This was unfortunately one of the biggest disappointments of the year, and it was especially infuriating because the food and drink I had were really good - good enough that this would have been close to perfect. But this is a reminder that no matter how good your cocktails are, no matter how delicious your food is, service is king, and a 20% automatic gratuity can often enable some pretty terrible staff management and lackadaisical attitudes. What a waste. I came here on Tuesday night with my top-tier chum to grab a drink before the Nets/Celtics game. I showed up about 15 minutes before she did and was able to secure two spots at the bar before her arrival. While I waited for her, I ordered a Dream Catcher, which sounded super tasty (Patron, and a lot of pineapple vibes)...and then I waited some more. The bartender was nice but she was just WAY too slow. She wasn't able to multitask and my drink literally took 10-15 minutes to make, which is just not acceptable, especially when it was clear it was the only one she was working on. It showed up a minute before my friend did, and my 15-minute head start was rendered completely moot. The other ominous development right from the start? While the bartender was slowly making the drink, two members of the waitstaff were just hanging out at the end of the bar playing on their phones. So already, it was clear that the support staff hadn't been managed/instructed to pitch in during periods of need. The drink itself was actually really good; it just took a ridiculous amount of time for her to make, which to me is both a strong indicator that you need to train her to do this quickly without losing the quality of the beverage and also ensuring that you have at least one other person helping her behind the bar. The bar itself was pretty packed and there wasn't a moment where she wasn't doing something. Read the room and get off your phone. That to me is an unforgiveable sin. When my friend showed up, she also ordered the Dream Catcher, and we got the Crab Rangoon and Shrimp Tempura apps to munch on. The apps came out pretty quickly and were really good - fried perfectly, which I think is the area where it's easy to overdo it and potentially ruin these items. Huge points there and made the service problems even more frustrating. We weren't provided with napkins/silverware to eat the apps, so my chum had to wander around the establishment looking for them (no one assisted her in that search). The slow bartending reared its head immediately and my chum also had to deal with a mystifying 15-minute wait for her cocktail. We had about 40 minutes to play with before we had to be at the game, but because the service was so mediocre, we couldn't risk it - so they missed out on a second drinks and apps. Just leaving money on the table. We were so disappointed walking out of there. A lot of the qualities you'd want to pre-game before an NBA matchup are here, and I didn't even get into the ambience, which was both pretty chill with dim lighting but also had a little electricity in it. They have a ton of good material to work with . But if you can't trust the staff to be engaged and provide quality hospitality, it doesn't really matter. We had a conversation about coming back here some other time potentially but they just don't deserve it. Also, if you're trying this hard to figure out a way to strategically have a good time at a bar, that's all you need to know - you've answered your own question. And when we saw the 20% gratuity added? Final slap in the face. Frankly, if you're going to do that, at the very least let us know when you hand us the bill that it's added on; it's so easy to miss in a darkened bar, and given the other issues I just can't give the benefit of the doubt there. But this is why automatic gratuities need to be abolished. The bartender and the rest of the staff have no incentive to roll up their sleeves and provide a positive experience - they're getting paid no matter what. Hopefully management really takes a step back to reconsider their stance here or at least improve the staffing so they don't take all of the legitimate positives here and throw them in the trash can. You should be building on the good stuff, not canceling it out. read more

The ambience is okay, very dark in the restaurant. I would say it could be an ideal location for date night as it's right across from Barclays. My wife and I came here for Saturday brunch. It's a cosy place with exposed brick walls and industrial stile lighting. It's got two big TVs above the bar, giving it an upscale, mini sports bar kind of vibe. It's subtle but clearly they spared no expense on the furniture and furnishings. We enjoyed the 90s R&B playing in the back. As I sat in a seat facing the window I looked at Barclay's Arena and remembered that this is a prime location, making sense of the high priced menu. Not many dishes are below $22, most are closer to $30. The Bellinis were good. The food was excellent. The Island Toast is French toast made with coco bread, which was light, soft and flavorful. Didn't need the syrup. The chicken was delicious, marinated and well seasoned! The service was friendly and on point! We're looking forward to coming back soon! read more

