While visiting Brooklyn and spending the afternoon at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, we were looking for a nearby restaurant and were so glad we discovered Cheryl's Global Soul. From the outside, it's easy to underestimate what awaits inside. I probably would have walked right past it had we not decided to stop in. The moment I stepped through the door, I was immediately impressed by the beautiful artwork, warm décor, and inviting atmosphere. It truly feels like one of Brooklyn's neighborhood gems. The restaurant offers several seating options, including indoor dining, an outdoor patio, and a beautifully landscaped terrace tucked beneath mature trees. We chose the back terrace, and it turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the experience. With two levels and plenty of natural shade, it felt like a peaceful escape from the city while still being full of energy. Our server was friendly, attentive, and happy to answer our questions about the menu, making it easy to decide what to order. We all decided to try one of Cheryl's signature bowls and ordered the Herb Grilled Chicken Bowl, Coconut Curry Wings Bowl, and Moroccan-Spiced Vegetable Tagine Bowl. Every dish was flavorful, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared. The portions were generous enough that none of us finished our meals, which meant we had an equally delicious lunch waiting for us the next day. The food (as well as my company), was enjoyable. The home fries were very tasty so much so I took an order to go for my mom because she loved potatoes. Sage recommended ginger tea, which was delicious. Sage was also very attentive to our needs and I appreciated the warm syrup that was paired with my warm pancake pancakes. (It's a pet peeve of mine when restaurants serve hot pancakes with cold butter and cold syrup, so I appreciated it the extra effort.) The staff are very friendly and attentive. Cheryl's is an absolute favorite and I hope to make it there one day for dinner as I've only gone for brunch. read more

It was only two people working there and I think both of them were waiters, hostess and cooks. Recently visited for dinner. Was told they had a very busy brunch service and things were moving a bit slow starting dinner. Was OK with that. We ordered drinks and talked. During our wait, our server told us they ran out of mac and cheese. Shortly after, we see servers with meals for people who arrived after us with mac and cheese on them. After an hour with no food in sight, I told our server we wanted the check. The server brought the check with the food items we didn't receive. I told her we would only pay for the drinks. The Manager, a nice man named Sage overheard and comped the drinks and apologized. I again offered to pay for the drinks but Sage insisted and apologized again which I appreciated. The last time at Cheryl's I said I would not return. That time, 2 years ago, they were out of everything I ordered. We went because Cheryl's is facing closure. I had doubts about returning but my husband wanted to be supportive. Now he won't return. This is really unfortunate because the food is good, the prices are fair and the space is nice. As good as the last time I've been here! The host is also the sweetest man ever! This is how I want to be greeted at every establishment. Food was amazing. I personally always go for the chicken and pancakes but their pancakes with cream and berries are also amazing! My bf got the breakfast platter and the eggs & bacon were cooked to perfection. They also have a variety of cocktails to choose from. We came on a Sunday a little after 10am (when they open) and had no problem getting a table but it started filling up during our meal. I have been to the restaurant a few times. I have been for brunch, lunch and dinner. The food is always great and delicious, albeit a little pricey. However, the staff leaves a lot to be desired, depending on who you get. The one lady is always rude and takes name down for brunch but then calls people in random order. I also do not like that they charge extra for credit cards and they put an automatic 20% tip. The most recent trip, I wanted to order creole BBQ shrimp but they had removed it from the dinner menu. However, they made a custom coconut shrimp with tamarind sauce and it was really good. It was around $28. My friend ordered the fried catfish ($28) and loved it. The mac and cheese and fish was done well and worked together. I got the bread pudding ($14) and thought it was okay. It was tasty but to me it needed something else. It wasn't very sweet and it was big enough to share. In my opinion, their fried chicken is the best, and I wish they would offer it all day. Some friends and I met for brunch on a cold Sunday afternoon. You are served on a first come basis. We waited around 30 minutes for a table. The staff were very cool and friendly. A few of my friends had frequented this spot a few times before but this was my first time. The table ordered pancakes with chicken. Me and my friend had the fried chicken sandwich with French fries. Another friend had the fish. We also ordered the salmon hash that definitely stood out from all the food. We all enjoyed our meals and the overall vibe of the place. Celebrated my 44th bday here yesterday and had a really good time. The staff was SUPURB! The shots, drinks and food was really good. Food felt like a home cooked meal. I had the French toast with caramelized apples and scrambled eggs w/cheddar. The one thing I would recommend is better heat in the restaurant. I had been wanting to visit this spot for a while to support a black owned business but unfortunately, this would likely be my first and last visit. I came for brunch with a large group and we were seated fairly quickly, which I appreciated. The place was full and the vibe was good. However, things got confusing early on. We were different