This is by far one of my favorite places for Mexican food in SoCal. As a Cali Native now living in the great state of Texas, sometimes it's refreshing to step outside the land of Tex‑Mex and get the real deal again. Colima's hits that spot every single time. When you walk in, the person behind the counter greets you immediately -- and not the dry "hi, what can I get you?" type of greeting. You get a full "¡Buenos días, mija!" with that warm, almost‑grito energy that makes you feel like you just walked into your tío's spot instead of a restaurant. Super friendly, super natural, and very SoCal. I ordered the rolled tacos plate and wow... esa porción estaba gigante. I couldn't finish it. What I loved most was the meat; this is what meat is supposed to taste like. The beef was seasoned the way we grew up eating it: a little salty, a little savory, with that slow‑cooked tenderness that lets you know it didn't come from some pre‑bagged, mystery‑meat situation. You get hints of garlic, a little cumin, and that warm, almost toasty flavor that comes from meat that's actually been browned, not steamed. It tasted like someone's abuela was in the back saying, "No, no, déjalo dorar un poquito más. And the corn tortillas? Perfect. Thin enough to get that crisp roll, thick enough not to shatter. None of that flour‑tortilla‑trying‑to‑be‑crispy nonsense. These were crunchy, flavorful, and loaded. The toppings were just as good. The guacamole tasted fresh. You could taste the real avocado which was creamy, a little chunky, with lime that actually tasted like lime and not concentrate. The red salsa had a legit kick to it. It had hints of roasted chiles, was smoky and had a slightly bitter edge that tells you they actually roasted them instead of just tossing raw peppers into a blender. It wasn't tourist spicy; it was SoCal Mexican‑restaurant spicy, which is a whole different category. My partner ordered a breakfast burrito and honestly? That thing could've fed three people. It was massive, stuffed to the brim with cheese, egg, potatoes, and fresh bacon and exactly what a SoCal breakfast burrito should be: simple, hearty, and no shortcuts. I was downtown early this morning enjoying the cool, cloudy, peaceful scenery and stopped by an old favorite OG Colimas for a breakfast burrito and take a look at this big ol thick girl here. A monster, heavy and filled with eggs, bacon, potato and cheese. Tasty and filling. This is just half. A little pricey as everything is these days, but you can split this burrito. Ask for extra salsa (red) for me because I used 2 easily on just half. Will be back again, just like old times. read more

Incredible Cal-Mex spot! We had a group of six and the service was lightning-fast. The standout was definitely the Chile Relleno Burrito--unique and delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their Carne Asada, Pollo, and Fish tacos; portions are huge and very tasty. The facilities are a bit dated, but for authentic food and unbeatable speed, this place is a win. Ordered bfast 'riter (bacon, eggs, beans, pico). Colima has def picked up the game since last time. Still pricey but totally worth it for the SIZE. Huge. Massive. I tried this place for the first time after having it recommended by some long time fans. Their burritos are huge! Worth the cost because it's easily 2 meals if you want. I ordered the surf and turf burrito with pico and guac on the side. It came with rice and peppers inside. It was piping hot the entire time I was eating it. Loaded with shrimp! And the carne asada was delicious. I tried my boyfriend's Cali burrito and I normally don't like those but this was excellent! The best one I've ever tried. Inconsistency has dropped this once favorite from 5 stars to 3 stars. Portions are still enormous but lack of them checking for missing items cost someone in our party to not have dinner and leaving ingredients out of items is a recipe for an unhappy diner. Tonight they left out a shredded chicken burrito and also the guacamole on a carne asada burrito. This has happened a couple times and might be the straw that broke the camels back. Time we give some other places a chance to earn our business. No more chances for now. Colima's is just average. read more

This place is overpriced. I just paid $18 for a California burrito. The burrito was a good size to share, lots of meat, juicy and had good ratio of meat, fries, guacamole and sour cream. It was our first time there, and although we weren't super hungry, we decided to pop in and share a plate. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We told them we were just looking to share something small, and they gave us great suggestions without any pressure. You can tell they really care about their customers. We ended up ordering one plate (average price around $15-$16), and within 3-4 minutes our food was at our table. Super fast service, and even better--the food was delicious! Authentic Mexican flavor, generous portions, and served hot and fresh. The restaurant was very clean, and the vibe is perfect for a quick, satisfying bite just steps away from the pier. Solid pick for Mexican food a short walk from the beach! We were walking around the pier, and found this spot just a short walk through the pedestrian walkway. It's a no-frills Mexican spot where you order first and they will bring your food to whichever table you choose to sit at. We opted for the California burrito platter with Carne Asada and opted for a side of double frijoles (instead of rice). They also had a salsa bar outside so you could grab the salsas that you wanted. Three months after posting about killer menudo from here, we returned yesterday for more menudo and it was terrible, the exact polar opposite of what we had eaten before! Tiny pieces of tripe and tons of hominy (which the previous menudo had none of). A huge disappointment for sure and we won't be returning to order anything here again. read more

