    Giant fish taco

Excellent place for late night tacos, always hits. The tacos are a little pricey but at least they're tasty and a good size. Carne asada nachos are good here, but i usually get rolled tacos and a fish taco.

I've been here 3 times and food is legit good. I was surprised the ratings are not higher. Their burritos are big and filling and you get what you paid for. My wife loves their hard shell tacos, which are also filling. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service has been good and they have out door seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They do have one television inside. I highly recommend this pllace

First time here, did a take out order. $40 for 2 items of just okay food. I live 8 minutes from here and my burrito had a huge split down the middle. Had to eat it with a fork and knife. Other spots have a sturdier burrito wrap. The nachos fell soggy really fast as well, I was racing against time trying to eat them before they all turned back into corn tortilla flaps. For the price, and the amount of food you get, it was good but the chip and tortilla quality just aren't there for me. Meat was tender and flavorful, not full big strips like other Mexican spots, they were smaller and thinner than I'm used to. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Giving 4 stars for cleanliness, taste, and service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Don't feel like they deserve a three star but I won't be going back

Amazing salsa, great staff, fast service, and great breakfast burritos. Bonus: delicious free water (unlike Starbucks)

    Shrimp burrito

Filling and cheap, a great place to come when hungry or after a night of drinking out. My fiancé and I stopped by here for an early lunch. We ordered inside and got our food within 10 min. Most people drive through so we were the only ones inside. I got the shrimp burrito ($14) and my fiancé got the California burrito ($15). Shrimp burrito was packed with rice beans and shrimp, wasn't the best shrimp I've had but very generous, the red sauce is bomb. My finances burrito was stuffed with steak and fries, with plenty of guacamole. Overall solid Mexican eatery with dank Fud. Wish there was one in OC

A drive through and Burrito and a taco for $22.52. No thanks.

The food was pretty good. The folks that worked there are friendly. The restaurant was clean and well lit. I came here to bitch. So it's not against the food or the management, or the employees. It's about life. I went to HS in Carlsbad in the early 90s. This place was Alberto's. Then I came back and visited. It was Roberto's. Now I'm back and it's Vallarta express. Look at my pictures. When I was in HS in 1993, a carne asada burrito was $2.75. A bean and cheese burrito was $1.75 (when we were broke we would buy that and split it between three HS football players, it weighed 2.5lbs, we called it a "wet sock") These prices are insane. A carne asada burrito is now $13.90. A SINGLE TACO IS $7.00! It's the same fast food drive through! Compared to today: $2.75 in 1993 has the same buying power as approximately $6.17 today (late 2025) I realize that I moved to the free state of Florida. But dang. The cost differential for everything here is totally lopsided.

    Christian fries ($18.25)

Vallarta Express has multiple locations across the San Diego area and like the other ones, this location in Carlsbad is also open 24/7. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location has both indoor and outdoor seating with a small parking lot and drive-through.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Since I don't come here as much now, when I do I always get the same thing: christian fries ($18.25). Christian fries are basically carne asada fries with bacon and fried eggs on top. It has all the toppings: carne asada, cheese, guacamole, pico, sour cream, bacon, and eggs. On top of that, I'm obsessed with their red sauce and drench it on every bite. Their red sauce is slightly sweeter than red sauces at other places but it's seriously addicting. Prices have gone up over the years but that doesn't stop me from coming back again and again. Other people have their opinions on what their favorite carne asada fries spot is and this one is mine.

Second time here. Went to Lego land and on the way home the kids requested we stop here again. We switched it up a little this time. Food was great! Big portions , definitely left us full and happy! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great drive thru service , casual ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]You can take it to go, or eat in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Not sure what this was in my breakfast burrito... very sharp and hard, bone like, though could have been a piece of plastic too.

