Chicken stew, plantains, and homemade sorrel
    Dana H.

Yum, yum, yum!! This was my first time having Caribbean food, and it was tasty! I got their Chicken Stew, homemade Sorrel, and plantains. The chicken was so tender, and the sauces really sunk into the meat. It was just a tiny bit too heavy for me, but that's not the fault of the restaurant at all - it's just my preference. If you pair it with the rice, then it's perfect. The plantains were very unique as well. I'm used to Colombian plantains, and the ones here were much softer, sweeter, and the outside had a really nice crust. The highlight of my meal though, was the sorrel. I am a sucker for hibiscus, so I absolutely loved it. It's much more potent than most hibiscus drinks I've had, but it really hit the spot. It wasn't too sweet, had a nice sour tang to it, and it helped wash everything down. There's only one employee there who does both the cooking and serving - not sure if it was because it was so early, but I came at around 1pm on a Tuesday afternoon.

Really fun gem in Prospect Park. Slow service to start but kind worker. Every component of the oxtail was delish--the meat, the rice, and the steamed vegetables. Great entree. The roti curry is extremely flavorful too. Love the roti texture, and it ended up being a great burrito-like wrapper at the end of my meal. While the Jerk Chicken wings are delicious, I do think the spice and/or flavors could ramp up. The mac and cheese is the only fully disappointing dish at the table. It was very dry, crunchy, and anything but cheesy.

We went to check Monet in Venice exhibition food and wanted carribean food and this one was the closest and best reviewed. We tried jerk leg of lamb, salt fish & okra and oxtail....Portions were generous, food came quick and service was great...My favorite was the oxtail the meat was so soft and the rice and peas were perfect for soaking up the juices....my only dissapointment was not having the desserts on the menu available.

The jerk chicken is amazing!!! My friends and I meant to eat at the se7en next door but the kitchen was closed for the night so we were heading to the diner around the corner. Pete popped his head out the window and offered us some food. Pinito made is three huge platters of jerk chicken rice and peas and cabbages. Chris the bartender made us a really strong drink, not sure of the name. Food was amazing, the owner Jahmal was very inviting and willing to accommodate us. Great restaurant!

Highly recommend this restaurant! The Islands has been on my to try list for a while if I could ever make it over to Brooklyn. I was visiting a friend for a quick lunch and we knew the service had to be quick and the food delicious. The islands did not disappoint on either category! My friend and I came here during lunch time. We were greeted by the hostess and sat immediately. I love the layout of the restaurant. Depending on where you are sitting, you are able to see the kitchen as well as the front of the restaurant where the drinks are being served. It's a good size restaurant and wouldn't have an issue sitting various different party sizes. For food, I ordered the curry chicken with jasmine rice while my friend ordered the jerk chicken with beans and rice. We also ordered the Mac and cheese. Everything was delicious and the portion size was huge. While I ate a lot, I still had plenty of food to take home. I will definitely be back to try new dishes!

Stumbled upon this quaint place with very sweet staff on a Monday night. My friend and I shared the jerk chicken wings appetizer and the jerk chicken entree with roti that came with plaintain, salad, and curry. The jerk chicken from the entree is noticeably more tender (sliding-off-the-bone tender) than its jerk wings appetizer counterpart (but still good to me nonetheless). Sadly, we came on a day where there was no salt fish available but that will be for another day :)

Very friendly service, and plenty of tables for larger parties. Jerk chicken was a miss unfortunately- both white and dark meat pieces were overcook and dry, and there wasn't enough jerk sauce to cook and moisten every bite. Mashed potatoes was ok, definitely leans on the buttery side.

It has been over 8 years since The Islands relocated due north on Washington Ave. After a trek to Brooklyn Museum- we stepped foot and were greeted with warmth. My rum punch was nice and strong- the curry shrimps were succulent and fresh. So happy I got a chance to enjoy!

For mains, we tried the biang biang Rasta noodles with salmon (6/10) and the sofrino roasted chicken (5/10). Both were a bit underwhelming. I've heard their drinks are great but we didn't try any. Food-wise, I was a little disappointed, but still had a great time catching up with friends.

I'm Dominican so I know oxtail pretty well and have made it myself. Thankfully, this place absolutely delivered. The oxtail was perfectly slow-braised, tender, and falling right off the bone -- exactly how it should be. Absolutely amazing. Of course I had the rice and peas, plus some veggies. A few of the veggies were slightly overcooked, but still flavorful and enjoyable. The drinks looked incredible, but I went with the rum punch and loved it. It was a little sweet, but super flavorful, strong, and definitely worth ordering again. For dessert, I had the Hennessy cheesecake, which was rich, decadent, and unbelievably delicious. There were three of us dining, and we all left completely satisfied -- with take-home containers because the portions are VERY generous. The only thing that bothered me a bit was that our server seemed to focus most of her attention on my friend. She is Jamaican, and because I look like a white American woman, I felt a little overlooked at times, even when I had several requests myself. We also had to look for her a couple of times while she was sitting with a group nearby. That said, everyone overall was very nice and welcoming. The bussers especially stood out -- they checked on us often, kept everything clean, and even greeted me in Spanish, which I appreciated. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely be back with more people next time.

