So a fellow Yelper and I decided to cross another one off our list. Enter Valentine in the Melrose District. It's very dimly lit for dinner service, but makes for a great romantic ambiance if that's what you're after. We started off with the Sonoran Wheat Pretzel as an appetizer. It comes with a housemate whipped hen butter which was amazing! Very light and fluffy in texture and smooth on the palate. It meshed well with the honeycomb. The pretzels themselves were nice and fluffy on the inside and we liked that they were hot and fresh! I couldn't decide on an entrée, but ultimately chose the Elote Pasta. We both did. It was unique in flavor and we especially appreciated the presentation as it literally looks like an elote corn on the cob. I ordered the Jungle Bird cocktail and I loved it. Perfect balance of sweetness and alcohol. You know how I like 'em! Service was fantastic as we never had to flag anyone down and we were very well taken care of throughout our visit. I did drop a star because it was pretty hot in the dining room. It made the experience slightly uncomfortable but we worked with it. Also, the pasta was tasty, but we both agreed it needs more sauce. It was a bit dry for my liking, but the flavor was definitely there. Other than that, I would come back for sure. The pricing isn't bad and parking is kind of tight, but it's not horrible. Try out Valentine!
Amazing place and now one of our favorites! We tried brunch and can't wait to go back Recommend making reservations. Very hip.place. our waitress was so sweet and wonderful! They have a large variety of unique flavor pastries and they all look amazing. We tried the guava cream cheese croissant and it didn't disappoint. They also have gf options. Drinks have a variety of cocktails wines and coffeea all sounded grea. We tried a peppery coffee and tumeric latte which were the best. For food we got the croque madam and the dulche de leche gf waffle. Both so good. My only thing was the waffle was incredibly sweet and covered in so much flavor. On the side we got a sage breakfast patty which was also full of flavor. Decent prices and next we want to try dinner!
My son and I came here for breakfast just a couple days after they got the honor of being listed in the Michelin guide. It was pretty full, but they were kind enough to ask somebody to move down at the bar to make two seats together for us. I really appreciated that because a lot of places won't do that. The decor here is so bright and airy with lots of tables and chairs. There are more loungy areas with low, upholstered chairs. If all has kind of a mid-century modern feel. There is a bar on one side. You can see right into the kitchen which, if you know me, is something i like. We sat it at the bar, which somehow feels very communal - - and I love it. I ended up making a new friend while I had my breakfast. In the same building is a vintage store, which is definitely worth a visit. There is a speakeasy, too, but, you know, it was only 9:30 a.m. I ordered the Chiltepin Shakerato, which is an iced espresso shaken with Chiltepin chile and cacao. It was sooooo good! For breakfast I had the daily quiche (which comes with a side salad) and my son had the Tres Leches French Toast. Both were delicious! The French toast was ooey and gooey and so good. One of the things that I noticed here and that I really applaud this place for is the wonderful hospitality. Everybody I encountered had a smile and really seemed to like their jobs and really wanted to please the customer in the friendliest way. Great staff makes great food even better!
We went for indulge in brunch I'm. We were seated as soon as we walked in very little wait. David greeted us at the table and immediately took our alcoholic beverage order. He was very attentive and prompt with the service and placed our initial order. Experience was subpar from that point. The other servers weren't as attentive and some of the food items have room for improvement. Ordered the jalapeño cheddar cornbread while aesthetically pleasing seem to be a little denser and dryer than I am used to. But to each your own. We did ask for the cornbread to be warmed twice in. It came back still the temperature at when we received it. I also ordered the steak ace eggs which the steak was very tasty and I got my eggs scrambled. My friend ordered the tres leche toast, which never arrived as we figured it out in the order was never placed. But no one ever noticed that we didn't receive the item. She ended up only having a side of the steak. She visited this location previously with no issues with speed of service but midday on the Thursday seem to be challenging. Unsure if it was a staff that was working that attributed that. Highlight: Get the Mesquite Chocolate Miso cookie.... With the sea salt sprinkles .... DELICIOUS.
