Sweet potato

Buchêron is an absolute gem. Located at the corner of East 43rd Street and Nicollet, it's a beautiful and intimate restaurant that is perfect for anyone hoping to enjoy a wonderful meal with the people they care about, be they friends, families, or that special someone. Even when the restaurant is full, you can still carry a conversation. The vibe is both elegant and relaxed, and the decor unique and interesting--check out the bark on the walls in the corridor and the mirrored walls perfect for people watching. The service is exquisite--our server Pocket was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and her recommendations never steered us wrong. Her descriptions of Amari? Pure poetry. The menu harmonizes perfectly with the restaurant theme--hearty yet refined, creative while comforting, and the perfect balance of local and international. (And the beverage menu? Also exquisite--they have drinks for everyone, from beer lovers to wine connoisseurs to the zero proof tipplers like myself. Their N/A bubbles? Superlative!) I ordered what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful salads I have ever seen--the Spring Salad. In addition to the tender baby lettuce, this salad features peas, mint leaves, and pickled radishes, all tossed in a beautifully balanced vinaigrette. It comes topped with lovely soft goat cheese that is drizzled with honey and crowned with a kataifi nest. The blend of textures and flavors is truly a delight. For my main, I had the sweet potato, which was spectacular. I had never had a sweet potato treated as lovingly and am likely now ruined for all other preparations. The sweet potato is meltingly tender throughout but is caramelized on top, creating a unique and pleasing textural contrast. The salty Parmesan risotto is the perfect foil for the sweetness of the potato (and slight bittersweetness of the caramelization), and the crisp daikon strips added a lovely fresh crunch. Add in some bok choy for freshness and a hint of grilled flavor and black currants for a few pops of sweet-tart-astringence, and you've got a dish unlike any other that I have found. Dessert was a grand slam. Not only was I persuaded to share, I also did that happy-dance chair shimmy for each sweet treat, and I would be hard pressed to pick my favorite, so my advice is to order them all. The sticky toffee cake was marvelous. As the granddaughter of an Englishwoman, I know and love sticky toffee pudding. This is an excellent sticky toffee pudding. I admit that I was somewhat suspicious of the accompaniments, but I was oh so wrong. Mandarin orange sorbet is delicious and goes beautifully, as does the toasted hazelnut. The gianduja? Also wonderful. This dessert is a winner. The cinnamon roll is like getting a bear hug while someone soothingly strokes your hair. It tastes exactly like "I love you and want to make you smile." It's warm and served with sorghum syrup and a lovely cream cheese ice cream (which is happily a thing that exists). Candied pecans and orange zest? Yes, this tastes just like love and nostalgia. Finally, we had the cookies and cream, which is a unique and highly successful interpretation of the classic flavor combination. Milk sherbet, a chewy cocoa macaron, and vanilla custard may not be the textures that you immediately think of when you think cookies and cream, but it works very well. It's a very fun and very tasty interpretation of this flavor. It also has the fun addition of lemon verbena, so what is not to love? We all had a wonderful time. Thanks to Bûcheron, Tyler, Pocket, and the whole team for making this such a wonderful evening!

It was a really hot day so my favorite dish by far was the chilled pea soup. The creaminess of the burrata and the crunch from the croutons came together deliciously. The trout dip was another great way to start the meal. Lovely smokey flavor with a burst of trout roe on top. The venison tartare was delicious as well, a bit gamey but not overpoweringly so. It had a creamy mouthfeel and I always enjoy alternatives to beef tartare. The bone marrow was so decadent. A guilty pleasure for sure. The mains were all delicious. The pasta was creamy and lobster perfectly cooked. A little on the salty side but I enjoy that. The hake was light and soft with the crunch of the topping offsetting that delicate texture nicely. The sauces also complimented the fish well and didn't overpower it. The chicken was slightly sweet and super juicy. The wild rice was delicious too. Lastly, dessert. The raved about cookies and cream was very tasty. Super light and fluffy cream on a chocolate macaron that reminded me of a fudgy dense brownie. It was super easy to eat. Service was good, did have to overhear about the special bone marrow from across the room instead of our waitress telling us about it but other than that it was great. The space is definitely packed tight which can make it a bit of a squeeze to get out of the booth.

