I love Bernie's. I classic, super popular spot in Brooklyn...but never acts too good for anyone and always tries their best to make room for any visitors. I had such a fun time here. Granted, I mostly came for some pre-gaming activities before going into midtown Manhattan, so I don't have any personal experience with the food here, but from as far as I can share, I had an amazing time when it came to the drinks and vibes. Finally made it to Bernie's after lots of pre-planning and strategizing the line, and I'm annoyed to report that it's as good as everyone says it is. Came here on a Saturday and started waiting at around 3:30 pm. There was already a decent line, so I was getting a little nervous at this point. We were able to grab bar seats when the place opened at 4 pm, which were fine. Ambiance is old school with lots of wood. Our bartender was great and really on the ball. He took care of us right away and took the time to explain the menu to us and make recommendations. I ordered a dirty martini with blue cheese olives which really hit the spot. We started out with baked clams and mozzarella sticks. The backed clams were 10/10, mozzarella was good but honestly I would skip these next time to make room for the main attractions. I got the chicken piccata which was delicious, sauce was incredible, chicken was pounded and breaded expertly. We also had the eggplant parm which was well constructed, red sauce was everything it should be and nothing else. It's walk-in so be prepared for a wait, especially if you're going during the peak time or weekend. We came back around the expected time that we would be able to get seated, and we were seated outside. My friend and I ended up sharing the Caesar salad, onion rings, and their popular chicken Parm over two dirty vodka martinis. It was absolute perfection. We ate every last bite. The Caesar salad was perfectly dressed and tangy, and the chicken Parm was decadent. The onion rings were not at all greasy and were crisp on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. I got lucky one night when there was no line & my girlfriend and I got a seat. To start off, the ambiance is rock solid, they got the classic old school American/ New York look. Beautiful lights, a sky line art work, comfy leather seats, and you can scribble on the table I love it. Staff & service are also amazing, there very attentive, respectful, friendly and the service is great, they do a great job in both of these aspects. However, their food is lacking. It's a very small menu, we ordered their burger, clams, wedge salad and Sunday. All of the items were fine, I personally didn't like the clams, I felt they were too dry, the burger was good but nothing you can't get anywhere else. The salad and Sunday weren't worth it. However, what was very disappointing, I believe they cook using cheap oils, because after our meal, my girlfriend & I just felt really bad in our stomach. A classic, walk-in only spot for a reason. Bernie's hits the mark with American comfort food. Came here on a Monday with a friend. Arriving at around 6:30 pm there was plenty of outdoor tables still (probably because it was chilly and there's no outdoor heaters) but inside was completely full. We managed to snag the last two seats at the window, which I was very grateful for. For food my friend and I opted to share a few dishes: - The wedge salad: a hunk of lettuce with lots of sauce and a slab of bacon draped over the top, it definitely looks like a work of art. It also tastes delicious, would recommend. - Onion rings: Crispy and one of the better renditions of onion rings I've had in a while. Would recommend as well. - Burger with fries: Apparently you can choose to swap out the fries for onion rings if you so choose, but we kept the fries (and the fries were excellent so I'm glad we did). I finally made it to the much-beloved Bernie's, which despite the crowds around the bar and hour long waits seems to have maintained some of the simplistic coziness - paired with well-executed eats - that caused it to rise to fame. By some twist of fate I've been eating a lot of eggplant Parmesan as of late, but that wasn't going to stop me from ordering the epic $28 portion here. This could be my new favorite restaurant in all New York City. I had heard about this place on social media and my friend and I got here at 4:45 to be seated on a Tuesday night. The atmosphere side feels so comfortable but also like you are at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. We split the house salad, which was huge and had this incredible Dijon mustard dressing , the garlic bread, and the vinegar chicken. Now this might be a crazy statement to make, but I think that the vinegar chicken is one of the best chickens I've ever had. It was incredibly flavorful and different than any other chicken dish. A friend that lives in NYC said this was one of her favorite restaurants in the city, so we were excited to try it! We put two and two together that two TikTok viral server friends work here and that made us even more excited. As instructed by our friend, we arrived at 4:50pm to wait in line before they open on a Thursday. Also as expected, there was a line probably 20 people deep by then. She said if you don't go at 5, you wait forever for a table. We were lucky and got seated in the first group. It was a bit odd that you aren't assigned one server, but rather everyone on the floor comes by to check on you. We had 2-3 servers ask us about our drinks, then our food, then kept checking in on us. While it was great to meet the TikTok famous servers this way, it felt like we didn't have a clear single server and a bit erratic. It also meant every few minutes someone came to our table - this made us feel rushed. They don't have a cocktail menu, which was also a bit inconvenient - we both came up with what we wanted, but not knowing the price until we got our check was a bummer. Our friend said she loves the burger so we both got that, but I wish we would have tried the Caesar salad (which I have also heard great things about) and Chicken Parm or another Italian dish. I really liked the burger, but for me it was missing some salt and a unique element. It tasted a bit like a Big Mac, but without the