Lucky Charlie's was one of those meals that really sticks with you. I had very high expectations coming in, and they absolutely delivered. One of the coolest parts of the experience was getting to see the coal-burning oven downstairs, built into the foundation of the building in 1890. Knowing that everything coming out of the kitchen is being cooked in that oven makes the whole experience even more unique. I started with a glass of Barolo, then tried the "From the Sea," which is limited to only six orders per day. It comes with oysters Rockefeller, clams casino, shrimp oreganata and charred octopus, and everything on the platter was fantastic. The octopus especially had a beautiful char while still being incredibly tender. The Classic Pizza was the highlight for me. Fior di latte, DOP San Marzano tomato sauce, Pecorino Sardo, Sicilian olive oil and 40-month Parmigiano Reggiano. The coal oven gives the crust such a great crisp and flavor, and this honestly became one of my personal favorite pizzas in New York. It's the kind of pie you just keep reaching for. The housemade cannelloni with ricotta, sausage and marinara was also excellent, and we finished with another pizza split between sausage and peppers and cup-and-char pepperoni. Both sides were delicious. Between the history, the atmosphere, the quality of the ingredients and what that coal oven does to the food, Lucky Charlie's is a place I would absolutely go back to. Easily one of the most memorable meals I've had in Brooklyn and a spot I'd highly recommend. read more

I am so glad I was "finally" able to get to Lucky Charlie! *from the sea, limit 6 per day. We were the first customers! My situation is different, I work in Brooklyn and live in the 'burbs. At 2pm I'm looking at Waze! Lucky Charlie opens at 5pm during the week so it's been tough to plan. I see all these social media postings, it looks like people are having some fun in Bushwick! Well, the stars aligned and we were able to be the first customers last Sunday. That means I immediately placed the order for *from the sea: Two Oyster Rockefeller Two Clams Casino Shrimp Organata Charred Octopus This is why I was planning to get here before the restaurant opened. Fantastic is how I would best describe this dish. I've had charred octopus at Hellas in Tampa which was our standard. The cook on the octopus was better, it's the best I ever had. Lucky Charlie looks like a very old Brooklyn joint. A place where you'd order a Miller High Life from the bar after work. Now add the fact they turned up the oldest coal oven in existence, this is truly a one of a kind spot. Take for instance the classic pizza. The pizza was so unique, made DOP San Marzano sauce and topped with aged parmigiano reggiano, it's finished in the coal oven to create a master class, thin crust pizza. A pizza that's made not too far where I grew up. From the great Negroni Cocktail to the amazing pizza, you want to try everything on the Lucky Charlie menu. read more

Walked in at around 6 PM on a holiday Friday and there was no wait for 2. Little gem Caesar was tasty, though some pieces were a little watery. Classic pizza with half pepperoni half anchovy was solid - pepperoni was my favorite. Tiramisu was great. Overall it's a nice neighborhood spot, but not a destination pizza place / I wouldn't wait a long time to get in. read more

Place is incredible from Brady to Trey to Nino. This is the place to be after hours. $5 beer shot combos to pizzas. Come here and call it a night. One of the best places around for late night drinks. The pizza is fantastic as is the crowd. The people are an ecelctic mix of hipsters and visitors. I will say that the staff really make everyone feel welcome. Do yourself a favor come and try some of the best pizza around in NYC but stay for the drinks, the people and the ambiance. Worth trying for sure! read more

I stopped by Lucky Charlie on a Saturday and got to try some fantastic coal fired pizza. I loved the one that had the stripes of sauce on top but they were all really crisp and delicious. Incredible pizza, definitely one of the better spots I've had. We split a pizza, half cheese and half pepperoni/sausage. The cheese was the best version of it for sure, but the meat side was also delicious. We also got a nonna salad, which was lovely. Absolutely no complaints, the service was great and we were able to walk in and get a table. Would for sure recommend! read more

Not bad. I had the red pie with mushrooms and peppers. The crust was crispy and chewy, and the sauce was robust without being too sweet. I'd probably prefer to get the classic next time to add a bit more cheese. The only drawback is that the crust was a little too dark for my taste, almost burnt in a few spots at the edge. The cost worked out to around $41 after tax and tip, and the size of the pizza is good for two. read more

Walk in only. We went around 5p on a Saturday, were quoted 20 mins it maybe took closer to 30/40? No big deal though - they will give you a drink menu and you can sit outside while you wait. Menu isn't huge but it is delish! Cool vibe in there too. We went w the bread service, antipasto, and classic pizza. Almost wish we got another pie it was so good. read more

This was the absolute best pizza I have ever tasted. It may even be better than Lucali . Hard to get into my advice go when it opens or really late. We waited over an hour even with a reservation. It's a tiny little restaurant worth the hype. Shocked Barstools hasn't been to this one. I can't wait to go back. Ceasar salad gems were delicious we ordered two more for the table. The white garlic confit pie is to die for. I suggest trying the traditional Margherita pie first bc the white is strong and you won't want anything else. Both pasta dishes were excellent. Also the tiramisu was best I ever tasted. I also hate tiramisu so that says a lot about it ! Order ahead they run out. A new Favorite!! read more

