The restaurant is very big and thankfully it wasn't too crowded. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I purchased two plates to go, one for me and one for my mom. I bought the fried chicken meal with Mac and cheese and collard greens. I purchased my mom the whiting fish meal with potato salad and collard greens. We both enjoyed our meals and they both came cornbread of course. My favorite was the chicken and collard greens. Prices were fairand reasonable. Was nearby, heard some pretty good things about this place, and can never pass up fried chicken so my friend and I stopped in to grab a bite to go! He got the fried catfish, I got the fried chicken and we each split it so we could have a lil taste of everything. I also got mac and cheese, candied yams, and some cornbread. Overall, it's good, classic Southern Fried Chicken and Fried Catfish. Seasoned well, crispy, and juicy. The mac and cheese was pretty good and so were the candied yams. I believe this place has changed ownership. The fried chicken is dry and tasteless not as savory as it was in the past. The quality of the food is different, definitely not southern. In addition the cafeteria style of service is deficient. The attitude of the workers behind the counter is stressed and frustrated as they are short staffed and depending the few leaving a Kiosk to take orders. The food here was so delicious, honestly worth the very long trek from the city. We ordered ribs, turkey, candied yams, and collard greens. Their cornbread was very legit with a good crust. The ordering was a bit confusing as they have a digital screen, which says they do takeout, so we weren't sure if it was a takeout only screen. We used it and turns out it wasn't, which was good. You can also order at the cashier but they seem to take orders pretty slowly. The food honestly takes a long time to come out but they are very busy. Out of everything we ordered my favorite was definitely the oxtail. It's a bit on the pricey side ($29.99 for about four pieces) but the flavor is great. Their fried chicken was also very tender and tasty. The ribs were okay...Maybe because it was July 4, the meat was a little too chewy for my taste and I wish they were more of the fall-off-the-bone type. The only critique was that we wish the fried chicken came with condiments for the kids. Everything was well seasoned. We ordered catfish, baked chicken, fried chicken which were all 10/10. I was skeptical about the mac n cheese from some other users reviews but I'm happy to say that it's amazing. Not to mention kid approved. The yams tasted healthy and not overly sweet as I experience at many other soul food restaurants. I'd go on and on about each dish but by now I think you get the point. This place is a must try. My only critique is that the food orders were plated incorrectly. Whoever set up the plates just threw various combinations together so my family had to figure it out. Reviews were mixed on the peach cobbler. Kind of wished there was more of a crust. The sweet tea and uptown drinks were also delicious.
