I've been here twice in the past week for happy hour and it's sooo good every time. The happy hour is Mon thru Thursday every week from 3-5 pm. I don't quite remember the prices but I think everything priced was fair/good value seeing as their food and cocktails are amazing and very high quality. I love the chicken gochujang sandwich. It is sweet, tangy, spicy, and the perfect portion. It is part of their happy hour but also their regular menu so it's great that I can enjoy at a discount. The happy hour was house cocktails only, but they do them really well. Their original cocktails are fun, delicious, and one of a kind. I tried a few and you can't go wrong. Lastly, the bartenders and servers are exceptional. They are kind and fun and definitely help to make the experience and environment a lot more enjoyable. Not a quiet place to have a conversation by any means. We came here for drinks and appetizers. The chicken hit it out of the ballpark. Finger licking good! I'm not experienced with having cocktails so I am not the person to take advice from but I liked what I ordered. We settled on the Khao Soi chicken curry with egg noodle, larb lettuce cups, and Grilled Steak with thai chili dipping sauce. Best was the grilled steak, least favorite was the kaho soi chicken curry noodles. Noodles were a bit overcooked and the curry wasn't very flavorful. Steak was great though. The chili dipping sauce paired really well with the perfectly cooked medium rare steak and we ended up pouring the remainder of the sauce in our noodles. We arrived around 5ish on a Saturday night and they were already pretty busy. We ended up sitting at the bar instead of the dining room but had a great experience nonetheless. I should have seen that this place is more of a bar than a restaurant because when we walked in, the place did not look like any Thai restaurant we have been to. Anyway, the menu selection was limited. We got the Tom Kha soup, Chicken Satay, and the Korean short ribs. The soup was tasty but a bit on the salty side. What a perfect way to end a big day! We wrapped up an exciting evening of networking and celebrations in Carlsbad by heading over to Same Same for dinner and it was absolutely the right call. We ordered the wonton samosas, corn ribs, marinated cucumbers, and finished with the khao soi curry with tofu on the recommendation of our server, Mike. Everything was flavorful, fresh. The corn ribs were a little on the salty side but still delicious and totally addictive. The wonton samosas were a wonderful surprise. It was a creative, flavorful twist on traditional Indian samosas that we weren't expecting but loved. The marinated cucumbers were a refreshing complement to everything else on the table. But the real star of the meal? The khao soi. Beautifully spicy with just the right hint of lemongrass, just enough to shine, but not so much that it overpowered the other flavors or turned bitter. I can't believe it was our first time at Same Same! Went in on a Saturday night a little after 9:00. We were looking at the menu and the bartender informed us the kitchen had closed at nine. Very common for the area but so disappointing for a weekend night. I had the simple Rick and upgraded to Tito's. It was delicious but a bit pricey at $17. My husband had a local IPA and liked it. The service was good. The vibe is great and the decor is really cute and kitschy. There is a DJ that starts at 10, at least on the weekends. Despite the name this is not a Thai restaurant, per se, but is best described as pan-Asian fusion. Whilst Thai cuisine is heavily drawn on there are influences from Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc all wrapped in a SoCal fusion style. Cool vibe with a bar in front and table seating in a back room. Interesting, eclectic art works cover pretty much all of the walls with dried plants hanging from the ceiling. Let's start with the cocktails. They have a very creative cocktail menu and the two that we had were delicious. We also had a small bottle of sake Wonton Samosa - Thai Massaman curry in a wonton wrapper and deep fried like a samosa. Served with a mayonnaise sauce. Perfectly executed and absolutely delicious. Chicken Satay - Pretty much traditional Thai style with a delicious peanut sauce. Served with pickled cucumbers. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was very tender. Thai Chicken Wings - Delicious like the first two plates. A little messy to eat but a great crust and sauce. We were pretty much sated at this point but the head chef, Cross, came out to greet us and ask about our meal. Asked if we wanted dessert, on the house, and we agreed. Brought us a Thai tea tiramisu with shaved coconut on top. I love traditional tiramisu and this was absolutely delicious. Service was very professional and friendly. I think everything really complimented each other well from the music to the art to the menu, it was great! Our server was nice as we were indecisive with even such a small menu, we had a hard time. The drinks were good and strong, unique and creative. Which I guess when you're going out and want to stay on theme, it works. We had the coconut broth hamachi which was so lip-smackingly addictive with those wonton chips! I would come back just for that dish! The chicken satay skewers were also delicious and the sauce that came with it was a good mix of sweet, savory, spicy and salty. I do think from there it was kind of just okay? I got the half fried chicken which smelled a fish sauce glaze and that's what I went in expecting but there was no punch of that fish sauce flavor you know? It needed a bit more pop. BF got the pork belly banh mi bowl which I guess in theory why would you get that at a Thai place? But the pork belly was hard and firm, not as you'd expect it to be which was dissapointing. But believe me, I've had people use their imaginations when making just a vodka soda so I'm grateful when anyone accurately completes the simplest assignment. For crying out loud, I don't even require a little lime/lemon garnish. Just give me the spirit and the unflavored sparkly water. That's it. So yeah, I got my vodka soda made to its usual proportions here. That's tick number two. The demographic makeup, albeit out of their control, was very interesting. The cute curly haired blonde friend I went with almost got attacked by a spicy brunette just because she glanced at her a few times. The girl was not riding the currents of her liquid very well and she was behaving like a total spectacle. Thankfully, her mouth and her nails were larger than her. Outside of that experience, most of its patrons were either young military dudes or other comfy cotton wearing suburban types. I imagine the train brings in a lot of interstate traffic so who really knows what the "locals" are like. I was only there since my NorCal friend wanted to explore Carlsbad. I don't have a reason to go back out there but I wouldn't oppose to revisiting if I'm in the area again.
