The online descriptions appear to be heavily embellished (likely AI-generated), promising far more than what arrives at the table. The steak was noticeably low quality, and the cioppino, advertised with fresh bread, fish, and pasta, tasted like watered-down Campbell's soup concentrate. To make matters worse, the bathroom was filthy. While our waiter was genuinely nice, the food was a huge disappointment. I think what really want me over with this place was the service. The people are so nice here! Our waiter Shawn was so welcoming and friendly. We tried the fried shrimp which was our favorite food item. In terms of drinks, we tried the blueberry pink lemonade, seltzer, the chart ale from Portland, and The mission cocktail. The chart was the best, but honestly all three drinks were a hit. This place is super close to the water in the pier and I would definitely recommend to come! This might be my new favorite happy hour spot in Oside! It is the perfect blend of classic bar vibes + good food and it's not too hectic. I came here for happy hour on a work day and it got progressively more busy but not obnoxious. We ordered wine, mac n cheese, and deviled eggs. Everything was delicious! Been a year or two since my last visit, but the food and service have not changed, still excellent. I had the teres major special, medium rare. Perfectly cooked and delicious. I do wish that the sauce was on the side. It was delicious, but I prefer to taste the beef. Teres major is a beefy and special cut, and all it needs is a little flaky salt. We are from out of town and I always like a restaurant with a funny name. I noticed they had good reviews so we decided to stop in. The staff was very nice. The restaurant is full of fun and is very lively. The table that we sat at is very old and is handmade and we really appreciate the decor. For dinner I had a ribeye steak with a salad and it was delicious. My husband and son enjoyed some beef short ribs and they were pretty good as well. We really enjoyed this restaurant unfortunately we didn't have time to stay for Dessert but maybe next time we will. Attended a pre wedding festivity here for my cousin's son and soon to be wife. My cousin and her husband selected this place and ai have to say what a great choice. the food was delicious and the service was excellent. We were in a side room separate from the main restaurant. From what I could tell they worked really well with what the groom's parents wanted to do. There was a large charcuterie table with savory and sweet bites. A variety of vegetables, fresh fruit, cheeses, and meats. Beautifully displayed. Dinner was chicken, short rib I believe, mashed potato's and a salad. Their cocktails were beautifully presented and well balanced. I have been to Flying Pig before about 8 years ago on the East coast during a work trip, and was so stoked to see it in Oceanside. I recall it being a delicious and a wonderful dining experience. I have been looking forward to bringing my family and friends here all week. I am giving this restaurant 3 stars, because their food is still AMAZING and their staff is super nice and I believe deep down inside that they just had a REALLY OFF night. We had reservations for a party of 9 last night. The table was set up nicely and accommodated a few extra if needed, which I thought was cool. We started with some adult beverages: an Old Fashion, some Hotel Nacionals, a Fashionably Late, and a couple of beers. Everything started great. Dennis, our server was very cool and friendly and gave great suggestions. We ordered the mac and cheese sides and they were delicious with huge pieces of savory bacon in them. We also ordered the brussel sprouts which we never received and didn't even realize it until the very end when we received the bill because of all the other issues we had... but we'll get to that in a moment. But let's talk about what did go well... the delicious food we did get. We ordered the Pig burger which was sooo good and came with crispy fries. The fish for the fish and chips were 2 huge pieces and were delicious, came with yummy seasoned waffle fries and the tiniest tartar sauce and malt vinegar. I had to request 4 more for that amount of fish, but no big deal. Dennis brought out as much as we needed. Their ranch sauce is really good too. Don't judge just because it's a little peachy'ish and looks thousand island'ish. lt's still some very good ranch. My son said he really tasted the bitterness of beer in the fish batter but maybe it was just in that piece he had; I could not taste it in the piece of fish I ate. The short rib was really tender and delicious... the sauce was just a tad salty for my taste, but the mashed potatoes it sat on sort of balanced it out a little. The fried chicken thighs were really cooked well, juicy, crispy and seasoned perfectly. We ordered two Teres Major steaks. One rare with mashed potaoes, one medium rare with grits. The rare one came out medium and without any mushrooms, took FOREVEEERR to remake (the rest of the table was almost done with our meals...& not sure why it took so long since the restaurant wasn't that busy and it's a RARE steak). The one with grits came with mashed potatoes instead of grits. Dennis was super nice and apologetic and corrected both mistakes when we let him know. He then brought us a big bowl of grits. The manager (blonde gal) came over and apologized for the mistakes tonight, letting us know that usually does not happen, and let us know she'd be comping one of our steaks and would be bringing a dessert on them. We thought that was very nice of them. However, as nice a gesture. we never did receive that dessert. My husband handed Dennis his credit card before the bill arrived (before our friends could try to pay the bill) and not sure why but our bill never came, and we never saw Dennis again either after he boxed up our leftovers and took the card. We had to ask another server for our bill because we had been waiting for quite a while... and needed