Braised rabbit with papparedelle pasta

What is not to like? Just in town for the weekend to visit my daughter so didn't have reservations. It is a very small dining room and reservations are made weeks in advance. That's what happens at a James Beard Restaurant. They do take walk-ins at the bar where they have 10 seats or at the counter at the window where they have 4 seats. Called ahead but got voicemail and didn't leave a message. Less than five minutes later I get a callback from the Restaurant asking if I had a question. Had a conversation with the nicest guy, Joseph. He said we might have good luck if we came right away even though we were 15 minutes out. When we arrived, he had actually reserved two spots at the bar for us. He didn't tell us he had done that, and it isn't policy to do it. I can't tell you how nice that was of him. That's the kind of thing that builds loyalty to your restaurant. The great service continued with Will at the bar. He was friendly, helpful and so knowledgeable about the food and the cocktails. He made another huge difference in our fantastic experience. Onto the food. Portions may seem small to some, but they were perfectly proportioned to enable you to have multiple courses. Prices are reasonable for the quality you receive. We started with the bone marrow and venison tartare starters. Both delicious and highly recommended. Some patrons next to us had the lobster spaghetti, and upon seeing it and hearing them tell us how delicious it was, we decided to order it as a mid course dish to share. The presentation was spectacular. Several perfectly cooked chunks of lobster were on top of the spaghetti. The lobster was delicious and the pasta was cooked just right but the sauce was a bit too heavy chive flavored for us. That's a personal taste preference but I probably wouldn't order it again. That was the only dish the night we did not think was fantastic. For entrées we shared the rainbow trout and the braised rabbit in Pappardelle pasta. Great presentations, perfectly cooked, and the flavor was simply delicious in both dishes. We highly recommend them both. We almost skipped dessert, but how could you do that in this restaurant? We went for the cookies and cream, which is one of their signature dishes and we were not sorry we ordered it. So delicious!

Bûcheron wasn't on my radar until I read about the James Beard and instantly made a reservation for a Wednesday night. First impression is that the restaurant is cute, on the smaller side, but has a nice vibe. Tables are real real close together, so this isn't the place to have a private conversation. The dining sounds really drown out other people's conversations, but it also makes it hard to hear the person you're sitting across from -- not ideal for a first date. At the suggestion of our waitress, we ordered 8 dishes for two people and only left a few bites of the second dessert (mostly due to not loving it rather than being uncomfortably stuffed) Hamachi CRUDO: AMAZING! The saltiness of the Hamachi was nicely balanced with the sweetness of the watermelon. Everything was thinly sliced, and I could have eaten a bowl of it. BEET SALAD: This was so so sooooo delicious and the quinoa crumble added such great crunch to the texture of the beets in the salad. NIÇOISE salad: The greens were fine. My husband said he would have wanted another type of green mixed in with the arugula. But the tuna was out of this world. It had this buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, soft and silky thing going on that reminded me of eating really good wagyu. We also ordered the lamb chops, halibut, and ravioli (listed in order of most favorite to least favorite). The ravioli was fine, but I wouldn't order it again. I would definitely order the lamb chops again, and would try something new before I ordered the halibut again. None of them were bad, but they simply were as good as I would have expected at that price point. For dessert we had the cookies and cream and the angel food cake. We fought over the last bites of the C&C, and left about half the angel food cake. Bathroom was super cute as well! On the menus, on the website, and in the check presenter was a message that said: "Prices include an 18% Hospitality Charge, which is distributed among the full restaurant team." Is a hospitality charge the same thing as gratuity? I assumed not, but it generally felt like an over-communicated element of the experience; which is what I would expect if it were gratuity. I just want that to be more clear.

A really incredible spot that is elevating the MSP dining scene. We snagged a midweek reservation here after hearing about their James Beard award over one of our Seattle favorites (Atoma), we knew they must be doing something right here and we weren't disappointed at all. The cocktail program was full of interesting things it was hard to pick just one. We had lovely service that helped us wade through the menu and pick out dishes that looked interesting the liver mousse was a standout to both of us, through its not something we usually jump at on a menu it was highly recommended and the silky texture stood out from anything I'd had in a while. Great work they are doing here and we hope the creativity continues.

We walked into this adorable restaurant without a reservation on a Friday night and they were able to seat us at the bar. To be honest, I can't recall all the dishes we tried but every single thing we had was incredible. You can't go wrong here. Drinks are also phenomenal! It sounds like they change up the menu a fair amount so cannot wait to come back. This is our favorite dining experience since we've arrived in the Twin Cities!

