Bean tostada, very good and big

I've been here 3 times and food is legit good. I was surprised the ratings are not higher. Their burritos are big and filling and you get what you paid for. My wife loves their hard shell tacos, which are also filling. Service has been good and they have out door seating. They do have one television inside. I highly recommend this pllace

First time here, did a take out order. $40 for 2 items of just okay food. I live 8 minutes from here and my burrito had a huge split down the middle. Had to eat it with a fork and knife. Other spots have a sturdier burrito wrap. The nachos fell soggy really fast as well, I was racing against time trying to eat them before they all turned back into corn tortilla flaps. For the price, and the amount of food you get, it was good but the chip and tortilla quality just aren't there for me. Meat was tender and flavorful, not full big strips like other Mexican spots, they were smaller and thinner than I'm used to. Giving 4 stars for cleanliness, taste, and service. Don't feel like they deserve a three star but I won't be going back

    Shrimp burrito

Filling and cheap, a great place to come when hungry or after a night of drinking out. My fiancé and I stopped by here for an early lunch. We ordered inside and got our food within 10 min. Most people drive through so we were the only ones inside. I got the shrimp burrito ($14) and my fiancé got the California burrito ($15). Shrimp burrito was packed with rice beans and shrimp, wasn't the best shrimp I've had but very generous, the red sauce is bomb. My finances burrito was stuffed with steak and fries, with plenty of guacamole. Overall solid Mexican eatery with dank Fud. Wish there was one in OC

A drive through and Burrito and a taco for $22.52. No thanks.

The food was pretty good. The folks that worked there are friendly. The restaurant was clean and well lit. I came here to bitch. So it's not against the food or the management, or the employees. It's about life. I went to HS in Carlsbad in the early 90s. This place was Alberto's. Then I came back and visited. It was Roberto's. Now I'm back and it's Vallarta express. Look at my pictures. When I was in HS in 1993, a carne asada burrito was $2.75. A bean and cheese burrito was $1.75 (when we were broke we would buy that and split it between three HS football players, it weighed 2.5lbs, we called it a "wet sock") These prices are insane. A carne asada burrito is now $13.90. A SINGLE TACO IS $7.00! It's the same fast food drive through! Compared to today: $2.75 in 1993 has the same buying power as approximately $6.17 today (late 2025) I realize that I moved to the free state of Florida. But dang. The cost differential for everything here is totally lopsided.

    Christian fries ($18.25)

Vallarta Express has multiple locations across the San Diego area and like the other ones, this location in Carlsbad is also open 24/7. This location has both indoor and outdoor seating with a small parking lot and drive-through. Since I don't come here as much now, when I do I always get the same thing: christian fries ($18.25). Christian fries are basically carne asada fries with bacon and fried eggs on top. It has all the toppings: carne asada, cheese, guacamole, pico, sour cream, bacon, and eggs. On top of that, I'm obsessed with their red sauce and drench it on every bite. Their red sauce is slightly sweeter than red sauces at other places but it's seriously addicting. Prices have gone up over the years but that doesn't stop me from coming back again and again. Other people have their opinions on what their favorite carne asada fries spot is and this one is mine.

Second time here. Went to Lego land and on the way home the kids requested we stop here again. We switched it up a little this time. Food was great! Big portions , definitely left us full and happy! Great drive thru service , casual ambiance. You can take it to go, or eat in.

Not sure what this was in my breakfast burrito... very sharp and hard, bone like, though could have been a piece of plastic too.

Unfortunately, this place has really gone downhill. I used to love coming here, but today on the very first bite I found a hard, sharp object in my breakfast burrito. Luckily I didn't chip a tooth, let alone eat whatever that was, because I threw the rest out. After seeing other recent reviews mentioning plastic and foreign objects in their food, that seals the deal for me; won't be going here again. Hopefully this safety issue is addressed, because at these prices, there are much better options elsewhere. Super disappointing.