Went to Charm Bar with a friend while in town! He said it's one of his favorite places and I see why! We didn't have a reservation but we were seated promptly and warmly by the staff on a Saturday during brunch hours! Charm has the music and vibes--I loved the playlist, hip-hop and R&B tunes. And not too loud, just enough for you to hear and sing along yet still have a conversation at the tables. They have a bottomless brunch option. Though I didn't opt for that, it's there FYI. I ordered the ox tail and grits along with a sangria. The food was delicious and filling! The sangria was good too, a bit sweet but the bartender said next time, request no simple syrup. Traveling for work and stumbled upon this gem. I'm giving a four because of the ambiance, service, and cocktail. My food was only okay. I had the oxtail and the fatty ration was a bit hired. I realize that's going to happen but more so than usual. Also, I felt it lacked depth, maybe it would've been better the next day since seasons settle. It came piping and the rice and peas were okay. The jerk chicken wings were great. It had the heat and the right amount of marinade. I would've just sat and ate those. I wanted the oxtail wonton sooooo badly but there was a possibility of cross contamination with shellfish and I have a shrimp allergy. The chef didn't recommend it and I appreciate that. Cocktail was light and refreshing. Not Too sweet but it's in the sweet category. Everyone was incredibly nice and hospitable. I'd go back to try other things if I return to Brooklyn. There's a real Southern charm about Charm, located right across from Barclays. This place can get quite busy if there's a game or concert happening. We had no idea, but came at 6pm before a basketball game. Luckily, they were able to seat us on a high table with 90 minute limit. To start off, I had the Cloud 9 ($18) cocktail while the fiancé had the AM ($18) cocktail. Mine reminded me of a sweet and strong jungle juice you probably had in college while the AM was like an espresso martini. It's pretty, but a bit too sweet for my liking. The menus are on tablets with photos, which is quite fancy. I ordered the Signature Mac and Cheese ($14) with Oxtail (+$14) while the fiancé had the Rasta Pasta ($24) with Chicken (+$8). Both of these dishes were delicious and so flavorful. The pasta dish is a main entree, so it's bigger and can be overwhelming for one to eat. The creaminess with a kick of spice is nice here, but one-noted if you're eating a lot of it. I loved my mac and cheese, which is everything you'd want --creamy, cheesy, and scrumptious. The tender and moist oxtail paired with the macaroni is perfection. Definitely a must-get item here! The space is quite intimate with a dim, gastropub vibe. If you're coming here, make sure to get the mac and cheese with oxtail. Also, absolutely loved the 90's R&B music they have playing here; it's like they just took my Spotify playlist here. Note that they already add a 20% gratuity to your check (even for a party of two). Came here on a Friday night with my ladies. I loved the cozy feeling of this place and the vibes. Music was on point. For cocktails we ordered Cloud 9, Ella and D'usse Sangria. My least favorite drink was Ella. The other two cocktails were delicious. We wanted to try the shrimp plantain cups for appetizers. But our waiter stated they ran out for the night. So we ordered the signature mac & cheese which was delicious. For our main entrée I attempted to order the West Indies Scampi but they ran out for the night. Our waiter suggested to order the Rasta pasta with shrimp. We ordered Rasta pasta with oxtail and the Jerk Chicken dish. The Rasta pasta was really good. The oxtail was super tender and the shrimp were seasoned very well. The Jerk chicken dish was delicious and super flavorful. Even the broccoli was seasoned to perfection. My friend ordered Orange Ginger Glazed Salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salmon was cooked just right. Not dry but full of flavor and tbat orange glaze was delicious. I ordered two drinks, my first drink was Junelee. It had Hennessy cognac, allspice dram, pineapple juice, orgeat, coconut cream & lime juice. I enjoyed it. If you like pina colada or creamy drinks this is the one. It was sweet and smooth not too sweet just the right amount. My second drink was Rum Raisin. It had Chairmen's reserve spiced rum, vanilla liqueur, heavy cream & raisin agave. The first sip of that drink was astonishing. The drink was rich, warm, with a sweet flavor almost