For my hubby, Brooklyn is home - and we always love exploring the new places the city has to offer when we visit. We had reservations, and were seated within 10 minutes, which was reasonable. The place was packed - everyone was in high spirits, and I was ready to taste some of the best Caribbean cuisine in the region. My hubby's best friend - a Brooklyn resident, joined us. He had been to the restaurant a few times - and had good things to say. We were not disappointed. I had the Brown Stew Red Snapper - *chef's kiss*. Hubby had the iconic Jerk Oxtail over Macaroni & Cheese Pie! The English language cannot convey the beauty of that combination! Tender, tender oxtail, falling off the bone with the creamy, cheesy mac & cheese! He wanted to savor that dish another day, so he got a to-go bag and took it back to the hotel! (I couldn't help but clean my plate - I was obsessed with the fish!) Our friend enjoyed the Hennessy Fried Shrimp (not pictured) - one of his favorite dishes at the restaurant. It looked delicious as well. For drinks, I had the Bob Marley cocktail. A colorful drink - flavorful - and effective! There were people celebrating their birthdays throughout the night - and the wait staff goes IN! I was enjoying watching at least 10 people receive the Stevie Wonder "Happy Birthday" song while we were there. Imagine my surprise when it was my turn! My birthday was the day before, and we had already celebrated in Manhattan. Having two special recognition events made the evening that much more special! Shout out to the Simpson crew who came with the song, the rhythm, the sparkling cake, and the good vibes! My 70th birthday was exceptional - without a doubt. The Simpson added the touch I needed. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Brooklyn!

But this is a reminder that no matter how good your cocktails are, no matter how delicious your food is, service is king, and a 20% automatic gratuity can often enable some pretty terrible staff management and lackadaisical attitudes. What a waste. I came here on Tuesday night with my top-tier chum to grab a drink before the Nets/Celtics game. I showed up about 15 minutes before she did and was able to secure two spots at the bar before her arrival. While I waited for her, I ordered a Dream Catcher, which sounded super tasty (Patron, and a lot of pineapple vibes)...and then I waited some more. The bartender was nice but she was just WAY too slow. She wasn't able to multitask and my drink literally took 10-15 minutes to make, which is just not acceptable, especially when it was clear it was the only one she was working on. It showed up a minute before my friend did, and my 15-minute head start was rendered completely moot. The other ominous development right from the start? While the bartender was slowly making the drink, two members of the waitstaff were just hanging out at the end of the bar playing on their phones. So already, it was clear that the support staff hadn't been managed/instructed to pitch in during periods of need. The drink itself was actually really good; it just took a ridiculous amount of time for her to make, which to me is both a strong indicator that you need to train her to do this quickly without losing the quality of the beverage and also ensuring that you have at least one other person helping her behind the bar. The bar itself was pretty packed and there wasn't a moment where she wasn't doing something. Read the room and get off your phone. That to me is an unforgiveable sin. When my friend showed up, she also ordered the Dream Catcher, and we got the Crab Rangoon and Shrimp Tempura apps to munch on. The apps came out pretty quickly and were really good - fried perfectly, which I think is the area where it's easy to overdo it and potentially ruin these items. Huge points there and made the service problems even more frustrating. We weren't provided with napkins/silverware to eat the apps, so my chum had to wander around the establishment looking for them (no one assisted her in that search). The slow bartending reared its head immediately and my chum also had to deal with a mystifying 15-minute wait for her cocktail. We had about 40 minutes to play with before we had to be at the game, but because the service was so mediocre, we couldn't risk it - so they missed out on a second drinks and apps. Just leaving money on the table. We were so disappointed walking out of there. A lot of the qualities you'd want to pre-game before an NBA matchup are here, and I didn't even get into the ambience, which was both pretty chill with dim lighting but also had a little electricity in it. They have a ton of good material to work with . But if you can't trust the staff to be engaged and provide quality hospitality, it doesn't really matter. We had a conversation about coming back here some other time potentially but they just don't deserve it. Also, if you're trying this hard to figure out a way to strategically have a good time at a bar, that's all you need to know - you've answered your own question. And when we saw the 20% gratuity added? Final slap in the face. Frankly, if you're going to do that, at the very least let us know when you hand us the bill that it's added on; it's so easy to miss in a darkened bar, and given the other issues I just can't give the benefit of the doubt there. But this is why automatic gratuities need to be abolished. The bartender and the rest of the staff have no incentive to roll up their sleeves and provide a positive experience - they're getting paid no matter what. Hopefully management really takes a step back to reconsider their stance here or at least improve the staffing so they don't take all of the legitimate positives here and throw them in the trash can. You should be building on the good stuff, not canceling it out.
