Went here for lunch at an awkward time where they gave us menus to order but then when we ordered they said that they only had two options for the next thirty minutes. It was a little weird but we were hungry so we made do. We ordered the burger with fries and the sunchoke arugula with salmon. The burger was really good and the fries were amazing! They were skinny fries but had such a great crunch. The salad was okay. The fish was cooked perfectly with a crispy snappy skin and a tender and flaky fish. The lettuce had a weird flavor combo in my opinion. I think the cheese had this slightly mild funkiness that clashed with whatever dressing was on it but the dressing was also mild so it just tasted mildly weird to me. I have been here many times. I like it but it's not very consistent. First time I had the burger, I was in LOVE. Second and third time, super mediocre. Have had fried chicken here- just okay. Not seasoned well. Salads are good. Brought my family here from England and they were not super impressed. The desserts are also just okay. Marked at $12 each but eh. The fries are the best thing here. Shoestring but fresh and delicious. Service is pretty great. Love the outdoor seating as it's much more quiet than inside which is way too loud. Went to Walter's for brunch today, the menus is small maybe to have a controlled kitchen. I had Latte as I waited for my sister and I will say the beverages there are quality. We came here Sunday for brunch and we were greeted by the most pleasant host and hostess, it was a quick 10minute wait and we were in! Waitress was great too and as soon as we sat down we were handed menus and given water. She was able to switch out my water glass that appeared a little run down making it look dirty. No prob! Food came out quick and hot and most importantly it was banginnn! We had huevo rancheros, chicken and waffles, the kale Caesar salad with anchovies (best part!) and for dessert the key lime pie and a cappuccino. We wouldn't order the key lime again because it didn't quite taste like your typical key lime pie and it was orange hue that we were told was that color because of the eggs. Pretty nice! My only gripe is that they close too early on weeknights in a climate that really needs super late, relaxed dinner. I was there last night at right before closing time, the place had at least 8 tables of people with a good vibe, and I am SURE they could have sold at least another couple rounds of drinks. My second visit here, and don't know why I stayed away so long! We started with the kale ceaser just phenomenal. Moved on to the fried chicken and my date had the steak both were great tooService was busy but attentive enough that you didn't feel ignored. The tables of two are really tight together. Been to Walter's twice and it's quite an interesting place. Nothing out of the ordinary from an ambience perspective. It's cozy and does the job. Has outdoor seating when the weather is better and is near fort Greene park so that's nice. The best thing I've had here honestly are the fries. That's not because of the rest of the food, more so they're just that good. Always crispy and lovely. The burger is a no no for me personally. Felt it was a bit over charred and it loses a lot its flavor while battling the char. The steak sandwich with French onion was quite good actually. I'll definitely have it again and would recommend to someone passing by. The fried chicken wasn't super memorable but was also good. I have a 9 year old review of Walter's Restaurant with Four Stars which means I really liked it. Since that review (nine years ago) I've eaten here 8 - 10 more times. So, after today's lunch, I felt it was time to revamp my older review and update a newer version: I've always used Walter's Restaurant here in Brooklyn, as my last meal on every trip I've taken to New York. And yes, I'm flying back to Chicago this afternoon so, guess where I had lunch was today? I had a rather fantastic DRY-AGED BURGER with lettuce, tomato, pickled onion, sesame bun and really commanding high grade cheddar cheese. I loved it! Least me not forget the really good fries that came with it. Our friend had a SAIGON SANDWICH with grilled chicken breast, jalapeño, pickled veg, cilantro, scallion mayo and he loved it also. My wife had their SALMON RICE BOWL with scallion, tamari glaze, nori, pickled vegetables, furikake that she liked very much. So after so many times I've eaten here in the same booth (BTW) and with the same pictures on the wall of 20 celebrities named "Walter" - like Cronkite, Disney, Barbara and Matthau, this bistro is my East Coast home away from home. I may be from St. Louis, but I know a good french dip when I see one. Walter's french dip is high on my list. I stopped by for lunch and sat at the bar. I, of course, had to get their paloma. It was good. It got the job done for a paloma(I am a paloma snob, it is indeed my death bed cocktail). And, i ordered my french dip. About 45 minutes rolled around and the bar tender handed me the check. I thought this was strange to pay before my meal, but I paid and they told me to have a nice day. I indicated I was still waiting on my food. The bartender was insanely apologetic got one made on the fly for me and even refunded me my meal. An insanely kind gesture he did not need to do. Now, for the flavors. Crispy, salty, shoestring fries: a masterclass. If you do not like shoestring fries it is time to grow up. Walter's fries are pictured in Merriam Webster's when you search for 'perfection'. The wagyu french dip is dang near perfection as well. The baguette is an important component to a french dip. This baguette is superb. And, it is even charred, a touch I have never seen before. I have seen toasted, but not charred like this. As any good baguette, the baguette is crunchy on the crust, but once you penetrate that protective exterior the bread is airy and soft. Horseradish, tender beef, and gruyere all work together to elevate this french dip. A little salty, a little creamy, and rich with the au jus. Walter's will be one of the meals I miss the most leaving New York. Bravo. read more

