    Soup bowl - April 2026
    Sing M.

Out of the 300 different places to eat from within a 30 minute walk inside downtown San Jose, Samuthr is one of the unique eateries for serving up items which are not found nearby. In the picture down below is one of their soup bowls. There were five oddities here: The soup had an unusual color, and might of had vinegar in it. The carbs are the second thing, which are thin white sheets which were folded up. The third item of interest was water spinach in the bowl. The water spinach often gets mushy when cooked, but these were still crisp. Towards the upper part in the picture are the snow ears. The wood ears are more common in downtown than snow ears, as the wood ears show up in hot and sour soups. There is one other restaurant downtown that also serves snow ears, but it is only open for special occasions, and their snow ears were used in dessert instead of soup. Finally at the very top of the bowl was a cube of blood pudding. This had a consistency more similar to silky tofu than to paneer cheese.

Had an early dinner here on a Friday night! We were the only customers there, but it eventually started picking up. This Thai restaurant replaced The Nest, and you could definitely tell they put work into renovations and making the place look cute and cozy. We ordered tom yum soup, pad Thai, pad woon sen (glass noodles), and the papaya salad. My favorite was definitely the pad Thai. The noodles of the dish were a bouncier texture that I've never encountered before at other restaurants. The papaya salad was a bit salty for my personal palette, but it was still delectable and I really enjoyed the addition of dry chilis! I'd definitely come back for those 2 dishes. The tom yum soup was pretty good -- standard for what one would expect of it. I probably wouldn't order the pad woon sen next time though; it just had an initial sweet flavor that I wasn't able to put my finger on. Strange comparison but it reminded me of maple syrup in a way (just the initial taste but goes away). Our server was friendly and efficient. The dishes also came out pretty quickly too. Come give this spot a try and support your local businesses!

We came down here for a first Friday, art walk, and came across this place. It presents tastefully to the street so we walked in. It's also very nice inside in a simple way. The name of the restaurant means "ocean" in Thai my wife told me. However, they do have vegetarian dishes available. Along with some chicken dishes. Our server told us that the restaurant has only been open about it, but it was about half full on a Friday night. Our server was very well informed about the menu and was able to check and accommodate my wife's substitutions for her vegetarian, yellow curry with tofu. She had mixed vegetables substituted for the potatoes and instead of rice she had rice noodles. I had questions about several dishes on the menu as I have not seen them elsewhere. That in itself scores points with me. Since the emphasis here is on seafood, I went with the crab curry. This is not the same as the usual yellow curry, although it is yellow in color. It consists of rice noodles with crab on top in a bowl of yellow sauce and is accompanied with pickled cabbage that adds a good crunch and bean sprouts. Flavors are quite good! Those who read my reviews of Thai restaurants know that I'm always asking for the "four condiments". They are not always available, but they are available here. In this iteration, there is an orange sauce that is interesting and hear the Thai Bird chilies are joined with sliced garlic.

Cute little spot on third Street. Good for dates or small family but not great for big groups. Only street parking. Seems like a very nice family run Thai restaurant. There's only one young man working, but he is very polite and efficient. I love their pad thai and will be back to try the curry.

Samuthr Thai Restaurant is in its soft opening stage, but don't let that stop you from trying them out. I had one of my favorite dishes as takeout - Pad See Ew. They were generous with the amount of chicken and overall the ratios of everything were balanced well. The sauce hit all of the sweet and savory notes I look for. The noodles were very tender and had absorbed all of the yummy flavor. I've seen quite a few restaurants come and go from this spot, hoping this one is here to stay. Can't wait to come back and try more of the dishes they have to offer!

Samuthr Thai quietly soft opened last week in the former Nest Asian Bistro. No website, no socials, no "commmeee withhhh meeee" collabs...yet. While in the area, I found them on Yelp while looking for places with outdoor seating. Saw they had boat noodles and khao par mun nuer...sold! M E N U Northern and Southern Thai Cuisine. Def call ahead if there's something on the menu you're coming for. On the day we visited, they didn't have beef/steak so they didn't have two of the dishes we wanted to order (boat noodles and khao pad mun nuer). F O O D * Wings Zapp w/ lemongrass, galangal, kaffir leaves (6 pc-$15): https://tinyurl.com/rz8n94tu Meaty wings with an incredibly crunchy exterior, coated in a bold, flavorful, and tangy dry seasoning (not spicy). The meat was dry tho, likely from a bit too much time in the flash fry. * Chili Garlic Crispy Pork Belly w/ rice ($19.50): https://tinyurl.com/yec3a7yu Crunchy pork belly (not oily or greasy) sauteed in aromatics reminiscent of Chinese salt and pepper chicken wings. * Yen Ta Fo w/ flat rice noodles, fermented bean curd, fish ball, fish cake, wonton bits ($16.50): https://tinyurl.com/yp7zk6t7 With Chinese [teochow] roots, this hard-to-find Thai noodle soup gets its signature pink hue from fermented red bean curd. The slippery, extra wide rice noodles nicely absorb the savory, tangy broth (similar flavor profile to Korean cold noodles: naengmyeon) and it's topped with an assortment of perfectly cooked shrimp, squid, calamari, fish balls, fish cakes, pork blood, and beautiful snow fungus (great for your skin!). The fried wonton skins provided a nice texture contrast. No legit Thai meal is complete without a condiment caddy. There were two pickled peppers (jalapeno + thai bird chili), chili powder, and an orange-pink savory + spicy, sweet-sour vinegar (my fav). S E R V I C E Polite and prompt. We were the only ones sitting outside and our server was there when we needed him. A M B I A N C E Cozy, renovated Victorian home with different dining areas. Charming patio seating with fairy lights. No umbrellas or shade sails. Overall, if you're looking for different Thai offerings other than the basics, give this new family-owned business a try!