Lucky Charlie must be on everyone's map, given how packed out this restaurant becomes on a Saturday evening around 8:30. I don't know if they take reservations, but you had better have reservations or get there early Thursday through Sunday to have any chance to be seated at this restaurant. When I strolled up, there were people standing outside and many others were seated on fold up lawn chairs and benches to wait for their orders to take home or eat the pizza right out of the box on the spot. I had thought about my order in advance and required little time to decide when Francesca took my order. I ordered the Classic with pepperoni on one half, sausage on the other half, and onions all over. I also ordered the Caesar salad to go. Francesca stated it would take a while and would text me when it was ready, adding I should visit one of the nearby bars to wait it out. She was on point and I followed her cue. When I returned, not only did she wrap my pizza so it could fit in my backpack, but also directed me to a few of her favorite spots for wings. If you read this Francesca, thanks for the pointers. The wings and scene were great at your rec and you earn all the tips people give you in front of Lucky Charlie. The pizza was great. Thin leopard spotted crust and quality ingredients on top. I wish they were a bit more generous with the ingredients topping the pizza, but it may become too heavy on that thin crust. I can see traveling from other boroughs for this pizza. Don't ignore their Caesar Salad. I ordered that to go as well and it is excellent. Fresh whole Romaine lettuce and all the makings for the Caesar dressing and generous cheese grated on top. I imagine anyone who has ordered the Caesar's salad orders it on repeat thereafter. If one could dine in, a glass of red wine would accent and accompany everything nicely. Dining in would surely make for a more sophisticated experience. Keep up the good work Francesca. Four quality stars! read more

Lucky Charlie - A slice of the pepperoni half straight out of my oven at home. - Pizza Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Lucky Charlie is absolutely freaking phenomenal. They don't take reservations, you're going to be waiting a ridiculously long time, you're going to wonder "is it really worth a 2 and a half hour wait?!." I'll help you out: yes it 1000% is. This place knows what's up. From the drinks to the salad the main star: the pizza? It's absolutely a grand slam. The sauce and crust on the pizza are delicious. The crust is charred on the bottom with the perfect coal fire crisp you get in an amazing New Haven slice, the ends are soft and cloudy for the perfect bite of the best of a New York slice. The sausage and pepperoni are top quality, and the size is extremely generous. We got there at 6 PM on a Saturday and waited in the front area for about 2 hours enjoying their delicious cocktails and chatting with the owner Nino. The owner and the entire staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and efficient--maintaining a great vibe even when you could see how packed and busy the place was constantly. My hat is off to this place--I cannot recommend enough and can't wait to come back. read more

Stopped in at 5pm on a Saturday and got lucky having no line. We started with the bread service, and while it wasn't cheap, it was worth it. The focaccia was so soft and flavorful and the dips were all phenomenal (ok, maybe not the anchovy butter, but that's more of a personal taste issue). But the pizza. WOW. After the first bite it immediately vaulted into my top 3 with Lucali and Una Pizza, and if you know NY pizza, you know just how high that praise is. The crust had the perfect coal oven char, an excellent crisp, nice crunch, and no flop. The cheese to sauce ratio was spot on and the flavors melded perfectly - you can really taste the pecorino grated across the top. Absolutely top tier pizza. The homemade shirley temple and ginger ale were also excellent. Will definitely be back, and likely frequently, for the easiest to access top tier pizza in NYC. read more

I take pizza seriously and Lucky Charlie's blew me away. The Classic pie was everything I need pizza to be. Their basement based coal oven produces a crust with crunch and endurance. The marinara's savory with a hint of sweetness. And the cheese: 10/10. No notes. My friend and I also shared the Nonna salad. It was the perfect complement to the pie. I wish I had had the space to try more of their menu options. Next time! Veronica, our server, couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. Everyone was friendly and kind. My husband and I really enjoyed our date night at Lucky Charlie. We arrived about 6pm on a Saturday evening, and were quoted 2 hours - put our name down and went to a nearby bar to grab a drink. Luckily, it only took a little over an hour before we got the phone call and we're seated! The space inside is cute and intimate, definitely a buzzy kind of feel. Menu is pretty tight but all looked good. Since it was just the two of us, we opted to share a pizza over some cocktails. Cocktails were great and creative. I liked the coca cola espresso martini I got! There was a little bit of a wait for the pizza, which I wasn't super surprised about given how busy it was, but it was so worth it! The cheese blend on the white pizza was fantastic, and toppings delightful as well. Crust perfectly crunchy and great structural integrity overall. Definitely coming back!!! read more

