I have been to Flying Pig before about 8 years ago on the East coast during a work trip, and was so stoked to see it in Oceanside. I recall it being a delicious and a wonderful dining experience. I have been looking forward to bringing my family and friends here all week. I am giving this restaurant 3 stars, because their food is still AMAZING and their staff is super nice and I believe deep down inside that they just had a REALLY OFF night. We had reservations for a party of 9 last night. The table was set up nicely and accommodated a few extra if needed, which I thought was cool. We started with some adult beverages: an Old Fashion, some Hotel Nacionals, a Fashionably Late, and a couple of beers. Everything started great. Dennis, our server was very cool and friendly and gave great suggestions. We ordered the mac and cheese sides and they were delicious with huge pieces of savory bacon in them. We also ordered the brussel sprouts which we never received and didn't even realize it until the very end when we received the bill because of all the other issues we had... but we'll get to that in a moment. But let's talk about what did go well... the delicious food we did get. We ordered the Pig burger which was sooo good and came with crispy fries. The fish for the fish and chips were 2 huge pieces and were delicious, came with yummy seasoned waffle fries and the tiniest tartar sauce and malt vinegar. I had to request 4 more for that amount of fish, but no big deal. Dennis brought out as much as we needed. Their ranch sauce is really good too. Don't judge just because it's a little peachy'ish and looks thousand island'ish. lt's still some very good ranch. My son said he really tasted the bitterness of beer in the fish batter but maybe it was just in that piece he had; I could not taste it in the piece of fish I ate. The short rib was really tender and delicious... the sauce was just a tad salty for my taste, but the mashed potatoes it sat on sort of balanced it out a little. The fried chicken thighs were really cooked well, juicy, crispy and seasoned perfectly. We ordered two Teres Major steaks. One rare with mashed potaoes, one medium rare with grits. The rare one came out medium and without any mushrooms, took FOREVEEERR to remake (the rest of the table was almost done with our meals...& not sure why it took so long since the restaurant wasn't that busy and it's a RARE steak). The one with grits came with mashed potatoes instead of grits. Dennis was super nice and apologetic and corrected both mistakes when we let him know. He then brought us a big bowl of grits. The manager (blonde gal) came over and apologized for the mistakes tonight, letting us know that usually does not happen, and let us know she'd be comping one of our steaks and would be bringing a dessert on them. We thought that was very nice of them. However, as nice a gesture. we never did receive that dessert. My husband handed Dennis his credit card before the bill arrived (before our friends could try to pay the bill) and not sure why but our bill never came, and we never saw Dennis again either after he boxed up our leftovers and took the card. We had to ask another server for our bill because we had been waiting for quite a while... and needed to head out as we were already late to meet friends at a lounge. The other server came back with my husband's credit card, the bill (that's when I finally noticed the brussel sprouts sides we never got but were charged), and let the server know. He immediately apologized and took it off the bill. So I'm not sure what happened last night at Flying Pig...missing and charged brussel sprouts, steak overcooked, missing mushrooms, mashed potatoes instead of grits, then a comped dessert promised but never delivered. WOW. I had to apologize to my friends. I was totally hyping up this place and it underdelivered. They automatically got their 20% gratuity for our party of 9 but anyone that knows me knows how much I absolutely love great service combined with exceptional food and that could have easily been a 30-35% tip had they been on their A game! We only come to Oceanside once a year. Maybe we will try again next year. Maybe not. This trip was about trying out a bunch of different restaurants and giving honest reviews on dishes/businesses we haven't tried before, or in a long time. Do better guys. read more

We are from out of town and I always like a restaurant with a funny name. I noticed they had good reviews so we decided to stop in. The staff was very nice. The restaurant is full of fun and is very lively. The table that we sat at is very old and is handmade and we really appreciate the decor. For dinner I had a ribeye steak with a salad and it was delicious. My husband and son enjoyed some beef short ribs and they were pretty good as well. We really enjoyed this restaurant unfortunately we didn't have time to stay for Dessert but maybe next time we will. Attended a pre wedding festivity here for my cousin's son and soon to be wife. My cousin and her husband selected this place and ai have to say what a great choice. the food was delicious and the service was excellent. We were in a side room separate from the main restaurant. From what I could tell