This bar has a very fun fun concept- a bar turned from a former brothel. The motif on the door is a play on the 'this is not a pipe' work, which really added to the vibe I was expecting. Unfortunately this place fell very flat. Leading with what we liked: Their mocktail offerings were good, promising a 0.0% ABV which is hard to come across when mocktails are offered. They serve oysters, which adds to that aphrodisiac experience of the oh so 'wow this is a former brothel!'. The bartenders and servers were fast and very sociable with the more sociable customers. The immediate entrance is very tight, and it was uncomfortable navigating the space. We expected there'd be more seating in the back, which there was, but it was limited and not offered to us until we asked for it. We honestly had no clue where it would be and only asked because of how this place was advertised. While it was comfy once we made our way back there, it was reminiscent of a lounge style bar space that almost any bar could replicate with the right room and budget. We didn't feel as though this hit the spot and were let down by this experience. I'm not sure if I can judge the menu of drinks/ foods as expensive, but we left hungry bc we couldn't justify some of the prices. In addition, I've seen a lot of complaints about the volume of the music: it's definitely loud at the front but a lot lower in that back lounge space. It's as loud as any bar's music level would be, but truth be told we were expecting music that matched the vibe of what was advertised and yes, at a lower volume. read more

I was hoping for meatier oysters like Blue Points, but they only had smaller, high-salinity varieties. The drinks were good, but I was expecting a better balance between food and drinks. Experience: 3/5 The space was extremely tight, and I had to sit almost on top of my husband just to fit. Our drinks barely fit on the table, especially once the food arrived. The couch seating didn't feel sanitary for eating, and the place was so loud that we had to shout to hear each other. A large group of us went post a wedding. We had the groom in his tux & the bride in her full 1950's gown and veil. The owners and staff could not be more professional and accommodating. We originally sat in the back patio area in a private corner cabana with a comfortable couch. It was well decorated. When the patio area closed and we were moved inside. We came here for drinks before dinner down the block and were pleasantly surprised that they had a happy hour until 7pm! I don't think I saw it anywhere on their website. The happy hour offers 3 dollars off their specialty cocktails and a dollar oyster. There wasn't really a speakeasy vibe but it was a nice dimly lit bar with spacious bar seating and nice service. I soooo dig this spot! Came here one Saturday night w/ a few friends. There was a bit of a wait for seating for 4. So I say get here before 8 if you want to sit w/o waiting. The place definitely has that speakeasy vibe...dark, low moody lighting, and music you can rock back and forth to. The drink of the night for me was George Washington's night out. My spouse and I were strolling down Smith early May and decided to check this place out. Little did we know that it was some kind of designated "cooler than thou" establishment. First of all, don't make it out to seem you are a bar if you are not welcoming to walk-ins. Secondly, making it pitch black inside does not really appeal to anybody (read the numerous reviews complaining about the lighting or lack thereof). When we asked if the backyard was open, bartender replied "later". When asked what time, he said "oh no, not for a few weeks". Me and my spouse looked at each other and laughed. Overall rating: 4.8 Absolutely one of my favorite bars in Carrol Gardens. I've been here only for drinks on a date and solo, but I could totally see their food also being good. I love how intimate, fancy and sultry the bar feels. It was interesting that the backyard feels like a different spot altogether. After seeing a reel of this place on Instagram my friend and I were super curious about this brother themed bar, and decided to stop by this place since we were in the area. Luckily without reservations we were able to get seated right away around 8:30 pm on a Friday night. They have a cool speakeasy vibe indoors and a French patio vibe on the outside. Really interesting decor and drinks. I had the frozen frose cocktail called U UP? and my friend had the Fallen Angel. Both drinks were great but it was such a humid night that we decided to leave after one drink. Overall, service and good and its a super chill spot. Such a cute and hidden bar in Brooklyn that's perfect for a date night. Upon entering, you walk through a narrow and dark bar leading to the back. There's a room with a bed (wink wink) before being welcomed to the back outdoor patio area. It's filled with greenery and string lights for an aesthetic and romantic vibe. So apparently this bar is housed in a former brothel and the back area which is now filled with plush seating used to have a bed. Sadly, the bed is gone! Regardless, the sultry vibe is still present. Jewel tones with gold accenting and a lot of mood lighting really make this bar...and also they have great cocktails. Wasnt a huge fan that the menu is on an instagram story, but so it goes! I had the little death house cocktail and an old fashioned. The little death came with some smoke inside the glass. I wasn't looking to mix anything inhaleable with alcohol so I blew out the smoke. Interesting array of flavors in the cocktails. I typically go for neat drinks but they didn't have a whiskey list so I opted for another whiskey based cocktail afterwards. This would be a really impressive place to surprise someone with your good taste at, if not for the fact that it was a former brothel then for their over the top experiential cocktails. There are a couple of nods to the space's former occupant, like the sign out front that reads "This is not a brothel. There are no prostitutes at this address" or the literal four poster bed that has its own room at the back of the business, but unless you care much about a place feeling like a speakeasy, there's no need to pay any mind to the fanciful decorations. The drinks and backyard are really where it's at. The backyard is expansive, and curves around to make way for a large pebbled area, with cozy seating covered in pillows and books. The drink menu is divided into sections like 'shaken' 'stirred' and 'summer' but you'd be doing yourself a favor to order multiple rounds of drinks and from different parts of the menu. Every drink unfolded before our eyes, from the way it was poured and presented to the way the different notes evolved as the drank sat in front of us. We also got a really nicely put together cheese board and different kinds of oysters on the half shell. All my favorite things on one menu! If you can find a quiet and temperate time to go, I can think of no better respite than to spend an evening in the backyard of Barely Disfigured. read more

Damn, they've really taken this backyard to the next level! I already loved their backyard pre-COVID, but now that it's reopened, the backyard is where it's at. They've taken over the adjacent area and created a huge space that is group-friendly for you to enjoy your expertly crafted cocktails. Definitely loads of Tulum vibes. You'll be transported to a different part of the world, and I don't blame you if you temporarily forget that you live in a concrete jungle. Food menu is somewhat limited, but otherwise love this joint. Prices are actually pretty good compared to the rest of the city considering the quality of the drinks here. Really wanted to love this place but was left pretty disappointed after finally making it down to Cobble Hill to check it out. Housed in a former brothel it's dimly lit and has a cozy vibe, with limited seating down the curved bar and a few seats in the window. The menu is accessible via Instagram which...kinda sucks for those of us who don't have IG. The bartenders--who had been loudly laughing and joking with each other when we came in and took a minute to even greet us--begrudgingly gave us a printed menu to look at. The drink selection is interesting and all of the drinks we tried were good, which is the biggest redeeming part about this bar. The two male bartenders continued to be the loudest people in the bar for the duration of our time there and were also eating snacks with their mouths open. Pet peeve, but it was gross and really killed all the ambiance. The other big issue is we were seated at the bar near the door and every time people came in they left the door open and it was FREEZING outside. None of the staff ever went to close the door, so we ended up having to get up multiple times to shut the door. Might give this one another chance once it gets warmer and if there were different bartenders. read more
