The ricotta pancakes are class . Fresh ingredients, delicious. Would totally recommend and go back again

You would think the restaurant was trying to kill us! I ordered the mussels, and there was no mention of cilantro in the description. Yet, the smaller than expected plate of mussels was piled high with more cilantro than I have ever seen outside of a food prep station at a Mexican restaurant. This is during the lettuce Cyclospora outbreak, which cilantro was an item that was recommended to avoid, and so I was trying to avoid cilantro too. Once I removed the piled high cilantro into a separate dish, I got into the mussels. And I have to say that there were so many empty shells, I was wondering where all those mussels went because they certainly were not hiding in the broth or in the monstrous amount of cilantro I had removed from the top of the dish. I honestly don't think I have ever had a more disappointing dish of mussels. Probably in total there were 10 mussels I consumed. And for $28! Here is the menu description: Steamed in a saffron-coconut sauce with chilies and scallions. Accompaniment: Served with grilled sourdough bread for dipping into the broth I will NEVER return to this restaurant and honestly want to call my credit card and report fraud to get a refund. The entire meal costs $22 alone for scrambled eggs, hash browns, and a multi-grain toast. The sides bring up the meal to $30 minimum which I find pretty ridiculous. This spot was a letdown. It's definitely one of those places where the food looks good on photos, but the flavor doesn't live up to the hype. I tried two of their popular dishes, the Moroccan scramble and ricotta pancakes, and while they were beautifully presented, they fell flat taste wise. I had to rely on hot sauce and pancake syrup to get through them. I finished my meal only because I hate wasting food; otherwise, it would have been left untouched. The space itself is very cozy, borderline uncomfortable. Seating is extremely tight, to the point where you're practically pressed up against strangers. If you're not okay with close quarters (and close scents), this might not be for you. It's a small place with bar seating and some outdoor tables, and when we came around 10:30am on a weekend, it was already packed. Expect a possible wait and a waitlist. Service was just okay, no real check ins and more of a quick, transactional feel, almost diner like. Overall, this place did not match what I envisioned. With so many great options in Brooklyn, I'd personally skip this one and try somewhere else. read more

Brunch review Was able to snag a two person outside table for brunch. Wait was only 10 minutes, but I can't imagine how busy it will be during peak season. Reservations are definitely recommended. They have extensive outdoor seating which is great during the nice weather, but indoor seating is limited. They do have a bar with counter service. Eclectic menu with something for everyone. The ricotta pancakes were popular and I can see why. They were light, fluffy and perfectly paired with the fruit. Best to share. The Moroccan scramble was good, but could've used a bit more spice. I was going to an event at Warsaw and was looking for restaurants in the area to get dinner prior. The location is pretty great! It's right next to McCarren Park and it seems pretty lively with ample outdoor seating and a small cozy indoor area. The seating inside is pretty small, so try to make reservations in advance. The ambience and service was great. Our server was very attentive and checked in on us a few times. There was great music. It was a great place to chat and enjoy some drinks on happy hour. The food was ok. I got the pan seared salmon which was good. I enjoyed the little crisps and sauce it came in. A friend got the fettuccine which wasn't the best? The noodles were very bland, it had no flavor. The saving grace was the eggplant fritters. The cheese bread was a nice appetizer. I got to try their Five Leaves Burger, and I found it to be a very interesting combination of sweetness from the beet and pineapple with the savoriness of the beef. Personally, I felt it's more suited for people who enjoy that type of contrast--like those who like pineapple on pizza--though it wasn't exactly to my taste. One small thing that threw me off: when I ordered, the waitress asked if I wanted cheese. I said yes, but it wasn't mentioned that it would be an extra $2 until I saw it on the bill. It was pouring so hard that we stayed indoors by the doors that a waitress in a blue top (Sunday shift this past week) came to us and asked us to wait outside. She said we couldn't block the entrance. We moved a bit left to the door but it was pouring so hard and we didn't have an umbrella. She came back 1 min later after and asked that we leave, outside. It was incredibly rude. There was no one waiting for the table and we weren't the only ones waiting for the rain to subdue a little. We will never be back again and highly recommend the manager train their staff better. My other guest debated going back to talk to her directly for this was ridiculous customer service after a nice tip and spending a considerable amount of $$ for Sunday brunch. A great place for a casual brunch if you're in the Greenpoint area. The restaurant itself is very small so you'll be super close to others and no reservations available- walk in only. I had to wait 30-40 min. The food was great. I feel for the price ($20) for for the big brekky, which included eggs,hash browns, toast, and your choice of 2 sides, it's a great bang for your buck. Tip: choose the baked beans for one of the sides and thank me later. We had spicy margs and they had the perfect amount of alcohol. Service was efficient, no complaints. Overall, I would return but I'm not the biggest fan of restaurants where people are literally seated on top of you. However, the food was great so I will probably make an exception. read more

