Went again for lunch today and took my mom who is an amazing Mexican cook. She gave Valerie's 2 thumbs up!! We were there about 2pm and the place was packed out!! Food was good there Carne asada fries wasn't that great, fries were soggy not much of a flavor everything was just bland. Ordered a surf and turf burrito that was consumed later in the day and the burrito was good more carne asada than shrimp. The burrito size was good had to split with daughter because I couldn't eat even half. Churros were the best strawberry filling perfect crunch just delicious. Customer service was ok first cashier was a little lost where he took my order started cooking and second cashier finished taking my order but the first guy didn't even finish making my order so we had to wait for burrito. read more

Food was pretty good but the service is terrible. We called in an order with several tacos plus beans and rice. After we picked up the order and drove home we noticed they forgot a few items from the order. We checked the receipt and the missing items were listed, so I gave them a call. When I explained what happened to the call taker they said it would be 10min. So we drove on back and ended up waiting an additional 10min at the Taco stand. No apology and no discount on the order. We left a tip when we initially paid and totally regretted it once this whole ordeal unfolded. Also, when we went back the same thing happened to another lady in line. To me this could have been resolved with a discount on the items missing and an apology. read more

Stopped by for lunch yesterday and it was so disappointing. The chicken in the chicken burrito was absolutely covered in grease, to the point that the bottom of it was leaking from all the excess. It was almost inedible. The pico in all of our meals tasted like it had been made a few days ago and refrigerated and had started to turn. It gave a very unpleasant flavor. This place is off the hook. Came in here on a Tuesday for the first time, hoping for a Taco Tuesday special of some sort. Welp, slap me upside the head, but they don't do such silly things. Buy a taco or pound sand! Just kidding of course, but honestly I didn't mind paying for 2 tacos + small refillable fountain drink (just under $8)... I left full and happy! The fresh homemade corn tortillas gave the large tacos a nice je ne sais quoi, and the fillings were plentiful. I had the al pastor, which had great flavor, and the carnitas was tender, moist, and had the crispy edges. One minor point is they added beans to the carnitas taco, which were fine, but if you prefer no frijoles you'll have to tell them. The star of the show, though, was the habanero cream sauce at the salsa bar... lots of heat, but smooth flavor. I wanted to shoot a cup it was so good! I watched the cooks in the open kitchen, and they had some skill, cooking the meat and shrimp to perfection. The fries are fried on order... but not sure about the chips also being heated with the fryer (I didn't have any though). I'm definitely coming here more often... and the pressure is off coming on Tuesdays! Side note: There are 2 EVGo chargers right outside, for all you electric vehicle enthusiasts. In the same parking lot, there are also WinCo, Joann's, an auto parts store, a salon, Board & Brews, a nutrition/supplement store, and a soon-to-be-open donut store. Next door is a Target. Got 2 burritos: carne asada and California. Both were absolutely fantastic! Well seasoned. Good amount of meat. Highly recommended.

This place is fantastic! Head and shoulders above either "hole in the wall" taco shops. The tortillas used for their tacos are thick and soft... definitely not using Mission cardboard tortillas! You can classics here (carnitas, carne asada, etc.) or more creative combos. My favorite are their carnitas tacos. Always have a nice crispy crust, just like I like them! Their tacos come with beans in them, which I don't like. The beans are fine, but I always request to get them on the side or without the beans because I feel like the bean texture interferes with the juiciness of the meat. Personal preference. Everything here has been good, but my least favorite item was the al pastor tacos, but that's probably because Taco Bar in San Marcos have my favorite (go check them out!). Honestly, you can't go wrong with whatever you order. And don't forget to get a drink! The agua frescas are legit. Non of those ¡Bang! style drinks here. If you're looking for some homemade horchata, this is your place. read more