holiday like spices. My friend had the Cumbersome. Pelton de la muerte mezcal, St. Germaine, cucumber puree, lemon juice & simple syrup. She had her eye on that drink.Her second drink was Dream Catcher. Patrón silver tequila, pineapple liqueur, pineapple juice, angostura bitters & orange bitters. We also ordered dessert. We had Black Thai Rice pudding dessert. I have never had rice pudding before. The dessert was so good. The Thai pudding had coconut lime cremeux, cardamom crumb, guava sorel gel, and a kiss of lime zest. The ambiance was simple yet chic. The music was great it was such a vibe. Add to that the delicious cocktails and equally delicious food, will have you planning your return. Our server was Rockstar and he was. So warm, genuinely friendly and professional! Honestly the only thing that I liked about this place was the music. It was a total vibe, we were singing along to the classic 90's music and we were still able to talk and be heard. The service made this whole experience terrible and it just made everyone at our table upset. Our servers were Michael and Mykola. I'm a diabetic, and every time I ordered for a sprite, something I asked for along with everyone else's order, they forgot to give me my drink, Every Single Time! If I was having low blood sugar, I would've passed out with how long they took. We were seated and placed our entire order at 9 and didn't receive our entrees by 10:47, we timed it! We waited for our food for an hour and 47 minutes, that's ridiculous. The table next to us was seated after our table and got their food before we did. Mind you, I understand that we were a group of 5 and they were a group of 2 but still, I used to be a server and we've been to other places where it didn't take that long to receive our meal. Once we finally did get our entrees, it was so mid that we were all very disappointed. My steak was over done to the point of being burnt, they didn't have mashed potatoes because they ran out, so I had to pick an alternative option, and the mac and cheese side order we received, was so bland, no one at the table wanted to eat it. On top of all that, someone from our table was the very last to receive her meal, waiting an extra 20 mins for her food, mind you she ordered the same thing as someone else at the table, so the reason as to why she received hers so late still baffles us. They had a full service staff working on board with minimal tables, our experience was inexcusable. We chose the bar to get quicker service on the drinks. The space is limited but cozy. Bathroom was clean spacious but definitely single occupant. When we sat we received 2 iPads that featured restaurants menu. Easy to navigate and choose from the illustrations and descriptions. I went with the "Lamb Burger" and "Shrimp Tempura". Both were very delicious. Had nothing to take home lol. The music was a vibe especially if your into wizkid, soca, house music. I'm sad to say I am very disappointed with my experience. My friend and I were looking to have dessert in the area when the owner saw us outside. He invited us in - he is very friendly. It didn't look like there was any space for us but he insisted they would make space. When we spoke to the hostess, she said she could give us a table but she'd need it back at 7:45pm. It was 7:10pm, that gives us 35 minutes to dine-in. I should have just left then. We told her we were only ordering dessert so we'd be quick, to which she replied, "we sell dessert?". Again, I should have just left. We ordered two cheesecakes - one buscoff and one strawberry shortcake. Neither were good. I don't mean kinda ok, they were not fresh or good AT ALL. They tasted like cardboard and that freezer or fridge taste you get when something is either freezer burned or in the fridge too long. I figured - this is not where you come for that. Let me order a meal to go, so I can give them a fair shot and try the food. I asked them to put the to-go meal on a separate check, as my friend and I were splitting the dessert tab. I was surprised to see my ox tail entree went from $42 to $50. An automatic gratuity was added. I asked about this and was told this is how it's done even for to-go food. So I have to rush out in 35 minutes, eat bad dessert, which has an automatic 20% gratuity, and pay a tip AGAIN on a to-go meal??? To make matters worse, the screen asks if you want to add a tip, after a tip was automatically added! If you don't pay attention, you wouldn't know you are tipping twice. I am not picky. I spend so much money dining out and believe in supporting small businesses. But I taking advantage leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Seems unethical even. Anyone who eats lamb know it has a distinct taste but at Charm, put a Caribbean touch and it was really enjoyable and like butter to eat. I had the fried chicken and waffles. Again the Caribbean flavor, it wasn't