The draw of this little watering hole is definitely their backyard patio, filled with trees and nice spaced out seating good for dates or small groups. We were lucky they weren't busy on the Saturday afternoon we visited, and enjoyed sour ales poured by the super friendly bartender. Would've liked to sit in the back garden but they do close earlier than the rest of the bar - which is understandable given it's location in the neighborhood. DJ was fun and played a wide variety of music from salsa to disco all which seemed to fit the vibe. The issue happened after a beer was knocked out of my hand onto the floor by another patron. First time coming here so I can't comment on the revamp and seemingly tragic death of the daytime cafe setup. The outdoor seating is nice -- kinda rustic, like you're chilling out in a garden -- but you also risk having ants crawling surreptitiously over if not near your food, especially when you order a meat & cheese board that includes caramel-drizzled apple slices. I actually killed one and didn't feel bad at all about it. I got an IPA and it was pretty decent (actually wanted to try the Duvel but they didn't have it on tap that day.. boo). The downside to sitting in the backyard is being near smokers. So choose your table wisely. There's a "no laptop" sign? I still saw a dude with a laptop sitting in the yard. I enjoyed my time here. I was stuck here waiting for a friend for little while. The lighting was low and mysterious and in the evening they put out tea lights. The Wi-Fi has gotten better since some of the reviews that were posted. I was a little weary at first because of the bed Wi-Fi reviews. There are random extension cords with outlets hidden. You just have to look for it. They had tiny items whether it was snacks or drinks. I had ordered a cappuccino and pickled beets. The beets were nice and ... Well, pickled. The cappuccino kept me going for a while. Everything is a few dollars here and there but it all adds up. They have a happy hour deal and some beers to offer. read more

The rudest and most bizarre 'bouncer' I've ever encountered. He made implications that I was 15 years old along with my friends. We're all 27 and up. Beyond that he questioned paper vaccination cards, and said they weren't a valid form of vax proof. One of us didn't have a smart phone and therefore didn't have the vax QR code. Additionally, rejected one of us for having a temporary ID from the DMV. Which for the record can be accepted at bars as a legitimate form of ID. Ultimately, he ruined our entire night which was supposed to be a wonderful birthday celebration. Once inside, with two friends down due to the militant security efforts by said bouncer, we saw the bar wasn't exceptionally busy but waited upwards of 10+ minutes to be acknowledged for a drink. Classy, not-expensive cocktail list, great backyard, excellent atmosphere, A-PLUS MUSIC CURATION and bartender Naomi is the coolest, most down-to-earth kind of person. I can understand the five stars, and I get the one stars. But this place, if you look at all its elements, probably deserves three. And the reason it falls in the middle: Troost contradicts. It's cute, cozy, and charming. The backyard is more than welcoming. Its coffee? One, maybe two notches above gas station. Its prices? Almost criminal. Let's look first at the beer. You can expect a $6 to $8 pint of draft almost anywhere now. That's irksome enough. But what you get at Troost for $6 is exactly a half pint. In short, they're shorting us. Significantly. So, if I want a pint of beer, I have to order two beers at Troost for a total of $12. Is the atmosphere six dollars better per pint than Habitat's across the street? No, it's not. What you get on beer pretty much explains the pricing and portions of most items at Troost. For example, a 'large' latte is $4.50. First, it's not large. Troost's 'large' is a regular size anywhere else. And the standard price for a regular latte: $4.50. Trying to hoodwink us again? Or is Troost just out to lunch? If they are, they're probably eating where the portions and price don't sit at different poles, and where the coffee doesn't paste an I-just-ate-a-whole-lemon look on your face. On price and portion, and on the quality of some items (like the coffee), Troost deserves one or two stars. On friendly, courteous, and interesting staff, and on the physical character of the place, it commands four or five. I'm thinking that the owners know all this - because they have a sign to ward off those tempted to come in for what's good about the joint; it reads: No outside food or beverages. A more respectable approach would be to allow us to bring in our own grub and drink. Charge us a fiver at the door to enjoy what's great about the place. But please let us bring in a sammie from the deli down the block. Alternatively, Troost, why not just give us a comparable alternative to Champion, and Milk and Roses? Your location is better. But do you think you can rely on locale alone when the above establishments (serving up better and more reasonably priced fare) require just a two-block walk north? I very much want to be a fan but Troost is dropping the ball and will, I fear, soon be out of the game. read more

I absolutely love Troost. It's a divey-esque bar which I'm all about. It's got a fun 70s vibe and lighting, friendly bartenders and DJ/live music some nights. If I recall correctly they even offered happy hour specials on weekends. Great prices and super fun bar! read more

Oh Troost, Could you be the most irritating coffee house on the planet? What I like about this place is the yard, it's what would get me to come again but jeez. The heroin addict working behind the counter needs to smile occasionally and not be annoyed that we are paying off his unused college degree with 5 dollar pastries and 3 dollar miniature coffees. Basic sanitation is an issue here. When I'm fixing my coffee I really don't want have to sort through the pile of unwashed dishes to look for sugar, milk and a spoon. Please stop putting them all on the counter together. You're a business, sober up and use two separate areas for them, maybe try washing the filthy ones and just leave the milk and stuff on the counter. I can't even believe that this is a problem. There are rules about wearing hats in food service for a reason. Almost every time I go here I see one of the employees dip their hair into the food on the counter. This might be why they don't get an 'A' rating from the Dept of Health. The food is ok at best, nothing is actually cooked here, just assemblage. Everything on the menu seems to be inspired by dorm room stoners and is available elsewhere in the neighborhood (or probably in your refridgerator) at a fraction of the cost. I can't decide on their 6 PM switch to a wine bar. That is usually the time of day when I am desperate enough for a caffeine fix to go here, forgetting that they won't serve a drip cup and then end up settling for a poorly made Americano. I guess the man sentiment here is that they just aren't good enough to justify their prices or snobbery. read more

