The chicken katsu was fried well. Super crispy on the outside but the meat was not dry at all. I liked that both dishes had steamed cabbage and broccoli to help me feel better about eating more veggies The inside of the place was minimal with tables all my the wall. My husband and I came here for dinner around 6pm and the restaurant was half full. They don't seat you right away but ask that you order at the kiosk with a cashier first, which is a little bit strange but not too bad. The restaurant provides a menu in front of the register on a table, but the table is a little large so it's a little awkward reviewing the order on the kiosk and then paying because you have to lean over a bit. The cashier was polite though and told us to sit down anywhere and we picked a table nearby. The ramen came out very quickly! It hadn't even been five minutes before my miso ramen and my husband's miso ramen arrived. We were very surprised. My miso ramen was okay. The broth had a good miso flavor and the chashu pork was tender but a bit too salty for my taste. I liked that the ramen came with a hefty pile of beansprouts on top, although I would have liked more green onions or scallions on top for color. The ramen egg was marinated nicely and I could taste the umami flavor from the soy sauce it was marinated in. It is cooked a little more for a ramen egg than I'd like (I prefer my ramen eggs to have a runny, golden yolk when I eat my ramen) but the flavor of the ramen egg made up for it. My husband and I were surprised that this establishment also offers dim sum so we ordered a side of shrimp dumplings (hargow). The menu does have a note that any dim sum takes about 8 - 10 minutes to make, so it came out after our ramen. We were a little confused when the waiter brought out a plate of pork and shrimp siumai, but my husband inquired and it turned out they had given us the incorrect dish. The waiter apologized and a few minutes later we were given our shrimp dumplings. They were steaming hot and served in a bamboo serving. Taste-wise, they were okay with a mild shrimp flavor and a stronger ginger flavor. I noticed biting into it that the minced ginger had a couple of larger chunks that overpowered the shrimp. It was interesting to have dim sum at a ramen shop, but I don't think I'd ever order this again. It was a nice place for a quick bite for dinner. Have been meaning to try this ramen spot for quite a while. The menu is definitely interesting too as I don't know any other place that has both ramen and hawaiian food. It's also a quick service - order before sitting down and your food comes out in 2 minutes. We got the black garlic ramen (medium spice), which was super tasty but not spicy at all, and the tonkotsu ramen (mild spice), which was rather bland. It tasted more like chicken than pork. Lots of appetizers to choose from so we tried the lumpia. Would not get again. Bland as well and dipping sauce was just your chinese restaurant packets. Water cups were red solo cups - that was fun! Short rib had been calling my name all day long. So I checked Yelp for Hawaiian BBQ places between my office and my hotel. Ramen 101 was at the top of the list and had such pretty food pictures. When I entered, the restaurant was not very busy. As I browsed the menu, I realized that I was going to have a tough choice. I knew I wanted short rib, but I started thinking that the short rib would be lonely on the table. For this reason, I ordered the whole grilled squid to keep my short rib company. Both dishes were made to order and they tasted great. Quantity-wise, the portions were generous and I came nowhere near finishing either plate. My only gripe had to do with the amount of fat on the short rib. Maybe the cow should have hit tbt gym. Regardless, I had to cut around quite a bit. I've been here a couple times and it has always been terrific. A lot of times Hawaiian food is kind of sad and it seems overpriced here they give you a generous portion and the flavor is terrific. The vegetables were perfect and it's actually the best chicken katsu I've ever had. I also have the shumai which were very large pieces and I got some buns and what I really liked about the pork bun was that it was nice and juicy in the middle it wasn't all dried out. High recommendation. The lighting in the decor or the kinds of place you could take a date to but not a super fancy date but it's still pretty nice and you get the sit down experience service was pretty good people are friendly places very clean. I haven't enjoyed any ramen bowls for about 1.5 years. As I'm under the weather mostly due to these cold winters of dropping temps and atmospheric rivers overhead pouring river drops, I am left with a season full of coughs. So I'm sticking to hot soups, broths and stews as much as possible. My neighbor was kind enough to pick up Tonkotsu Ramen while driving through Milpitas. Although I knew it would take time to reach me, the broth was still warm, but I admit I love hot foods to be enjoyed hot, so I simmered before pouring broth over the black bowl containing perfectly blanched yellow ramen noodles, black mushroom caps, a fish cake, fresh mung/soy bean sprouts, and 2 small and thin pork tonkotsu. (But I don't recall seeing or tasting bamboo shoots) The broth came in a seperate plastic bowl with a tan color and was quite opaque in appearance and viscous to the tongue. In addition, the broth had a super thin layer of fat (oil) floating on the top (which personally I would have wanted more fat bc it adds flavor imho). This order was requested in the medium spice level and it was a perfect "medium spice" as it was more on the milder side of a "medium spice" range. In addition, I had one spam musubi which was not good (Order comes in a pair) It simply had way too much rice for the size of the spam. If the spam was thicker, then maybe they can use a thick layer of rice. It looked out of proportion. In addition, rice was dry tasting and spam appeared and looked dry, that the spam had a curve to it. In todays order, the spam masubi was a fail. read more

Randomly stopped here to meet some family for lunch. The food was so fresh and not greasy. We got the teriyaki chicken plate, beef plate, chicken katsu plate, spare rib plate, and the lumpia. The Grilled Chicken Ramen bowl is really big and served with large portions of food. I couldn't finish the soup lol. This place is a surprising find for me! Located in the same plaza as (or adjacent to) Walmart in Milpitas, I've seen the sign several times but never bothered to walk in. When I finally tried it out, the ramen was pretty good, and I was surprised to find that they also serve Hawaiian bbq and a great variety of appetizers. Their prices are pretty good compared to other restaurants in the area, and the quality and taste of their food is not lacking. I especially like their fried appetizers. I know Ramen 101 has other locations, but I can't speak for all of them since this is the only one I've been to. The servers are also extremely nice. It's certainly not going to break into the level of being "great" ramen, especially for enthusiasts, but as a local joint for a quick bowl it absolutely is a good place to hit up for a fast casual bowl of carbs....including their Hawaiian-leaning items (which while I didn't try seem to be similarly reviewed). Noodles were done on the more softer side on the thicker end of sizes. Chasiu was reasonably good, albeit a bit on the dry side. It's a good bowl for that rainy day, but premium this is not. ==Black Garlic Ramen [4/5]== The black garlic option definitely helps add a layer of flavor on top that boosts the quality of the broth, but suffers similarly from a thinness to the mouthfeel that's hard to break from. BF and I randomly walked in without any expectations since we were in the area. It was early evening on Tuesday so it wasn't too busy. You order at the counter and choose where you want to sit. The atmosphere felt very casual, and there were even some patrons who were working on their laptops. Since it's located in a big plaza, there's plenty of parking. I got the black garlic ramen and BF ordered the Hawaiian BBQ chicken. The ramen included all the usual fixings and they even give you the whole egg! The noodles were nice and springy and the soup was rich and flavorful without being too salty or bland, basically the standard of a good bowl of ramen. The Hawaiian BBQ chicken was good - chicken wasn't too dry and the marinade not overpowering. It came with rice, mac salad and some vegetables. Overall a very pleasant experience!