Had a 5 course dinner here though a dining club The food was excellent and presented beautifully Was able to meet Chef Adam and we had some Q&A with him so nice to hear his background and love for cooking The cookies and cream dessert is so special you need to try it - the wine choices were great and the staff were great Will come back and belly up to the bar for drinks and dessert again for sure Their is a small shared parking lot otherwise street parking can be tricky in winter

Came here for our anniversary dinner and had a wonderful time. It's a small, but cute space. Staff are friendly and helpful. The food also came out in good timing. The dishes are shareable. We tried the ocean trout crudo, pumpkin and tomato soup, spaghetti, butternut squash agnolotti, and venison dish. The dishes were fantastic, our favorites were the pastas. We also had ice cream for our anniversary dinner that was a sweet surprise. Definitely would come back and try more of the other items on the menu!

Had a great meal at Bucheron. My favorites were the spaghetti which was very tasty, done al dente and the sticky toffee cake. Dishes are smaller so they recommended ordering several to share.

Went here for my wedding anniversary and was blown away by everything on the menu! Super quaint little place with very friendly and helpful staff. Food comes out pretty quickly as they recommend ordering 2-3 dishes to share per person. The venison tartare was out of this world. Will be back just to get more of that!

Laura C.

Delectable! From the friendly staff, the cozy comfort vibes to the outstanding food! The venison tartare was out of this world and have thought about after day since having it! I would fallow their recommendations on the amount of plates to get. The only thing I don't think I would need again was the halibut, it was very tasty but felt like the other dishes were show stoppers!

sticky Toffee pudding - SOOO GOOD
Claire L.

Small, Quaint, dimly lit ambiance was absolutely the best place to dine with my friend. The service was impeccable with seamless silverware and table wipe resets after each course. I would come back and try other dishes. I think what we ordered, we weren't blown away at the price point - except for the sticky toffee pudding. I think any dessert would be good. The POMMES DAUPHINES were good. They are friend potato and cheese ball with a chip like dusting out the crunchy outside. Rich and flavorful on the inside. The gruyere was a perfect pairing being not too saucy but hold its consistency to stick on to the potato. Butternut squash AGNOLOTTI - the pasta in this was really good. Unfortunately the drenching of it in the brown butter and cheese sauce made it too rich. Some nice little bites of flavor with the prunes and chestnuts. Celery root TORTELLINI - probably our favorite savory dish of the night. The broth was deep in a nutty chicken flavor and contrasted well with the sweetness of the celery root creamy in the tortellini. The mushrooms are meaty and just go so well in the dish. SPAGHETTI, Brussels sprouts, caulini, brown butter, maitake mushrooms, guanciale - was probably the most disappointing. It is a mix of french ingredients with a small asian twist in the way that it is more of a stir fry. We found this dish to be a bit dry and lacking flavor other than the hint of fattiness from the guanciale. There are a lot of yummy veggies that were cooked well but then not much else to the dish. The breadcrumbs were a welcomed texture but exacerbated the dryness of the dish. STICKY TOFFEE cake - a real winner here. The cake was moist and paired well with the citrus of the orange. The mandarin orange sorbet was amazing and a nice substitute for the vanilla ice cream you see at other places. Can't forget the chocolate sand which is all the rage now and its good!!

Foie gras

What an honor it was to experience Bûcheron! You'll or need to park on street as lot behind restaurant is small Everything over the top! What makes this place special is the leadership of the owners to make it truly a neighborhood restaurant. To be the James Beard restaurant of the year in the United States is truly amazing and a special place! We were lucky to get a seat at bar before dinner and the Old Fashioned was served with single clear cube which I really enjoy. My wife had a French 75 spritzer Really fine! We had the Glidden point oysters with rose mignonette to start. Fresh and did not disappoint. Not huge but satisfying! Moved onto the Venison tartare with egg yolk , spruce tips and rye chips. Then foie gras. Both were treats to the taste buds terrine, sour cherry, nectarine jam with a warm scone. The scone was over the top. The foie gras was probably the best I have ever experienced. Also enjoyed a couple glasses of rose. The Vandouvan Curry Pappardelle, rabbit ragout, peas and carrots, Parmesan and Thai basil was another treat. Probably my favorite was the Nettle and sheep milk ricotta ravioli. A little salty but I loved it! Cookies and Cream: milk sorbet, cocoa macaron, vanilla custard and lemon verbena! How can you not try this ? Take a look at pics. Was surprised by reasonable prices. They include a 18% service fee. They services was great so we added gratuity on top. This is a must "go to" restaurant. Was even lucky enough to get a parking space in their lot! Go and enjoy the experience of a lifetime!

