They had great recommendations, were accommodating, and showed lovely empathy for a solo adult with two cranky 8 year olds. The girls devoured the garlic noodles. Not a single strand left! That's unusual for my girls and I was so happy they ate! I put away the dumplings & green beans. There were plenty leftovers for the next day lunch. The food was a touch salty. However, not enough to be deterred from going back. Small and yet spacious place. The 4 stars is simply because my go to dumpling place cannot be beat. The name does not live up to the hype because they were not serious about customer satisfaction from my experience. If you're going to be paying $60-$70 for two people, you would at least expect your food not to be burnt and the staff not be rude! I have been looking forward to going to this place for two years, it was a birthday dinner and I was so disappointed by my experience. I understand that it's downtown San Jose and we came in the evening, so maybe that's just how closing staff is. First off when we were seated, I asked to be moved to a more comfortable's table because the chairs were really uncomfortable for me. The staff seemed irritated and said "I guess" which was the first red flag because it's nerve-racking enough to ask for a special request and to be met with an unprofessional answer like that was disheartening. Secondly, two orders of dumplings came out burnt, which was seriously disappointing. We could barely eat them. We didn't end up finishing them. I brought this up to staff. He told me they weren't burnt and that's just how they are. I know the difference between burnt and browned and these were definitely burnt hard on the bottom and inedible. He begrudgingly told me well "I'm sorry but you'd still would have to pay for another order". I don't think that's fair at all so I said "it's fine were ok" I don't wanna give this company any more of my money anyway if this is how they treat their customers. Lastly, once we were done with our food and paid the check, the man came back to our table and asked us if there was anything he could do for us and how if we enjoyed our meal this felt like a slap in the face after everything I've already asked of him that he refused and denied and being met with a disingenuous offer just felt petty. Honestly, I've never been so uncomfortable dining anywhere. You would think that these people worked here against their will. The service was so passive aggressive and negligent. Except for the one girl with piercings that told us she just started working there, she's chill. The food was decent, I honestly think it's overhyped and I definitely prefer other dumpling places compared to here especially due to the inconvenience of parking in downtown along with probability of having to pay for parking. I felt like the giant soup xlb definitely had a lot of soup. As for the smaller ones that we ordered for the rainbow xlb, those didn't have a lot of soup. I discovered Serious Dumplings completely by chance and am so glad I did! The food was incredibly flavorful, and everything we ordered was delicious. It was also my first time trying bao, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was--soft, flavorful, and definitely something I'd order again. Awesome spot in the heart of downtown SJ for some traditional and more unique dumplings! We ordered the original SJB pan-fried soup dumplings, boiled lamb dumplings, pork & shrimp chili oil wontons, pork & shrimp XLB, garlic noodles, and cucumber salad. I've had better but these were good as well. 3.5/5 Garlic noodles with added egg: These were disappointingly sweet with a fried egg on top. Canned garlic did not help the dish at all. 1/5 Giant xiong long bao: Massive dumpling with little pork filling but a lot of hot soup that can be sipped with two tiny straws. I'm a hot soup and broth lover so this was massively amazing for me. However, the dumpling completely stuck to the steamer basket from the sides tearing the dumpling apart. In SJ downtown, so parking is slightly tricky but you can park at a parking structure nearby and it's free for the first 90 minutes. The service is good and deserves a 4 star. Although it's an online menu, we ordered via the server and food was freshly made. The tables are not big and we had to shuffle dishes around. Food quality wise was not that impressive though. We tried: - coke chicken wing: does not taste like coke chicken wing, lacking the fried element on the outside, more like a sweet soy sauce chicken wing - pan fried buns: ok, has juice inside, but some part of the bun was too hard. - regular XLB: tasted ok as there's soup inside. The wrapping can be thinner. - rainbow XLB: the most disappointed dish. They were almost all broken when we tried to pick them up. The pink one I got was curry beef and it just tasted weird. The green one which we presumed is spinach wrapping is actually a veggie XLB. - Garlic noodle with spam and veg: This is the best dish of all. There are slices of soft mushroom, good garlic flavor, we had spam and cabbage added. $13.60 for plain noodle and toppings such as protein and veg are each $2-$3 on top. -Garlic Kale: also good, chopped garlic brought up good flavors and the kale are fresh. -Ube buns: freshly made and not overly sweet, good size and quality, but 4 for $13.5 is not that affordable. Shrimp & Pork Wontons: excellent and the dish to get when you don't know what to get. I like a little extra chili oil. Pork Xiao Long Bao: nvm, THIS is the signature dish. I like the pork and shrimp version even better. Garlic noodles: Ask for egg to be added. Not too garlicky but with a defn kick. Garlic string beans: underrated. Excellent food! The garlic noodles were probably the best I've ever had. Super garlicky and adding a fried egg was perfection. I ate there in June and it's literally almost October as I'm writing this review and I still can't stop thinking about them. Everything else we ate was good too, but the garlic noodles were by far the best thing! The place itself was pretty small but cute inside and the did have some outdoor seating too it looked like. The waiter was very nice and helpful even though he was a bit overwhelmed informing us a colleague called out leaving him short staffed for a busy Sunday afternoon. Came in with no expectations, but WOW! This place gives Din Tai Fung a run for its money, with pretty similar menu items and that same delicious taste! All the dumplings and noodles were super flavorful and served fast. The only thing is that the items tend to lean on the sweeter side, so just be aware of that. I