Valentine has such a beautiful, moody atmosphere. The ambience was definitely one of my favorite parts, and the service was great too. The menu has a really cool and unique concept, so I was excited to try everything. The pretzel was a little too chewy for my taste, although I really loved the honey served on the side. The steak was good, but honestly, it wasn't anything that wowed me. Also the hamachi crudo which is usually my favorite at any restaurant was not very good unfortunately. Overall, I think I was expecting more from the food because the menu sounded so interesting. Once everything arrived, I just wasn't blown away by the flavors. Definitely a nice spot for the ambience and experience, but for me, the food was just okay and didn't quite live up to the hype.
Oh.my.lantis... this place was phenomenal. Our server, David (4), felt more like a curator than a server. Everything he suggested was divine, and everything here is farm to table. We devoured the salmon dip, the trout, the cabbage (don't knock it until you try it), and the hamachi. I ate so fast I forgot to take pictures of everything, but I have included what I could 10/10
For way too long Valentine was sitting on my list of places to try. We had family visiting from Cali and they know one of servers working there, so they asked if I have been, I said no but I would love to go. I always planned to go for dinner, I didn't even know they were open for brunch. Well now I do, and it was SO delicious that I would like to come back to try other menu items. The ambiance of Valentine is like being in Palm Springs at a resort enjoying brunch. It's very mid-century modern and I love the decor. They have a large outdoor patio that is probably nice when it's not summer. We sat inside and noticed there is a vintage market (Modern Manor) attached to the restaurant, we went there after eating. (A cute place with some pricey items. I'll post a separate review of the store.) Our server Pete, he was exceptional. He knows my cousins' husband and he gave us the grand tour of the menu. His recommendations were spot on, and we wanted for nothing. We started with handcrafted drinks, I really enjoyed the coffee menu options, with unique flavors. I had the iced Cajeta latte with oat milk. Cajeta is like a Mexican caramel and was very good with espresso. I also tried the chiltepin shakerato (a slight spicy mocha) and golden milk (turmeric latte). I really liked all of them. Then we had a fantastic sampler plate of pastries-- piñon croissant, morning swirl, and churro croissant roll. Baked fresh, these are really great! My fave was the morning swirl. I would come back to try the other pastries alone. Next we had the chula seafood crudo with a delicious agua chile sauce. Then onto our entrees-- avocado toast, breakfast sando, tortilla espanola, tres leche French toast, tater tots, and for good measure the Sonoran dog. I was able to try all the dishes and everything was awesome. The toast used is a thick Texas toast type of bread that is called squash brioche-- so good! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, you can tell that Valentine cares about using fresh, local, high quality/ interesting ingredients with unique flavors. I mean they add trout roe to their Sonoran dog and serve with house made allium-nori chips... how fun is that?! And mesquite-pecan butter with sorghum-sage syrup for the French toast is so rich and sweet. That's a dessert type brunch dish for sure. We had so much food, we couldn't finish so we boxed up leftovers which heated up and tasted great the next day. I fully intend to come back for the dinner menu and have cocktails at Bar 1912. I look forward to it.
Always came for breakfast because the pastries and coffee are always on point. But finally came for dinner and it was phenomenal. Always such interesting dishes that have you wanting more.