Restaurant is very close to the 5 freeway as well as the Carlsbad Flower Fields and Legoland. I enjoyed the food and fancy-casual ambience. Seems like a fairly large stand-alone restaurant with it's own parking lot. Service was attentive and friendly. We came at the recommendation of a local and loved it! We chose this spot also for the queso that comes with the complimentary chips and salsa. So tasty and not too spicy--like a fresher/?healthier/whiter version of nacho cheese. Mango margarita 4.5/5 (with tajin rim) was enjoyable. Strawberry margarita (blended, virgin) 3/5 was good, but reminded me of candy, so probably just not for me. Trio burrito was outstanding. Loved the sourness of the green salsa over the carnitas, the carne asada with red salsa, and even the shrimp burrito (I don't usually love shrimp!). It tasted lighter than typical Mexican food. Portion was impressive, and it came with a side plate of rice and beans. Chile relleno was 3+/5 imo but my fiance enjoyed it as one of the better ones he has had. To me, it just paled in comparison to the burritos :)). Overall high quality, nice-ish (not too fancy) dinner spot for groups and more! Would recommend to others to add to their Carlsbad/SD area trip.

Well, we walked in and it was the "to-go" entrance but we were able to walk to the front of the restaurant and get a seat. We were seated quickly and my picky mom was able to choose where she wanted to sit. It was a little cold for me, and since we opted to sit in the way back it was a little dim. We were seated and served chips, salsa, and queso blanco dip. The sip was a nice touch. The chips were warm. Of course we had a lot of questions about the menu and our server was very helpful in helping us decide. After eating so many chips and queso, I decided on an appetizer for my meal. I had the empanadas. Mom ordered a bowl of albondigas and a combo plate with cheese enchilada and a taco, with the taco on a separate plate. The albondigas came out first. They were not very hot. Maybe lukewarm. We asked for them to be heated. They did. They had a nice flavor. I think I enjoyed the broth the most. For me, it was missing potatoes and had too much tomato, just a preference, there is no wrong way to make albondigas. I asked for all the condiments in the side and they did put everything on the side. The empanadas were okay. Seemed like they were made ahead of time and then slightly warmed. Again, I was missing the potatoes in the picadillo. Mom said her tortilla from the taco was very tuff and hard to eat. It seemed pre fried and old. She opted to eat the inside of the taco with tortilla chips. She's picky about her enchiladas. The cheese in the enchilada was slightly melted. The enchilada looked freshly made which, for me, can be a bad thing because making it fresh and heating in the salamander versus in the oven doesn't allow the cheese to fully melt. Now, the enchilada sauce was good and the rice was very good. Mom did complain about the lack of fullness in her plate. I reminded her that her taco would have sat in that empty spot. . . lol. . . On our way out, we noticed they were making homemade tortillas and wondered why we didn't get any lol. . . I think if I was in the area again I would stop in, especially for the albondigas.

Having set my Apple Maps before reading the description of the restaurant, my wife and I set our course on the way back from the San Diego Zoo. I didn't want to get home too late and the parking situation for the better restaurants near the zoo didn't look promising so we decided to go further away from San Diego to find a place on the way home near the 5 freeway. Cancun may not look like much but the food is pretty freaking amazing. My surf and turf burrito filled with generous amounts of shrimp and carne asada was incredible. Adding sour cream and guacamole just put it on another level. No burritos like this near my home. My wife's shrimp plate was also a winner. Lots of shrimp. My wife's only gripe was not enough rice and beans. Even the side of corn tortillas was moist and tasty. I'm not sure if they make their own tortillas but it seemed like it. Even the french fries are incredible. Nice and crispy but not dry. I thought I'd still be hungry after just the burrito but I had no idea what a monster it is. Even after eating 3/4 of it, the remainder was still heavy. The older lady working the register is so sweet. A little hard to understand since she has a thick accent but very nice and helpful. The cook was cool too. Very happy when I stopped before leaving to tell them the food was "delicioso". Don't let the gas station scare you away. The food is jammin'! I plan on stopping by again when I attend Comic-con next year.
