Was in town for a wedding and decided to try this place the day I flew in. I was craving a Tasty Pot/ Boiling Point meal and saw Home Eat had that. The restaurant was huge and so was the menu! There were tons of options that looked good. I ended up ordering the Lamb hot pot which I was craving and saw pictures of but it wasn't what I expected. It was labeled as spicy but I think it would've have been good to note on the menu that it was the mala numbing spicy. I felt like they put way too much of the oil where I couldn't even enjoy the meal because it was so overpowering. I was a bit disappointed. The portion was big though. The flavor was not too bad, but the shrimp flavor did not come through as much. The Yunnan rice noodle soup with pork and pickled cabbage was good, and the soup itself had nice flavor, but I wish it had more meat. Beef and scallion dumplings were average. Sauteed greens were solid and definitely necessary to balance out the meal. Service was relatively quick, which was nice since we ordered a good amount of food. Everything came out at a good pace, and the meal felt easy overall. Nothing too fancy on the service side, but it got the job done. The inside feels like a big cafeteria. It is fine, but not really a place you go for ambiance. It was also a little hot inside, which made the spicy dishes feel even spicier. I will always stand by the fact that I think one of the most cringiest facts of NorCal is that their restaurants close super early and if you're a night owl, you're kind of screwed, but thank god Home Eat isn't one of those places! It's located in Downtown San Jose near the park (Park Con) and the convention center (walking distance) and is open fairly late especially compared to other eateries in Bay Area. Menu is quite expansive with a wide, diverse range of dishes, portions are huge, and there's lots of tables and seating. Very big restaurant. Recommend hitting up during Fanime. Even later at night, around 2 hours before closing, the restaurant was decently busy. Despite this the food came out decently quickly and the service was super efficient. We got the spicy Mongolian whole lamb pot with a side of rice and that dish was far more than enough for 2 people, even if it was the small portion. It comes with stewed lamb on the bone. bean sprouts, napa cabbage, tomato, scallions, bok choy, and vermicelli. Not super spicy, it's the chili oily type of Chinese spicy if you know what I mean and there's a slight sour taste to it from the sauerkraut that I think was also included. The lamb meat was super tender and slid off the bone. With the denseness of the soup, goes great with rice. Not something I'd eat on my own but I don't mind coming back to try more of their menu. They were also nice enough to give us complimentary oranges as dessert! That's how you know that they're legit. read more

You don't need to add soy sauce or hot sauce to the chow mein..it's good on its own..most chow mein is rarely good on its own but this chow mein is bomb as is. The restaurant was quite packed here during lunch and also a little later. They offer banquet facilities and catering for large parties and gatherings. There are a few televisions with food programming. The menu here is quite extensive, it has a wide variety of favorite regional dishes of Hunan, Yunan, Guangdong, and Taiwan, etc., so you can experience the best of Chinese cuisine. Parking is available on the street, parking meters accepts both coins and credit cards, and I believe there may be paying parking lots located nearby. Home Eat - ooh so good! I came with a friend after exploring downtown San Jose, and thankfully we came early, as tables were filling up around 7:00pm. Ordering was straightforward via a QR code, and a robot delivers food. At times, the staff walk by to refill utensils at each table - overall a minimal staff interaction kind of dining experience. We ordered fried chicken wings, shrimp fried rice, and Tidu beef pot. The fried chicken wings, oh these were so good they had me thirsting for more. We had the spicy ones, and these peppers had you either running or another wing or for a glass of water. The shrimp fried rice was as tasty as you could expect, home cooked comfort food - iykyk. The Tidu beef pot was also tasty with a good number of veggies. The beef was a bit on the tougher side, but it was enjoyable overall. Each dish came by the robot, and you had to transfer the dish yourself from the robot the table. Paying was fairly easy, though we had to flag down a waiter. We ordered a few dishes via DD from Home Eat. Was this one of the best taste wise that I have had? Not really, but it was solid and scratched that itch for Chinese food. I would definitely return. Their pricing is a lot better than most places and they give you a lot of food, which is really nice. We had the following: Beef Chow Fun 9/10 - The beef was tender and the flavor was really good. The noodles were thin and wide and had a good chew to them. My personal test on noodle dishes is how good they taste cold the next day and these really hit the spot in regard to leftovers. Honey Walnut Shrimp 4/10 - Somehow the crust around the shrimp tasted stale. It was weird. The shrimp were fresh and the black vein was cleaned out. The walnuts were raw. I prefer when they are slightly toasted. They also weren't sweetened like some places do, but I don't care either way on that. I liked that the sauce wasn't so heavy on the mayo and wasn't overly sweet. All in all it was not one of the better ones I have ever had and probably my least favorite of all the dishes. I wouldn't order this again. Pork & Shrimp Dumpling 7/10 - The dumpling had a nice chew to it but the fillings weren't overly flavorful. They barely give you any sauce with all those dumplings, which kind of sucked. The sauce is really heavy on the rice vinegar but I didn't mind that. They are a solid choice though. Mongolian Beef 6/10 - This smelled fantastic and had great flavor. The beef was a bit on the tough side but that wasn't really a big deal. My biggest problem with this dish is that it was LOADED with onions. There were just way too many onions. A massive amount of onions. If it wasn't for that I would have probably given this a 9 or 10 out of 10. Spicy Pepper Fried Chicken 10/10 - The flavor on these is so good (just writing about them makes me crave them). The spice level was nice. I would have preferred more spice but I also know I tend to like more spice than most people, so I totally understand the level they serve it at. There are peanuts in this one, which are tasty but just a warning to anyone with a peanut allergy. The crust was perfect on this. There were some overly hard pieces of crust in the batch but my dog liked crunching down on those pieces (no chicken, just chunks of crust). I would go back just for these. We also ordered two steamed rice sides and they added a third one to the order for free, which was really nice. And the sides were a good amount of rice. They also included some sort of soup. I don't know what it was. It looked kind of like an egg drop soup but the broth was a slightly cloudy, white-ish broth and there was corn in it. It was a little too sweet for me, but I love the fact that they included an extra item. I think that was really nice. Definitely a solid choice for Chinese food at a more reasonable price than most of the places around here. read more

I'm glad that this spot is opened late til 11pm, and we ordered our food around 8pm and picked it up within 25 minutes. The lady at the front was welcoming, and they were pretty busy on a late Sunday night. We got the eggplant combo, general tso's chicken combo, mapo tofu, and pork dumplings. Everything tasted yummy! I didn't really care for the wonton chips though. The mapo tofu had that nice kick to it, which I liked. They also gave us lots of utensils which is awesome! The inside of the place looked clean and modern. We found a spot on the street right outside to park briefly while I picked up the food. Evidently they still cross contaminate with walnuts. I've spent two evenings now trying to not take my bf to the e room. Him taking almost 200mg of Benadryl to thwart an eroom bill.
