I had a yummy vegan taco plate! They have two vegan taco options, nopales and vegan choriqueso (chorizo and cheese). The nopales were very unique and had an interesting slightly fruity flavor but I think I preferred the choriqueso. I got rice and refried beans as my side, both of which were also delicious. However I think there was some mixup and I'm pretty sure they accidentally put real cheese on my beans. When I ordered, I clearly heard the guy tell the kitchen that my plate was to be "all vegan including the cheese" but it seems like what happened was they put vegan cheese on my tacos but real cheese on the beans. Love that they are clearly making an effort to have the menu be vegan friendly but there seem to be some kinks to work out. Overall though I really liked the food here and I would come back! We didn't have time for a sit-down restaurant for breakfast, and were in the CV area, so we tried Señor Grubby's. My wife said she'd never really liked anything she got there, but I said let's give them another try. Counter service was meh. No personality. No greeting. Just took the order and sent us on our way. Her attitude seemingly got worse after I didn't tip. (I do NOT tip at a counter place where I do all the refills and bus my own table.) We got their a 8:30 and they had to put the coffee out because we ordered it. All the bar stools in the front were all upside down on the tables. I'm sure we could have pulled them down, but come-on. It's 8:30 on a Sunday morning. Put your damn chairs down. My wife ordered the Al Pastor scramble served American style (hash browns & toast). The portion was small (no WAY that was three eggs), and the al pastor meat pieces were lacking flavor. The hash browns were barely cooked. She said, "this is what I was talking about." $17 or so. I ordered the breakfast burrito allegedly with chicken fried steak in it. $17 for JUST a burrito with no sides. I tasted no evidence of CFS, but I did taste some sausage gravy. It was a generously sized burrito. I will also add that their salsas go from NO heat (fresca) to super heat. Nothing in the middle. And one of the hot salsas was just yuck. (The one with all the pepper flakes in it.) The other tasted OK. They had carrots & jalapeños at the salsa bar, but tiny cups to put them in, so... Anyway... I like the surf and turf here, but everything else just seems meh. In a town with so much good Mexican food, I'll go elsewhere. The drive-through around the corner would have been cheaper and tastier. read more

Delicious!!!! I always get Tacos carnitas!!!! I recommend their chipotle They have Mountain Dew in cans, if I'm doing soda, it's the Dew for me. BURRITO-CENTRIC SURF SHACK! It's a tradition for my family and I to visit Señor Grubby's after a trip to the Carlsbad village. We found some parking a couple blocks away and walked on over to Grubby's for a bite. I ordered my classic California burrito which is filled with carne asada, fries, etc. I was absolutely thrilled and enjoyed my main course. Unfortunately, there was a few major errors during this trip. First, my Mom's order was completely wrong. The young lady at the front took her order and it went through one ear and out the other. My Mom was disappointed, so this put a damper on the experience. Additionally, I ordered a vegan chorizo taco on the side to sample their new menu items. We didn't like the mushy texture of the "soyrizo" nor the flavor. It was a misfire and I wouldn't recommend it. Tortillas are not made in-house and salsa was a little mid. The ambiance was very chill inside, whereas the outdoor patio (which comes equipped with a bar) was loud and full of kids running around. We much prefer eating indoors, I personally love the music inside Grubby's and seeing the Padres representation. Imagine rocking out, listening to Harry Styles, and vibing to spacey tunes while eating a burrito. LOVE IT! The surf shack floors and decor honor the relaxed nature of Carlsbad. It's not exactly real Mexican food but is more Mexican American. The food is fresh and meat is cooked well. I love that the menu is straightforward and you can get a bunch of small things. The birria was tasty and perfect with the cheese. The consumme was flavorful and beefy. The minus star is for the cleanliness. The tables were sticky. The bathroom needed upkeep. It's a bad idea to keep an open kitchen where diners can see how dirty it is. I understand that the cooks are busy and the operation is lean, but the dirty restaurant is a turn off. read more