With so many stellar reviews I came into Valerie's with high expectations. Unfortunately, it fell short. The place is very clean and welcoming and the smells off the grill are outstanding but when it's all said an done, the food didn't blow me away. It was solid Mexican food, of which there is a lot in North County, but not the almost 5 stars I was expecting. We got the Surf & Turf, a California burrito, a bean & cheese burrito and the Carne Asada Quesadilla. The Bean & Cheese and the Quesedilla were the best of the bunch for certain but my Surf & Turf and my son's CA Burrito were just ok. Add that to the fact that the girl behind the counter spoke very lightly and was not particularly interested in the customers, the food or anything else and you can see how I was disappointed. So, overall the place is nice, the service was not, and the food was good, not great. I am definitely going to give it another try, get something else and hope to be wowed like everyone else...stay tuned. read more

I've really found a diamond in the rough here, it's incredible! Let me jus say that for the last 7 years or so I've searched for something along the lines of Valeries and have struggle doing so until now. I'll simply state that a typical "authentic" Mexican restaurant should never have "Taco shop" in the name... this name slightly differs so hey it makes a statement and a difference! I truly believe the name directly correlates with the type of food that's offered. Anyways, I finally visited Valeries after months of driving past it as I make my grocery buys at winco. The service is really great, everyone I've dealt with has just seem very grateful for the business they receive. Food is so damn good! Don't settle for mediocracy when Valeries offers well above average quality in its food and prices. My favorites are the Quesadilla de Adobada, Carnitas burrito, Carne Asada tacos, and of course I love topping it off with their habanero sauce PSA: THE SALSAS ARE SPICY! read more

I honestly do not understand all the 5 star reviews of Valerie's. I've picked up food from here a handful of times and decided to try this place one more time yesterday. I ordered the following meal for the two of us and found it to be pricey: 1 al pastor quesadilla $9.50, 1 side of rice and beans (8 oz) $3.49 each, 2 pollo asado tacos $5.50 each and 1 cucumber lime drink (large size) $4.00 for a grand total of $34!! Their food is incredibly SALTY. The cucumber lime drink tasted off like it was sitting for maybe too long that day (we ate around 7p.) Aside from way too much salt getting cooked into the chicken, I did like my pollo asado tacos. The al pastor quesadilla, a generous portion, was not good. It did not taste like al pastor. We threw most of it away. The search for good quality Mexican food continues for me. read more

