They've been around for years but I've only recently discovered it and have been twice, enjoying each visit. I've sampled the cheese plate and ordered the truffle oil Mac and cheese both times. The Mac and cheese is light on the truffle flavor and could use a sharper cheese for more of a kick imo. The mulled wine is my go to for the season. We came to celebrate my son as a new playwright but unfortunately whomever was running the show of seating that night was a complete jerk, highly obnoxious to us for trying to gather on the patio. He made us leave - supposedly bc we were a group of 10 and he caps groups he will serve at 6. We were all completely sober (had been at a play) and felt so joyous and were excited to talk about the beautiful art that had just come to life when this man's incredible and abrupt angry tantrum changed the mood. I'm surprised that I hadn't written a review for this place yet. This has always been a solid go-to spot for hangouts in the neighborhood. It's an all-purpose place - good for groups or as couples. The vibes are amazing, especially when the weather is nice and can sit outside - but it's also a nice hideaway indoors in inclement weather. On cold days, they have a cozy fireplace inside and a fire pit outside. I've had nothing but the friendliest of service here - great selection of wines, and the food/snacks are actually a bit underrated in my opinion. I've had many memorable moments at Black Mountain - days that have started here, and nights that have ended here. Cozy is the word most used when describing Black Mountain Wine House and it describes it perfectly. They do not accept reservations, but we were fortunate to get seated right away. The restaurant is small , and on a cold evening the warmth of the fireplace was welcomed. As expected they have an extensive wine menu, along with some beers and even a cider, which is what I opted for. They have a variety of small plates, and our server offered suggestions for how many we should order, he suggested 3 items and we went with 4. We has the salted cod and artichoke . This would not be something I would normally order, but according to yelp reviews it was supposed to be excellent and it was. The cod was not too salty, but blended well with artichoke and was perfect with warm bread. We also ordered brie and apple crostini from their specials. The apples were crisp ands sweet to compliment the brie. Even though yelp reviews were mixed we also had the goat cheese tart . I liked the beets and potato crust. Lastly we had the house panini, which we did not finish, even though it was very good, it was filling with mortadella, polish bacon and apricot aioli. Service was excellent, and did not rush even though there were several parties waiting when we left. We felt as if we were in a welcoming cabin.... in the middle of Brooklyn. read more

When I went, it was clearly still warm but it was a lot smaller and less cozy than I was expecting. Fortunately with just a walk-in, my friend and I got the last seat. We ended up sharing a panini which was a great portion, but when asked about the mulled wine or timing - the waitress couldn't say. She couldn't even give me a month. Inside, it felt more crowded and claustrophobia over warm and cozy. If you're the owner reading this, could you tell me when you start so I can try again? A hidden gem! It's tucked away on a quiet corner, away from the hustle and bustle. The first time I walked by I had no idea it was a wine bar -- I thought it was someone's front yard. It quickly became a favorite of mine. I love going during the day on weekends, ordering an adult lemonade (proseco+lemonade), sitting outside and enjoying a leisurely afternoon. If you go in the colder months, you can enjoy their cozy interior with a fireplace to boot. For food, I usually go for the Tuna Niçoise Salad, in which they use "really expensive canned tuna", ha. It's very good, albeit sometimes a tad too salty. The BLAT sandwich is also yummy. If you're in the mood for sweet, try the Chocolate Bread Pudding. And of course, the wines are delicious! This place has great outdoor seating with comfy patio chairs that recline nicely - a good place to sit and talk and have a drink/snacks. My friend and I shared the salt cod which was sooo good. Love this place so much! I used to go all the time before the pandemic when I lived in Brooklyn, and recently went again and remembered why I used to love it. The ambiance is so cozy, there's a fireplace inside and it's dark with lots of candles. It's also one of the few places you can walk in to before or after dinner on a Friday night. They have a small outdoor patio in the front with a handful of seats and a bonfire. The service is attentive and you can stay for as little or as long as you want. I've tried a handful of their small plates before too and everything was great! You may be able to make a dinner out of it if you order a few things too! read more

I've been here several times and it's one of my favorite wine bars in NYC. It's a small bar but it has a lot of character. The bar is located on a predominantly residential block, with an exterior facade that looks more like a log cabin than a wine bar. They have some outdoor seating and they tend to light fire pits during the colder months. The wine list is pretty extensive for a casual wine bar, with options from all around the world ranging from white, to red, to orange, and more. They also offer small plates if you don't want to drink on an empty stomach. The staff is also very knowledgeable about the wines. I had some questions the last time I was there, and the waiter was patient with me and helped me select something he thought I'd like. This is the type of place you can easily spend hours at without realizing. It's a must-try! read more

Wow what an amazing spot for date night or a casual night of wine. The outdoor seating is amazing especially if the weather is nice. My husband and I loved seating on the wooden chairs with the foot rest. It was such a great vibe drinking wine while relaxing. The selection of wine here is great. The crostini was outstanding, 3 large pieces with warm goat cheese in center capped with a Parmesan crisp. Kudos to chef Francisco. Teryn and Hanna took amazing care of us, and I was amazed at 5pm it was fully packed, but service was never slow. They did their best to accommodate everyone even when there was a line forming. This is such an ideal date spot. Or in my case, it's such an ideal third-wheel spot. I've passed this place numerous times walking over from Gowanus to Park Slope. Its eye grabbing. Its a little log cabin house that looks like it belongs in the mountains or an abandoned forest and has been converted into a wine and cheese night cafe. They even have a cute porch with chairs out front. Wine was pretty affordable. For not being happy hour I could still get an over flowing chalice of Tempranillo for $8. Interesting food menu of cheese and charcuterie platters, mac and cheese with truffle oil, paninis, meatballs, crostini, and tarts. What you would expect at a wine bar. But the ambiance is really nice. I imagine this is great in the winter time and I think they even roar up a fireplace then. Oh, they surprisingly also have a decent bottled beer menu. Any place that sells Samuel Smith oatmeal is doing something pretty right. I also played that game while I was half listening to my couple friends called 'How many of these people are on blind dates and how many of these people are in actual relationships' game. It's a good one. I had passed it many of times, always wondering what it was like inside. Finally one day before I was meeting some friends for dinner nearby, I decided to stop in and check it out before dinner. It's a cute place. Rustic feels for sure. The serve, beer, wine, and non hard liquor cocktails. Their selection of everything is pretty extensive. The prices, aren't awful, but not the greatest. Didn't seem to offer a happy hour and got there when they opened. My one quarrel would be the service. Place wasn't packed at all and two people were working. I have patience for staff, I really do, but this was excessive. I would have happily gotten another round, but eventually I just got the check. Hopefully it was a one time thing. If walking down the residential area of Hoyt street again, I'll be sure to stop in and give it another go. read more

I have been coming here since its first owner...and then after it was bought by one of the waiters. The atmosphere is always cozy...the food is very good for bar snacks and casual fare. Last few years the staff I found to be inattentive even resentful. As a guest I always feel rather unwelcome like I am breaking up a staff party ...they are very engaged with their own conversation or playing with social media on their iPhones. The other night I sat on the bar and waited and waited without attention until I had to break up their conversation behind the bar and ask for service. Then sat and sat after I completed my meal.Put my card down very visible to let it be known that I wanted a check to pay....that went unnoticed too. I still love the place for its upstate cozy vibe but always leave annoyed by the lighting which is way to dim to even read the menu. And the disappointing unwelcoming service.