sauce. The fries were great! Bernie's is worth the travel into Greenpoint! My boyfriend and I were hanging out Friday afternoon deciding where we wanted to go to dinner; we had made a reservation at another restaurant and thought we were settled... Upon entering Bernie's you are blown away by the rustic and charming ambiance; it is reminiscent of other restaurant in NYC (J.G Melon, Pete's Tavern, etc.) they have Tiffany Lamps hanging all around and the lighting is super dark. We tried to put our name on the list to wait for indoor seating, however, we were told that the list was full, however, we could put our name on the bar list for two seat, which we did, we waited for about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get seated (best decision we've ever made!) The bartenders were so friendly and attentive! We ordered the following: Appetizers: - Chips & Onion dip (Even if you are not a chip person you need to order! I wanted to shove my face into the onion dip!!) - Cheese Sticks (My boyfriend and I agreed that the cheese sticks were the best we have ever consumed!) Main Course: - Veggie Hamburger (truly out of this world! The veggie patties were perfect and the sauce blew my mind!) - Hamburger (my boyfriend said he will be dreaming about this burger for a while!) Dessert: - Brownie Sundae!!! Funny enough, I heard about this joint in a podcast and had been wanting to go since. On a weeknight, I showed up at 3 minutes to opening, was sat during the first seating of guests, and there were still 3 tables open until 5:30PM with people trickling in--the same might not be true in the spring/summer or on a weekend. $164 pre-grat can get you: one vodka martini, two frosty IPAs, a house salad, mozz sticks, deluxe burger, chicken parm, a side of onion rings, and a side of broccoli. Last night, the side of broccoli was broccolini cooked in garlic, finished with lemon and a lacy frico round. Everything came out great. I appreciated that the onion ring sauce (smoky) was different from the fry sauce (zesty/ketchup-y) that came out with the burger even though at first glance they appeared to be the same. I thought the burger ate kind of sweet due to the spread that's on the bun and against all of the briny elements from the rest of my dinner (martini olive, olives in the house salad, yum!), otherwise was a great burger. I came here again about a month ago to give it another shot. I gotta say, still not really impressed and not sure what the hype is about. I personally thought the burger was even less appealing this time around and really needed a lot of the special (Big Mac) sauce to be good and moist. I've been to Bernie's a number of times with friends. They don't take reservations, so sometimes there is a wait. I've always tried to show up right before 5 pm so we can be seated quickly. The restaurant is cute, small and homey, with booth seating. There's also a good amount of outdoor seating as well, and there's a bar. I recently went with my infant son, and they have one booster seat. I've had many of the dishes, including: Chips and Dip (4.5/5): Love this chips and dip. The chips are housemade and just the right thickness. The dip is savory and tart. Mozzarella Sticks (4/5): The mozz sticks are definitely good, but I don't think they live up to the hype. Still great though, and I order them sometimes (but not always) when I go. House Salad (5/5): LOVE. This salad is excellent, great to share. Caesar Salar (5/5): ALSO LOVE. Another excellent salad. Whenever I go with my friends, we debate about which salad to get, and usually end up getting both. Vinegar Chicken (5/5): Amazing chicken. It's always so well-cooked, tender, and well-flavored. This is a great dish tos hare. Chicken Parm (4.5/5): Excellent chicken parm, smothered in cheese. Crispy Eggplant Parm (4.5/5): A wonderful dish, also smothered in cheese. The burger was good, but nothing special. There are definitely better burgers out there. I thought it was a bit dry--I prefer my burgers to be a bit more saucy. The fries were really good though. Perfectly crispy and salty. The chicken parm was good, but we thought it was strange that it didn't come over pasta. Every other chicken parm I've ever had has been over spaghetti or some other type of pasta, so I was a bit taken aback. The chicken parm is also $30, so we felt like it wasn't worth the money. Yes, you likely need to put yourself on a waitlist to sit, but there are plenty of seats outside or at the bar to hang or drink while you wait. The ambiance is nice, the music can be a little loud, but the food is excellent. I ordered the baked clams, house salad, mozzarella sticks, and the eggplant parm- all portions were generous and delicious (highly recommend the eggplant parm, it was perfectly crispy). Another viral NY spot that did not quite live up to expectations. Huge portions, good flavor, and great service. This place was jumping on a sunday evening. I went at 4:45 because I thought they opened at 5, but the place was already packed full--perhaps they had adjusted hours for father's day. In any case, I have seen mixed reviews on the mozzarella sticks. And, I am on team average. They are girthy, and huge, but lacking in flavor. Obviously, fried cheese tastes good. And, the cheese pulls are great. But the flavor of the actual mozzarella fell flat. It just did not have much flavor at all. Even some extra salt would've bumped it up big time. The chicken Parmesan was my main course. An absolute mega cutlet. Cheesy and crispy. The cutlet was a bit rubbery, maybe I just got a bad cut. Other than that. I did enjoy the chicken Parmesan. The cheese, sauce, and chicken blended together wonderfully. The breading remained in tact and did not get soggy. I do gotta talk about the space itself. I love the vibes. It has nostalgic diner vibes. But, still a bit elevated. The classic diner vibe has been a bit overdone, and gets a bit corny, but I think Bernie's did a really nice job making it feel authentic and natural. From the rounded booths to the frosted mugs it definitely felt both retro and contemporary. A few decor pieces were a little cheesy, but hey, it's their restaurant and they can certainly decorate as they wish. This is definitely a spot I would try again.