Very small, but great Manhattan on tap, and the beer and a shot is very affordable. The live music is kinda torture, because the bar is so tiny it's hard to fit a band in with patrons, and you definitely can't hear anything over the music when it's happening. Bugsy Siegel once said that stealing is a form of rape. Like Bugsy, I too had something stolen from me, my cold brew from TROOST. This comes at the decision of the owner, who feels that it makes sense to turn this cafe/bar into just a bar. Great. Another bar, just what Greenpoint needs. This place had an advantage over every other coffee bar in the area, you could get cold brew at any hour, no matter what the season. Love this place! I've only visited once but will be frequenting it now that I know how great it is. We dropped in after a long evening in manhattan to grab a drink and check out the space. It's super cozy and has a good amount of seating. The staff at the bar were super friendly and nice. We checked out the back patio and I was so impressed by how beautiful it is! Kind of reminded me of Urth Cafe over on the west coast but of course with Brooklyn's charm. There was tons of quaint seating with beautiful lighting and seating for either small groups or larger parties. We enjoyed our drinks (noticed the drink menu is extensive and definitely cheaper than other places) and were happy to learn they still served food. I had the manchego tomato sandwich while he had the brisket and both were delicious! Good portion sizes, top notch ingredients, and beautifully presented. I've been craving a place like this since I first moved to NYC 4 years ago. Something quaint, good quality, friendly service, open late, and with few crowds. Troost makes me happy. The vibe is cozy and warm. The coffee is delicious and they serve a to-die-for pistachio/raspberry mini muffin. The little touches are what makes this place really stand out. Small, carefully wrapped packages of salt and pepper, bakery string tied around sandwiches, and my personal favorite - milk stored in elegant thermos. And for those so inclined, they host a Bingo nights on Wednesday at 8 pm. I haven't been yet, but I'm very curious. read more

Another coffee shop in Greenpoint? Sure, why not?! I'm pretty excited about the addition of this new cafe to the neighborhood because I barely need to deviate from my subway route to pick-up coffee. Not to mention that the coffee is amazing, the service is friendly and fast, and they have this really delicious rose shaped apple cider pastry that is a must try. I found the bread of their mini baguette sandwiches (I've tried two) to be a bit hard and the options perhaps uninspired--especially considering the high caliber of their rose pastry--and not as good as Champion's, one of their competitors down the street. The space is beautiful and comfortable with an awesome backyard. It's definitely a worthy addition to the neighborhood and I will be frequenting it often. Will they offer coffee cards in the future? Here's the deal... I really liked this place. The atmosphere was mellow and hipsterish. They were playing some music that sounded like the doors, but it wasn't. The food was really tastey and perfect portions if you aren't looking for a heavy dish. The beer they had on tap was good; I actually really liked that they had kolsh on tap. The problem was twofold: 1.) there were nats on the walls. 22 to be exact! I counted them 4 times to make sure I came close to the number. This was unacceptable and the reason we left. If this is a re-occurring incident I won't be going back for long 2.) they played one album the whole time. This is a TERRIBLE mistake. Very few albums are an art and should not be played all the way through. Especially with moody music, this is a poor decision. I can bear it for a little, but this is an automatic disqualification for becoming one of my local haunts Fix those two issues, and we got ourselves a great spot. read more

The place may look small, but there is a hidden patio out back and a welcoming vibe on busy nights--the mood guided along like Sherpa by the reasonable prices and the quality of the drinks. Not the best for a large group if you're there when the patio is closed, but good for a group of 3-6. The food menu is simple and light, not your usually bar/pub fair at all. I order their sandwiches and appreciate that the size is reasonable (unlike most places in our country where they pile on meat and ignore the veggies--seriously, wtfm?) and they are served with a little green leafy goodness on the side. They know how to make a terrific Negroni, which is strangely rare, and they have regard for all the classics plus a fun and creative cocktail menu in addition with some absolute seasonal winners! But the REAL reason I'm writing this review is NAOMI. When I walk in and see this bartender working I can't help but smile! Some mornings I come here to drink coffee and write. Some afternoons I come here to drink coffee and read. Some afternoons I come here to drink wine and read. Some nights I come here with friends to drink wine and talk. A tiny little joint with a makeshift kitchen and a cozy little courtyard. In the countless times I've been here, I have never come to know even one employee. But I'm ok with that. They are happy to leave me alone to do whatever it is I came there to do for hours on end. I actually really like this place but... I think it is way too expensive for what you get. I like the egg sandwich on a croissant, but you really can't mess that up. I would give this place 2 1/2. Being in Brooklyn and the level of good coffee, this place doesnt really cut it. Also Ive lived in NYC for a long time and Im used to just spending $40 walking out of my apartment but I got small regular coffee and banana bread pastry...$6. Really? Good pastry though.... read more