I might have set my expectations too high and got disappointed. I do not recommend Five Leaves for its food and service. If you are looking for good food don't go. But if what you want is coffee (latte, cappuccino or an espresso martini) then go ahead and try it out, it's pretty good. Food: the food was blah. Nice presentation but that's about it. We had the ricotta pancakes, most of us agreed that they were too dense and not fluffy enough, it becomes overwhelming after the first 2 bites. One thing that I appreciated was that the fruits were fresh and sweet. The Moroccan scramble was ehhh. It is stacked on top of the bread and to get to the bottom of the plate it's a hassle and it's messy. The taste is not spectacular but it's edible. The burger was ok, nothing special. The chicken sandwich was good, not great. Ohhh but wait...their mussels were delicious. We enjoyed the coconut curry sauce and the fresh cilantro. Service: the best way that I can describe the service in one word is...neglectful. The waitress was not rude, but we already had our plates in the table when I had to ask for water for the table. The glasses were sitting on the table empty for 30-45 min. We asked for a hot chocolate (along with the rest of the order) it took like 30 min to come out, after we all had our coffee. Ambiance: is serene, cool, comfortable. The decor is very nice. Unfortunately I will not be going back and I do not recommend the restaurant because of the service and the food. Ordered the burger and steak plates with frozen watermelon margaritas. Burger style is thick and juicy and messy, slathered with spicy mayo (huge fan). Truffle fries were delicious and plentiful. My partner liked the steak as he ate it all unless he was just very hungry. The margaritas were strong and tasty - perfect for a summer evening. I've been coming here for years, but tonight was a huge disappointment. The food is decent and the waitresses are always very sweet, but the bartenders are another story. After spending over $140 on dinner, I moved to the bar to order a drink and quietly answer a few emails on my iPad before heading home. It was a Monday night and the place was mostly empty. The bartender told me I couldn't sit at the bar, couldn't sit back at the table I had just vacated, and had to move outside. Looking around at a nearly empty restaurant well before closing, I was baffled. When I said I'd just leave instead, his response was a cheerful "Okay, see ya!" before walking away. Sat down on a weekday minutes after they opened and the restaurant was about 3/4s full but the was a full wait staff with 4 waitresses so the service shouldn't be a problem. Seems like all the other tables got their food and drink orders without problem but my friend who happens to be the darkest person dining there that morning was ignored by all 4 waitress despite asking multiple times about the missing coffee order. Each waitress dismissively says oh it's on the way with a patronizing grin and sigh but the coffee finally comes after everyone else has been served both their drinks and entrees. The waitresses can be described as having dead fish syndrome, limp with no expression, thumbing their noses down at you. The food was decent, juicy burger, ricotta appetizer hit the spot but the crappy service and discriminating attitude was a complete turnoff. This is a staff that just automatically expects a 20-25% gratuity but puts no actual effort into their service. read more

There are more seats than it seems at initial glance, I didn't think we would get in but we easily did, we had 3 different glasses of wine and all were really good, I'm a big fan of funky orange and organic wine which they had, they also had the classics and all were well priced. This is possibly the best brunch place I have ever been to. Every menu item was delicious--I ordered a side of scrambled eggs and truffle fries since I happened to be quite full, and I also tried their ricotta pancakes and Moroccan scramble. The presentation of all the dishes was beautiful. The truffle fries were chefs kiss. The scrambled eggs were exquisite--I tried to sub egg whites but they don't do that, and I don't usually like egg yolk but these were quite delicious. The ricotta pancakes were a bit fluffy but not too dense. The Moroccan scramble was also delightful--great combo of flavors and tasted very fresh and rejuvenating. Came on a Sunday, and they don't take brunch reservations. The wait was 45min, ended up taking around an hour to account for getting the table ready etc, but the time passed relatively quickly bc Mccarren park is nearby and the neighborhood in general is nice to walk around. Service was also solid, no complaints. The waitress was very attentive with our water level status, which is always a plus. Only downside is there's only one bathroom, so there was quite a wait. I will definitely be coming back here--every item was so yummy. This might be my new obsession. read more