Outstanding experience! If I could double the stars and give 10 stars I would. Our waiter Josh, was fantastic too! Local farmer for their meat, unique dishes with unique flavors. Huge wine list, even though I didn't order any. We ordered the olives with Mahon cheese (serves as a fabulous appetizer. We also enjoyed the Sonoran wheat pretzel (wow, it was delicious!!!!) then the elote pasta and the pork ribs. Pasta was a good portion and the meat on those ribs had delicious flavor and fell off the bone. You could ask for an additional one if you want. We then had dessert, I think they rotate them so if you want to try this unique and delicious and light corn cheesecake make sure they have it. It wasn't heave and the red corn masa crust flavors reminded me of flavors my mom used to bake. The ambience was soothing and cool. Octagon shaped bricks held wine bottles. Various types of seats for eating ...high counter seats that overlook the street and the Melrose sign, leather seats to sit comfortably with friends, the bar or various other seating options. Room for semi large groups or two seaters. Soft lighting throughout. Service was fantastic and while somewhat pricey, it was 100% worth every penny! Definitely a place to try and treat yourself to a fabulous meal. It's casual but if you dressed up you'd fit in well too.
I went to Valentine while I was in Arizona and had the burger, which came with tater tots covered in a really good sauce. The burger really surprised me it tasted amazing and was actually pretty affordable for this type of restaurant. The bartender even told me it's definitely their favorite item on the menu, and I can see why. I also had a couple of espresso martinis, and you can tell they use really good coffee as they use fresh espresso for them. The staff was friendly, and the place has a nice vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. I'd definitely come back.
You ever just sit down at the table, get handed the menu, glance at it for a second then look up at who you're with and have a shared look of "oh no" come across your faces? That was the experience our group had at Valentine. It's one of those places that's trendy and hip, and unless you're there to post to your instagram story, you'll leave wanting more. Our waiter explained that they recommend eating family style here, with the plate sizes getting bigger as you go down the menu. Maybe family style for like a nest of newly hatched birds. Half chicken, $42. No actual sides with that, just half a small chicken. 3 ribs? $24. That's $8 a pork rib. None of the food was out of this world flavors either to demand a premium price point. Not to be completely negative, the cocktails were all very enjoyable. We left here and went to In-N-Out as a group after since we were all still pretty hungry. And our tab at In-N-Out for the four of us was less than one half chicken at Valentine.
Amazing per usual! Got the smores pastry, churro pancake, the bfast sammie, the cajeta latte, and an iced cappuccino! The service is always amazing and super friendly! I love that there's a bar and furniture store attached!
My husband and I dined at Valentine on a Saturday evening and it was packed. I would recommend making reservations. Overall, I would rate the food 3.8 stars. It was good, but not good enough to return for dinner. I *might* consider trying the brunch menu, since there's better reviews for it. We started with a couple mocktails: I got the mango lassi and my husband ordered the matcha melon. We both enjoyed our own drinks better than each others. The mango lassi was more yogurt-y than mango, and had a hint of lime. The matcha melon was more match-y than melon. Both were refreshing. We ordered the famous pretzel which came out hot and fresh. It's sort of a cross over between a pretzel and a donut as it was on the sweeter side. It came with whipped butter and honeycomb which was a great combo. This tasted more like a dessert than an appetizer, but I enjoyed it. We also ordered the octopus, bison tartare, and elote pasta. Everything was pretty good but it was so salty, especially the octopus. Nothing was outstanding though. We ordered the charred cabbage which took so long to come out that I thought our server forgot about it. When it finally arrived, it just looked straight up burnt. The inside was a little better, but when I took a bite, it tasted like ocean water. It's as if it was brined in salt for 24+ hours which is really excessive for cabbage. We asked our server to take it back since we only had one bite each. I do not recommend ordering this. Our server took awhile to give us our check. But it turns out, she surprised us with the gulab jamun dessert, which was nice. I enjoyed the cardamom ice cream but the gulab jamun (fried dough balls) were too dense and sweet. There were some hits and misses, but overall, I don't know if the hits were good enough for me to return.
The food was so good! It's really nice to see so much effort and creativity be put into a brunch menu. If this much care went into the brunch menu, we can't wait to come back to try the dinner items!! Everything was soo good, but if I had to choose one dish that you can't leave without trying, it would have to be the tres leches French toast. read more