We came to Walter's as a party of 2 on a Friday night without a reservation. I got a mango lemonade with vodka at the bar while we waited for a table. It was more mango on the front end and vodka on the back with less lemon flavor, but I love mango so I was happy. Once seated, we ordered the artichoke dip, French dip, and short rib bucatini. I am not used to seeing tomato as part of the base of an artichoke dip, but it added just the right amount of acidity without upstaging the artichoke. We enjoyed it, though it came with a very toasted baguette that we agreed would have paired better with the dip lightly toasted. Both our entrees were delicious. I was deciding between 2 entrees and asked the waitress which one she recommended and she said that the short rib bucatini was relatively new but a big hit. I now understand why. It was so good. The restaurant is a somewhat small space and our table was between the bar, front door, and a wall of windows. While eating this was no problem, but it was uncomfortably tight leaving the table at the end of the meal due to people standing around the bar. While I wish people would not be allowed to hang out between the bar stools and the tables in that one spot, it was otherwise a great time. Nice service too, so I recommend Walter's. read more

Walter's is a Fort Greene, neighborhood gem. Since moving into Fort Greene almost, twelve years ago we have eaten at Walter's too many times to count. The staff is very attentive, kind and welcoming. I love the cozy atmosphere and, the food keeps us coming back. Without a reservation, the wait for a table can be long. That only speaks to the loyalty, good food, service that you receive when dining at Walter's. I love starting with the oysters. The burgers are delicious - juicy and so tasty. The fries are crispy, thin and addictive. One of favorites is their the Wagyu French Dip sandwich. Served with caramelized onions, a lovely horseradish cream, au jus with Gruyère cheese on a delicious baguette. The fried chicken is crispy and flavorful on the outside and tender in the inside. Just what really good fried chicken should be! Served with one of my all-time favor, comfort foods, garlic, mashed potatoes. We will be back again and again, that's a given. This is a cute place. I wish they had more restrooms as there's only one for the entire place for all genders. The line is fairly long because of that reason. Just be wary of it. I wish I could've made it to their happy hour, but perhaps next time. We chose this place as it is close to BAM. There are different menus for each time, such as lunch, brunch, happy hour, and dinner. Service wise, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Anyway, I ordered the fried chicken, which came with garlic mashed potatoes, bacon gravy, and spicy honey. The mashed potatoes were really good. However, the chicken was a bit on the drier side. I wouldn't order the chicken again. I tried the mussels and fries from my friends' dishes, which was alright, but nothing special. We took our daughter and her roommates out to brunch last Saturday. It was nice to have a reservation for the six of us at a booth given how small the place is. The service was terrific and the ambiance comfy and cute. The standout item overall was the fries - thin shoestring potatoes and fresh and hot and delicious! We ordered a third serving because the first two disappeared so quickly! Several of us ordered the eggs benedict, one plain (which means just the poached eggs, no canadian bacon), one with salmon, one with grilled tomato. For my plain eggs benedict: 3/5 - overall dish was not very tasty Ordered a side of bacon: 5/5, well done bacon, five slices I think which is a very generous side serving. I wish I had ordered the bacon earlier so I could add it to the eggs benedict. Each of the main dishes included hash browns, but these hash browns were not crispy, and the flavoring was what we all agreed was a bit weird, we left behind a lot of these hash browns which looked more like mushy diced breakfast potatoes. The cheeseburger of which I had a bite: 4/5, tasty! Cute place, I'd go back just for the fries and consider ordering a sandwich or burger to go with it next time! read more

The atmosphere is good for a group gathering or a nice catch up but the music is loud that you need to shout a bit over to your friends in order to hear. The steak frite was good - the fries were nice and crispy and the chimichurri sauce was DELICIOUS. Without the sauce, the dish wouldn't have been amazing. We had calamari which was okay - at least crispy and not soggy (not too flavorful). Also had the beef tartare which was delicious! My partner ordered the Caesar salad and I had the roast chicken. My chicken was tasty (the mash potatoes were also good) but my partners salad was disappointing. Lacked flavour and just not prepared as expected, he actually commented that he had better salads from some local bars. We ended the meal with coconut cream pie, which was tasty but very sweet and I couldn't finish. All in all we enjoyed our meal at Walter's but wouldn't say it was a stand out. Super cute neighborhood restaurant that's dog friendly! We stopped in for a weekend brunch and quickly got a table in the heated and covered patio. Walter's is one of those cute looking place along DeKalb ave across from Fort Greene park. Super cute inside and outside. But no air conditioning? We had the shrimp cocktail, the steak frites and the roast chicken. The shrimp cocktail was awesome! Really good and well seasoned. The steak was solid. We ordered it medium and the cook was great in that respect. But we got it with the au poivre sauce and I felt it was missing that fresh peppercorn intensity of a good au poivre. The chicken was just fine. First, they don't brown the skin enough so the chicken comes out very very pale. The lightest shade of brown a chicken skin could be. Second, other than the skin on top, the chicken itself was without much flavor. Even the jus was bland. They give you lemon to squeeze over top, which helps, but this thing desperately needed salt and other seasonings. All in all, great place to go before going to Barclays or BAM. read more

A pretty underrated brunch spot. Fell upon Walter's after going to farmer's market a few steps from the restaurant. The restaurant was pretty packed on Saturday (took a ten minute wait). The oyster was what I started my meal with. And they were fresh and shucked nicely. Their Chicken and Waffles should be a must have. Their recipe and method is the way to go. The waffles are crispy and light and airy inside. The fried chicken was to die for. Seasoned well and lightly battered. Wasn't heavy and greasy like most places. The staff messed up on the bill but corrected it quickly and reimbursed an item for the confusion. My only nitpick is that indoor dining seating is very tight. read more

This was a delightful brunch spot that we stumbled upon on a neighborhood walk. It was busy, but easy to get a table on a Sunday around 12:30pm. To eat, I had the huevos rancheros. The dish was very tasty and hearty, especially with the hash browns. The flavors were light, but I enjoyed it.
