Good news, the grilled beef tenderloin crustini still rules the planet! What an amazing dish that is. The sausage lasagna could quite possibly be the heaviest and most amazing lasagna I have ever put in my mouth. Great dish. Service is always spot on. Very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu, and then they leave you the hell alone until dessert time. And let me tell you, if you're looking for a cozy date spot, you should definitely consider Zelo and secure one of their small half-circle tables (the kind where it's so cozy they need to pull the table out so you can get in). You can't help but sit on top of each other (and that is a good thing). Italian the way it should be done - romantically. I'm not a really big fan of 5 star ratings. I feel like most businesses can make some improvements, so giving them this type of rating will basically say they're perfect. To this day (I've eaten there a few weeks ago), I still cannot think of one reason why I shouldn't give them a perfect score. I absolutely adored this place. Located in Downtown Minneapolis, this Italian restaurant just has it all. Food was so good, I even thought about living out there part time. The hostess upon entry was beyond kind. This was a first for me...their entire wine/drink menu was on an iPad. Full explanation of all drinks helped ease the process of choosing what would pair with your food. I really wish I could remember the name of the waiter. This guy was simply amazing. Never in my life did I have a waiter that thorough. The man knew the menu perfectly! Even gave a few suggestions on what items are most popular. Supplied the table with endless amounts of bread (which was delicious) and even gave increments on when the food would be ready for service. Kudos to that guy! Now onto the entree. Mannnnnn this lasagna with meat sauce? WOO! You could tell that the pasta was made in-house...since it basically melted in my mouth. A full meal with minimal chewing?? I felt like a baby! My two trips to here were only on special occasion, and it's mostly because I'm cheap *cough. Then again, this place has the perfect setting for a date night - hushed and serene while exhilarating-ly Italian! My friend and I got ourselves a glass of wine for a wholesome experience but I'm not a wine connoisseur by any mean, so ordering wine anywhere always dings me on the restaurant experience in general. The waiter responsible for our table during my last visit was extra pleasant so, admittedly, the service contributed to most of my rating in this review. The one star missing? I love Minneapolis. I mean, I LOVE it. I grew up near here, and I would visit the Espresso Royale in Dinkytown and pretend I was a college student well before I could even pass as pubescent. That said, something I think Minneapolis, as a whole, needs to work on is outdoor seating at restaurants. Maybe it's because the outdoor area is only used for about three months each year. Though, I think St. Paul does an okay job with outdoor seating, so perhaps it's a big city thing. Either way, Zelo has some outdoor seating that would be lovely if it weren't for the smelly buses grunting their way up and down Nicollet Mall during your first course. And, it's just roped off of the sidewalk, creating a situation in which dining customers are within kissing distance of every drunken tourist and homeless vagabond who happens to be staggering by. Which can be charming in a hip, urban, get-to-know-the-city environment, but Zelo is trying to be FANCY. And kissing homeless people is not fancy, in my book. The food was good. Four stars for food. The waitress was a surly mess. Two stars for service. The location is fantastic, but loud. Three stars for location. (That said, I never did step INto the restaurant. Busy area in downtown Minneapolis with a quiet getaway. From inside the decor seems whimsical and the food feels like mamma's cooking. The waitstaff was very kind and happy to give recommendations. We got 2 glasses of wine, some bruschetta and brussel sprouts to start with. We also got margarita pizza and salad. The brussel sprouts were honey glazed and sweeter than we expected but still very tasty. Pizza was oven baked and thin Italian style. We really enjoyed our meal! read more

I went here years ago, but it was so memorable that I just have to review it. Luckily my boyfriend at the time had won a $100 gift card to the restaurant, or two high-school students like us never would have been able to afford a place like that. That's the only reason I'm giving it 4-stars, because if you want to go for a full meal and dessert, you can easily end up spending a hundred bucks. The experience was superb, though, and would be well worth the money if you can afford it. We got an appetizer of the BEST calamari I have had in my life. I got the veal for my entree and that was delicious as well. The service was incredible. They practically had a choreographed routine between the waiter who would bring and take away plates and then this guy who would scrape the table and make everything look all nice. I almost felt like applauding, but that might have disturbed the mellow atmosphere. As someone who lives and works downtown, I have made my way to Zelo many times over the years. I have done all sorts of meals here: Expense account dinners. Quick lunch meetings. Cheap Happy Hour eats with my wife. The quick to go counter around the corner. In any situation, Zelo always delivers. With so many reviews, i am not going to add anything new, but I will point out a few of the dishes I really like here. The chicken parm with spaghetti makes you feel like you're at a wedding reception in New Jersey. The seafood and linguini is one of the better pasta dishes i have had in the Twin Citites. I've gone down this path a number of times over the years. The lasagna you get at the take out counter (Zellino) is the best in town and perfect for bring back to the desk. read more