to head out as we were already late to meet friends at a lounge. The other server came back with my husband's credit card, the bill (that's when I finally noticed the brussel sprouts sides we never got but were charged), and let the server know. He immediately apologized and took it off the bill. So I'm not sure what happened last night at Flying Pig...missing and charged brussel sprouts, steak overcooked, missing mushrooms, mashed potatoes instead of grits, then a comped dessert promised but never delivered. WOW. I had to apologize to my friends. I was totally hyping up this place and it underdelivered. They automatically got their 20% gratuity for our party of 9 but anyone that knows me knows how much I absolutely love great service combined with exceptional food and that could have easily been a 30-35% tip had they been on their A game! We only come to Oceanside once a year. Maybe we will try again next year. Maybe not. This trip was about trying out a bunch of different restaurants and giving honest reviews on dishes/businesses we haven't tried before, or in a long time. Do better guys. read more

Went there about 1:30pm on a Monday afternoon and the place was pretty dead. Super quiet, had maybe 2 more people come in while my friend and I were there. I ordered the Rockfish sando with shoestring truffle fries. My friend ordered the fried chicken sando with slaw. Both of our sandwiches were DELICIOUS! Fish was cooked SO PERFECT. SUPER FLAKY, super fresh. Shoe string truffle fries were just the right amount of truffle flavor with a solid CRUNCH on them. *chefs kiss* The fried chicken sandwich was basically 2 chicken tenders in a sandwich. We stumbled upon Flying Pig during our most recent spring visit to Oside, and I can guarantee we won't miss eating here during any future visits. I would say the 5 star review started with the initial phone call to check availability. Shawn, Dennis & Eddie totally added to our experience. Super positive!! The place is really cute, inside and out. The decor is clever and makes you feel comfortable. It's very inviting. There is a lot of seating and a bar area. You could come alone or with a large family. We ordered some standard drinks and then moved on to the menu. I am the deviled egg queen in my home and circle. This is the first time I have had deviled eggs where I immediately wanted to change something about my own recipe. The fried chicken thighs were perfectly made and every detail of each plate was well thought out. Mashed potatoes and gravy are one of my many weaknesses. They nailed it. We hosted a Wedding Welcome Party for our son and his fiancé at The Flying Pig on July 23rd and WOW! We reserved the whole restaurant as we had 100 people scheduled to come. Their crew pulled out all the stops to make it a fantastic and memorable night! We couldn't have been happier. First off, I contacted their manager, Michaela, who sold me on the place by just being herself: helpful, friendly, accommodating and truly on top of everything. She worked with our budget and immediately wrote back with full details on timing, menu options and things I wouldn't even have thought about. It was clear that she had experience with big groups and we would be in good hands. Michaela had a full staff on board, each working hard to ensure our guests were well taken care of. When we walked in, everything was set up to perfection! The "Grazing Table" is a MUST for a party! Aaron, the owner, creates this masterpiece herself. It really takes your breath away. She fills it with every delectable thing you can imagine and it looks like a work of art! The Grazing Table was set up in the bar area, and was an impressive sight when people arrived. The guests were delighted and many sought Aaron out to compliment her. 100 people grazed on it all night with gusto, and it miraculously was still beautiful at the end of the night! In the main dining room, they served both pulled pork and fried chicken sliders with tons of sauces and coleslaw, plus mac n cheese and chicken wings. It was important for me that there was plenty of food, and trust me, the food just kept coming out, hot, fresh and delicious! People went back and back all night and there still were leftovers in the end. If you ever dine there (and I hope you do), please complete your meal with the Mac n Cheese! Guests keep calling me and raving about it! We had the Mac n Cheese served without bacon as we had some vegetarians attending, but I imagine it would be delicious with bacon as well. The service: A+, outstanding!! Joe was our main bartender and I can't say enough about how well the bar service was run. They had a wine bar in the front area and served beer on tap as well. No one waited for their drinks! In fact, our guests commented that the servers went around the room pouring wine and asking if they needed anything else from the bar! When Aaron saw my elderly relative arrive with his cane, she rushed over to be sure he got seated and asked what she could bring him from the bar. Joe got the couple's slideshow running by putting flash drives in the TVs behind the bar. They also let us bring in a TV to show the slideshow in the main room. The whole staff worked together to make the evening seamlessly festive and fun! I know this is a long review, but in today's world, quality and customer service can be rare. Delicious southern style place. Finally made the trip in for lunch with friends. The service was great and the place was homey and cute. Most of us ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries. Parking in Oceanside is relatively easy, free for 2 hours with lots of parallel spots available, although you may have to drive around the block once or twice to find an open one. They have a small patio out front of the restaurant, as well as dining room seating and bar seating. I got the BBQ Pork Patty Melt (pork patty, pulled pork, white cheddar, pickled onions, BBQ sauce) with fries. The service was very slow and the seating was challenging