Lucky Charlie - pepperoni - Pizza Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Even though the food is not perfect, everything about what I experienced here tonight adds the extra star to make for a close to perfect dining experience. The restaurant is on the cozy side, and yes, the crooners blaring at you quite loudly will have you putting cotton balls in your ears, but once you take a seat inside, and start enjoying yourself, nothing else will matter. Since I was a party of one (what else is new?), I was brought in pretty quickly and seated at the bar. That is fine for what I expect. At least I was told this and not thrown there like an afterthought. They also have hangers underneath the bar to hang jackets. The interior of the restaurant feels something out of Goodfellas meets A Bronx Tale. I brought this to the attention of the bartender, Rob. He agreed and said that was the motif of the entire restaurant. Cool. More on Rob later. To get a full experience I ordered not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE items. Do not tell me I did not give this restaurant a fair shake. As pizza can be shaky, I got their homemade ginger ale. It is delicious and not too overbearing. I saved this for my food and I am happy I did. It set my dinner up beautifully. First timers are suggested to get a pasta dish with the pizza so get a good idea of how this restaurant works. I did and ordered the Cannelloni. I got it with sausage and it worked terrific. The sausage is porky with rocking fennel and the cheese is rich. It is all served in an authentic clay bowl, so it stays hot for quite some time. Had I not ordered pizza this would be just fine, but I showed restraint and took a few bites, knowing the best was yet to come. As this is a coal-fired pizzeria, I know it takes a short time for pies to cook. Within minutes of my pasta dish arriving, the pizza arrives. Both pies. They look sharp and vibrant. Taking a bite, I immediately was transplanted back to the 1920's. This is the kind of pizza they serve at Totonno's. A crackling crust, a little sweet tomato sauce, rich cheese, and a touch of garlic on the white. I even took some sausage from my Cannelloni and added it to one of my pies. It created an amazing treat. Since the pies are fairly light, I knew I could polish them both easily, but decided to keep some for a later date to box them up. The problem with a coal-fired pizza is while you get the soot on your hands, and a nice char on the crust of the generations of pies before yours, the pie cools fast. From the time it hits the table, the clock is ticking before the pizza gets ice cold. As a result, the pizza will taste more gummy, chewy and raw as time passes. Take note of this when you want more than one pie. I felt I had to do it justice and get some dessert. Of course, the tiramisu was calling my name. It comes in a nice jar and tastes terrific. Rich flavors, so creamy, so sweet. This was a real treat. Before I wrapped up, Rob (who took notice of my experience) offered me a parting shot of Italian liqueur as a thank you. Rob was another great addition. He was friendly and attentive and on his game despite the busy atmosphere. He knew how to keep me and everyone at the bar happy and was incredibly confident in the product. That is how you bartend people. Before I left, I waved a pretty amount for him to take, since he really earned it that night. It also helps this restaurant is a short walk from the Knickerbocker Ave station on the M train. Do not let the Latino storefronts fool you. That is just Bushwick being Bushwick. After all, there are Bushwick vibes in this nostalgic pizzeria, which really stands out in an area when it clearly should not. Overall pizza rating: 3.9/5 read more

Some places deserve their proverbial "flowers," and Lucky Charlie is one of those spots. I stumbled across them on Instagram, and realized they are not far from my route home to Glendale, so had to check them out. Be forewarned - this style of pizza isn't for everyone. If you want the traditional big, floppy New York slice of pizza, this place isn't for you - although, I think you still may enjoy it. If you like coal oven, "New Haven" style thin crust pizza, where you order a couple of pies for the table to share, this place is right up your alley, as it was mine. The pizza was remarkable, and a breath of fresh air compared to the plentiful generic slice shops New York has to offer on ever three blocks. The sauce was flavorful, the parmesan cheese was present - but not overwhelming, and the toppings were outstanding. I enjoyed the sausage - which was properly crumbled, as it should be as a pizza topping. The pies aren't particularly "cheap," but I do think you get a good value. The happy hour and affordable prices on beer and shots more than makes up for it. I felt the service was superb, and theu turned tables fairly quickly for a spot that got very busy on a Friday night. I definitely see myself coming back here in the not too distant future. A great addition to the area. read more

Amazing new spot! From accomplished pizzaiolo Nina Coniglio, who started Williamsburg Pizza and has his own spot in Jersey, this is a great dinner option now in Bushwick. Utilizing one of the oldest coal ovens in existence, they're cranking out incredible pies, but they also have so much other good food to try too. Start with the bread service, which comes with the fluffiest, tastiest focaccia, along with a few salads. Order both pastas too before you get into the top-notch pies. I'd rate Lucky Charlie three and a half stars. Old school style bar and pizzeria. Lucky Charlie boasts having the oldest coal oven in the world. Fun features in the restroom too with a toilet with an overhead tank and pulley as well as powdered soap. Full bar with a solid wine list. Interesting list of house cocktails. I had a mezcal based one with grapefruit. I think it was an ode to a mezcal margarita. We started with the a summer salad with watermelon, arugula, tomatoes, and balsamic vinaigrette. A simple yet crowd pleasing salad. We shared the classic pie. It's a thin New Haven style crust. Ultra thin undercarriage with a very crispy cornicone. Mild char. Personally, I prefer other styles like Neapolitan with more chewy crusts, so it's hard to give a neutral opinion of the pizza. Great toppings with a delicious sauce, fresh mozzarella, and a bold shredded pecorino. Service was attentive and helpful. Pacing of the food was on point. There was one restroom which was single occupancy. read more

The pizza here was amazing. Its like an old school NY pie, kind of like Lombardis but with shredded cheese, and its alot better. We got a pepperoni and garlic pie. Crust was crispy, light and chewy.
