Beer Karma is a craft beer bar and bottle shop that opened in Brooklyn, New York in March 2017. It was founded by Dan Lamonaca. The bar is located on the ground floor of a building at the corner of Union Avenue and Conselyea Street in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood. The building has been owned by the Lamonaca family for multiple generations. Beginning in the 1950s, the storefront served as a pharmacy that was run by Lamonaca's great-grandfather. In the 1970s and '80s, it was a gift shop run by his grandfather. Most recently it was an architecture firm. Lamonaca's grandmother still owns the building and even lives in the upstairs apartment. After spending six years at JP Morgan, Lamonca decided to leave the finance world. Although he was interested in finance, it was never his passion. He really loved craft beer though and wanted to open his own place where he could teach people about it. At Beer Karma, Lamonaca has curated a fine selection of beer from local NYC breweries as well as other breweries around the world. I recently visited Beer Karma while I was in Williamsburg to see a concert. Williamsburg is one of my favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods because in addition to the locals being very friendly, there is also a bustling craft beer scene. I was on the lookout for cans by Brooklyn-based Back Home Beer; they're not available in my home state of Connecticut. Beer Karma was cozy and inviting. They had an excellent selection of cans and bottles. I was happy to see that they indeed had cans of Back Home Beer (which I purchased to go). Since I was there, I decided to pull up a seat by the bar and order a draught beer. After looking over the chalkboard menu, I decided to go with Threes Brewing's "Endless Plane" (Wine Barrel-Aged Saison). It was a fantastic beer with delicious notes of white grape and stone fruit; I was very happy with my choice. Everyone at the bar was also very friendly. I had a nice chat with some people about pizza and beer. Quite possibly the worst and most rude service I've had in the past 10 years I've lived here. Did I accidentally hit my vape after he told me not to? Sure. Did I deserve to be scolded like my abusive dad used to treat me as a child? No. Literally I was left dumbfounded - this is after my party was so nice over the evening and had tipped him already. I'm just flabbergasted that someone behind a bar feels they can speak to another human that way and I'm thick skinned. Give your staff therapy. read more

Walked into this place and was completely ignored by the bartender. No greeting, no acknowledgment. I sat at the breakfast bar and waited while the bartender spoke to a white customer and then proceeded to scroll on his phone, actively ignoring me and my friend as we patiently waited for him to acknowledge us. We're both Black women. He refused to look at us. We left, all we wanted was a quick drink and what we got was a reminder that not all customers are welcome everywhere. Came here with a page out of the Brooklyn Pub Pass. Beer Karma is a beer shop with a bar and amazing hospitality. They have a fridge stocked with some local favorites, and some taps that have some good choices as well. The bar is small and intimate, forcing you to become the best of friends with the bartender and other patrons. If you choose to remain amongst your own company, they have a table across from the bar that's more private. The bartender last night was super cool and friendly. He seemed to be very close with some of the regulars. He even provided cookies for us to munch on! Beer Karma does not serve food but they allow you to bring in your own. You have some great eateries to choose from in the area. Their fridge is more much diverse than their taps. Last night they mainly had sours and IPAs. However, I got to try the Allagash Map 40 from their tap list which knocked my socks off! Sometimes being a little adventurous can be very rewarding! The bad news is they do not do beer flights. I had such a great time last night that I know I have to return whenever I'm in Williamsburg! read more

Small beer outpost with draft and take out options. Pretty good usage of the space with beer lining the walls, bar seating in the middle, and a table up front. Not too many people inside Saturday afternoon, so was able to quickly order a drink at the bar. Tap list is disappointingly small (bottle/can selection is significantly larger), with beers ranging from $7-12 depending on type and size. Other notes - corkage fee of $3 and bags of chips for $1. Not much else to say about this spot; the bartender is friendly and seems that locals stop by here periodically. Good for a grab and go as it could get busy during evening/night. read more

Great mix of spurs and pilsners and hop bomb IPAs. - There are subtle things that make you appreciate Beer Karma. You see the way the owner cleans the taps with distilled water and carefully tends to every pour in quality glassware and you can tell he cares about beer and the customer experience. - There's a great group of people that go running from here every Monday at 7p. Great bar. Difficult to come here and not have a very good time. Beer selection is amongst the best you'll find in NYC, always changing, and always interesting. Small counter seating area fosters a family-like atmosphere amongst regulars. Very friendly owner. Bar has a flat screen TV as well, which is extremely unusual for a good beer-bar, and much appreciated in the event there's a big game going on. Dan and staff curate a fine selection beer from all over the Northeast. With frequent tap and bottle rotations, you can always find a new beer to try. If you aren't well versed in the craft brew game, just ask a few questions and they can point you in the right direction. Great spot for enjoying a variety of craft beers. The space is clean, bright, and inviting and the bartender and owner, Dan, is highly knowledgeable about all things beer related. He recommended two different beers based off my description of what I like/don't like and he was spot on with both. I also really appreciate how meticulously clean the bar is. You can tell the owner takes a lot of pride in maintaining the space and the quality of the beer reflects that. Last night my friend and I stopped in here for a drink. I initially asked for and IPA on draft and the bartender served me his recommended IPA. It was light and citrusy & I was expecting something hoppy. I asked him about it and he said - an IPA is supposed to be light and citrusy. I said I was expecting something hoppy like lagunitas & ballast point (which I like). He replied that those were corporate brewries ( Lagunitas is owned by Heineken & ballast point by Constellation) and he doesn't recognize them as legitimate. I said - fine what about Heady Topper - thats a good IPA. He said they just had Heady Topper in 2 weeks ago - so I was late on that one. I said could I get something else instead of what he had poured me and he gave me a different beer and wanted to charge me for that too. I said no thanks to that and he said - get out of my bar, its closed. I took my original beer and sat with my friend for a bit longer before leaving. I didnt finish my beer and we left. My friend also ordered a beer that he was unsatisfied with and we tipped him $6 on the 2 drinks prior to him being so rude. read more