Reviewing this as a bar rather than for food! I was in the neighborhood and had an hour or so to kill and was looking for an option to have a glass of wine. For some reason in this area the options are slim, there are more dive bars or cocktail bars but nothing in between. It's definitely more of a restaurant (fries looked really good) but they allowed us to sit at a table just for drinks. Very cute ambiance with warm lighting and we got a great back table. I didn't feel welcome here. That was the first thing I noticed that the servers were not friendly and seemed stand offish. We had ordered one appetizer to share and drinks for each of us as a group of 5 in addition to meals. My friend was completely ignored and did not get her drink after 10 min. We had requested again, waited another 5-10 min... and then again... and again. The same waitress kept saying it was coming but how does it take 35-40 min for a coffee drink to come out? And it came after all the meals were ordered. When asking the staff simple questions about the menu they kept sticking their nose in their air. The service is terrible and pretentious at the same time. Food is overpriced. This only place gets business because of the hipsters in the neighborhood- anywhere else it would fail cuz of the poor service and inflated prices. I ordered the ricotta pancakes and my friend got the norwegian salmon. The pancakes were nice and fluffy, and it wasn't too sweet yet had plenty of fresh fruit. They give an ungodly amount of butter though, I'm not sure who's eating all that and I usually joke that I'm paula deen when it comes to butter. Weird ass staff. Was in the area with a local friend. Went in for a glass of wine. My friend recommended chilled red for me. I was obviously unsure but simply asking is the wine dry. Only knowing his name because my friend as I mentioned was local. This weird bartender Taylor or Tyler (insignificant) asks me "do I want it or not" with some weird energy. What a rude way to serve someone. Instead should have guided me and answered my question to ensure that I got something I wanted to drink. Because I did not want to ruin my friends time I stayed and bit my tongue but I don't know in what world he thinks that's ok to talk to anyone ordering a drink. A new set of bartenders showed up and the peon left but another note I wasn't finished with my wine and it was removed. Never going back and I'll be sure to spread the word to others. I'm a big fan of ricotta pancakes, and an especially big fan of those at Five Leaves. I consider myself somewhat of a pancake snob and these, in my opinion, are as close to perfect as it gets. They're loaded up with fresh berries and banana, fluffy with a crispy griddled edge, and feature the most delicious honeycomb butter. I am also partial to the Moroccan scramble. The wait is often pretty nuts but it's worth it in my opinion. I only wish the space inside wasn't so tight, but again, whatever-- the pancakes!! read more

The ambience was great, the service was good. But the food could use some fine tuning. I don't like to leave negative reviews but I implore management to rethink the burger. The burger is bad. Like really bad. It is a structural disaster. Beets, Pineapple, Eggs, and Tomato cause the burger to slide all over the place. We asked for the burger medium and it came out charred, cold, bland and dry. How could a burger have all of these ingredients and still have such a strong lack of flavor? The sauce was non existent. And we added truffle fries to the order. They were the worst truffle fries I have ever had. Cold like they had been sitting for a long time and coated in oil. No extra cheese or parsley or nothing. Just pure oil dumped onto the fries. You wouldn't know they were truffle fries other than the aroma. The entire dish is inedible. and it was $30!!! The fried olives were hot and crunchy, which was great. Loved the blue cheese. The mussels were also really yummy. Loved the addition of lightly toasted bread croutons instead of just serving the dish with bread. We loved the broth flavor, but it could've used a bit more acidity. The kale salad was really yummy as well. I really liked the croutons, toasted hazelnuts, and anchovy dressing. But it was wayyyyy too overdressed, which made the dish a bit sickening.