I have no idea how I haven't been to this place before! Such a cute restaurant with great food and drinks on Melrose! Came here for brunch with a few girlfriends on a Saturday and it was definitely busy but we had reservation for brunch. Started off with an espresso martini here, and then got a non-alcoholic spritz. they have lots of unique cocktails, non alcoholic drinks, and coffee. I got the daily quiche which was delicious and I had a bite of the breakfast sandwich which was also delicious too! Mostly everything (if not everything) is made in house like their bread, certain liquors, pastries, etc. we also got the Churro waffle for "dessert" which was phenomenal, it was perfectly sweet, crunchy, and had whipped cream and like a caramel sauce. This place was super cute and vibey, and they even have an antique / vintage thrift store inside! All the staff were super friendly too and helped recommend popular items. Cant wait to try more here! read more

Very cute spot to go with friends and family. You order first and then it gets brought to the table you choose to sit at. The matcha drinks are so refreshing and definitely try the Melon matcha that's my go to every time. You can't go wrong with the chocolate chip cookie too it's so tasty! read more

Went here on a Sunday morning. Parking is sparse so I parked in the neighborhood and did a short walk over. I sat at the bar since it was just myself. Place is small but appears to have a good amount of seating. There is seating outside as well. Staff was attentive and nice. They have me a very warm greeting. I got the squash latte to start and it did not disappoint. I think it is probably the best latte I've ever had. It was earthy and sweet. Just a perfect balance. The beautiful latte art also helped. I got the avocado toast which was not impressive. It lacked flavor and salt. The salmon on it was good, but overall, it missed the mark for me. The thin slices of whatever (looked like apple, tasted like nothing) made it difficult to eat and to me, didn't add anything to the dish. Lastly, I got a vanilla corn cappuccino which was good and well-made. Something did settle at the bottom of the cup, making my last few sips gritty, but the flavor of the drink itself was good. I will be back to try more drinks and dishes. read more

Awful experience, don't go there. After a really bad visit, I left a review only to be inundated by emails from the person in charge that, by the way did nothing but waste my time. It looks like they didn't even look at the review. Got the dates wrong.... So frustrating, I had to ask him to stop emailing me. Don't waste your time. Buy the way, this individual just posted one of the many emails I got from him, like 7 or so. And he keep on asking for my credit card number, well i didn't use one because I never received my food after 30 minutes!!!! It was just an appetizer. Then I said please gime me my check for the half glass of wine a had, so the female bartender with short brown hair told me, we are sorry about this, no charge for the wine.( that i didn't finished, btw). So Blaise is asking for a credit card? Get it together!!! Simply horrible! The person that takes your order should follow up on the item, instead of just waiting for nothing to happen, if 10 minutes go by, you need to ask where the item is. At 20 minutes; I asked, where is my appetizer? He simply said we are slammed, after 30 minutes, it just gets ridiculous... so is when I asked for the check. No food was delivered to me. read more

It was packed, but unlike other restaurants in James Beard territory, there was no ego there. No manufactured waits or imposed time limits or condescension. The staff are humble and kind- simply inviting you in to dine with friends. This culture is the backdrop of a beautiful culinary experience. We had the pasta, steak, ribs and potatoes. The presentation was beautiful, the flavors were balanced and there was a unique playfulness in each dish that made us want to try everything on the menu. The cocktails were equally fun and delicious- many with house made ingredients. We can't wait to go back for brunch and pastries. Shout out to our bartender, Decker! It's obvious she loves what she does. She was a gem- patient, kind, attentive and a ton of fun. In a city full of great food options, this thoughtful and heart-filled experience is what sets one restaurant apart from the rest. I had a TERRIBLE first experience here. My gf and I went today and were excited to finally try it out. First don't go here if you are hungry. It took 25 mins to get out first plate l. Did not come out at the same time. Then another 5 mins to get mine. So 30 mins total to get two plates of food. My gf ordered the breakfast sandwich and it was ok. Noting special the bread the dry AF. And they put soooooooooo much pepper on the eggs. Like it was a mistake how much they put. I ordered the taco trio and it was super salty which is saying something because I love salt. And it was COLD!!! I let the waiter know when he came to chk on us and he sent it back to remake it. While i waited he brought a croissant so I could eat something. I was already over the whole experience. The food came 10 mins later my gf was already done with her food ( yes she shared lol ) and the food was hot this time but the potatoes were under cooked . The food now tasted like nothing . Couldn't taste the bacon just very one note. I did get the avocado added and that tasted like nothing. The cheese sauce was ok but again was cold both times. My gf got the vanilla latte and she like that. I won't be returning. I wish my money was returned. Side note it's loud so be awake if that and you order at the bar when you walk in then get a table. read more