they worked really well with what the groom's parents wanted to do. There was a large charcuterie table with savory and sweet bites. A variety of vegetables, fresh fruit, cheeses, and meats. Beautifully displayed. Dinner was chicken, short rib I believe, mashed potato's and a salad. Went there about 1:30pm on a Monday afternoon and the place was pretty dead. Super quiet, had maybe 2 more people come in while my friend and I were there. Oh my goodness!! Where do I start? I wish I could give more than 5 stars. We stumbled upon Flying Pig during our most recent spring visit to Oside, and I can guarantee we won't miss eating here during any future visits. I would say the 5 star review started with the initial phone call to check availability. This is the first time I have had deviled eggs where I immediately wanted to change something about my own recipe. The fried chicken thighs were perfectly made and every detail of each plate was well thought out. Mashed potatoes and gravy are one of my many weaknesses. They nailed it. Delicious southern style place. Finally made the trip in for lunch with friends. The service was great and the place was homey and cute. Most of us ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries. The bun was puffy and soft, the chicken was extra crispy and juicy,,it had a nice alio sauce, and pickles on the sandwich. They use boneless thighs which are much more flavorful, then breast. Parking in Oceanside is relatively easy, free for 2 hours with lots of parallel spots available, although you may have to drive around the block once or twice to find an open one. They have a small patio out front of the restaurant, as well as dining room seating and bar seating. I got the BBQ Pork Patty Melt (pork patty, pulled pork, white cheddar, pickled onions, BBQ sauce) with fries. When we first arrived, there is no sign saying "please wait to be seated" and no one greeted us, so we just stood there waiting to see what happens. Finally, my partner asked the bartender if we seat ourselves, but nope, we were waiting for someone to help us. Mind you, we arrived around 1 pm on a Saturday. Luckily there was hand soap. I ordered the pear salad, my partner ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and my family ordered the Brandt backyard burger and Mac n cheese. We all agreed the shoestring fries were fresh and crispy, but needed salt. The Mac n cheese also needed salt, but good cheese. There is no s&p on the table. My partner and I thought the pear salad was really good; my kind of salad because I love fruit and funky cheese (blue cheese) in my salads. My family enjoyed their burger with their ranch the most (upon request). The pulled pork is Carolina style (vinegar based sauce). We felt the service was more attentive during our lunch. This is a good spot for locals and tourists to try out because their lunch menu has a variety of things that may hit for different folks. As a veggie eater, I'm glad they had a few items without bacon in it, but I'm personally not going to suggest this place if we go out to eat. I think instead of the sauce, they cooked it in just plain water. God..... The coleslaw was also a sad one. No flavor what so ever. They forgot to put salt in. To put salt on the wound, I saw some pickles on my plate, I was like these pickles gonna be good (hopefully)..... But nope! They were the grossest pickles I have ever had..... They tasted like water........ There was no salt and no flavor! As I was just thinking how this place has such good reviews with this disasterous food quality, the waitress answered my thoughts. She came to check on us.... I mean what are we gonna say, that this is allll gross food. As we kind of said we are ok, she said "we have a new chef" and all of it made sense! But I don't see this as being their new chefs fault or the waitress's fault. This is all the manager/owner's fault! When you hire a new chef, for at least 2 weeks, you need to quality test, every dish that is being made in your restuarant before the plate reaches your guests. I bet you, if the manager/owner tried that pulled pork, cole slaw or the pickles, they would have puked from being so gross. The beer and drink selection alone is worth the visit--tons of options whether you're keeping it casual or trying something new. Food-wise... the Bacon Mac N Cheese was next level. Rich, flavorful, and exactly what you want it to be. My buddy (who was literally about to move out of town) went with the burger--and let's just say he picked the right "last meal" in Oceanside. What really stood out though was the service. Top of the line from start to finish. Big shoutout to Mitch--young guy, super personable, clearly takes pride in what he does. Located right on the main strip, this cute little eatery is divided into 2 indoor (bar and table seating) areas, with an outdoor seated patio on the street with heat lamps. Nice selection on the menu, featuring southern style dishes, but they also have a seasonal menu! Ordered the pork chop (server said it was served bone in and juicy - but arrived with the bone removed and overcooked - in my friends opinion), I ordered the short ribs - which were outstanding! So tender, perfectly cooked and seasoned. I