We're staying in Oceanside this time on our trip where we normally stay in Mission Beach. One thing I missed was being closer to my favorite tacos (don't want to drive the 45-50 mins to Chula Vista to get them). As I was searching around I came across Valerie's Taco Stand. Needless to say I was a skeptic based on the location, newness, and well...name :-). I was pleasantly greeted immediately ... actually even before I walked in! The place is welcoming and clean. Not a ton of seating for a large group, but if you broke it up into a few tables it would work...this is pretty typical of taco stand places though -- we don't go for the seating! I ordered 1 of each of Al Pastor, Fish (fried), and Diablo Shrimp tacos. As I cashed out, the owner had made an extra grilled fish taco and said I should try that too while I waited for mine. Okay, first things first...I would get 3 of the grilled fish tacos. Yum. Diablo Shrimp - good. Fish (fried) - also good. Pastor - good. Grilled Fish - great. They were all really good, the tortillas were hot and fresh and delicious. These aren't typical 'street size' tacos either...and also not obnoxious-I'm-gonna-oversize-your-tortilla size either. Perfect size and PLENTY. Honestly, I think 2 of these would be a good order. But why stop at 2. 3 was good for me and that's what I'd order again. There were hot sauces available as well and I tried the two hot ones...one was like a jalepeno/cilantro one that was good and the other was I assume like a habanero one...I liked that one better...but both were great. The tacos had fresh ingredients on them and the cabbage for the fish/shrimp ones was crisp and delicious. Overall a really surprising find and glad I opened Yelp after my shopping trip for groceries. Hoping to drag the vacation crew back for an evening of tacos before I leave. My only nit is location. It's not terribly convenient if you are staying on the beach areas and just want to walk to a place. This requires driving, but it isn't far like some of the other recommended places people will tell you to go (Encinitas/Carlsbad). If they opened a spot in downtown Oceanside, it would be packed. Listen, I LOOOOVE this place! I really do. But they are so inconstant with making orders correct and very inconsistent for the menu items. I've gone here at least 20 times and every single time something has been wrong with my order. The items I order on the menu don't have pico as an ingredient, but every time they will put it on the tacos. So I've resorted to having to ask for no pico every time I order different tacos but they STILL put the pico on it, even after the cashier told me "oh those don't come with pico". The other thing is there's been a handful of times when I picked my order up and something was completely missing. I hate to leave a 3 star review because i absolutely love this place. Their food is amazing and their potato tacos are to die for. But because I'm somewhat picky with pico de Gallo, it's gotta be 3 stars. Great authentic Mexican cuisine. Portions can be large! I often roll with the shredded beef rolled tacos. I've returned to this place 4 or 5 times. Like their salsa bar: hot carrots, fresh limes, plenty of salsas; both Rojo y Verde. Took one star off for pricing, and I know food prices are up everywhere. I just feel if we want to keep eating out, and the menu hasn't changed much, but the prices have & my "a la carte" tacos set me back $10.00. Dang. I realize prices have increased. It was worth it... as you can see, if the photos are uploaded, the portions are large, almost like a Taco Salad with the lettuce, cheese, etc. I THINK there was a half order of 3 rolled tacos, for like, $5.99; and if so, that will be perfect for me. And many others! To drink, they offer a wide variety of all the usual restaurant beverages, along with about 5 authentic Mexican drinks like Horchata, Jamaica, Cucumber/Lime, Mango & Pineapple. Soooo BOMB!!!! If you are thinking about it, just do it!! This place is legit!! The tortillas are soo good, and the tacos are too!! Came in here the other night, and we had the Cali Taco, Jefa taco, (for bacon lovers) and tacos de Lengua! Soooo good! If you like California burritos you got to try the Cali taco! I have not seen anywhere else that has this! We also had the TJ hot dog, which is really good too, but if you do get this, make it be the first thing you eat, bc the bread May get a bit soggy if you don't. We have go-to Mexican place because surprisingly most taco shops in the area don't have queso fresco but my cousin introduced me to the Cali tacos from here and I've been hooked ever since. I convinced my family to get lunch here today and so glad we did. Might have to change to our go to. I got the Cali tacos add guacamole on one and I highly suggest adding guacamole for a true Cali taste. I liked the tacos without it but after trying with I won't go back. Boyfriend got the carnitas fries and the carnitas was really good. The only warning is the portion is much smaller than other places which isn't necessarily a deal breaker as he can get a taco or quesadilla to fill him up all the way. Be aware the creamy salsa they give is soo hot. Do not pour it generously on your food and take a bite. It's really hot! Love this place, will be back and I recommend you try the Cali tacos with guacamole or anything with carnitas. You won't regret it read more

Unfortunately, I have to knock this place down a few stars. I loved this place. I would make the drive just to come here. I thought they had some of the most flavorful carne asada around. The last three times I've been unable to eat my California burrito. I'm literally pulling all the meat out just so I have some food to eat. It's not fresh tasting or well seasoned. While picking up my food last night I noticed they now pre cook all their meat and have it sit in a bin. It's sad to see quality turn so bad so quick. I will no longer be coming back. I had a Cali taco, a Surf and Turf burrito, and a cantaloupe drink. The food was delicious! Tacos are a good size with a lot of meat, and the meat and foot is very fresh and high quality. We finally turned to walk out and she approached the register to take our order. She did not leave a good impression. Service was alright. We ordered Carne asada fries with just cheese and sour cream for the kids to go. As we were leaving checked our food forgot to put in my burrito so started check other food no meat on the fries. Went back, Cashier said he thought that's what I wanted. he just added meat on top of the fries which was okay. Would been pissed if I got home and found out their was no meat. Checked out this teeny tiny place while visiting. Their Angus steak in the California burrito was seared to perfection! Had one eith sour cream and one with guac. NEITHER ahd very much of the SC or Guac. Barely a small teaspoon full spread out over the entire fat burrito. Disappointed there. Had the 3 mini carnitas tacos. Meat was good. Not very flavorful.