This place was recommended to me by my brother in law, who raved about the Sonoran Wheat pretzel. My daughter decided she wanted to stay in but my friend came down from Tucson to visit me while I was in town, which was perfect...I could have easily found my teenage daughter something great on the menu but the place has a nice, casual, mid century modern vibe. Great for adults to sit, relax, catch up...they have a dining room & a lounge area if you just want to come in for cocktails. Servers were laid back yet informative of the dishes on the menu. Each dish we ordered was interesting, innovative and also included local ingredients. I had to try the pretzel, made with local ground wheat & served with the most delightful, whipped butter...Guinea hen butter. My friend & I couldn't really understand the origin of this butter but you don't really need to know! It's so good! The potato & yucca dish which our server help explain to me was basically scalloped potato's but in their most elevated form. The potato's were mandolin thin & cooked to the perfect consistency. It wa a really rich dish that paired excellently with the rich, meaty ribs. The menu is small & is rotating...but each dish we tried was so well thought of & well made. I wish we had more people with us so we could have tried more dishes...I would highly recommend this spot & return if I'm ever in the area. read more

Brought in a friend from out of town based on another friends suggestion. I initially ordered the octopus. Mistake. It didn't smell or taste edible. I ordered the beef heart instead based on the waiters suggestion. I was starving by that time- it didn't Do anything for me either, but I ate it anyway. My take away is you can't go wrong with the drinks! Go for the drinks! read more

I will be thinking and dreaming of this food for awhile I got the steak & eggs and the bloody bull. 10/10. I haven't had a breakfast in Phoenix like this in a very long time. I can't wait to go back. Our server was awesome, all the staff was great & had good vibes. I absolutely loved the layout and how open everything felt! Looking forward to our next meal here. read more

I ordered the "tortilla espanola yucca root - potato omelette , mahon cheese , squash escabeche, sunflower crema & sorrel 15 (gf)" and the "cayete latte". It was delicious. Yo. If you're a steak and eggs lover this is the place for youuuuuu!!!!!! I would eat it everyday if it didn't cost and arm and a leg. Hot take: the quiche should be warmed up I had to request for it to be heated cuz I guess it's served cold??? Ambience is great too such a cute place to catch up with a friend. I wish I lived closer because wow this place was great. I went for brunch and the baked goods were amazing, and the lattes were very unique flavor-wise. Most importantly, the french toast was to die for. It might be one of the best French toasts I've had, it's at least up there. read more

