Yesterday my friend and I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. I had the salmon entree and she had the jerk chicken. The sides that went with both entrees complimented the protein and everything was DELICIOUS!!!! The carrot cake was yum!!!! The ambiance and service was perfect. I've driven past Bellyful so many times and didn't even know it was only 10 mins from me. I made reservations online, but when I arrived the male hostess couldn't seem to find my reservations or keep focused to find my name "Trina" in his hand held tablet. That was fine, but when we entered I asked for a booth and he said it was only for 4 people, and the place was empty so I didn't understand why it would be a chore to seat us there. I asked if it was reserved and he said no, but it's for four people. Please remember this part; I promise it get's better. He wanted to seat us next to another couple and the space is not big enough to adhere to 6 feet apart (CDC guidelines) so I asked if we could be seated upstairs or by the bar. Of course the mean hostess pointed to the bar. The waitress Opal greeted us as soon as we were seated and she was a sweeter treat than the hostess. She took our drink orders and made a suggestion on a drink for me. The appetizers were okay, but I wasn't wowed. My friend ordered the fried curry snapper with rice and peas and devoured it. I however didn't want to eat any meat and ordered the rasta reggae pasta. It was bland I had to put salt on my food, and I've never had to at any restaurant. As we were seated I noticed the rude hostess seating a couple at the same booth I asked to be seated at almost 40 mins later. The look of death and disgust was what I gave him, while he was seating them - I think he felt it too. My friend laughed the whole time, while I was so peeved. I considered speaking with his manager. I was pissed because I'm 5'1" and had to damn near climb up on the seat to sit at the bar. Came here with hubby for a quick after work bite and it did not disappoint. I remember coming here years ago and have been wanting to come back. Cody the bartender welcomed and seated us with a smile. This establishment is not big but it is definitely welcoming. The music was on point and decor fit the theme to make for a chill vibe. Our waitress Yanique was attentive and very pleasant always checking up on us to make sure we were good. These drinks that Cody whipped up were strong and hit the spot. The food was absolutely delicious. So often Caribbean restaurants don't serve authentic jerk chicken, but Bellyful did it right. This place is definitely losing its touch. I live close so I walked here to sit and work a few times. Typically everything is ok but now they dont even open upstairs anymore, which is the area that I used to like. Now if you go I'm the winter you pretty much get slapped by the cold every time the door opens. My menu was dirty. I'm pretty sure the server saw it but still gave it to me which speaks a lot to the every day practices here. Also my silverware was not clean. I walked in on a Saturday late night/ early morning. Restaurant was scheduled to close at 2:00 am. I stopped in at 1:00am and my order was taken. Person taking my order informed me that the wings that I ordered would take a little minute. No problem so I waited. Upon arrival, there was a dj playing music on the Saturday night. The restaurant/ bar was not crowded at all. There were 2 people sitting at the bar with the bartender alert and ready for more customers. I didn't order drinks from this location because I knew I had to drive so maybe next time. I received my food. It looked good. As far as taste... not impressed what so ever. I recently dined here with a friend after finding the restaurant on Yelp and looking at the reviews. I decided to give Bellyful a shot, even after noticing multiple reviewers note that the service was slow and bad at times, however they said the food was good. Upon entry we weren't greeted, I had to find someone to seat us. We were seated upstairs because there's was a large party celebrating a birthday on the main level. The decor is promising, but the tables are noticably higher than normal when you sit down. We sat near the window view of kitchen, which can only been seen if you stood up and looked however. There's was a DJ playing music, good music on this Saturday night. We ordered drinks and appetizers. My passion fruit margarita was terrible sweet it tasted like syrup, the waitress, Melissa was able to exchange it out for a frozen strawberry daiquri which was much better. I ordered the codfish fritters and my friend ordered the jerk shrimp skewers. The time it took for the appetizers to arrive was noticable, but I won't complain about that. The appetizers were good especially the jerk shrimp skewers. The codfish fritters was good, but a little bit dry for my taste. For the entree I got the grilled lobster tail with mashed yams and sauteed veggies. My friend ordered the chicken