Updating my review after ordering from DoorDash! I've ordered from the store many times in the past and it has never been like this. I ordered a full set with THREE additional items on top of that. The container is not even half full with food, this cannot constitute as even 1 regular order. There's maybe one or two pieces per item which is absolutely unacceptable. I ordered at least three protein items and there's ONE PIECE EACH and it's COMPLETELY MISSING the tendons. There's barely anything in here, this is 1/3 amount of what I would usually receive. I'm actually shocked that this place is popular. I've tried Mala Town in Vegas and it was good there so figured I'd give this location a shot but it was a completely different experience. All the veggies were pretty dirty here and looked anything but fresh, which made me hesitant to pick a lot of things. I think the bar needs to be upkept a lot better as I'm sure things got dirty from everyone's tongs since it's self serve, but nonetheless some of the stuff looked old as if it's been sitting out for a while. I found the sauce bar to be a bit flavorless but that could just be my taste palette, and they run out of sauce bowls pretty quickly if you go during prime time. This place was packed! I came in on a Friday evening and the line was out the door. I probably had to wait about 20 minutes before I could build my own bowl. With the amount of people that were eating mala, all of the ingredients were all still stocked up. I ordered the Tom Yum mala and my partner ordered the signature soup. The staff are really efficient since it was so busy. Some people didn't even fully walk out the door when they were done eating and they're already cleaning the table lol. After my partner and I sat down we shortly received our mala. It was all nice and hot and super delicious. I will say that the Tom yum was a little bit on the sweeter side, but the soup was still good. The seating is really cramped I feel like I was sitting with the table next to us since we were so close. Other than that, the environment's very lively since there's so many people eating there. Consistency is key! Mala Town has been busy every time I go here, but the quality is not consistent. I have trouble deciding if I want to order the signature bone broth in mild or medium. Sometimes when I get mild, the soup is just milky with no slight kick to it, other times when I get mild the soup has a strong kick to it. The ingredients are not restocked in a timely manner. Often times I find myself having to go back towards the beginning of the line to get the veggies that were initially not there when I was in line, but got restocked once I'm towards the end of the line. Quality of ingredients have gone down. Frozen tofu used to be one of my favorites/essentials here! However, Mala Town definitely replaced their frozen tofu with something else. It's no longer spongy, instead it's hard and chewy now. They also don't put out their dried shiitake anymore :( I'm able to overlook these negatives, as I can always add more chili oil to my soup if the "mild soup" is actually mild, having to go back in line to get ingredients that were restocked while I was in line, and try different ingredients instead of sticking with my essentials. The sauce bar is still great, and if you're in luck they'll have their complimentary tea out as well. Overall, I'm quite disappointed in how Mala Town has only gone downhill ever since I've introduced my friends and family to it. I will most likely be going to other malatang spots (like Miss Gu Malatang or Cuanyue Malatang) instead as I know they're more consistent and are actually worth the wait. read more

After trying YGF Malatang in the exact same plaza, we decided to try out Mala Town to see which is better. I can confidently say that I highly prefer Mala Town over YGF Malatang and will be back soon. [[ Some things I've noticed ]] 1.) Service - I thought it was really good. There is one person consistently going around giving you extra napkins, picking up plates, refilling water and I thought she did an amazing job with how busy we got. 2.) Busy - We went right when it opened at 11:30am and at first thought it wasn't very popular. Boy were we wrong......the line grew so quickly and so many people started coming in. After trying it out, I can totally see why it's so popular and why so many people came. 3.) Packed - Everything is assigned seating after you pay which is a bit annoying and the tables are packed close together. I felt like I couldn't really have a nice private conversation since everyone is so close to you and there are some awkward stares. I think even though you cannot choose your seats, it's so busy so if they allowed you to free roam or take bigger seats, a lot of people would be stuck waiting in line and it would not be optimal. It's inconvenient but understandable for the business. 4.) Food - Lots of variety and I'm pretty sure they'll have anything you could possibly want. There is also a sizeable sauce bar so you can create your dipping sauce. We personally tried the Tom Yum Soup (SO GOOD) and the Signature Broth - Mild and I loved them both. I took two friends here who were skeptical of Malatang places but this place blew us all away! This place is definitely a little more hip and modern if you need a good recommendation for friends visiting the area. All the staff are pleasant, welcoming, and helpful. You can choose your toppings, spice level, and broth type. There is also a sauce bar to create your own sauce. The soup is so filling and soothing on a cold day or even after a long day on your feet. I think you could make a light meal out of this place too depending on the toppings you grab. I love how clean the interior is and how neatly decorated the inside is. Previously there were multiple options of every ingredient for meats, vegetables, and seafood. The last few visits have been missing bok choy, fried fish roe balls, regular mushrooms, and squid pieces, and more. The shelled and unshelled clams are usually sitting in super cloudy or white water, a sign that the clams are filtering dirty water or the water itself is contaminated. My friend says this is the best malatang spot in the bay because the ingredients are freshest, and the line of people out the door on a Sunday night really sells it! You enter the line and pick up a pair of tongs and a large bowl. You move along the assembly line placing (potentially uncooked) ingredients in your bowl, as much as you want. The final price will be based on weight, so don't be a rookie like me and waste a lot of weight on plain tofu and vegetables and save it for things like fatty beef and quail eggs. At the register, you choose your broth type. The staff then take the bowl of ingredients to cook in the broth while you are assigned a table (don't sit just anywhere, your table is how they know where to bring your cooked bowl out). I got a wide variety of ingredients in the tomato broth, which was delicious. I am not sure how to describe the taste but definitely nowhere near western style tomato soup. One thing to note was that my actual content was mixed with my friends'--I got a few chunks of fish that I didn't get but my friend got. My friend got the bok choy that I got but he didn't. If I were allergic to any of the choices that were mixed into my bowl (I'm allergic to certain fish), that would be a big issue! Once we got to the store, thankfully we got into line and started filling up our bowls with all the goodies. I ended up going with the mild bone broth which was delicious while the hubby went with the spicy schezuan version. Both of us were happy and full by the end of the meal! This spot is more casual for food, but a good spot. You will be full and it's fun to pick what you want, but do note it does get a little pricey, we paid $50 for two bowls. We came here on a really busy day and the parking situation was frustrating. Even though the lot is big, it was very hard to find parking. Our spot got swooped, and we spent about 15 to 20 minutes circling before finally finding one. Not ideal, especially when you are already rushing between appointments. Because it was so busy, the line to pick up food was long. I did appreciate that they assign you a table, so you are guaranteed a place to sit, which helps during peak times. That said, the space itself is small, and it felt cramped. The servers seemed compressed with very little room to walk around, which added to the crowded feeling. I ordered the signature beef broth with medium spice. Despite the crowds, the food came out fairly quickly, which was a plus. The food itself is good and overall quality is solid. However, I would not recommend the Savory Mix. The name is misleading because it is not savory at all. It is very sweet and extremely peanut buttery, to the point where it was a bit overwhelming. I have been to another location before and found it much more spacious and less busy. This time we just happened to pick this location. That said, this spot is very lively and conveniently located right by 99 Ranch and HeyTea, which makes it a popular area. Good food and fast service, but be prepared for parking stress, long lines, and tight spacing if you come at peak times. read more
