Gentrified Caribbean Food! I've passed this restaurant so many times that I was basically in a situationship with it, so I finally stopped by on a late Sunday. The place is super clean and cute--definitely date-night approved. The drinks were delicious, so I was already feeling optimistic. The menu had so many good-sounding options that I was ready for a whole Caribbean moment. I ordered the jerk pork, and he got the Soca pasta with shrimp. Now... the "jerk pork." It wasn't giving jerk. It was giving "sliced pork loin with a smoky BBQ sauce that once saw a picture of jerk seasoning." Tender? Yes. Authentic? Not even a little. The rice also said, "I'm inspired by the Caribbean, but I don't actually go there." I tried the Soca pasta and it was basically pasta in a cream sauce--good, but not out here trying to win awards. Really really not good unfortunately. Very little about this place is Caribbean. Food was clearly reheated and atmosphere was pretty bad. DJ playing sad kinda corny RnB on Sunday brunch (and I love RnB!!) The server was disinterested and quite rude to be honest. I'm not someone that leaves bad reviews or complains in restaurants unless something is really not right but her attitude sucked and we decided to pay and leave without finishing our food. The wings were fried crispy great texture the flavor didn't really come thru.. The jerk pork wasn't authentic tasting however the rice it came with was good. Met a few friends here for dinner. Restaurant is cute with good music playing but not loud. While we waited for everyone to arrive we hung out at the bar and had a margarita and a couple appetizers. Once everyone was there we went to a table. To our surprise they were participating in restaurant week, $45 for app, entree and dessert. So we all did that. Everything I got was good. That island shrimp is a delicious. For my entree I got the salmon, really good. Then the coconut creme brulee for dessert so yummy. The food here is amazing! I ate everything (which I don't do often. lol) Went for brunch and ordered off the prefix menu, which included a drink, appetizer, entree and desert. I got the birria empanada and it was delicious! The fried chicken and biscuits was a little tricky to eat because it didn't come as a sandwich, so I ate them with a knife and fork. Both were really good, though. I'd read the reviews before coming and the lychee martini seemed to be their go to drink. I tried it and it didn't disappoint. So good. The service was prompt. The food was good but wasn't quite what we expected. We had the Mac and Cheese and crab cakes as appetizers. We really liked the crab cakes but we expected the Mac and Cheese to be baked instead of being saucy. Wasn't bad though. I had the BBQ Jerk Chicken as my main and my partner had the lamb. The Jerk chicken was well done and the flavors were balanced but it felt like it was missing something compared to the Caribbean food I'm used to. My partner wasn't a big fan of the lamb. A lot of places sell Carib food, but this place got it right! I came in September and they had a great appetizer and drink deal. I got the sangria and wings - sangria delicious and wings were so fulfilling I didn't want to eat it all before my main course. Im not a lover of breaded food, but the shrimp were delicious, big and juicy too. The jerk pork entree was very moist, not spicy and still tasty. I would say that it didn't taste like the grilled, spicy jerk pork that I'm used to, but it was still good. Despite having a busy night for a Wednesday with a large party, the food came out at a decent pace. It seems like there was only one waiter/host and one bartender and probably had a few people in the kitchen. It did take a little while for our food to come out. The place looks clean and bright. My friend took me to Cross Road for my birthday brunch, and sadly, the experience missed the mark. We were the only two guests in the restaurant, yet the service felt disengaged from the moment we walked in. The server seemed uninterested and slow to assist--my friend simply asked for a hardcopy menu, and she appeared reluctant to provide one. I didn't see anything appealing on the brunch menu and preferred to order from the dinner menu. My friend mentioned she'd been able to do so on a previous visit, but this time the server flatly declined without explanation. Her lack of attentiveness set the tone--so much so that we only ordered one drink before deciding to leave. My friend even had to walk over to give her the check because she was sitting in the corner on her phone throughout our visit. I value good service, ambiance, and food--especially from a place that isn't in a high-traffic location. First impressions matter, and unfortunately, this one makes me hesitant to return. Nothing hurts a business faster than poor service. If there were 6 stars, I would give this restaurant that. This was one of the BEST Caribbean dining experiences I've have in NYC for a very long time. Many Caribbean restaurants think they are providing experiences and they are not. Cross road was a 10 from start to finish. I get its a bar and restaurant but I never understood dining and not being able to have a conversation and not scream. The service was amazing. My drink was amazing.(the millionaire) It had just the right amount of bourbon and was mixed perfectly. I ordered the bbq jerk chicken to play it safe and I was so pleased. The rice was soooooo good. I was so happy to have rice that tasted as good as it looked. Sometimes, restaurants layer the food on rice and then the rice has no taste. This rice could of stood alone to be honest. Lol. The bbq jerk chicken was perfect. Manners had me not pick up the bones. We also had the churrasco steak as well and I didn't care for steak that night but the bite I had was good. The churrasco sauce was SO GOOD. The Peach Paradise dessert was okay. I was expecting more sweet like peach cobbler but it was a very subtle taste of sweet. It was made to order so really fresh and the cake consistency was nice and fluffy. I just needed a little more sugar or did i? Lol The presentation of the food was very well done. Brunch here was fantastic! My husband regularly sports a "Lord of the Wings" shirt and considers himself a connoisseur of neighborhood fried chicken. He said the chicken from chicken and waffles is hands down the best - juicy, tender chicken thigh, well seasoned, and crispy without being heavy. My daughter agrees. Seafood brunch options were great. The crab cake, like the chicken, was perfectly crisp on the outside and mostly crab meat on the inside. Shrimp and grits was perfection. There are multiple juices (hello guava!) for those not having alcohol and the drinks were well crafted. This spot requires many hanging out on Courtelyou road to cross the street from hang outs like Taylor and Co books or Brooklyn Artery but it's well worth it. There was a private party in the very Instagramable back garden but lots of families and couples in the front and the menu is palate pleasing for both picky and adventurous eaters. I decided to give this place a few tries before a review. Having visited exactly six times now, I'm prepared. Pros: Cute and clean establishment, including the bathrooms; well executed cocktails; GREAT happy hour; and very friendly clientele. Cons: No-one here has personality; service is efficient but perfunctory; food, while presented well, does not bowl you over; and lack of understanding regarding what an authentic Caribbean welcoming vibe should be. I want them to make, but it's almost like no-one working there wants them to make it. I know the service industry is not what it once was, but the fact that I've been there six times, and I know not one person's name, without looking at my check, is indicative of a "I'm not getting to know you" vibe. I've brought several people here, and they, too, were not impressed. I've never let on to my disappointment, because it's near my home, and I'd like to have another place to gather when friends visit my nabe. I wanted this to be a new fave, but... I'll go back for brunch, which I've yet to try, and I'm hoping it will be a lively affair. Recommendations: Hire people who at least appear to like the clientele; braise/sauce the lamb shank more to mitigate gaminess; get rid of batter on wings (just takes away from the fleshiness of the meat and clashes with the sauces); keep the salmon (yum!); push the curry mussels (yum!); jazz up the pasta; and dim the lights!
