We didn't get seated at a table right away, so we got a drink at the bar and then moved to our booth in the back of the restaurant. We were hungry so we pretty much ordered everything off the menu to share. We got: -bread service -baked clams -crab dip -chicken parm -burger + fries -skirt steak -cacio peppe -chocolate and pistachio sundae Our waiter was super attentive and gave us a brief history of the place when we had questions. I'm not a big chicken parm person, but this one was great because of the kick! It had some spice to it. The burger was SO GOOD - sesame bun and everything! A lovely meal. The food was delicious and came out quickly. Very attentive waitstaff. Ambiance was dark and cool for a night out- but still clean. Bread service was good, green beans were great! Branzino and lentil burger were great. I definitely liked the lentil burger more than i expected I would. It was hearty and the sesame bun made it excellent. For dessert, we got the pistachio sundae which was unreal! You'd think to skip it in favor of the tricolore cake but it really is so good. The cake itself was wonderful, it's coconut forward rather than almond. So if you're going craving that almond extract flavor- you're not going to get that. It was still pretty great. JR & Son landed on my radar via one of my brothers. He had heard it was a relatively new spot that was getting positive buzz and thought it would be a good place to check out. That being said, we grabbed our other brother and decided to grab dinner here on Christmas Eve Eve. Even though it was cold outside, the vibe was completely different once we entered. The restaurant gives off a warm vibe, with lots of earth tones and a cozy aesthetic. The dining area is somewhat rectangular with the front end having bar seating and some booths, with more tables towards the back. The menu at JR is mainly Italian; the majority of of the dishes were familiar, however there were slight modifications on them that kept things interesting. We decided to start with a couple of apps to share - the bread service, the octopus, and the arancini salad. These were all quite tasty; the bread was warm, seasoned with a butter-herb mixture and served with a side of marinara sauce mmmm. The arancini salad was interesting - I'm not sold on rice balls being in a salad, but the dressing was really good and the portion was large enough to share. The octopus was my favorite app - it was tender and served with a very flavorful sauce. For my main, I decided to get the paccheri - this was served with lobster in a fra diavlo sauce. The dish was great; the pasta was a smidge too soft for my personal taste, but it contained a generous amount of lobster and the sauce had a good amount of heat. Additionally we ordered a size of green beans which I was pleasantly surprised with. The beans were kept long, and again served with a flavorful sauce and topped with lots of garlic; I feel like a broken record saying the sauces were flavorful but wow they really were great. We could not pass up dessert, and decided to share the rainbow cookie cake. This was a generous slice and a great finisher - just enough almond flavor and a good balance of jelly between the layers. Service was great - food came out quickly, and the entire staff was warm and friendly. I'm usually wary of super-new places but I'm glad I gave this spot a try. Some things are hit or miss, but give them a few more months and they'll be firing on all cylinders. My boyfriend and I arrived on a Saturday at 5:40 PM (they open at 6) for a walk-in, and got bar seats right at opening. I tried: + House dirty martini with gin - perfect + Caesar salad - great + Mushroom and chestnut ravioli - best dish of the evening omg + Chicken parm - too spicy for me (those chiles are not messing around) but otherwise excellent + Rainbow cookie layer cake - perfect Returned a month later and tried some items I didn't have before - arancini salad, Junior's burger, french fries and broccoli rabe (special). This was our first time at Jr and Son and we absolutely loved it!! We chose this restaurant as our "lazy Friendsgiving" spot and boy, was it perfect. Truly everything we ate was delicious. We got the Chicken Parmesan, the fish, lobster pasta, and green beans. The green beans were probably lowest on our list, but still good. Stepping inside makes you feel like you entered an early 20th century Italian place, along with the music, lighting and feel of a cross between a diner and a speakeasy. We went without reservations and did not have much trouble getting a seat, though at the bar so if you want a table, try to aim for a reservation. Food was awesome. The baked stuffed clams tasted delicious, with a touch of lemongrass that gave it almost a Thai flavor. The onion rings were fine, nicely fried with bomba sauce but not my favorite. Chicken Parmesan was delicious but the sauce was a bit salty. That being said it was still a flavorful delicious sauce with the tomatoes being well simmered in, just hoping for less salt next time. Lobster Fra Diavolo was delicious, beautifully cooked with a decent amount of lobster meat. This restaurant is very 80s/90s vibes. It's dark, sexi and makes you feel like you're attending a dinner in the Sopranos. Got a martini (of course) and it was done really well. For apps - focaccia bread is a must, caesar is good but portion size is pretty small. Pasta - got the the sausage pasta and it was really good. The star of the show was the chicken parm (must try). Lastly, we got all 3 desserts so you don't have to. Tiramisu had too much of an orange flavor for me, rainbow cake was too coconut-y, but the vanilla / pistachio ice cream was so so good. I would rate Jr and son a 3.5 if I could. First time I came by, there was a 90 minute wait for a table so we didn't stay. This time I came back with a reservation. The restaurant is pretty tiny. They say walk ins are welcome, but it seems like walk ins can only sit