Señor Grubby's never disappoints! We make it a stop every time we are in Carlsbad. It was a beautiful sunny Carlsbad day, so the four of us (two couples) sat out back on the patio. We guys opted for the Padres game day special. Bacon wrapped hot dogs stuffed into a pretzel bun. $12 for two. We ordered two and split each one in half so we could both try a half. Padre's Dog: Machado Topped with shrimp Diabla, chipotle cream, and Pico de Gallo. This dog was fantastic! The shrimp were plentiful and spicy! Perfectly grilled. The chipotle sauce was so good. The bacon wrapped dog was a biggie and delicious. Padre's Dog: El Niño Topped with chorizo, cilantro, onion, and cheese. Another fat dog wrapped in bacon. It was covered with chorizo and it, too, was excellent. The wives had Grubby's Famous Street Tacos Served on fresh corn tortillas They chose carnitas. The three tacos were about three bites each. The perfect size for a snack. They each enjoyed one and I devoured the last one. Excellent carnitas. Excellent taco. Service as usual at Grubby's was outstanding at the bar on the patio. I regret that I waited so long to try this place, it's been in the village so long you can't deny it's popular for a reason! There is a lot of seating inside and even a whole bar in the back, so it's a great place to hangout on a Friday night. I had their steak and shrimp diablo burrito and MAN it was GOOD. It was so huge I had enough to make it for two meals. Love the salsa bar, lots of places don't give you enough salsa so I appreciate that they let you get as much as you need. Not to mention every salsa type was so good. Just writing about it makes me wanna go there right now! We always make a stop at Senior Grubby's when we're in Carlsbad for vacation. We like the authentic Mexican street food. They have good margaritas, good salsa, and I like their hand pressed corn tortillas. I almost always get their street fish tacos. They use Mahi Mahi and you can get them fried or grilled. I also enjoy their fish burrito, it comes with grilled or beer battered Tilapia and a chipotle cream sauce. I've had the Shrimp Diablo burrito too, it's good if you can handle the spice! Salsa and guac are my least favorite in all of San Diego. The pico de gallo is almost all onion and a bit of cilantro, the tomato is almost just a wish. This is a great stop on the way to the beach from the village. Ordered a taco plate- 3 street tacos and a side for a pretty high price point of $17. The grilled fish and shrimp were great, but the pork missed the flavor mark for me. Also 3 tacos is a hefty serving size for one but does make it hard to split. The rice and beans as a side was also good, and they added pineapple slices as well. My to-go order came with a fork and napkins which is always appreciated because I headed down to the beach to catch the sunset. Came here because we were craving tacos. The location is close to the water so after a beach day in Carlsbad or just to watch some sports. You can't miss the building as it has a huge mural on the side of the building. You're greeted by the colorful decor and TV's displayed with the sport games of the night. There's open seating after you order indoor or outdoor. They have certain beers on tap and a good selection of tacos. The 3 tacos with sides is about $4.75 a taco. I think I would prefer another taco instead of the sides lol. The seafood was fresh. Other than ordering food we never saw the servers. It seemed more of a service yourself vibe. My husband has been telling me about this place for a while now. So I'm glad we remembered to try it for dinner before going over to NVA to see a show. Ordered just a couple of burritos: machaca and a shrimp diablo. Pretty expensive for two burritos. But at least when they came, they were well prepared, tasty and large. My shrimp burrito had nice size shrimp that were not overcooked, a lot of shredded cabbage and a delicious sauce. My husband's machaca was also very good with shredded beef,eggs, peppers and onions. The salsas were all very interesting each one with a unique flavor profile. I liked the vibe of this casual bar. They have both inside and outside seating and plenty of tvs tuned the Padres. If you're looking for fish tacos with a great taco toppings bar; head to Senor Grubby's. The best thing about this spot is the location; it's a few blocks from the ocean. The key to the most amazing day? Grab some tacos, some guacamole for take out, and walk the few blocks down to the beach...especially around sunset. Watching the sunset at the beach while eating a few Grubby's tacos is like peak life. There's also a bar and the vibe seems cool, although I haven't really dined in too often here. The only drawback?
