari alla griglia. Grilled calamari with guacamole and carasau bread. I've never had grilled calamari before. Only either marinara or fried. I also thought pairing it with guacamole was an interesting twist. I was so pleasantly surprised by this dish. The calamari were perfectly fork tender grilled. The guacamole went well with it. The carasau bread was more like a tortilla chip. They give you a decent amount for $24.95. That app slid down my throat effortlessly! For my entree I had the Maccheroncini alla Norma. Maccheroni with eggplant in tomato sauce with ricotta cheese. The pasta was so fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce reminded me so much of my Calabrian grandmother's. The ricotta made it rich and creamy. Filling as well. So much so that, even though it wasn't a huge portion, I had to take home half of it because I was verging on being stuffed! My mother had the Cotoletta alla milanese. Keep in mind that if you get this chicken cutlet dish that it serves about four people, even though its for 1! HUGE portion. About 4 enormous cutlets that gave my mom 3 days of leftovers! All of the desserts were $12.95. A nice selection to choose from, but I had the classic Tiramisu. They make it here tableside. He made it with such care. Loved watching him put it all together. Let me tell you, that was the BEST Tiramisu that I've EVER had! Wow, just amazing. Very balanced, quality ingredients. The marscapone was so decadent, creamy and fresh. I could have easily taken down 2 of them! I tried some of my mother's chocolate cake. Delicious and decadent. Service throughout our dinner was above and beyond. Attentive, kind, concise and our waiter was such a cutie! Smooth sailing throughout the entire meal. We barely had to wait for anything. Amazing restaurant and staff. For dinner, I ordered the special for the night which was cacio pepe ravioli, while my husband got the tagliatelle verdi con ragu. Both of our pasta dishes felt extremely fresh. The ravioli was unlike anything Ive had before, with flavorful cacio pepe filling and a butter sauce with pancetta complementing the flavor. The tagliatelle was also delicious in a more ragu centric way, still offering a good balance of flavor. Both dishes were pretty filling and so neither of us could finish it. We ended the night with cannolis, which was a pleasant surprise to find 3 came in 1 order. One side is pistachio while the other had a coco dusting. These were again delicious but pretty filling and sweet so we could only eat one. The staff here was also very friendly and service was quick with food coming out much faster than I expected. Overall I would come back and try even more on their menu.

The service was great, our server was very attentive and made great recommendations. I loved their mocktails! I loved the Rosie and I don't recall the name of the second one but they were great! Our entrees were nice and filling. I appreciate that the ravioli wasn't just 4 pieces like it is at other restaurants. Dessert - the affogato was delish! I loved the crunch in the ice cream. It was my first time trying affogato so I don't have anything to compare it to but I enjoyed it. The restaurant itself was busy but they have an outdoor section (nice and warm) and while they had like two or three small tables available when we got there, by the time we left they were all busy. I'd recommend Evelina's!

Michael's - I love ordering the mushroom dish.

We had the best night at Michael's!…read more I knew Michaels was an iconic restaurant deep in Brooklyn. I've seen their sauce sold in stores before, and we finally made the trip out for dinner. We went around Christmas and it was decorated inside. The restaurant was packed. Every single table was full. Everyone was having the best time. Even the bar was totally full of people ordering drinks before they were seated. The food is classic, New York Italian. Everything is a very well done version. The veal Parm was one of the best I've ever had. The caramel cake at the end was truly beyond. I can't recommend this experience enough. We ate for three hours had amazing cocktails, great bottles of wine and a really delicious meal. Looking around, you could tell the diners were locals enjoying a beloved neighborhood restaurant. It's such a special restaurant that serves real New Yorkers.

The interior looks like a classic Italian restaurant and service is very formal. It was quite busy for a weekday night. There's valet parking so you don't have to stress about finding street parking nearby. We ordered fried calamari, baked clams, baked vodka penne, and the Fisherman's Platter. We were served bread and some antipasto to start. The calamari was a classic and I loved the sauce -- it had a good spicy kick to it. The baked clams were okay. The Fisherman's Platter is a must and good value with its generous portion of seafood. It can definitely be shared amongst two people. The baked vodka penne was also good but portion was on the smaller side. I would say Michael's is a must try at least once.

Cuisine: 7 Service: 8…read moreDecor: 8 Value: 7 Overall: 7 I wonder how many 100 year old restaurants are still left in NYC. It can't be easy to stay true to who you are in this ever changing world. With today's social media heavy and influencer dominated marketing, this restaurant sits on a quiet street in Brooklyn just going about its business. Known as an Italian red sauce shop that served all walks of life, including possibly the mafia, this place has seen it all. If only the walls can talk, I could imagine all the stories it holds. Our friendly waiter has been there for 20+ years and shared some of his experiences and memories. It was a nice bonus to our meal for four. For appetizers, we had some Clams Oreganata (8/10), Fried Calamari (8/10), and Roasted Peppers w/ Anchovies (8/10). I would say that these three starters were the highlights of the meal. The entrees were not bad, just not as outstanding as their appetizer counterparts. My favorite of the bunch was the Eggplant Parmigiana (8/10), which was delicious and well made. The other three items, Pork Chop alla Bamonte's (6/10), Ravioli w/ Meat Sauce (7/10), and Rigatoni w/ Sausage & Broccoli Rabe (7/10), were all decent, but nothing special. By the end of the meal, four of us all agreed that it was a fun experience. With all the great options for Italian cuisine in NYC, it's not somewhere that stands out enough for regular visits. However, I would stop by if I was in the neighborhood.

Make a pact with yourself that before you die you experience culinary paradise. Maybe it's laying it on thick for some of you but my dish of veal scarpariello was the best thing I've ever had at any Italian restaurant ever. Nor do I think that is an exaggeration at all. The veal was thin enough and with an equally thin layer of eggplant and mozzarella covering it and emerssed in a white wine sauce I couldn't decide what part was my favorite. I still can't decide but I will say I must go back and try it again. I thought that the dish looked small but I couldn't even finish half of it pan my own even though it was compelling me to devour the entire thing! Truly, don't even think of going without trying that dish for yourself. The staff was some of the most attentive I've ever come across. We had fresh plates and silverware after every course. We didn't need to look for a waiter at all for they were there seeing to our every need. And the patrons all looked like they were enjoying a special night out because this is truly a special place. Great food, great atmosphere and a wonderful night out!
