We went full 1920s prohibition for the…read moretheme, and it turns out we'd unknowingly picked the perfect building for it: Clover Club is named after an actual pre-Prohibition cocktail, first served at a Philadelphia gentlemen's club back in the 1890s, and the bar has anchored Cobble Hill since 2008 under a bartender who's since been recognized as one of the best in the world at her craft. The staff leaned all the way into our theme, dressed the part and serving period drinks to match, a level of commitment you don't get everywhere. Genuinely cool place with real character, old wood, low light, the kind of room that feels like it's been there since the era it's named for even though it hasn't. Location isn't the easiest to get to if you're not already in the neighborhood, which probably keeps it from being the scene it deserves to be. Diamond in the rough. It's classy but not too fancy and has enough space but doesn't get too loud. They have a nice happy hour menu from Tuesday-Friday from 5 to 7 as well as all day on Sundays which has very decent prices such as an $8 old fashioned among other things (see the photo.) the bartenders I've had before have been friendly with some good recommendations. Outside of their wide selection of cocktails which run the gamut of liquors, they have a nice wine selection, a handful of craft beers, and a very small food selection. The first time I was here, I had one drink which was the excellent Star of The Ice Snow for $17 with Iwai 45 whiskey, brie-washed Carpano Antica, Fernet Branca, barrel-aged orange bitters, and sassafras bitters. It had a a bit of bitterness, some sweetness, some spice, and some light mint from the fernet and was a pleasant complex drink and was certainly worth it from the price. The second time I was here was just this evening where I had two drinks. I first went with something that I was thinking of getting the first time which is their outstanding Vivian Darkbloom for $15 with Union mezcal, lime, pineapple, charcoal, Velvet Falernum, and lime bitters. The drink has mild citrusy sweetness as well a bit of smoke from the mezcal and is probably my favorite drink I've had here though the other drink I had the first time gives it stiff competition. I asked the bartender what he recommends and after a small discussion, he said either The Bell Witch (which is a gin and chartreuse cocktail with a strong herbal flavor) or what I went with. Said drink was the Under a Cosmic Cloak for $16 with rhubarb infused rum, Trois Rivieres rum, Smith & Cross rum, yerba mate, lime, grapefruit, and whey. The bartender said that it wouldn't be overly sweet as the rum was milk washed and this was indeed the case with just a mild sweetness and some fruitiness. There was a light herbal flavor otherwise presumably from the mate as well as a light citrus note and overall, it was good though definitely the least complex of the drinks I've tried and probably my least favorite but was definitely not a bad drink. The drinks here are reasonably priced for the quality, the bartenders are friendly, and it is classy but not overbearingly so. I can see why it's popular and I wish I stopped in more.

I got a burrata salad and the tuna poke. Both were delicious, very cool and refreshing. The problem was with the service. Our table ordered coca colas as we had friends coming to meet us there for cocktails after. Our waiter seemed annoyed, as if the check would not be large enough because we were drinking sodas. As a result his tip would be smaller as it was a smaller check. I hated this so much. I worked in the service industry and treated my tables with smaller tabs the exact same as tables with larger tabs. He never came to clear our plates. We sat there for over 30 minutes with dirty dishes piled in front of us while we waited for our other friends to arrive. When they came in, they were treated to a table full of dirty dishes. It was such a put off and our waiter was just RUDE. There was no excuse for this. When we ordered ONE round of drinks, this server NEVER came to check on us or asked if we wanted another. The bad service was inexcusable and I will not be back on my next visit to Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, our most recent visit was the complete opposite. We arrived right when they opened, sat at the bar, and ended up spending around $200. Once the bar got busy, it felt like we were completely forgotten. After finishing our drinks, we waited about 40 minutes trying to order another round. When we finally got the bartender's attention, instead of acknowledging the wait or apologizing, he simply told us he had "many drinks before us." We waited another 30 minutes before deciding to just ask for the check. There was no apology for the delay, no "thank you," and no goodbye after we'd spent a significant amount of money. He handed us the check and walked away as if he couldn't have cared less. It also seemed like he was the only person behind the bar who knew how to make the cocktails, which created a bottleneck all night. That's an operational issue, but unfortunately it was made much worse by the lack of customer service. We know this place is capable of providing a great experience because we've had it twice before. Hopefully this was just an off night, but based on this visit, we'd definitely think twice before returning.

But as far as I know, there are no other bars in Brooklyn that have all of the above, giant metal scissors above the pinball machines because the place was almost a barbershop, dice for Cee-lo, and FILTERED WATER TAPS AT EVERY TABLE. Those that know me best know that water is my favorite beverage, and I absolutely love that Seaborne has water available to all, right at your fingertips. Pinball tip: If you want to feel like you're good at pinball, play the Metallica game. If you want to feel like you're a worthless human being, be as bad at pinball as I am and play the Wizard of Oz. The owner also lives upstairs part time, and he's the man. That doesn't really matter much, but it's a fun fact for you.