at the bar. There is no where to wait if you need to wait for a table, outside is your only option to wait. The service was good here and everything came out quick. They need to turn over the tables fast so this contributed to efficiency of the service. We were there an hour or less. I had a Sprezzatura drink, which was like a martini. Refreshing. We had onion rings for an appetizer. They were very salty but I enjoyed them. We both had the ravioli as an entree. Again, this dish was very salty but not terrible. We had the rainbow cake for dessert which was honestly the best part of the meal. I was not blown away with the food overall. I would come back here for a drink and dessert but probably skip dinner. There are two bathrooms. One is listed as ADA accessible. The other one is the smallest bathroom I've ever seen, lol. Sound level in the restaurant was average. They had photographers in the space photographing food and the bar. The manager gave us a heads up about this but it was annoying nonetheless, with flashes going off every minute. When I sat down, I noticed my utensils were dirty. I expected more cleanliness wise here. Overall, if you can get a reservation or walk in and get seated quickly, I'd say it's ok to try this out. Authentic NYC Red Sauce Experience - Worth the Hype! Finally made it to this classic NYC red sauce joint after seeing the New Yorker review, and it definitely lived up to the buzz! Fair warning though - make a reservation because this place gets packed. The Atmosphere: Long, lively space with that authentic NYC energy you're looking for. Definitely has that old-school vibe we were seeking. The Food: Started strong with 2 dozen fresh New Brunswick oysters, solid bread service, and surprisingly good onion rings. For mains, we went with the branzinos, chicken parm, and lobster paccheri - all were delicious with generous portions. The baked Alaska for dessert was the perfect finish to share. Service & Pacing: Here's what impressed me most - despite the crowd, service was incredibly efficient without feeling rushed. Kitchen was fast, staff was on point. We were in and out in 1.5 hours while still enjoying our meal. Value: For NYC, the prices are very reasonable. With cocktails (well-priced!), wine, and tip, we spent $425 for four people. That's actually a steal for this quality and portion size in the city. Bottom Line: This place delivers on what it promises - authentic red sauce Italian in a classic NYC setting. A gorgeous and long bar with a 1930s inspiration. Bar wall is a huge mirror elongating the space. I'd say a cocktail bar first with a few draft. I didn't catch what was on draft or what wines were offered. Bartenders were quick and helpful. I placed my drink order bay soon after being seated. We placed our dessert order shortly after that. We shared the coconut forward rainbow cake. An interesting interpretation on a NYC classic. The menu was concise yet everything seemed appealing. Every item we saw looked fantastic. This place is the real deal 10/10 My Boyfriend and I celebrated his birthday at Jr & Sons. We sat at the bar and had the most wonderful experience with the bartenders Max and Brenda. The host JJ was also incredibly friendly and checked on us as we were sitting close to her at the end of the bar. The food was Phenomenal! We went all out with the Big Ice which is a beautiful array of different raw bar items. The broiled octopus was absolute perfection. We then moved to the burrata ravioli which were like little cheesy pillows with crispy prosciutto on top. Then the whole Branzino arrived and we truly COULD NOT STOP EATING IT! I knew we had to have dessert and the staff pick seemed to be the chocolate pistachio sundae. It knocked our socks off, I don't know what magical sorcery is in that ice cream but it will keep us coming back. More of a 2.5 for me, this place just did not live up to the social media hype. Had a reservation but they claimed that you had to write in the reservation notes you wanted a 2 seater booth and that everyone else did so we had to be seated in the back less comfortable table. Considering this spot is pretty new I'd be shocked that all the other patrons knew to do that and did- I have seen nothing about that tip anywhere. No dishes were particularly memorable- the stracciatella olive dish was pretty good but hard to mess up cheese, stuffed clams were weird would not recommend. For the mains got the steak and cacio pepe- steak was good and had a nice sauce but the cacio pepe was a let down- didn't even warrant finishing the one scoop I had on my plate. The rainbow cake was OK- was happy I was forewarned that it had coconut flakes on it not salk flakes and was a more coconut forward taste than rainbow cookie. Not nearly good enough to compensate for the bad service and wildly tight seating. On a January trip for my girlfriends birthday while walking around Williamsburg Brooklyn she insisted we stop in there to get a drink and so she could use the bathroom. At first I was weary seeing a few locals in a dimly lit bar it looked like it was gonna be bad news considering I was wearing a Philadelphia eagles jersey. To my surprise no one said a thing about it and the patrons were cool as cash. The best part about our whole entire trip was stopping in junior and sons. The bartender Anthony was one in a million he reminded me of my old man just a neighborhood dude. Anthony is such a great dude that he asked why we are in new York and when I told him it's my girlfriend's birthday so we came to nyc to celebrate. He asked a patron to watch the bar he had to go smoke a ciggy. When he came back in five minutes later he had a miniature piece of cheesecake with a candle on it. He began to sing happy birthday as all the other patrons chimed in. My girlfriend was so happy she cried I was absolutely floored by the gesture. It's rare you find people in the world like Anthony a true gentleman and all around great guy.
