this review is regarding salsa only. My husband and I are having a large dinner with a Mexican menu for our family. We decided to try salsa from 6 different Mexican grocery stores in Vista and Oceanside all in 1 day. All were pretty good but there are two that stood out head and shoulders above the rest. In second place was Salsa Market on Santa Fe. Their green salsa was delicious. However, the best salsa in the area, hands-down is Tortilla Leon!! Their Salsa Botanera and Salsa Molcajete are the bomb. Clearly different and more flavorful than all the six we tried. Such a great store, tortilleria, Carniceria, and hot food kitchen. This Mexican market is close to my house thus it's very convenient for me when I need smaller number of veggies and meat on a short notice ;) Leon offers a large selection of food, fruits, veggies and homemade, fresh tortillas. The tortillas are bomb, my favorites are the flour ones. There is a butcher shop, small fish stand and a taco shop. I often get margarita chicken and some dried chorizo (Honestly some the best dried chorizo I found in N. County). They also sell fresh salsa that you can try at the taco shop. A huge plus for their chili oil. The staff is so very friendly and helpful. Place is clean. Plenty of parking. Recommended! read more

When you walk in through the door there's the smell of fresh tortillas and a giant tortilla machine looking right back at you. There are ice chests full of warm tortillas freshly made this morning. There's a small fruit and vegetable section with an ample meat market. in the back. There is a large refrigerator with just about every salsa you could imagine from mild to blow-your-head-off spicy! Thinly cut Rib Eye steaks was my choice for our BBQ to make tacos, with those fresh tortillas. Grabbed a tomatillo-based avocado salsa on the way out and a couple of fresh limes. At the checkout, a woman came up behind me removing my salsa bucket, replacing it with another one that she'd just made. Everything in this mini-mall store was fresh and full of pride. The Rib Eye at $7.98 per pound made awesome tacos. I'll be back! read more

Someone once asked me, if Gordon Ramsey showed up at my door and asked me to make dinner, what would I make him? Gordon, hope you like carne (and tiki drinks). This local market is close to our house, and they are now my go to for thin sliced low fat carne asada, fresh tortillas, premade guac and salsa. I've had their chicharrones too, they were great. We have a lot of choices in local carne, and this one is just as good or better than the place by the freeway that's always drawing me in with their grill smoke or the well known place in Esco in the questionable neighborhood or the local fancy market. Staff is always friendly and helpful. The meat is not pre marinated, they douse it when you order it, but I've found that sitting for an hour or so at room temp works well. Then onto the grill while I mix up some tiki drinks. Or a margarita, if Chef Ramsey insists. read more

I loved this divey little Mexican market on the outskirts of Vista. We got the molcajete salsa, the salsa roja and a green salsa I can remember the name of but was made with avocado and tomatillos. They were all different and delicious in their own way but the green one was our favorite. It was fun to see the tortilla machines turning out fresh tortillas. We got a bag and they didn't seem as fresh as I expected but add a couple drops of water and throw them on the grill and they soften up well. They also have a counter in the back with all kinds of freshly made Mexican dishes. I had them heat up a cheese and pepper tamale as well as a pork tamale for us to try. The cheese one was soft, fresh and delicious and I would get it again. Maybe even a dozen around the holidays for fun. The pork was a little dry and just ok. I was a little disappointed they were out of chips to go with our salsa so we had to stop at another store to get some chips. I was also a little disappointed in their prices. Inflation is rough but a can of Rosarita beans you can get at the grocery store for let's just say a maximum of $1.99? was $3.49 here. A normal size salsa you would get at a grocery store for $5-$6 was $6.99 here. This one I can deal with since it's a good size and from a specialty local place but I was disappointed the smaller half tubs were $5-$6 so if you want to try a few different salsas you're out $15-$18 plus a bag of chips you're getting up there. All in all I look forward to coming back and trying some different salsas, maybe their homemade guacamole and definitely want to get some tamales. read more

Amazing tortillas!! We were driving by and decided to come in and get some tortillas. As it turned out, they just opened and were still fine-tuning their tortilla machine. We got to sample some fresh tortillas which are amazing!! I wish we had a cooler with us so we can get some meat and salsa. We ended up getting some flan which they make there ( we are anxious to try), flour tortillas and the 1st bag of tortillas sold off their tortilla machine. can't get fresher tortillas than this and great tortilla chips too, crunchy, not oily with a little hint of lime. other chips taste like they were cooked in old oil but these taste fresh and my daughter asks for these chips over any other. they have a fully stocked meat market too with delicious cuts of fresh beef and house made chorizo.
