Organic Tofu Rice & Cabbage Bowl
    Daisy S.

I found Umami Express on DoorDash when seeking for a healthy vegetarian meal near the downtown SJ area. I ordered their organic tofu rice & cabbage bowl and loved it! I like that they have a half rice and cabbage and all rice option in case you are looking for a lower carb meal. Man I wish I could prepare meals like this at home! Also, the portion was so generous. I've been noticing a lot of the newer bowl spots skimp you on the portions and are still pricy. I could have honestly probably stretched this bowl into two portions if I wasn't so hungry. The tofu was nicely seasoned and the orange sesame sauce was delicious! The water chestnuts were a nice touch. Definitely recommend.

So what y'all not gone do, is play in my face! I normally will try to stall a restaurant out but not in this case. This food is OVERPRICED! And just simply does NOT taste good. Even when I tried to add the lil sauce they gave me on the side didn't add any flavor. Nope! don't do it, save your coin & get something else

I love ordering healthy-ish bowls when I'm too lazy or busy to make lunch for myself, and I've had Umami Express on my radar for a while. I like that they have an assortment of protein options with very reasonable prices. I ordered the Organic Tofu Rice and Cabbage Bowl for myself and the Pork Shoulder Rice Bowl for my boyfriend to eat later. I thought my bowl had a great amount of each item, and I really like that the tofu is organic. The Umami rice is also quite tasty. However, the Pork Shoulder Bowl had a pretty small portion of meat. I also get what people mean when they say the bowl itself isn't very flavorful. It does rely heavily on the chili oil crunch and the soy sauce, which are both delicious -- but you'll need a decent amount of it!

2.75 For easter season, Im pushing meat to the side. So sorry nice I had not done my meal prep, I jumped on a food delivery service and ordered a Rice bowl call "Organic Tofu Rice Bowl" According to the menu it is: "base of shiitake-garlic heirloom forbidden & brown rice, slow baked organic tofu, crisp water chestnuts, steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, fresh green onion, toasted sesame seeds, our house-made szechuan chili oil crunch & choice of our signature sauce" The sauce I picked was garlic-sesame-soy sauce. By itself it was very yummy, but on top of the rice bowl it was blah-tasting b/c their was not enough sauce In the soufflé cup. Of course, extra sauce is optional with an extra charge from .95 (chili oil) to sauces @ $1.25 extra. The rice was plentiful, water chestnuts crunchy, green onions and tofu cubes were the standouts. The rest were just colorful fillers. Hopefully, someday I'll give them another experience . However I'll need extra sauces. Oh they also have protein bowl with chicken, beef, pork and wagyu beef As well as a coconut green smoothie. This establishment is from a Ghost Kitchen concept, as well.

The salted egg yolk fried chicken wings were awesome. They come out looking super red, but they are not spicy. Great flavor, super good, and very yummy. The cumin lamb was excellent too. It had a little spice, but not too bad, and the lamb was really soft. The mapo tofu with pork was good, but very spicy. The tofu itself was good. The Sichuan high wok was tasty, but it got spicier and spicier the more I ate it, so just be ready for that. Honey walnut shrimp came out very crispy and the sauce was light. The flavor was not too bad, but the shrimp flavor did not come through as much. The Yunnan rice noodle soup with pork and pickled cabbage was good, and the soup itself had nice flavor, but I wish it had more meat. Beef and scallion dumplings were average. Sauteed greens were solid and definitely necessary to balance out the meal. Service was relatively quick, which was nice since we ordered a good amount of food. Everything came out at a good pace, and the meal felt easy overall. Nothing too fancy on the service side, but it got the job done. The inside feels like a big cafeteria. It is fine, but not really a place you go for ambiance. It was also a little hot inside, which made the spicy dishes feel even spicier. Overall, Home Eat is a good spot for flavorful Chinese food, especially if you like spicy dishes and salted egg yolk fried chicken wings.

Other than a few items coming out less than warm, (and yes I'm not talking about the items that come out cold already) all of us really enjoyed everything! Big problem though, the service. Waiter is very much not attentive to anyone. Doesn't look customers in the eye, provides minimal service, hell, we had to ask the support staff to bring us chopsticks for food we had delivered to us 10 minutes ago, which grew cold. He never checked in on us, and we were charged 20% gratuity since we were 12 people. I don't mind auto-gratuity, but when the service is nonexistent, it really doesn't sit well. Overall it was a good experience, but the service is the deciding factor of anyone one of us 12 returning. Really unfortunate service from our waiter, other support staff seemed really nice, but he wasn't in charge of taking care of us, sadly. We were thoroughly ignored. Again, food was good, but service was so poor that this review is mainly negative. Edit: to top is off, delivered the wrong food twice, we cancelled our pork belly buns because they took too long/he ordered mala buns for us instead. Another addition: charged us twice for sea salt cream that we didn't order, and tried to say that we did order it.

Prices have been going up over the years where only the monthly special is enticing for the value. Servers were friendly and checked in on us, but it took 25 minutes for our food to show up at our table after we ordered. The only consistent experience I've had are the oranges at the end of the meal. They are always amazingly sweet, juicy, and comes off the peel easily. I don't usually enjoy oranges, but I love the ones HomeEat offers! Will be back if in the area, but hope kitchen service will be quicker in the future.

This is one of the handful of American Chinese restaurants that stood the test of time. As is typical of these places, there was an old lady manning the counter and also acting as the server. And as is typical of these places, there was table at the end where they were prepping the fruits and veggies. It's truly remarkable how they are all similar in these ways! We got a couple of dishes and they came out at lightning speed. * Chowmein-3/5- delicious with lots of umami flavor but shockingly greasy. I mean I am used to oily noodles but this one exceeded some limits. *crispy salt and pepper eggplant-3/5- I had a stellar version of this dish at another restaurant in Sunnyvale and was stoked when I saw this on the menu here. Unfortunately it was a poor representation of the dish I loved there. The batter was too much and the dish felt heavy. The hot oil or sauce they had felt old and extremely vinegary as well, I would recommend avoiding it.