This place has the absolute BEST horchata. It's cozy inside, plenty of seating, and the burritos are absolutely huge, like 2 people can split one. My mom, brother, and I made the mistake of each getting one, costing about $60 total. We all took half home. We came by here to try a California burrito which tasted fine. We were in Oceanside for a wedding and walked over to grab breakfast burritos the morning after. AMAZING with HUGE portions! I am still thinking about my chorizo breakfast burrito. The tortilla was grilled perfectly and had the best texture- a little chewy, a little flaky, and soft. I added fries inside of the chorizo breakfast burrito but I could have gone without it. My boyfriend also loved his carne asada super burrito. We're from the Bay Area and were blown away by these. HUGE ASS BURRITO!! If I knew I would have shared with my husband. We both got the surf and turf. It's literally like 8 inches long and 3 inches wide. It was full of beef, shrimp, rice and fajita vegetables. If you put hot sauce on it, it had flavor and good. But if you don't it's pretty bland. The meat had no seasoning... it didn't have the carne asada flavor. The shrimp was a little over cooked. The quantity is definitely something to rave about. Wish the meat had more flavor!! The CA burrito we order at all of the Colima's (as of 4 years ago they are not all connected) and it's one of our favorites. First time here and for $45 this was just not worth it. The beef in both meals was plain, unseasoned, and chewy. We also ordered the pineapple fountain drink which was very watered down or they needed to change out the soda box? My daughter was staying in Oceanside from out of town. We all generally love these kind of places so every one agreed to give this a try. We all ordered burritos to take out. One veggie, one California, one carnitas and one chicken. We called our order in and it was ready when we arrived. Everyone of the burritos was very big. All of us cut them in half and saved the other half for another meal. Everyone agreed they were great tasting. My chicken used dark meat. Not my favorite, but it was loaded with cheese, beans and rice. Really delicious. They didn't give chips but their sauce was good. The green sauce was way too hot. My husband has been coming here for decades and loves this place. Food is solid and portions are hearty. I've only ever had take out from here, which is usually fast and accurate. I tried their taco salad with beef - did not like it and it was probably the worst taco salad I've ever had. The meat was tough and overly salted. The lettuce was so soggy and the melted cheese that was between the lettuce and meat was a strange tasteless blob (hardly anything else in it other than a spoon of pico). The highlight was the sour cream and guac. I shouldn't have deviated from the norm! My husband's surf and turf burrito was much tastier. No no no. I rarely ever put 3 stars or less but...I am still disgusted by this experience. 1. Place is quite dirty. Bathrooms are disgusting. No soap. I let the restaurant staff know immediately but nothing was done. 2. Portions are huge. I get it would probably be worth it for young kids who are hungry and want value for money but not my grown up butt that loves Mexican food. Not only portions are huge but everything is big. Big pieces of meat in tacos and burritos, big chunks of onions tomatoes etc...come on! A good tacos is small and light filled and everything shall be cut small so you can chew easily and savor every taste of every ingredient. This was disgusting. I didn't even wanted to touch the taco :( Supreme burrito was a real mess. I can't even understand why they did that. 3. Everything is plastic. Heartbroken to see this even for people eating there and not ordering to go. Please stop this wastage of food and plastic. I felt super bad. We are very conscious when it comes to the environment etc. They had no filter water option but to buy plastic water bottles. Plastic spoons forks and knives - now picture me trying to cut that wet burrito :( I am sad that this is common in calrsbad in many many spots even hotels. Utterly disgusted by this behavior. 4. Food simply was not good. I would rather pay little more and eat at a better place with great food smaller portions and actual cutlery and crockery. Absolute wastage of everything. A call to the owners to reflect on how they serve their food. If they cannot accommodate actual cutlery minimum they can do is offer paper or bamboo based materials that are more environmentally friendly. Worse experience in Carlsbad. I lived in Oceanside forever and Colima's was one part of my regular mexican food rotation. If I was over by the beach this would be where I would go to grab some food for lunch or after some drinks at a nearby bar. Visiting town after moving away we came by to get some food to take back to our hotel room. As always Colima's hit the spot. This place is a MUST if you're in the area. I ordered ahead of time and the guy on the phone was soooo nice. When I got there who ever was behind the counter had amazing customer service and was super helpful and thoughtful. We're from out of town so he was making sure we had everything we needed. Theres one side for to go orders and looked like a restaurant side to sit and eat. Parking isn't great but who cares when you get this quality of food. Now for the food... OH MY GOSH soooooooo GOOD! My husband, myself and the kids devoured our plates. The asada torta is an absolute must. We didn't even get any pictures because we were so hungry and the food was so delicious. When in California, get the California burrito... Guess this was the wrong night to come here... We weren't super hungry and each getting the California burrito at colimas.