just vanilla essence it was definitely what we use, mixed essence (combo of essence & spices). The chicken wasn't just fried, it was seasoned and cooked with love. Sounds like I'm going in but the other patrons plates looked just as amazing and they definitely didn't disappoint. It is a neighborhood gem, we saw how many people they had to turn away just because they couldn't accommodate. This was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. The food was just bad -- completely unseasoned, bland, and poorly prepared. The grits were hard, dry, and gritty (no pun intended). I've never had grits like that in my life -- I was actually scared to eat them. I asked for extra butter, salt, and pepper, hoping that would help, but even that couldn't save them. Then came the toast -- one slice was burnt to a crisp, and the other looked like it hadn't even been toasted all the way. It was basically dough sitting on my plate. My friend ordered the chicken, and that was just as bad. It had absolutely no seasoning at all -- it literally tasted like they pulled the chicken straight out of the coop and dropped it in the fryer. Gotta love a black owned restaurant in close proximity to your employer. Came here for dinner three times and for brunch once. I've had fried calamari and lobster ragoon as appetizers. The fried Calamari is amazing especially with the dipping sauce. Lobster ragoons is something I would just have once. The steak with mashed potatoes and broccoli meal is the absolute best. I will not have the grilled chicken rasta pasta meal again; one time thing. The drinks are incredible! Especially the Junelee and Wray Maker. Unfortunately, my brunch experience wasn't the best. I ordered chicken and waffles but instead received chicken with french toast. My side of turkey bacon was burnt and almost inedible. I came here for a super late brunch and I give them props for seating us bc we didn't have a resy and arrived right before the cutoff time. Overall I think the food was alright but definitely room for improvement. The calamari and the Caesar salad were not good. But the entrees were much better. The salmon and lamb chops were decent. I didn't get cocktails so I can't comment on that but my nonalcoholic drink was way too sweet. Service was iight. Music was jumping. Space is super tight. Stop by if you're in the area. read more

We started with the pork with plantains. Delicious. The oxtail stew was 10/10. Perfectly cooked and fell off the bone! The Rasta pasta with oxtail was also really good but you must love spice! I have a decent spice tolerance and I could barely handle a few bites. The place is very small so make a reservation ahead of time. We went on a Saturday night at 5:30 before a conference and it was pretty full. The music was unfortunately was very loud and we could barely hear each other speak. This establishment is in a central location, located on Dean street close to the Barclays. It's not the easiest to find and there's very limited street parking, but they are open late than most restaurants in that area on a Monday night and I was starving. The decor is beautiful and the restaurant looks clean and trendy. The music selection is fun and very 90's/2000's. I caught myself singing all through my evening, which was fun. I really wanted to love this restaurant as I love Caribbean food but sadly I was greatly disappointed. To start the service was deplorable and that's me being nice. From the moment I walked in the staff's energy was a bit unwelcoming, which for me really took away from the ambiance. However, I still decided to give it a try. We were sat almost immediately. Our server Marlyn came, took our drink orders, and the drinks came out pretty fast. We ordered the Spicy Meg and the AM. I was in the mood for an espresso martini so the AM was the perfect substitute. The Spicy Meg was also delicious, the nutmeg was a perfect touch. Both drinks were strong but did not taste boozy, which was a plus. The server came back and took our orders. We ordered the Jerk Chicken and the Guava Cauliflower Fried Chicken and substituted the rice for the pineapple coconut rice (which was a $12 up charge that weren't notified of until we got the bill- a heads up would have been nice). Our food came out rather quickly, and was delicious and a generous portion. I personally liked the Guava Cauliflower Fried Chicken more than the Jerk Chicken, which surprised me because Jerk Chicken is my favorite. The pineapple-coconut rice was moist and better than the rice and beans as the rice and beans was dry and left little to be desired. However, the Jerk Chicken was tasty and the broccoli was cooked perfectly and the seasoning on the broccoli was delicious. However, my night went south mid way through my meal. As my partner and I were eating and chatting I noticed that my glass for the AM had a crack in it. When I went to turn the glass around it completely broke in my hand. I immediately notified my server and she looked at me unbothered and told me she would speak to the bar. No apologies, no concern, no empathy. I was baffled. 