The service is always pretty attentive, although they could refill my coffee a little faster. :) (my wife and daughter would tell me that I just drink too much coffee.) The food is always prepared very well and the dishes are whatever called next level brunch fair. It's not your typical second eggs place. An example would be there Parmesan balls, which are really tasty. Everything is always very attractive looking and taste great. I wasn't particularly fond of the chicken and waffles. The waffle batter is not the usual waffle batter. )Again they're trying to take it up a notch but honestly, I would've preferred just regular waffle batter.) The chicken on top looked crispy but it actually wasn't. The batter was kind of thin. The spicy syrup was quite good. We're Carlsbad locals and biked over to Toasted after seeing how busy it was outside, so we figured it must be worth checking out. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We checked in with the host (red hair) and were told the wait would be about 30 minutes, but it ended up being 1 hour and 10 minutes. When we checked in again, the host told us we were next to be seated (no apology or warmness for the extended 40 minute wait time was offered). Shortly after, another table was seated before us. When I asked about it, she said there were two open tables reserved for parties ahead of us, which was confusing since we had just been told we were next. I completely understand that busy restaurants can be chaotic, especially when it's loud and packed, but the communication felt unclear and the attitude from the host was short and not accommodating. A more accurate wait time or clearer explanation would have been helpful. Once we were finally seated, we waited about 10 minutes before a server came over, and one of the first things mentioned was that the kitchen was running slow. Haha, not risking it. At that point, we decided to leave. We biked up to Swami's instead (2 mins away) and had a yummy meal (steak and eggs with buttermilk pancakes and their house Kona brew hazelnut coffee) within 15 minutes of arriving - all with friendly service. Maybe the food at Toasted is great? Based on the wait, lack of communication, and overall experience, I'm not sure what the hype is. The attitude felt like "we're so busy we don't need to try that hard". I hope we don't sound high maintenance, we're not, just looking for a yummy meal and friendly people. What a fantastic brunch spot! The shrimp and grits were absolutely amazing--perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and easily one of the best I've had. I also tried a mimosa flight, and it was the perfect complement to brunch. I had The lavender, hibiscus, mango, and pineapple mimosas were my favorites and definitely worth ordering! And the little balls of potatoes served with most of the dishes, sprinkled with a generous amount of parmesan cheese, were so bomb. We've never had anything like them! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside; enlarged whopper sized balls of heaven! The steak and eggs were good, but the sauce was not as savory of a gravy and the steak was not as tender as I had expected/wished, so it was my least favorite of all the dishes. Still good though! My friend jumped on the train in Anaheim and I jumped on in Laguna Niguel. It's such a nice ride to Oceanside. The menu offered a nice variety of dishes, from which we selected: Smoked Brisket Melt (4/5) -- Tender smoked brisket on sourdough bread with BBQ sauce and a side of cheese fries. Caesar Salad with Chicken (4/5) Lobster Toast (3/5) -- Avocado mashed on sourdough toast, topped with lobster, corn, bacon, and truffle oil. Tasty but the toast was too hard even for a steak knife. I was incredibly impressed by the payment system and it's perfect with a large group. You scan the QR code on the receipt with your phone and you can pay what items are yours. Let me tell you, they are GENEROUS with the refills of champagne. Polo did his rounds often enough to make sure you never completely finish your glass LOL!
