Wow, I was somewhat nervous to come because it seemed pretty western themed which is not my vibe. But, I got some tips from local bartenders, and I can admit I was quick to judge. First of all, Grand army is not overly western/country. A great balance of feeling like a throwback bar with some classic country elements. The back bar feels vintage and rustic. Both bartenders had on overalls. But, in a hipster, contemporary way. The bar tenders were great. Great conversations and incredible attention to detail. But, they would not give me their mint syrup recipe which is unlike any I have ever seen. Their mint syrup is a deep green with some ground mint in there. Grand army: if you are willing to share your secrets let me know. Both drinks I have were great: the national barn dance and gully jumper. The gully jumper being the clear favorite, and a top 5 I had on my trip. Both rum and gin blend perfectly with the mint, pineapple, and peppercorn. Tiki-esque, but still sophisticated. I kept getting notes of black licorice--which I hate--but it was so amazing. This one is a crusher got sure. Absolutely a perfected cocktail. The national barn dance was also solid. The supporting cast of watermelon and passionfruit were much more subtle, but still good. The mezcal definitely shined through. I wish I would've grabbed a shirt as their merch is really solid. As for the vibes: super casual. Nothing pretentious. It is a soot where everyone feels like they belong. I love that. Fun, whimsical, and well branded. I am guilty of being so comfortable and familiar with grand army now that I have rarely taken pictures of our food and drinks there. This is our local neighborhood spot we love visiting. Comfortable, always the best service, freshest seafood and tasty cooked dishes. Their rotating selection of cocktails is always top notch, even the NA drinks. Our typical order is the Low Brow Tower, Bread, Crispy Potatoes. If there's a special sandwich or something we'll almost certainly order that too. So happy to have this place in our neighborhood! This place is a replacement for gathom burger for those who don't know. First thing about this place, it's terrible! Music is SO loud (not exaggerating), food taste terrible, sauce on the burger was terrible, and to make things better, you could've gotten better toppings at mcdonald's. to make things EVEN WORSE, I ordered fries and for some reason got a mixture of cajun fries and normal fries. This was my first time here and I would definitely come back. I went on Thursday evening and it was pretty busy but able to get a table right away. Only did small bites, popcorn and the deviled eggs. Everything was perfect. Friendly staff when I walked in the door. Nathan found me a solo spot at the bar. The bartender, Pepper, was absolutely lovely and nice to chat with. The food was delicious. I got two each of the three oyster varieties they had. And the scallops with coconut risotto were amazing and cooked to perfection. I loved the wine as well. The red from Languedoc had amazing spice and depth of flavor. I also loved the white from Spain - the epitome of crispness. Another cute thing the do is to rotate their cocktail menu themes. This particular menu was cat themed. They also make merch to go along with each theme. I'm also happy to see that they are part of the Billion Oyster Project. I will definitely be back! read more

The thing about here is that they make the menu fun enough to want to come back constantly. It's the type of creativity that, even if I come across a miss (which is super rare), it's only on the menu temporarily and I can swing by again and try something completely different. From the cat menu, the game show menu, the spice girls menu, I just can't wait to see what they have cooked up for the holiday months. This is everything I want from a bar. Went around DT Brooklyn and stumbled across this gem, have been biking by and noticed the energy and vibes were on point. Decided to check it out one gloomy summery day and was not disappointed. Stopped by Grand Army for a drink and oysters before heading out into the evening! Grand Army is a eye-catching neighborhood spot with cool vibes. Because it was a Friday night, we snagged a seat in their outdoor structure, which was decorated really nicely and definitely a step up from the other street structures that are really just plastic siding. The vibe inside was cozy and sweet. I loved the illustrated cat menus too. I'm blanking on the name of the cocktails we ordered, but the drinks were very well made. Not too strong, not too weak, very well crafted and nicely mixed. We also ordered 8 oysters to share and they were delightful. We preferred the Baby Brielle oysters over the Kusshi ones if anybody is wondering! As other reviewers have mentioned, however, the prices at Grand Army are a bit high even for New York standards. Definitely a spot worth trying if you're looking to grab a drink or perhaps try some oysters, but wouldn't hurry back given the many other spots offering the same for a bit less. read more