One of the most consistent places in downtown Minneapolis. Many travels to the Twin Cities (since college!) have proven that Zelo is top-notch. My most recent trip was probably not the best service-wise (I don't recommend eating your entire meal at the bar), but the food was great. Oysters were delicious, ahi tuna with avocado and edamame was outstanding, the wild mushroom salad with steak was amazing (where do they FIND those mushrooms?), and they use real grapefruit juice in their greyhounds. Delicious. Unlike Stephanie, I can resist the bread. Especially when the drunk stranger next to me eats the basket that's clearly been set in front of me. I love the dining room, especially in winter. It's nice in summer, but it's particularly cozy in winter, and the bar (which goes a little less crazy with decor) is always a great place to meet folks for a post-work or pre-evening out set of drinks. The dark paneled walls, bar, and banquettes give a subdued feeling, but the windows open to 9th Street bring in the life of the city (or just the valets!). SIGH: I miss the hot, tall, shaved-head waiter who was there for awhile. He made the trip worth it in the middle of the winter (I would have done it OUTSIDE the skyway in -20 weather for him - serious). TIP: They have a take-out window in the alley behind the restaurant, and if you call ahead, they'll make you anything off the menu. So on June 29th I made a reservation via their website zelomn.com for July 4th at 7:00pm and received a confirmation email from Zelo soon thereafter. So imagine my shock and dismay when I showed up on July 4th at 7:00pm to find out they were closed for the July 4th holiday, and they did not have the courtesy to email me that unfortunate information. Okay, I officially love Zelo. It was one of those relationships where you start out as friends and then one day you think to yourself... I love Zelo. I am totally butt crazy in love with Zelo (Clueless quote anyone?) Since transitioning to the paleo lifestyle going out to eat has become a little more of a hassle. No dairy, no gluten, no legumes... etc. Zelo has made this seamless for me several times now and I really, truly appreciate it. All the waitstaff have been more than happy to run back to the kitchen and ask about ingredients for me. I'm also a huge fan that they use so many local options for meat and produce. High five Zelo. I had the Chicken Fennel soup today (special) which was amazingly flavorful and void of any of the things I am avoiding. I also had the Brasiliana salad which I wasn't all that excited about to be honest. It came out, all unassuming, and DESTROYED my expectations. The Heirloom Grain Salad has earned my vote for the best salad in a Twin Cities restaurant. Whether you're vegetarian, vegan or just like unique salads, it's definitely worth trying and, like me, you'll probably be back many times. The salad is available at sister restaurants Bacio in Minnetonka, Ciao Bella in Bloomington and Zelo in downtown Minneapolis. The Heirloom Grain Salad not only tastes delicious and looks fantastic, it's made of vegetables and grains, so it's healthy as well. The ingredients include chopped spinach, grape tomatoes, hearts of palm, avocado, asparagus, red pepper and green onion combined with organic quinoa and heirloom farro (similar to barley) and tossed in a light olive oil and lemon dressing. It does have Provolone and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, which they are happy to hold for vegans. The salad is available as a starter for $7.95, which is a perfect size for lunch, or as an entrée for $11.95. Not to be missed, the table olive oil is fragrant and floral Monini brand - amazing with the house bread. The same oil is used in the salad dressing. This was the best meal I had while in Minneapolis for the week. The service was impressive--fast, friendly, and accommodating. The decor was fun and funky (my table itself was this strange oblong thing that looked kind of like a leaf) which provided the perfect atmosphere to come with a bunch of friends or colleagues for a nice meal. The food was delectable. The bread that they bring out is so delicious, it was hard to stop myself from eating it all before the meal. When my food came out, I was so impressed. It was just a soup and sandwich, but I was blown away. The bread was perfectly grilled so that it wouldn't get soggy as you ate. And the soup was so well made I thought about ordering another soup to go. The clientele could be described as a blend of young up-and-comers and middle aged women with a bit too much time on their hands, but the energetic waitstaff keeps the place from getting pretentious. That was the table my friends and I sat at. It was like talking across island. Weird. Anyways, overall...Zelo was good! The apps were incredible (think super crab cakes) and the pasta..oh the pasta. I had the Tortiglioni Rossa. Molinari Sicilian sausage, sweet peas, roasted peppers and Romana Rossa sauce. Amazeballs. The prices were just about right and overall service was good. This is a swanky place. The kind of place where the waitstaff wears little tuxedo-like ensembles and have PhD's in menuology. The kind of place where the wines come from places you've never heard of and the side dishes require translation. It's fun if you're in the mood for some upscale, semi-pretentious fine dining. The food comes at a premium price but it was very good and far beyond the average meal. I had the pesto crusted sea bass and found it to be perfectly cooked