This place does get busy so definitely keep that in mind. Luckily I made reservations ahead of time so we had a table waiting for us, otherwise we would have been put on a waiting list since it's a small space. They put us in a corner booth which was nice and spacious enough for 4 people so I'd definitely recommend asking for a booth verse a table if you're planning to come with a larger group. The servers are all very friendly and helpful. I appreciated their attentiveness and sharing what they like best, especially for what's in season based on the time of year. The menu has quite a bit of variety too which is sometimes unexpected when you come to a pub-style location. For appetizers we got Onion Ring and Fried Pickles. They were both really good and served with dipping sauces. Definitely both shareable items so if you're in a group they'd be great options! My entree I chose the Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon served with lemon soy marinade, creamy cucumbers, and jasmine rice -- it was SO good!! I loved the creaminess of the cucumbers especially with the rice and than the lemon soy marinade was just a unique touch to the salmon. Toned the flavors down without overpowering acidity. And the salmon was so dreamy, a beautiful pink color that you just knew it wasn't a farm raised salmon. Plus the portion was very generous!! I'd definitely recommend the Alaskan Sockeye Salmon to anyone interested in visiting here. #eatwildsavewild The only negatives (which are more so just knowledge bombs for you): * Restaurant is VERY loud. It's hard to hear because it is one small room that everyone plus the bar is in. I wished I would have took a picture to show what I mean. Just know that if it's an intimate setting you're looking for this is not the place. So be prepared to talk loudly over the loudness and ask "excuse me?" or "repeat that" many times throughout your visit because you're not going to hear everything. * Timed eating. Because this place is a hit with limited seating, once you get a table and complete your meal/payment you'll kindly be asked to leave so that they can clean up and open the table to next in line. Totally get that and am not put off by this at all, but I could see how it could catch some folks off guard especially if you are out for a meal with folks you may not see frequently-- so just keep that in mind. This is not the place to sit and talk post meal. * Parking is limited. Be prepared to walk a few blocks as the road parking in front of the business is pretty limited especially with the other stores and restaurants in the area. Regardless of those few bullets I highly recommend folks visit George & The Dragon. It's a really cool spot and the food was great! Plus theirs a malt shop right next door that looks yummy too, so definitely worth visiting and getting malts after for dessert.

Nightingale was packed, but fortunately, once two patrons saw my face from the bar, they quickly paid their bill and left. My face often compels people to vacate crowded establishments in Minneapolis, and we often find seats. After grabbing the two seats, we ordered wine and a wonderful Amaro-based cocktail. Jules was our bartender/server, and although he was crazy busy, he found time to be gracious to us. We ordered the meatball appetizer, halibut, and the Nightingale hamburger. My halibut was sublime, cooked perfectly, and it wasn't drowned in sauce. Bravo! The meatballs were tender and delicious, but the hamburger was not memorable. It was good, not great. Despite all the accolades above, when the bill came, I was charged two dollars after requesting a cucumber slice for my Pimms Cup. Perhaps the source of this pettiness came from the kitchen, but it wasn't smart, because the $2.00 charge placed a shroud over my experience. The bill was $125, and because of the petty two-buck charge, I only left a $25 tip. I was going to leave a $30 tip. I will sadly remember those 2 bucks forever. It was a myopic move and a passive-aggressive way to handle my request. In my birthplace home of NYC, a bartender would have said, "Getting a cucumber slice is a pain in the rear, would you mind skipping it?" My response, "Sure, it's not a big deal."

The service was genuinely friendly and pleasant throughout our visit, which went a long way. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting. I tried the NY Strip special, which was fine but nothing memorable - exactly what you'd expect, no more, no less. The oysters were disappointing for the price point; the quality just wasn't there. The mushroom bruschetta similarly underwhelmed - it felt like it was missing something to make it stand out. The bright spot? The drinks were solid and well-crafted. I wanted to rate this higher based on the atmosphere and service alone, but at the end of the day, the food has to deliver. With so many great options in Minneapolis, Nightingale needs to step up its culinary game to match its lovely setting. I'd consider returning for drinks, but probably not for dinner.