Went here expecting to eat dinner and turned out to be more light apps and cocktails than I thought. The menu online did not match menu at restaraunt. I hate when that happens because I plan what I want to eat, and then my plans are all messed up! The food is good don't get me wrong but its just not a satisifying dinner. We had the bread and butter which was amazing, great tasting bread and the seasoned butters it came with had great flavor as well. Then we had the seafood charcuterie. All seafood no meat like the name, but they smoked the compilation of fishes to taste like meat and even put shrimp in a casing like sausage. Very good again, but not filling at all and expensive. We ordered the goat cheese brulee which took the longest to come out for some reason, and was legit just a huge wedge of goat cheese carmelized on top. Tasted very good though but way too much cheese since they only gave us 2 bread crisps to eat it with. We had to ask for more bread. So mostly our dinner consisted of bread. Saw a lot of people ordering oysters and they do have a happy hour where the ones from Virginia are 1 dollar a piece. We are not oyster eaters though. We wanted to try something we saw on thier online menu that's why we went there and then they didn't have it... Cocktails are every good. A lot are very smokey. Went to Grand Army for a late lunch, early dinner on Sunday afternoon. A cool space with delicious food, but a tad overpriced, even for high-quality seafood. Quality: We had a great meal at Grand Army, and the only thing that holds me back from praising it more is that it felt very expensive. We started with a round of cocktails, which they had themed after Nicolas Cage. I had Willy's Wonderland, a frozen iced coffee with mezcal and amaro, while my girlfriend selected Snake Eyes with mezcal, lime, coconut water, and banana. Later in the meal I also ordered Johnny Blaze with tequila, lime, habanero, and ginger. Well thought out and tasty drinks, the frozen one being my favorite. We also got the Happy Hour Dozen Oysters, which are delicious and a solid deal, especially compared to the usually $4/oyster price. Next out were the okay Deviled Eggs and the disappointing Bread, both far too expensive. The Fluke Ceviche was very good and I highly recommend the dish. I was also happy with the Octopus, which was served raw, but avoided that tough, rubbery texture. The King Crab was a fun dish, served in a corn queso fundido style. Inventive food concepts, but everything with a high price tag. Quantity: The dishes are small, but not surprising for fresh seafood. Be careful as most items are expensive and a few dishes quickly add up. Value: $16 for Summer Cocktails. $25 for Happy Hour Dozen Oysters. $16 for the Deviled Eggs. $15 for the Fluke Ceviche. $15 for the Bread. $22 for the Octopus. $32 for the King Crab. Ambiance: Grand Army occupies a quaint little corner space that has been able to take full advantage of open streets. They have about a dozen tables in the street, several under awnings near the building, and then an elaborate structure, which may be nicer than inside. The area that is part of open streets is very lively, as the other restaurants in the area have also spread out, but I preferred the area along the quieter residential street. Shaded and lush, it was beautiful even on a hot day. I only peeked inside, but it looked like they had a bunch of tables as well as a sizable bar area. The music was Lauryn Hill from the moment we sat down until we left. Crowd: We arrived as soon as they opened on Sunday in order to take advantage of happy hour oysters. While the first to arrive, it did not take long for the majority of seats to be filled, inside and out. Service: The staff was great. They were extremely attentive, happy to share suggestions, and authentic in the love of the neighborhood filled with dogs. Parking: Tough to find street parking in the area. read more

I've been twice and I really enjoy the intimate atmosphere. It's a beautiful little gem and has delicious drinks, though the cocktails are pricey. They're made very well though. I know they also have an oyster happy hour which is a bonus for a lot of people (but not me). Good service, clean spot, will go back. I'd prefer not to sit on backless bar stools but that's how they get you in and out quicker. And if that's my only complaint then they're doing fine! read more

Grand Army would be the perfect location for a go-to restaurant/bar for me, as I live a mere two blocks away. Unfortunately I cannot justify coming here often, as there is a lack of bang relative to the amount of bucks one has to drop during an ordinary outing here. Pro: the charcuterie board is delicious. Consisting of four unique items such as octopus terrine, trout rillette, and others, the flavors are excellent and nicely contrast one another. Con: above-mentioned board, while only an appetizer, is nearly $30 and really leaves you craving more food for that dollar mark. Pro: dollar oysters at happy hour, woo! One night the oysters were even Wellfleets, which are reliable. Con: the most recent time I had said oysters, they tasted fishy and quite slimy. Yuck. Pro: lovely decor and overall cool space, on a beautiful street. I do love when my girlfriend and I can snag a seat at the front window when it's light out. Con: the place gets absolutely jammed to the point where I simply wouldn't dare test my anxiety levels by walking in. Also, being on State St results in elevated price points across the menu. So overall I have mixed feelings about Grand Army. There are parts of it that I love (the bread and butter appetizer is actually outstanding), but certain aspects keep me walking past far more often than not. read more