and appropriately seasoned. High ceilings, bustling crowd, great vibe. A little bit hard to hear (or I could totally see that being an issue for my parents with the high ceilings and tons of tables in close proximity). We started with mussels -- they were delicious. Tomato based and saffron infused broth. Compared to our usual mussel experiences, we found them to be pretty light with the sauce/broth portion! for entrees, I got the Linguine de mare and hubby got the house ravioli. Both were awesome. They list a large and small portion of each pasta -- word of advice, the small isn't lunch sized or generous - it's tapas size. So get the large one if you're wanting an entree! My linguine was very flavorful, chock full of fish (white fish, mussels, shrimp, scallops) -- I often order seafood pasta and this one was off the charts. I loved that the sauce was tomato based and not laden with cream. It was perfect. Husband's ravioli was really good- very rustic style. Large ravioli with chunks of tomatoes, basil and garlic. Stuffed with cheese. YUM! We split the recommended pretzel, nutella gelato, espresso dessert that our waiter recommended. It was tasty! Gelato was creamy and rich. All in all, loved our experience. I came here on a Sunday night with my girlfriend the day after the 4th of July. We are both college students (not from Minnesota) and had high expectations based on the prices and the reviews. This restaurant definitely exceeded all our expectations. To start, the service was great. Every member of the staff was friendly and attentive. Granted, there were only three tables of customers inside, and five outside. We also got there an hour before close, so they weren't particularly busy. We ordered the small plate of Parmesan Crusted Shrimp to begin. Very tasty and perfectly prepared. Came with probably 12-15 shrimp, which was perfect to split as an appetizer. My girlfriend ordered the Pesto Crusted Sea Bass. Having never had bass before, she enjoyed the fish and the other flavors on the plate. It came with both regular and wasabi mashed potatoes, but they weren't anything special, and the wasabi was much tamer than I would've hoped. All in all, she said it was worth the price. Since they didn't have chicken available (the waiter was very apologetic), I couldn't get my staple Chicken Parmesan. Instead, I tried the Linguine Di Mare with shrimp, scallops, and fish. I passed on the mussels (I'm not that ambitious), and the waiter mentioned that he would tell the chef to add more of the other seafood to the plate. Since it wasn't in the larger plates section, I was skeptical of the portion size, but it was definitely enough for one, maybe two. Everything tasted amazing. One of the best seafood pasta plates I've ever had, if not the best. If you like everything in the pasta, I definitely recommend ordering it. To close out the evening, we ordered the Chocolate and Pretzel Affogato. (Worth noting -- I have tried coffee twice and don't like the taste or smell.) Everything about it was delicious. Every bite tasted a little different, but each one had its own unique combination of vanilla, caramel, and pretzel. The espresso was flavorful, strong, and not at all off-putting, and they were very generous with the cookie pieces towards the bottom. It was the perfect end to an amazing meal. TL;DR I would give Zelo a 6/5 if I could. Service, entrees, dessert -- everything was well worth it. Decided to try this place for New Years Eve, which I realize can be dangerous but nonetheless - WOW! What a great place. The ambiance is great. Our waiter was extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. My dad ordered a Manhattan and I had the pineapple martini, both of which were delicious. My date ordered the spicy crab spaghetti which was SO good and so spicy. I ordered the special of lobster linguine. Recently dined here on a Friday night when my husband and I were in town for the Vikings-Cowboys game. We had a reservation for 8:15pm, which I was glad because we walked in and it was crowded! The place has a nice atmosphere, and it's a pretty big place (I didn't realize there was a entire bar area until I walked through it to go to the restroom). Our waitress was friendly and gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu. We had the calamari to start and it was delicious. It was breaded and fried lightly and the lemon aioli was delicious. I had my mind made up that I was going to have the lasagna until the waitress recommended the seasonal special of the sweet corn and rock shrimp linguine. I got the large portion and it was so, so good! I like it when a waiter recommends something and it actually is delicious. My husband got the ravioli and he was also satisfied. Even though we were stuffed, we couldn't pass the up the buodini (spelling?), which was a chocolate lava cake w/vanilla gelato. Again, it came highly recommended by our waitress and it was the perfect portion of a desert to share. Being used to Chicago restaurants/pricing, it was nice to see our check for under $100--even though we both had a drink, one appetizer, two entrees and one desert. By now I should know that Downtown simply means $$$. But I mean, everyone would like to believe that high prices means pretty dishes and out-of-this-world food. Yes to the former, but not so much to the latter. Zelo is a beautiful restaurant, don't get me wrong. But if I wanted to go somewhere to be wowed by beauty, I'd buy a ticket to Japan to see Mount Fuji--but that's just me. The food was okay and not worth the hefty price tag. We ordered three starters: half order of Calamari Fritti, the Ahi Tuna Crisps, and the Local Tomato Bruschetta. The Calamari were deliciously tender and light, and I must admit