This place is til notch fresh ingredients and most welcoming service! Staff is super knowledgeable about their menu. Crispy cauliflower is absolutely delicious and highly recommended. Night cap in their cocktail lounge with perfect mood lighting was a great way to end the evening with an espresso martini paired with their cafe de olla chocolate cake! read more
4.75/5 If someone asks you "Will you be my Valentine at Valentine" you should definitely say yes! When I took a look at the menu here I knew I instantly had to try this spot out, and on Valentine's day, there could be no better named place to go to for breakfast. It wasn't too busy when we came here around 9 but it did get busy as we left. The menu has a lot of delicious sounding options as well as delectable looking pastries at the counter so it was hard to pick just one thing to get so naturally I got a breakfast entree and a pastry to share. I opted for the tamale bowl and shared a passion fruit danish with lime zest. I also was intrigued by their beverage menu so I tried out a cajeta latte. The cajeta latte was lovely to behold and had very smooth coffee with the milk and caramelized goat's milk. It seems like the caramel is placed on the bottom first then the coffee with no additional mixing before it is topped off with the frothed milk because most of the caramel flavor was in the last few sips of coffee so it was quite the sugar rush! The tamale bowl was amazing. I loved the combination of ingredients and the different flavors. I especially enjoyed the carrot mole sauce. It's a vegetarian bowl and you don't miss the meat at all. The pastry was tasty and tart as passion fruit naturally is quite acidic. The passion fruit center was super runny which made it a little hard to eat but the pastry itself was flaky and rich and I used the pastry edges to dip into the passion fruit puddles that formed from the runny center dripping onto the plate. Service at the counter was friendly and polite. The vibe in here is retro since the restaurant is a converted motel. I would definitely come back again! read more
I went here for a celebratory dinner with my team for the launch of our magazine. I've never been before, but some of my teammates have been to the bar and/or for breakfast/lunch so I took their suggestion. I walked in and I fell in love with the ambiance and low lighting, but as soon as me and the first half of my party that arrived early and were seated, our server gave me very strange vibes. This might sound stupid but when they asked us if we are celebrating anything, I excitedly told her the occasion, and the entire time they were giving me this straight faced, thousand yard stare. I don't judge a person off their facial expressions off the bat (I have RBF too lol), so although slightly unsettled, I brushed it off. Here comes the main reason why I gave this place a low rating. It was mainly a lot of miscommunication by both us and the server regarding the cake we brought in from a different establishment. This cake was custom made from a local AZ family bakery, and the design on the top had a design on it that cost me extra money as it is our organization's newest logo. Only me and one of my teammates knew what the cake looked like, and its design was gonna be a surprise for the rest of our team after dinner. As soon as the other half of my party arrived a few minutes later, they brought the cake with them, and the server came back around and offered to put it in their back fridge/freezer. They did not clarify that there would be a $20 charge once "the cake hits the table" until almost to the end of our meal. While I kind of understand there being some sort of charge for outside food, I was mostly annoyed that the server did not clarify this earlier. Also when I made the reservation online on Resy, I mentioned that we were bringing a cake. Nevermind that I also thought the price was pretty high just to cut a cake? So my team and I debated on whether on just leaving with the cake to avoid the fee, but decided to take the L and pay up in order to have the convenience. The manager walked past us right after we told the server to *bring out the WHOLE cake*, who overheard our confusion about the price and said "they'll bring it out with a candle". That was nice to hear...until I saw the server bring it out already cut into separate plates. Also there were no candles like the manager had said just minutes earlier. I really tried to be reasonable and empathetic but I still cannot comprehend how the server didn't follow our instructions, as we even said we'd like to take a picture of it. We ate our slices and ask to see the rest of the uncut cake to show the team of what the rest of it looked like. The cherry on top was the fact that we were "accidentally" charged twice for the cake cutting service ($40), so we had to request it to be fixed (later the manager found us again in the parking lot right after we left the restaurant to ask us how our service was, and she clarified that the charge was $20 because there was some sort of professional chef. Which like, okay fine I guess. My frustration was unfortunately just compounded upon from the moment I got the the establishment, despite me trying to be reasonable. The manager was pleasant but it's mostly the server and their service that made it a very weird night for me and my team. We will not be returning at all. read more

Was influenced by a video on the internet to try the elote pasta at Valentine and it did not disappoint. My partner and I don't usually go out to places like this because we can't afford it, but this was worth saving up for and sharing the experience together. It's a shame that while sitting there all I could think was "You and I are this restaurant's target demographic, yet we don't live the lifestyle that is needed to frequent such a place.". Even still, it was dreamy to cosplay upper-middle class folks and eat such thoughtful and delicious food. We shared 3 plates and savored every bite. At one point I teared up. Our waiter (and seemingly the other waiters too) was a mirror reflection of our local dive bartender and his chill demeanor made him both approachable and weirdly intimidating in a fun way. The space was very cute and cozy. The one star missing is for the first hostess who "welcomed" us in. She asked if we had a reservation (the place was basically empty all for 4-5 groups of people scattered around) and we said no. She said, "Well, the bar is wide open- actually never mind. Are you guys okay with outside seating?". We reluctantly agreed and after sitting on the patio for all of 3 minutes I said, "I didn't drive all the way out here and save my tip money for the week to not sit inside to enjoy my meal.". Seriously, if the patio was cute, maybe, but it was quiet and not as stimulating as the inside ambience. I got up and asked a new hostess, Adrian, if there was a long wait if we didn't have a reservation, and she said she could seat us immediately. My partner and I were both confused and decided whether or not this place would even be worth it to stay after being told originally that we couldn't sit inside without a reservation. I'm really glad we ended up staying or else we would have missed out on the fantastic food. To the first hostess, I'm praying for you, and hope you can learn to treat people (especially those who consider a night at Valentine a once every couple years opportunity) a little more hospitably. read more

Cute spot in Melrose attached to a vintage store and a speakeasy, they have it all. My go to' for breakfast are the tacos or any of their delicious pastries. If I am spicy, I will also order their margarita. They get busy in the morning , however, and service can be slow even when sitting at the bar. read more

No need for an am reservation. We operate as a fast casual cafe in the AMs. Just order from the barista and sit wherever you like.