We did a reservation for 7:15 today (in resy they don't have an outdoor vs indoor option anymore, and we preferred outdoor seating ) the restaurant was empty and the approach of this guy was horrible (like so you know, I can make an exception but you have to be aware that we can't do this, if you make a reservation we decide where you are going to be seated and you have to accept that so is the last time that you mess up with the reservations) important to highlight outdoors and indoors seating were pretty empty all the time we were there. Ah, Grand Army. I live a block away, and I've been inside your gorgeous space five or six times now, and I still don't know how to articulate how I feel in an overarching sense. So I'm going to do that thing where people break up the review into its main components, mostly because the elements of this bar are pretty disparate. If you don't want to listen to me babble on and on, there's a TL; DR at the end. Cocktails. Let's start with the good. Your cocktails are uniformly excellent. I've ordered off the menu, I've ordered off-menu, and I've never been sad. There's no vodka-shaming when my wife wants a martini, and even when you incorporate ingredients I'm not necessarily fond of, the overall effect has been balanced and quite tasty. The Bosses' Cabinet in particular has always been a good decision, especially since it's a rotating cocktail that is always a slightly more affordable $11 (to the standard $13). I would love to complain about that pricing in general, but that's pretty much just what good cocktails cost these days. Do I wish they were more affordable, so that I could be a regular? Of course. Do I wonder who could pay that much for cocktails regularly? Yes. But then again, you're on the same block as $4.5 million townhouses...and I'm betting whoever lives there can handle it. Food. The oysters have always been fresh, and when you come in for happy hour, $1 apiece is a welcome price point. (Actually paying MP? I'm not going to do that because I futilely dream of one day having one of those townhouses.) Some may find it too cutesy, but I actually appreciate the eyedroppers of different sauces; I like the variety of a little bit of jerk on this one, a little bit of ponzu on that one, or the standard mignonette or cocktail sauce...all in exact amounts that I decide. I do usually go sans sauce with fresh oysters anyway, but options are nice. Unfortunately, none of the other food particularly appeals to me. I've tried a few of the "larger" plates, some of the raw bar, and I've had all the breads (formerly known as the fancy toasts), and I didn't find any to be worth revisiting. They tend to be prettier than they are tasty, and that kills me. I was sure I'd love the breads, too, as with such a small menu you expect them to be carefully curated, but it hasn't happened yet. Perhaps their food is just not my style, but living so close I wish it was. Service. Uneven. My bearded bartender friend, I believe his name is Damon, is great. He's generally friendly, obviously well-versed in the art of booze, and he's a pleasure to watch. No wasted motion in his game.* Unfortunately, some of the table service has ranged from just fine to inexplicably rude to painfully awkward (twice I've seen a teenager working, and he dropped silverware and flushed/cringed so hard I hurt for him). It's also a bummer when I come by for a nightcap an hour before they ostensibly close, and I'm turned away. I understand that folks are just trying to get home though, and I suppose I can save some money and drink my own booze. But my cocktails (usually consisting of liquor and ice) aren't nearly as tasty. All in all, I will continue to come back for oysters and cocktails. And I'll keep trying the food as well, because I want to update this review. I want to be a regular. I want to love Grand Army. And I hope it happens. We went here tonight to get a quick cocktail today after having brunch outside. We are seriously paranoid about Covid, but it was freezing and we just wanted one more drink. Initially we hoped to sit outside, but it was a 30 minute wait, so we risked indoor dining (drinking) for the first time since March. I was so unbelievably impressed with the protocols they took to keep their staff safe. We were required to put our masks on when the staff approached, and they recommended we keep it on when we were not eating/drinking. While I know many people find these rules to be restrictive, I applaud any business that goes the extra mile to keep their staff safe. Yeah, you want to keep your patrons safe, but the risk to the employees of these businesses is so high, and it's great to see this being addressed. I shared a dozen oysters, my favorite part were the different sauces which come in little droplet vials which allows for great precision when applying to your oysters. Also shared the "seafood charcuterie." which was alright. the best thing in there by far was the smoked trout dip. Other items has somewhat strange texture. Small portions. I have been to Grand Army a couple of times now, which is no surprise considering I live a block away. The decor is very hipster chic and easy on the eyes, with fun posters and random collections of trinkets occupying various corners. The staff is friendly and attentive. Food menu is not very long, but changes periodically. The cocktails and oysters are the real stars here. Daily Happy Hour is all about the $1 oysters - one type of oyster will be marked down from about $3.50 to $1, which obviously is a much better deal. I love the unique flavor infusions that come with the oysters, like taco and smoked cucumber. The drink deals during the happy hour are really nothing to write home about - just $1 off all glasses of wine and draft beers. Truth be told, the food prices are a bit high for the tiny portion size. However, I do feel like the quality is there, which leaves me feeling slightly better when signing the check. The seafood charcuterie board is a favorite of mine, mostly for the smoked trout spread (which I swore to my boyfriend I would attempt to replicate at home) and the shrimp sausage. There's no doubt in my mind that I am on my way to becoming a Grand Army regular. Can't wait to see this place in the winter with their cozy little fireplace going. read more