20 minutes later I had heard nothing from our sever and noticed that she was sitting at a table without a care in the world. I flagged over another sever ( I think her name was Chloe) who came over. I explained the situation and she tried to make it right. She looked concerned and said she would be back. She came back and brought me another drink and told me she would take the drink off the bill. She was helpful and she tried to turn it around for us, but the night was already soured by the disdain received from our original server Marlyn, when it was a serious issue that should have been treated as such. It really could have taken a worse turn had glass been ingested or had I cut myself, but she treated it a as minor error. Overall the food and drinks were great but I won't be back. Omg this drink is so good. I was out on a chilly day and have been trying to get a seat at Charmed for a while. Whenever I'd walk in they'd be super busy or packed and I finally got a chance to sit at the bar on a rainy night! This Campfire drink right here is amazing. It's warm and cozy and they light a marshmallow on fire. It's theatrical, it's extra and I love a cocktail with a story to tell! Okayyy! Check em out. Give it a try. I've been to Charm Bar a few times, and overall, my experiences have been good, except for one time when a group of us was seated outside for a birthday dinner. It was cold, and there was no real decor or vibe outside. The food was off that day for all of our meals, the service was poor, and it just wasn't the best day for them. However, I've also had great experiences where it was the total opposite. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and the food was amazing. So I don't want that one experience to discourage anyone from coming here. I'd just recommend requesting indoor seating. The restaurant is small, so it's best to arrive early in the evening to beat the crowd. The ambiance is very nice, with a modern rustic look--brick walls with abstract paintings. On one of my good visits, my meal was fantastic. For an appetizer, I had the Shrimp and Plantain Cups, and for my entree, I enjoyed the Mac and Cheese with a lobster add-on and the West Indies Lobster Scampi. Everything was delicious. I washed it all down with three drinks: The Wray Maker (my favorite), Spicy Meg, and Rum Raisin. They were all on point, but The Wray Maker, with my go-to rum (Wray & Nephew), stood out. Overall, I would definitely recommend coming here, but try to aim for indoor seating. Your experience will be much better. read more

The tables are very tight. There is no space. The drinks are underwhelming and grossly overpriced. The service was slow. Both the hostess and waiter were slow. Everyone is moving at a snail's pace. The food was really really good. We had the griot which looked dry but wasn't at all it was so tender & flavorful. Lamb chop rasta pasta was good. The salmon was really good too. I had the steak which had a great taste to it. The guava jerk was also good. For appetizers we had the lobster & lump crab Rangoon o so good. The Mac & cheese so good, the guava jerk wings were finger licking good. Overall our food was really good we were having a great time. Our waiter was really nice but I think he may have taken for granted that we were mad cool cuz he went on break & didn't come back till like an hour later. Now in the interim someone else comes & asks if we want the check I said no I told the waiter there was 2 birthdays so she said oh ƙ & then still didn't come back until our waiter came back asking if he was supposed to be doing something for us. I told him about the birthdays & wanted the check cuz at that point we had waited so long. Then he came out with a check & then came out with 2 shots with like a fire presentation which was dope. Charm, I like you and I shall certainly return. The size of the establishment is def. charming as it's quaint and intimate. What we ate- mushroom tacos, guava wings, seafood linguini, lamb burger What we drank- -2 junelees 1 dreamcatcher 1 cognac sidecar later we enjoyed our drinks! They were all very tasty! Pros- Mushroom tacos are AMAZING! Well Seasoned and simply DELICIOUS (I opted out of the bbq sauce and kept the crema) -We were able to walkin in pretty late (about 1115ish) and get seated in 20 minutes or so. Con- I specifically said that I don't like spice. I ordered my lamb burger with the sauce on the side. Never ate my burger until the next day only to discover it was slathered in the sauce. I was only able to eat half of it before I tossed it because I'm personally very sensitive to heat spices. I look forward to returning and exploring more food options on the menu.