swapped the baked beans for mashed potatoes (per the servers suggestion). It came with a few small slices of cornbread on the side, which were amazing! Wine seemed expensive - so plan accordingly. Service was friendly and responsive, I cannot say enough about them! Inside decor was very cute, and matched the restaurants Southern vibe! Tuesday happy hour because we're on a staycation this week! We ordered the deviled eggs.. they're purple! I found them to be a bit bland, the hubs thought they were delicious. We also had the bacon Mac and cheese...so good! Aged provolone, big chunks of bacon and tender pasta. Third was the chicken sando...crispy and juicy with aioli, arugula and we added pickles. That said, the food was very good. Here are a few highlights: Fried Catfish - A must-try. The breading was terrific and the catfish was fresh. Absolutely delicious. (5/5) Caesar Salad - Super fresh, and it's clear they make the dressing in-house. Great flavors and a much-needed serving of greens. (5/5) Pulled Pork Sandwich - Very flavorful with a nice BBQ sauce. We stopped here for lunch a couple days ago. We did have to stand at the entrance for a while until we were aknowledged, but then they sat us on the patio right away. At first they gave us the regular menu, but once I pointed out that their website said its happy hour, they quickly gave us the reduced priced happy hour menu. Decided to try this place out based on other Yelp reviews. The atmosphere was laid back and at the time we were there, they were not busy at all (around 2pm). We were greeted by a host and got seated fairly quickly. The restaurant offers a few different seating options including seats at the bar and outside patio seating. Our waitress was really attentive and since this was our first time here, provided the details on food and the "local" favorites. They have a really good selection of beers, wines and cocktails. The staff are knowledgeable about the selections and recommend them based on your taste profile. Looking over the menu, they provide a really good amount of food options and they are fairly priced. We ordered the pig burger and BBQ Pulled pork bowl with egg. The pig burger was OK. The portion size was great but the patties were dry. They are cooked "smash" burger style. I was not given an option to have a preference on how I wanted to have the patties cooked and they came out extremely well done. The dressings on the burger made it a little more palatable. The waitress also recommended getting an egg on the burger, it was a great recommendation. The bacon jam they put on the burger is delicious. If the burger was cooked medium, this would have been a hit and a 10/10 burger. The other dish we got was a BBQ Pilled pork bowl over rice with a sunny side up egg. yelp always coming through! i was looking for a dog friendly restaurant that had a patio but also had good food came across flying pig pub & kitchen! so glad we decided on this restaurant. we were sooo hungry after being stuck on the 5 fwy for 5 hours!!! we got to pick our table out on the patio there were other parties that also had dogs with them :) i feel like other dog parents just get it anyhoo. our waiter was really cool. he gave us recommendations and checked on us frequently. he was pretty busy as he handled the entire patio, which was a steady 6 tables. great vibes. really great tasting food. overall, a place i would def come back to. the menu is southern inspired comfort food but with an oceanside flavor. everything is made in house (loved the pickles) and sourced locally. ordered: pork belly steak and fries fried chicken sando parking: there are paid lots but also street parking is avail for free for two hours. read more

This was a very nice visit. Upon arrival, we were greeted and offer options as to our seating. We opted to be seated in the bar. Our server went over the menu, both describing the options and describing the dishes. Our food arrived and while it looked appealing, it tasted absolutely delicious! We shared a salad, Brussels sprouts and deviled eggs. The portions were more than ample. We brought quite a bit home. Both inside and outside dining are available. Fun place. Nice people. Great food. From the moment we were greeted by the hostess with the biggest smile ever we knew we would love this place. We got the goat cheese app. Incredible! The short rib mac and cheese was delicious. But the banana pudding was the star of the show. We can't wait to go back. read more

We sat outside on the street, it was a beautiful night. Our server Sean/Shawn made our evening! He engaged with us, had fun conversations. We started with cocktails and fried green tomatoes. Very good! Every time he told us how he likes to eat a dish, each person said yes to the upsell . The food was delicious! Pork chops with a fried egg added, Mac n cheese with fried chicken added, shrimp & grits with cheese and bacon added, the short ribs, the beef sandwich, and the fried chicken & mashed potatoes with collards were all really great! The table liked the short ribs the best. Oh and he suggested the beignets injected with the banana pudding, it comes with their homemade jam. I'm craving that now! Go, you won't be sorry! read more