brunch menus. One included soups and salads, and the other didn't. I asked the waitress about ordering a salad, and she let me know that I had the wrong menu and that salads weren't part of the brunch menu. That said, she still took my salad order with a side of roasted salmon hash. When my food came out it was underwhelming. The salad was okay, just a basic mix of greens, and the salmon hash was okay, but tasted like it was missing something. The biggest issue came with the payment process. Prior to ordering, we were told they only accept three cards per group and cash, which was fine. However, when I went to pay with Discover, I was told they don't accept that card. This is one of those restaurants that I've sworn to try for YEARS but kept putting it off. Yesterday, I was in the area and decided to finally give it a try and I'm glad I did. I got the iced gingerade and the special burger. The gingerade is so refreshing. It's made with ginger, lime, and I believe brown sugar. It hurts my heart to leave this review but I was just reviewing my receipt for reimbursement after a work breakfast (only 2 people) and we that gratuity was included in my total (with no notice) and so when I added gratuity to what I thought was the total, I effectively tipped 3x the 20% that had already been added. I always tip, and choose to tip generously, so this deceptive practice feels maliciously. I came here for brunch on a random Saturday around 2:30 pm - right when the kitchen was closing. Thankfully we were able to put in an order, a couple came in after us were told that it was too late. My friend and I ordered almost everything on the menu. Chicken and pancakes. Eggs. French toast. A burger with fries. The chicken - I prefer chicken on the bone but they gave me chicken tenders which were delicious and juicy. The pancakes were so fluffy and cooked perfectly. Loved the pancakes and they reminded me of Japanese pancakes. I wish they gave more than two pancakes. The French toast were good - not the best French toast I've ever had but still good. I've had this spot on my list for a while. Initially I got there & was waiting outside the door because there was no hostess and looked like the ppl by the door were waiting for a table. It was a short wait, the host came out & he was cool writing names on a list. I opted to sit outside bc I didn't want to wait for a table inside and it wasn't that hot. The waitress brings water and asks what I want to drink and gives a lil run down on what they have even tho I legit just sat down and got comfortable. My drink comes out and it was a mango margarita guess they ran out of puree or whatever the drink had a cloudy look to it wasn't quite orange but it was ok. My food comes out I had the egg platter w/ a side of pancakes. I just have one dish the waitress puts the plate down and rushes off. I spent the next approx 10 mins waiting for anyone to come outside to inform about my missing pancakes. I inform about the pancakes and then spend like 20 mins waiting for them to come out. At this point I'm finished with the egg platter... I was tryna eat slow waiting for the pancakes but I mean it was 3 eggs, one piece of bread cut in half, one chicken sausage cut in half and about 10 lil potatoes for almost $20 is crazy. The waitress asks if I would like another drink so I'm like okay I'll order a mimosa. The pancakes come out and they are small with 5 butter packets, it's just two lil pancakes and the waitress forgets the syrup and no mimosa. I spend another 5 -10 mins WAITING to inform them that I have no syrup. They bring the syrup AND STILL NO MIMOSA!! then asks me oh what was your drink again & im like forget the drink, no thank you. I am ready to go! The pancakes were okay didn't think they were that flavorful but fluffy. Now the check was bought out quickly when it was asked for (LOL). I have cash on hand so the total is $47 and some change, & I put down a $100 bill. The host happened to be nearby and was like I can take this for you and would you like change? And I'm caught off guard by the question, you don't know my total because you didn't look at the bill that's under the money , u see a $100 bill and asking if want change & I'm a party of one... u think I sat here and ordered $100 worth of anything with this terrible service??? yes I do want change, ANYWAYS, you already know what happened.... I spent about 15 minutes WAITING for the $53 in change they said the bartender was backed up so I had to wait. What a waste of time I could have went home and whipped up a better more fulfilling breakfast for way less than that. Maybe I'll try lunch or dinner and see if I have a better experience. read more

As I sipped my coffee, Harry Belafonte calypso was playing in the dining room. When the server placed my jerk pork, he mentioned the accompanying bottled contained hot sauce. I came here for lunch in the middle of the week. I walked from the library (~4 min walk) and it was decently busy but we were still able to get a table quickly. The menus are your typical laminated menus but you get to mark what you like on a separate sheet. They provide a sharpie to write on that page. The food itself was delicious, I got the roasted potatoes with a side of eggs and toast with butter. The eggs were fluffy and light which I loved. The potatoes were good too but I prefer mine slightly more crispy on the edges, these were a bit softer. But today I noticed that they automatically added gratuity (even though I was eating by myself!) and then they still listed additional "suggested gratuity" amounts. I told the server (manager?) that this was deceptive and he said "it's just the system." Ok, well your system is trying to trick people into paying double tip. I see from other reviews that others have complained about this, so the restaurant clearly just doesn't care. I'd love to come back if this is ever fixed. read more