and red velvet waffles. The food took very long to come I didn't time it but it was very noticeable I'll leave it at that. My lobster tail was over cooked, but decent. The mashed yams wasn't for me and I didn't try the veggies at that point. I tried the red velvet waffle and it was severely dissappointed. It wasn't crispy or tasty and tasted stale. The service was slow perhaps due to the large party that was there. It was our first time there and it was a special occasion to be celebrated for myself. I thought, the server could have more welcoming and polite such as a "thank you for your business", especially since the restaurant is new. I won't be back and I've had better experiences at Negril in Brooklyn that also serve carribean food I would recommend a restaurant like that over here until Bellyful improves. Upon walking into the restaurant it was a Sunday afternoon around 5 and we were the only ones. The male waiter that day was super cool. Definitely made up for the day. Great staff can really help an establishment. The staff was friendly . On to the food and drinks. We were told they were out of stuff because of an even yesterday. I hope moving forward they can better prepare. I ordered Jerk wings and told a few minutes later they were out. I got cajun instead. While it didn't have a cajun taste. They were good. We also got buffalo wings which were good as well. The Rum Punch was great. Had a kick but wasn't overpowering. For the entree we got oxtail reggae pasta and it just wasn't it. I order through their website (1mac and cheese, 2 ginger drinks 2 cheesecakes and a salmon dinner) only for them to tell me they dont deliver that far after i called them to check my order( meaning if i didnt call i would of never gotten my food and they wouldn't have called me lol , i had to send an uber so i can get my food. Multiple caribbean drinks, and appetizers including jerk chicken wings, plantains and much more. I hate when a business gains notoriety and start to slack in service. I've been back twice since my initial visit and both times there were issues. One time our food took forever to come out. And one plate took longer than the others so by the time it finally came, the other plates were cold. The next time, I asked to be seated upstairs - which wasn't an issue the first time I came and the restaurant was empty - but now it is. Downstairs is directly in front of the door. I came for a Taco Tuesday event and sat at the bar. The bartender was initially very attentive, probably because I was the only one there. But as more patrons started to arrive - many of which he knew - his attentiveness slacked. He didn't know what type of tacos were being offered. The special came with a drink. I never got said drink... even though all of his friends received the same drink I was supposed to get. Some more than one. This place is definitely worth a try! I truly enjoyed my evening here. When we got there it was still relatively quiet with only a few couples during our meal. I think they've gotten a lot more traffic since then and I hope that all of the positives about this business have continued! I would definitely go back and recommend that people do the same. They had a huge variety of drinks. Almost overwhelming but they have a drink for whatever your moof or taste is. I was concerned about how long the food took but it truly seemed as if they were making it fresh particularly that delicious snapper. I've been to Bellyful about 3 times so far. Each time the staff has been very nice and accommodating to my group. The food has been okay for the most part. Not amazing but good enough. Most of things I tasted was good. The pasta dish however did not have much seasoning, that can be improved. Good happy hour specials. The drinks are good. Extensive cocktail menu. I ordered for delivery last night. It came fairly quickly and the portions were a good amount. We ordered the yard corn plate, the pirate of the Caribbean plate and the honey garlic salmon plate. I called beforehand to ask if these dishes came with rice and was told yes, so I was very disappointed when both meals arrived with no rice. I was excited for the mashed yams but they were just okay. The sauce on the salmon was good but there was way too much of it, which made the dish overly sweet. The pirates of the Caribbean plate only included one tinyyy piece of lobster meat and one clam SMH. There were a few shrimps and salmon chunks. The flavor was really good though. The yard corn had good flavor as well, and the toasted coconut was delicious, but the corn itself was really small and tasted old and soggy. I would go there and order it again to see if it tastes a littler more fresh. We also ordered the chocolate lava cake but it never came and no one called to let us know they didn't have it. Today, we celebrated my mentor and great friend's retirement at work. With the help of Bellyful, I placed an order over the weekend and spoke with a kind and helpful staff