wish we got a few more "spicy" items to offset it. Service was quick and the servers were really helpful in deciding what to order. It's surrounded by bars, restaurants, and dessert spots, which makes it a perfect place to start (or end) a date night or hang out with friends. The food came out quickly, and the servers were friendly and efficient. The interior is modern with seating inside and outside. The inside though isn't the best setup for larger groups. Our group of 5 sat pretty close to another table with just a small divider between us, so it felt a bit tight. Prices are on the higher side, and for the portion sizes, it's a bit hard to justify. I was with a group for lunch and a few people showed interest in some items here. We originally planned to grab some food and go eat outside down the block a bit in the communal area since we had dogs with us. A few people from our group went inside to order but were told by the staff to sit out on the patio and someone would come help us instead. I wasn't very happy with that but sometimes when you're with a group you compromise. The patio was not looked after. We checked the tables for the cleanest one, but that was pretty much wasted time as they were all dirty. The server did brush the leaves off the table, and then later, after placing our drinks and utensils on the table, awkwardly rub one spot in front of someone with a dried rag. It was almost like he was miming cleaning the table. It was weird. The service was pretty much non-existent other than bringing the food out as the server didn't even say anything to us other than asking what we wanted. The whole thing was uncomfortable. As for the food, I ordered the beef pancake and it was fine but basic. Just meh. I also stole a pork and shrimp siu mai from someone else's plate and it was terrible; it wasn't even warm. Come to think of it, nothing was warm. I also sampled someone's cola chicken wing and it just tasted like soy sauce to me. Nothing was fresh or flavorful and I definitely wouldn't come back here. As an avid XLB enjoyer, someone who tries various dumpling places around the bay, and also a beef noodle soup enjoyer, I was pretty sad about my time at Serious Dumpling. I don't think they were serious about their dumplings, or anything for that matter. The place is actually surprisingly small, with a lot of tables for two and communal style seating. I think it's very unfriendly for big groups, as there's not too much space to eat. The vibe inside is kind of neon hip, modernized for teens. They have some outdoor seating as well. - Garlic Noodles This is their most reviewed item, and their tastiest from our selection. It's a little telling when a Chinese dumpling place's best item is their garlic noodles... Anyways, it was thick, chewy, garlicky, savory, and had a lot of good soy-garlic flavor. It was quite moist as well, and I just wish protein wasn't an extra charge. - Slow-cooked Beef Noodle Soup It was basically beef noodle soup with ramen noodles which is weird. The soup had a french onion soup kind of vibe - a bit too sweet and almost a beef bouillon cube vibe. I don't like the random pieces of cabbage, and the beef slices were very thin. This was not our typical Chinese beef noodle soup, and I would advise against ordering. - Pork XLB They were wrapped in a way where the tip was a tiny hard nub, heh. It was alright, with a smooth meat filling and adequate soup, but quite expensive. We also did not receive ginger to accompany the XLB. I initially wanted to order more, but didn't want to overindulge before testing out their popular items to compare with my standards. I think I made the right choice, because the taste was so Americanized and unsatisfying, that the high prices would have furthered my disappointment. If you want good dumplings, just go to DTF or pretty much most places a few cities north of here. Dumpling Time in SF also does a very similar menu but better, and no I would highly not recommend the giant XLB unless you really need the gram or amusement. I came for dinner on a Thursday night around 6:30pm and I had a great experience. Ambience and Service (5) Very clean and comfortable. The music was right, the vibe was chill, and the service was great. I found the server very attentive, pleasant, and friendly. The food was paced well and came out pretty quickly. There were about 3 other groups inside, tons of groups outside, and several to-go orders, and one server who did excellent. Shrimp Har Gaw (5) So yummy!! I could have eaten 10 more of these. Pork XLB (4) I wish they had more soup! but they were very very good! I do wish they came with some ginger too! Overall, Serious Dumpling was solid. I enjoyed it very much. I should've trusted the other negative reviews. I genuinely don't understand how this place has over 1,000 reviews. I ordered the beef noodle soup and honestly... what is this? Ramen noodles in a "beef noodle" dish is already wild, but the rest of it was worse. The beef looked like pre-cut packaged slices just tossed in, the vegetables were basically cabbage and chili flakes, and the broth tasted thin and artificial -- more like beef powder than something actually simmered. Other than a few items coming out less than warm, (and yes I'm not talking about the items that come out cold already) all of us really enjoyed everything! Big problem though, the service. Waiter is very much not attentive to anyone. Doesn't look customers in the eye, provides minimal service, hell, we had to ask the support staff to bring us chopsticks for food we had delivered to us 10 minutes ago, which grew cold. He never checked in on us, and we were charged 20% gratuity since we were 12 people. I don't mind auto-gratuity, but when the service is nonexistent, it really doesn't sit well. Overall it was a good experience, but the service is the deciding factor of anyone one of us 12 returning. Really unfortunate service from our waiter, other support staff seemed really nice, but he wasn't in charge of taking care of us, sadly. We were thoroughly ignored. Again, food was good, but service was so poor that this review is mainly negative. Edit: to top is off, delivered the wrong food twice, we cancelled our pork belly buns because they took too long/he ordered mala buns for us instead. You know, I wanted to give this place four stars, but this place is actually the best in the area. The xlb are great, sjb are also great. The bbq pork buns are good. The noodles are all good. Lots of options and I have found myself coming back here again and again for lunch or dinner. read more