Samuthr Thai A Taste of Mae Klong in San Jose California I recently visited Samuthr Thai, and honestly... this place feels like a hidden piece of Thailand. The food So authentic. The owner is local Mae klong town in Thailand and she shared that her mom used to run a restaurant back in Thailand. You can feel that in every dish .It's not just Thai food, it's home-style cooking. Proper flavors, real spice, and that unmistakable mom recipe vibe. I ordered 3 dishes Goong Ob Woon Sen The moment it arrives, the aroma hits first , peppery, garlicky, slightly sweet from the sauce. The glass noodles are soaked with flavor, not dry at all, each bite rich and silky. The shrimp are big, juicy, and cooked perfectly, not rubbery. That sauce at the bottom? You'll want to scoop every last bit. Yum Nam Khao Tod This dish is CRAZY good. Crispy rice pieces mixed with sour fermented pork, fresh herbs, red onion, chili, lime ,every bite is a mix of crunch, sour, spicy, and fresh. The peanuts add nuttiness, and when you wrap it in lettuce... it's next level. It's messy, bold, and addictive ,exactly how it should be. Khao Kha Moo The pork leg is super tender melt-in-your-mouth soft with a rich soy-based braise. The skin is glossy and packed with flavor. The rice soaks up the sauce beautifully. Paired with pickled greens and that dark dipping sauce, it cuts the richness perfectly. This is comfort food at its finest. Everything tasted like I was eating in Thailand ,especially central-style flavors from Mae Klong which is actually where the restaurant name Samuthr comes from. I was actually really lucky... the owner herself came to serve me. She was warm, friendly, and so genuine ,not the kind of service you feel in a typical restaurant. It felt personal. She took her time to talk, explain the dishes, and share stories about her background and her mom's cooking. The atmosphere is another highlight. That bright yellow Victorian house is so eye-catching and cozy ,it weirdly gives a nostalgic Thai feeling, even though you're in California. But Hey... don't just take my word for it.Taste is personal. You have to try it yourself then you will have a new fav Thai spot like me.

New favorite Thai spot unlocked! The food here is seriously so good, authentic, flavorful, and hits all the right notes. The service was friendly, fast, and very attentive. The restaurant itself is clean with a great vibe, making it a really comfortable place to dine. I already have a list of dishes I want to come back and try. Definitely a place I'll be visiting again and again

Food is delicious and authentic. Service is great as well, server is very nice and honest. The ambiance is nice, since it's in a small house it feels like home.

We ordered the roti, crispy pork belly, sausage, Laos style papaya salad, and a khao soi to share between 3 people. All of the food was absolutely delicious but we felt like the portions were a little small for the price. I loved the curry dipping sauce on the side and the nice crunch of the cucumbers. The pork belly was slightly overcooked, a little hard but the flavors were great! Fox Tale Fermentation is a small place like a Japanese ramen shop. My high school classmate suggestion this place and I thought she was vegetarian. I asked her why this place; she wanted to try it out but she's a meat eater. I'm down to try new places so we went. When we went, it was really crowded for a Thursday dinner time. A lady saw my cane and offer her table to sit at so I felt seen. You pretty much order at the front counter; you pour your own water. Front counter was so nice to us as we try to order. We got the funk salad and kombucha. We didn't order a lot because we wanted to try the place. When we got to our table, it was near the door. Our funk salad came and it was hefty mf. It was a bowl of salad all right. So you know how I said earlier that I don't like vegetarian food? OMG I was amazed. The best salad I've eaten. The vinaigrette was so good; it was citrusy. My salad was cut into small pieces so it wasn't big that I need to cut it. The sweet potato was sauteed. The princess sauerkraut was so good. I don't like sauerkraut at all but it was divine. I never tried kombucha because I thought it was dirt tea. I was wrong. It has the fermented taste and I never knew. After trying it, it's not something I would order again. I liked how I was eating "healthy" food after I ate bad yesterday. I don't have that bad bloated feeling. It's very wheelchair friendly and restroom is unisex. The restroom is clean.