member over the phone. I ordered the oxtail curry goat and jerk chicken from the catering menu, and though the prices were a bit high, the food was worth it. My coworkers loved the food and even asked for the location so they could visit. The staff went above and beyond to deliver my order, even outside their regular hours. Visited Bellyful recently for Saturday night dinner and I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. I like the decor here. It's simple, elegant, and inviting. Even the animal/snakeskin booth I liked. Different and will last longer that the other normal frequently used textile for booths. Anyway, on to the food. We had a ackee and saltfish w/ plantains to start with. I had a pineapple ginger drink which was quite refreshing. My HB had a rum punch, which he said was really good. We also got jerk wings for apps. Main dish-- Steam fish for HB. I live nearby and and wanted to try out a local spot. Walking in there was no hostess so we sat ourselves in the booth. Unfortunately for us we had to move, because it was a four person seating area. The waitress asked politely if we could move to a smaller table which was fine, but the booth wouldve been nice considering is was pretty empty. Our waitress was attentive, knowledgeable, and polite. The ambiance is very warm and cozy. There's an option between outdoor, and indoor seating. It was Friday night, and they had a DJ whom was really good and played all the tunes. I struggle to write this review as I struggle in pure agony over a very full belly!! Thanks to Yelp I was able to find this place so me and my trusty sidekick (Harriet) hopped in an Uber. Upon arriving we werent sure if the place was open for business since it looked like they were still setting up but they led us to a comfortable booth and brought us a stylish food and cocktail menu. The place is modernly and comfortably designed with high ceilings and an upstairs eating section along with tables and chairs set put side if that's your dig. A man came around asking how we had heard about his business and we ended up having a brief discussion on Yelp and advertising. He introduced himself as Kenmar and he was very nice and personable as he invited us to check out the upstairs and pointed out some African art over a century years old on the wall. He explained that the place was only 5 weeks old which explained why I had never heard of them. While we waited for our appetizers he asked if we would like to try some samples. Boy would we! He brought out these coconut shrimp balls, buffalo fish something and prawn something......my apologies I didn't get the names because I was gobbling up those samples so fast it drowned out his voice. At first bite you can appreciate the taste and seasoning in everything and the complementary dipping sauces just make it better. Our appetizers were just as good and memorable....shrimp skewers, plantain w ackee and saltfish dip and mussels....we were living up to the establishment's name as our pants started to dig into our stomachs but we soldiered on. The owner suggested a drink called Slightly Tipsy and it lived up to his recommendation, a lot of The drinks have tongue in cheek names. Finally for our entree I tore at my goat roti entree like a starving animal because it was that tasty. The only complaint was poor Harriet did not like her waffles. I went into "BELLYFUL" on a Thursday afternoon not knowing what to really expect.... I've been in some hit or miss Carribean restaurants in Brooklyn before so I was mentally in a state of skepticism. After I entered the premise at Avenue M and UTICA avenue in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn: boy was I wrong. From the moment you step in the door you get the feel of being in a WEST INDIAN RESTAURANT in Brooklyn; the decor , Nelson Mandela iconic picture , the well appointed sofas right near the front entrance (which kind of reminded me of the sofa in SCARFACE)....everything is well thought-out and serves a clear purpose. The food portion was even better: the fact that we got to sample some pretty amazing CURRY GOAT (my favorite dish) and OXTAIL with Rice and Rasta pasta ( second favorite dish was pretty amazing). Oxtail was FALL OF THE BONE consistency which is what you aim for in a dish like that; Oxtail is a fairly complex dish so I appreciate BELLYFUL getting it right. Moving on to my favorite which is the CURRY GOAT: It was pretty awesome....the meat was nice and tender and the gravy even better. Again, goat meat is a pretty hard dish to execute but it was refreshing to see "BELLYFUL" mastering this complex dish with ease. I loved the way the presentation held the food together on the plate .Everything is well thought-out at BELLYFUL, no corners are cut and no shortcuts are taken here. The goal of this restaurant is to represent the BEST CARRIBEAN RESTAURANT in Brooklyn...period!! And I don't doubt for a second that "BELLYFUL" will be that premiere Carribean restaurant destination.