the tuna crisps stole the show--the fresh tuna paired well with the fatty avocado and sweet soy. The bruschetta on the other hand was nothing special, and unfortunately the bread was overly drenched in olive oil, resulting in soggy bread. For my main, I ordered the half order of the Spring Green Risotto, with sweet baby peas, thyme chicken, crispy bacon bits, and Reggiano. The serving size was perfect, and the first bite was creamy and decadent, however, after five or so mouthfuls, I found the dish to be overly salty. My mom ordered the Linguine di' Mare, dad the Parmesan Chicken, and brother the Lasagne--all very mediocre dishes. If you're looking to impress a date or colleagues with beautiful decor, or looking for inspiration to revamp your home's interior, then Zelo is the place to be. But if authentic, not to mention very affordable, Italian food is on the agenda, I'd suggest Rinata--they give you free refills on the most heavenly Focaccia bread (I don't care if you're religious or not, you'll hear the angels singing). read more

Excellent service, excellent food, great ambience... yeah, it's a good dinner out, and you pay accordingly. Parmesan-crusted shrimp were great, and the aioli was too -- at 10, it was easily enough for two to split as a starter. Salads other than the plain baby greens ($6) are fairly pricey ($9 and up for a side salad) -- but again, excellent. I had the Ciao Baby with goat cheese and pine nuts, and the baby greens were fresh and delicious, the dressing present without being too much. The lasagna with sausage: Amazing. The sausage was *just* spicy enough to give some kick and noticeable flavor, without making the heat a dominant force in the flavor profile. I love that in an Italian dish. And it was a generous portion -- about twice what I would call a "serving, easily 6 x 3" and stacked tall. Service excellent: I came in and the desk host immediately asked if I wanted to check the suitcase I had with me. My waiter was super attentive, to the point where I felt a little ashamed of being so busy with my laptop. :) Chocolate flourless cake was amazing: light and airy, with yummy vanilla gelato and no unnecessary froufrou nonsense. I really loved the feel of the place. A grand dining room greets you right when you walk in. Crab Cakes - Amazing. Some of the best i've ever had. Butternut squash Ravioli - Also awesome, al dente with a lot of flavor. Not very filling though. Chicken and Mushroom risotto - forgettable, wouldn't recommend. Service, like others have said, was weird. My brother and I both noticed the waitress rolled her eyes when I said we weren't having anything to drink. I found Zelo on Yelp of course and it was only a few blocks from my hotel...a pasta craving and an individual celebration = perfecto! I sat at the bar and was immediately served my Moscow Mule....which did not come in a copper mug. The bartender explained that there is less Ginger Beer and more lime so it didn't need to oxidize. Ok! The mushroom linguine was out of this world! Plenty of mushrooms and I could tell that the pasta was made fresh which is a big bonus in my book. Warm bread to accompany....and the grain and heirloom salad was a true delight. I could have literally licked the plate because of the flavor! Although that may have been for the best because it started to rain. There was able seating inside but it was all very dark and heavy feeling. The food was expensive but satisfying. I was very pleased with my lunch at Zelo. While wandering the Skyway in search of a restaurant with some great salad options, I happened upon this restaurant. I started off with a cup of the tomato basil soup, which was outstanding. The depth of the flavor was incredible, and lingered in the mouth for quite some time. The few croutons that were provided had a nice soggy/crispy mix that released nice spice flavors upon consumption. I think next time I'll ask for an extra handful of croutons on the side! I selected the ciao baby salad with a grilled chicken breast. Great dish. The greens were fresh and the goat cheese had great creaminess without being too sweet. I was expecting the added chicken breast to be a little saltier. What it lacked in salt, it added with great moisture and flavors of black pepper and olive oil. Nice grilled crisp as well. In all my years of living in Mpls, finalllyy went here for a late dinner last Monday. First thing's first - these servers need to be dropping their names because I was not in the right mind to ask (could've been the Chardonnay idk..) and the service in the main dining area was just too good not to be jotting something down to walk away with! Our water and general server were 5-star worthy (again, last Monday around 9pm in the dining area for all you managers checking this :)). The food is amazing. Didn't get anything too major but I can tell you the Ahi Tuna crisp (small plates) is to die for. About 13 dollars it has the perfect rice roll crunchy wrap, tuna was very fresh, and the sauces were something I've never had before. Something like a thick wasabi sauce paired with a unique sweet soy sort of blended together across the plate. Ahh! I think I changed into a better person or something after eating that dish. The edamame was perfect as well. Wine was fair priced, didn't hear anything about a late happy hour but that didn't seem to stop us. Cool thing was the iPad menus they had on the table. I'm sure if I tapped through the thing I would have found some info on a happy hour time. Atmosphere was elegant/classic. Beautiful decor and great table seating. Parking is wherever you can find it, because it is located on Nicollet Mall, in Downtown Mpls..I would come back here anytime any day, until I go bankrupt. read more