It's just not the kind of Mexican restaurant where the veggies are organic and they are not using seed oils. And it works if you've got young kids in tow because the staff is nothing but friendly. I would say it's a very family friendly restaurant perfect for that little strip of Chick Filet, In and Out area of the 101 in Carlsbad. Funny. I am sure Chick Filet is not spelled that way .... but I've never eaten there, and don't really pay attention to fast food restaurants. In and Out is delicious too, but when I got to the bottom of the fries and it said they clearly use seed oils.... I was done. I understand that America is poisoning us ..... so I can't really applaud Miguel. But I also understand that many of us have young kids and less money. It's more about the gathering or being comfortable going for a meal. So it's definitely an option for many people. Plus we're stressed so comfort food is a nice break. I did not go for a salad. I did not go for things not fried. So I would say Miguels is good for a break from eating healthy. Not to deny yourself. Just not to do it as a regular thing. Unfortunately, the food did not meet expectations. I ordered a chicken taco with a cheese enchilada, while my husband went with two crunchy chicken tacos. His tacos were disappointing--overloaded with onions and what seemed like a messy combination of ingredients--and lacked appeal or good flavor. Despite asking for a simpler, standard version, the second attempt still tasted off. My chicken enchilada seemed microwaved and lacking freshness, and the taco was soggy and overloaded. We left feeling quite disappointed. Sadly, we both felt unwell afterward; my husband especially had a rough evening, vomitting throughout. While the service was friendly and the restaurant was clean, the subpar quality of food means we probably won't return. It was an unfortunate experience, especially after such a special occasion.

Not by our waiter but by the super long waited over an hour for our meal. Oh don't bother ordering the Queso Blanco it was DISCUSTING!! it was runey, nothing like what it should have been. Who serves runey queso?? it was gross. Everyone was complaining about the wait on thier meals to arrive. No fault to our waiter but OMG over an hour wait just for our meal was unacceptable. Ambiance is very festive colorful and loud, very loud. Our waiter Zeferino G. was nice very attentive no fault to him on the wait. He did comp a nice discount and apologized for our wait. All in all don't plan on ever going back. UPDATE: To Ernie F. Ownerwith all due respect NEVER were we ever nformed or told upfront that you were at a full capacity! How dare you put that statement out there when that never happened. 2nd as we arrived we were seated right away at a window area in the front. Our waiter Zeferino G. who was very sweet and kind took our order right away along with our drink order all at the same time. To be clear it wasn't until way after an hour of waiting for our dinner did a gentlemen who was about to give us a childs plate in err did apologize to us for the long wait telling us it was due to a big party in your indoor patio area. we noticed that same man made it a point to go around to all the other tables in our area apologizing for the long wait. 3rd prior to the gentleman coming back to our table to apologize for the super long wait, I did flag down our waiter asking status of our order, he apologized and said our order was almost ready, in which it was not. Mind you we were over hearing the other tables around us complining on the wait of their meals. Everyone around us was complaining about the wait. My wife said she'd never really liked anything she got there, but I said let's give them another try. Counter service was meh. No personality. No greeting. Just took the order and sent us on our way. Her attitude seemingly got worse after I didn't tip. (I do NOT tip at a counter place where I do all the refills and bus my own table.) We got their a 8:30 and they had to put the coffee out because we ordered it. All the bar stools in the front were all upside down on the tables. I'm sure we could have pulled them down, but come-on. It's 8:30 on a Sunday morning. Put your damn chairs down. My wife ordered the Al Pastor scramble served American style (hash browns & toast). The portion was small (no WAY that was three eggs), and the al pastor meat pieces were lacking flavor. The hash browns were barely cooked. She said, "this is what I was talking about." $17 or so. I ordered the breakfast burrito allegedly with chicken fried steak in it. $17 for JUST a burrito with no sides. I tasted no evidence of CFS, but I did taste some sausage gravy. It was a generously sized burrito. I will also add that their salsas go from NO heat (fresca) to super heat. Nothing in the middle. And one of the hot salsas was just yuck. (The one with all the pepper flakes in it.) The other tasted OK. They had carrots & jalapeños at the salsa bar, but tiny cups to put them in, so... Anyway... I like the surf and turf here, but everything else just seems meh. In a town with so much good Mexican food, I'll go elsewhere. The drive-through around the corner would have been cheaper and tastier.