for my 8 year old... low with random cushions the kept slipping. We moved chairs around and grabbed blankets and got it worked out without any help from staff. Porkbelly appetizer was overcooked and lacked anything special that made it memorable. When we first arrived, there is no sign saying "please wait to be seated" and no one greeted us, so we just stood there waiting to see what happens. Finally, my partner asked the bartender if we seat ourselves, but nope, we were waiting for someone to help us. Mind you, we arrived around 1 pm on a Saturday. Luckily there was hand soap. I ordered the pear salad, my partner ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and my family ordered the Brandt backyard burger and Mac n cheese. We all agreed the shoestring fries were fresh and crispy, but needed salt. The Mac n cheese also needed salt, but good cheese. There is no s&p on the table. My partner and I thought the pear salad was really good; my kind of salad because I love fruit and funky cheese (blue cheese) in my salads. My family enjoyed their burger with their ranch the most (upon request). The pulled pork is Carolina style (vinegar based sauce). We felt the service was more attentive during our lunch. This is a good spot for locals and tourists to try out because their lunch menu has a variety of things that may hit for different folks. But then our meals came and we took the first bite and almost Couldn't swallow. The pulled pork was soooo gross. There was no BBQ flavor AT ALL. I think instead of the sauce, they cooked it in just plain water. God..... The coleslaw was also a sad one. No flavor what so ever. They forgot to put salt in. To put salt on the wound, I saw some pickles on my plate, I was like these pickles gonna be good (hopefully)..... But nope! They were the grossest pickles I have ever had..... They tasted like water........ There was no salt and no flavor! As I was just thinking how this place has such good reviews with this disasterous food quality, the waitress answered my thoughts. She came to check on us.... I mean what are we gonna say, that this is allll gross food. As we kind of said we are ok, she said "we have a new chef" and all of it made sense! But I don't see this as being their new chefs fault or the waitress's fault. This is all the manager/owner's fault! When you hire a new chef, for at least 2 weeks, you need to quality test, every dish that is being made in your restuarant before the plate reaches your guests. I bet you, if the manager/owner tried that pulled pork, cole slaw or the pickles, they would have puked from being so gross. I seldom write this detaily review, but when I do, I do it so the business can see what they are doing wrong and FIX the issue! We came on a Monday when it was very slow--pretty much only one server was working. Because of that, we ended up waiting quite a while for the food, probably close to 45 minutes to an hour. That said, the food was very good. Here are a few highlights: Fried Catfish - A must-try. The breading was terrific and the catfish was fresh. Absolutely delicious. (5/5) Caesar Salad - Super fresh, and it's clear they make the dressing in-house. Great flavors and a much-needed serving of greens. (5/5) Pulled Pork Sandwich - Very flavorful with a nice BBQ sauce. Definitely recommend. (4.5/5) It's worth coming if you're looking for good food, but it's definitely better if you're not in a rush. Parking - Plenty of nearby street parking. read more

Two weeks later and I'm still thinking about this spot. Pulled up to The Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen on a perfect California spring Friday night, and it delivered across the board. The beer and drink selection alone is worth the visit--tons of options whether you're keeping it casual or trying something new. Food-wise... the Bacon Mac N Cheese was next level. Rich, flavorful, and exactly what you want it to be. My buddy (who was literally about to move out of town) went with the burger--and let's just say he picked the right "last meal" in Oceanside. What really stood out though was the service. Top of the line from start to finish. Big shoutout to Mitch--young guy, super personable, clearly takes pride in what he does. He was everywhere in the best way, checking in on tables, making people feel taken care of. Honestly, the way he moves, he should be serving--he's got that natural touch. Some restaurant is just a straight win. It is July 4th weekend and i finally have the weekend off in 3 years. (Yes, i switched job) Naturally, i planned to spend some time with my mother. It is not alot of time and my plan is to just stopping by Oceanside for a quick walk and lunch. Flying pig caught my eye when i got on the main street. I am not sure is it because of their outdoor decor or the outdoor seating. It just seems like a good place to eat. Once i was seated, i can tell that i made the right choice. The waiting staffs were quick, warm and friendly. They all know the menu like the back of their hands. We ordered a steak & egg and a fish bowl. They are great. This is probably our favorite on Mission. Food is always good as are the drinks. Service is always great we usually eat at the bar if dining just the two of us. They can accommodate large groups in their main dining room. Priced right for the location & food choices. You can't go wrong. read more

Fun, kid friendly, great service, and good food. We arrived on a summer Sunday night around 630pm and were able to get indoor seating promptly. I would encourage reservations especially if you have a large group. They offer a kids menu and provided some crayons for the kid's menu/activity sheet. The kids cheeseburger and fries and Mac and cheese were a hit. The fries were extra thin and crispy. The kids portions are fairly large. The adults had the fried chicken and mashed potatoes, shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes appetizer. Everything was good, but highly recommend the fried chicken as it was so juicy.
